elcome to the February 2010 edition of Road Today and thanks for your continued interest in the awardwinning magazine for the changing trucking industry. The current edition carries stories, features, updates on new products and developments related to trucking industry. Regular features like Trucking Quotient Quiz, Road Safety Tips, Entertainment, Health Column, Kids Corner, etc. also make good read. Road Today Truck Show 2010 – Canada’s Multicultural Truck Show will be rolling out in May at the Powerade Centre in Brampton. The trucking event will include plenty of activities including Inside & Outside Trade Show, Show & Shine Competition, Job Fair, Trucking Excellence Awards, Educational Seminars, Family Entertainment, Ethnic Food and lots more. If you are interested in reaching out to the changing face of the trucking industry, contact the show management and reserve your booth space at the earliest. Studies show that a driver using a cell phone is four times more likely to be in a crash than a driver focused on the road. Dialing and texting carry the highest degree of risk of all cell phone-related activities. The distracted driving law makes it illegal for drivers to talk, text, type, dial or email using hand-held cell phones

and other hand-held communications and entertainment devices. Beginning February 1, 2010, police will begin issuing tickets for using hand-held cell phones and communications and entertainment devices while driving in Ontario. We encourage our readers to focus on driving and stay away from any distractions to keep our roads safe. Under the Highway Traffic Act, the province enforces reduced load restrictions on trucks to protect Ontario’s highways during spring thaw, when road damage is most likely to occur. Inside this edition we carry a detailed notice highlighting the 2010 spring load restrictions from the Region of Peel. We request all truckers to have a look and keep the information handy for ready reference. Don’t forget to tune in to ‘Good Morning Today’ our weekly radio program broadcast every Sunday on CJMR 1320 AM radio dial at 8.30 am for latest trucking and transportations news, laws and regulations. The program can also be listened online at www.goodmorningtoday.ca Drive safe. Always remember: someone back home is waiting for you! Manan Gupta Editor

s part of its global growth strategy, Navistar celebrated the launch of its ďŹ rst commercial trucks for the Indian market at the 10th India Auto Expo in Delhi. Mahindra-Navistar Automotives Ltd. (MNAL), the commercial vehicle joint venture between Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (M&M) of India and Navistar, Inc., unveiled a family of commercial trucks and tractors in

the range of 25-, 31-, 40- and 49-ton (equivalent GVW ranges of approximately 56,000 pounds up to 109,000 pounds). The trucks have been designed, developed and tested for Indian roads and conditions and are capable of negotiating the toughest terrain. The trucks are made for India, made in India and leverage Navistar’s expertise in designing and manufacturing medium- and heavy-

duty commercial trucks. The 25- and 31-tonne trucks were unveiled previously in Delhi, while the 40- and 49-tonne trucks made their debut at the Auto Expo. “With the addition of the MN 40 and MN 49 trucks and tractors to its product portfolio, Mahindra-Navistar is now well poised to cater to a wide spectrum of requirements in the Indian Heavy Commercial Vehicle (HCV) industry,” said Anand Mahindra, vice chairman and managing director, Mahindra Group. “This product line-up makes us a formidable player.” “I’m excited to witness the launch of this all-new line-up of trucks at the India Auto Expo,” said Dee Kapur, president, Navistar Truck Group. “India is an important market for us and the Mahindra-Navistar joint venture will redefine the trucking industry in India.” In 2005, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. and Navistar entered into the MNAL joint venture to manufacture light, medium and heavy commercial vehicles for India as well as export markets. The joint venture plans to expand its product line further over the next two years to emerge as a full-range commercial vehicle player from 3.5-ton GVW to 49-ton GVW with variants of passenger transport, cargo and specialized load applications. Both Navistar and Mahindra & Mahindra have taken on shared responsibilities as part of the joint venture, lending each other’s unique expertise where appropriate. The product development for this new family of vehicles was handled by Navistar with Navistar’s team working with MNAL engineers to bring North American technology into the Indian market. The Mahindra-Navistar range of medium and heavy

commercial vehicles will be manufactured at Mahindra & Mahindra’s new Greenfield plant at Chakan, near Pune. The plant, which spans more than 700 acres, has been set up with investments by Mahindra & Mahindra of more than Rs. 4,000 crore ($857 million USD) and will produce other Mahindra & Mahindra products as well. Mahindra-Navistar has put in place an extensive sales and service network to cater to its customers. In addition to the existing network of dealers, MNAL is adding 50 new dealers across the country and will also draw on the vast pool of Mahindra & Mahindra auto and tractor channel partners to use as an extended network for serving the needs of its customers. At the heart of the 40- and 49-ton trucks is Navistar’s MaxxForce 7.2 liter CRDI engine, the most modern engine in its class in terms of product configuration as well as component technology for the HCV segment in India. This MaxxForce engine was chosen from Navistar’s global portfolio to serve the needs of markets with emerging emissions requirements. With the 4-valve per cylinder technology, the engine has been designed for better performance, higher power, better fuel efficiency and stricter adherence to Indian and Euro emission standards. Mahindra-Navistar Automotives Ltd. (MNAL) is a joint venture between Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. and Navistar, Inc. The joint venture will manufacture the entire spectrum of commercial vehicles (including trucks and buses) from 3.5-ton GVW to 49-ton GVW.

Navistar Launches Customer Parts Recovery (CPR) Program

N

avistar has launched a program that allows customers to return new, unused parts from their stock to receive cash or credit for future purchases. This program, known as Customer Parts Recovery (CPR), supplements and improves upon the GPRP program, which was only accessible to large fleet customers. The CPR program offers a direct benefit to customers who would otherwise dispose of old or unused parts in scrap yards for pennies on the dollar. By working with their U.S. or Canadian International or IC BusTM dealer, customers can return unused inventory, overstocks or obsolete parts in order to capitalize on available credit, regardless of prior purchase history. With the initial parts redemption, customers receive 25 percent of the value of the products returned to use toward future parts purchases. Customers are required to purchase a predetermined amount of parts over a specified period of time as part of their CPR agreement. Upon completion of this agreement, customers will receive the full credit amount for their return. The CPR program will provide credit through any card in Navistar’s Fleet Charge network to track parts purchases and corresponding credit amounts. Customers interested in participating in the CPR program can contact their parts sales manager at their local U.S. or Canadian International truck or IC Bus dealership.

Safetyy Award Continues in 2010 Volvo Trucks Safet V

olvo Trucks North America continues its highprofile recognition of the safest fleets in North America through the 2010 Volvo Trucks Safety Awards. Two fleets with the safest driving records and top safety programs will each receive $25,000 prizes to be used on their safety activities. This is the second year Volvo Trucks will highlight the safety efforts of individual fleets. Michelin joins Volvo Trucks in 2010 as a sponsor of the Volvo Trucks Safety Award, demonstrating the importance highway safety has for the trucking industry. “Year in and year out, safety remains a top issue for Volvo and the entire industry,” said Scott Kress, senior vice president – sales & marketing. “The Volvo Trucks Safety Award is a way to show that safety pays, even during the difficult times trucking has been through recently.” “Volvo Trucks and Michelin know how important it is to encourage all fleets to examine their safety programs to see where they can make improvements and to celebrate those companies which set a standard others can aspire to,”

12

Kress said. “We want to promote the need for safe truck operations by all fleets.” The Volvo Trucks Safety Award is open to all U.S. and Canadian fleets operating at least five Class 8 units. Fleets must have at least one Volvo tractor in operation to be eligible for the award. Entrants will be ranked by their accident frequency rates. Participating fleets will also be judged on their accident prevention activities. The deadline for entry is May 30, 2010. The winners of the award will be announced in Fall 2010. The two grand prizes will be awarded to the fleets with the best records in two divisions based on annual vehicle miles traveled: less than 20 million miles and more than 20 million miles. Complete rules and entry forms are at www.volvotruckssafetyaward. com. The winners of the inaugural safety award in 2009 were Bison Transport of Winnipeg, Manitoba, and Food City, Abingdon, Virginia.

Cross Dock expansion increases capacity for TST Overland Express TST Overland Express has opened the doors on their expanded terminal in Mississauga. Now with 114 doors and higher ceilings, it has increased TST’s ability to serve the changing needs of our customers.

B

endix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC is offering SmarTire Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) by Bendix CVS at a cost savings to aftermarket distributor customers when multiple TPMS kits are purchased. The offer is in effect during the first quarter of 2010 only and ends March 31, 2010. SmarTire monitors the pressure and temperature of each tire on a commercial vehicle to provide real-time tire status information to the driver or maintenance technician. It also warns the driver of tire-related problems before they become dangerous. “Tires, when not properly inflated, can significantly increase annual costs for fuel and tire wear and tear. The SmarTire system is easily retrofitted for almost any commercial vehicle, allowing our distributors’ customers to start improving ROI immediately. For some fleets, the SmarTire system can pay for itself in as little as eight months,” said Fred Andersky, Bendix director of marketing – Controls. SmarTire reads pressure and temperature information from inside the tire and communicates wirelessly to an on-board receiver, which forwards the information to an easy-to read, multifunction, two-inch display installed on the vehicle dash. The display alerts the driver to loss of air pressure or high tire temperature and provides pressure information to maintenance personnel. Keeping commercial vehicle tires at proper

inflation levels can deliver fuel savings, as well as reduce tire wear and help ensure the proper performance of active safety technologies like Bendix ESP(Electronic Stability Program) and Bendix Wingman ACB – Active Cruise with Braking when needed. Along with helping to improve fuel economy and reducing wear and tear on tires, Keeping tires properly inflated can also provide a safety dividend. Braking technologies, including ABS, Traction Control, ESP and Wingman ACB rely on properly maintained and inflated tires to ensure optimal system performance. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), “Properly maintained and performing tires aid drivers in preventing and mitigating crash situations.” Maintaining inflated tires keeps trucks moving, improving fuel mileage, tire life, and tread life. For more information about SmarTire Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) by Bendix CVS visit www.bendix.com.

With the additional 20 doors, the cross dock can accommodate substantially larger volumes of freight. This enables the company to implement its growth plans and maintain high levels of service to current customers. As their primary cross-dock, the facility is the hub for most of TST’s long haul linehauls between Eastern Canada and the U.S. or western Canada. “We made the decision to move forward with the investment in this expansion to ensure that we are ready for the increased business generated by the rebound in the economy,” said Rob O’Reilly, President, TST Overland Express. “We have commitments to our current customers plus goals to continue our growth path. This facility is key to our success in both areas.” TST Overland Express (tstoverland. com) is a less-than-truckload provider with service across North America including Hawaii, Alaska and the Caribbean.

ArvinMeritor Aftermarket Adds Another Innovative Solution

DEBT CONSOLIDATION AND FINANCIAL FREEDOM

Hydraulic Brake Rotors for Medium-duty Vehicles

Too Many Bills!

A

rvinMeritor’s Aftermarket business, responding to customer demand and an ongoing industry call for more rust-resistant brake components, today introduced hydraulic disc brake rotors with a new, patented coating, called ZXP3, designed to protect against oxidation and corrosion. It was announced at the Heavy Duty Aftermarket Week. The initial launch will cover three part numbers, with more models to be released throughout the year. The new coating will initially be applied to rotors with a cast-in ABS tone ring, and other applications for the coating are under research and development. The coated rotors will be distributed under the Meritor and Euclid brands through commercial vehicle aftermarket distributors and OE truck dealers in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Brake rotors are made of iron, and rust is a common problem particularly in the tone ring area. It forms quickly on bare metal and can lead to diminished ABS braking performance, corrosion, and metal fatigue. ArvinMeritor’s coating process ensures that the rotor receives a complete application.

Detroit Diesel Corporation Family of Advanced Engines with BlueTec Certified for 2010

D

etroit Diesel Corporation’s high performance, fuel efficient family of engines, including the DD13, DD15 and DD16 with the BlueTec emissions control system, has been certified by the Environmental Protection Agency as meeting 2010 emissions regulations, the most stringent standards in the world. The BlueTec system was developed by Detroit Diesel to meet the specific needs of North American trucking. It uses selective catalytic reduction (SCR) to reduce emissions to near-zero levels. In addition to meeting the 2010 emissions standards without the use of credits, Detroit Diesel’s new BlueTec system improves engine efficiency and operations. Based on extensive testing, these improvements have been proven to consistently deliver fuel economies up to 5 percent over 2007 engines, bringing value to customers while reducing production of greenhouse gases (CO2) and reducing the nation’s dependence on foreign oil. Prior to certification, the Detroit Diesel engine line with BlueTec had completed more than 28 million equivalent miles of testing, including one and a half million miles of real world freight hauling experience by customers – making it one of the most proven, tested emissions reduction technologies ever. BlueTec,Daimler’s version of SCR emissions control technology, was adapted by Detroit Diesel Corporation to meet the specific demands of the North American heavy duty marketplace

and represents the company’s latest innovation in clean diesel engine technology to be fully-developed and commercialized. Allowing more than a decade for development, the 2010 BlueTec technology is one of the most extensively tested emissions technology systems in the company’s history. Detroit Diesel and Daimler Trucks North America worked together to apply the best of Daimler’s experience with both SCR and EGR. The extra time allowed for customer validation and performance refinement to meet the requirements of rigorous freight hauling as well as severe duty vocational applications. In addition, Detroit Diesel took a leadership role in the development of the new supply infrastructure for diesel exhaust fluid and on board diagnostic sensor technologies that are distinctive to North American trucking. BlueTec is an aftertreatment system that uses diesel exhaust fluid in a catalyst to virtually eliminate nitrogen oxide emissions, thereby allowing the engine to be fully optimized for both low emissions and high fuel economy. The system incorporates the enhanced performance of Detroit Diesel’s recently introduced DD15, DD13 and DD16 big bore engines, as well as the already proven ACRS fuel system and an integrated engine-compression brake. Detroit Diesel will offer BlueTec technology in a variety of packaging configurations, including a unique 1-Box packaging design that is optimized for low back-pressure and uses an all-new, robust diesel particulate filter material.

Three Safety Associations Merge for Powerful Delivery of Workplace Health and Safety Services CSAO, E&USA, and THSAO merge to create new organization called IHSA

+

T

he new year has delivered a new organization called the Infrastructure Health and Safety Association (IHSA), forged by uniting three existing health and safety organizations. IHSA builds on the strengths of the three founding organizations as it works more cost-effectively to prevent workplace injury, illness, and fatalities through training, consulting, research, and communication. IHSA was created on January 1, 2010, from the merger of three organizations: the Construction Safety Association of Ontario (CSAO), the Electrical & Utilities Safety Association of Ontario (E&USA), and the Transportation Health and Safety Association of Ontario (THSAO). Now, IHSA serves the aggregates, construction, electrical, pipelines, ready-mix concrete, transportation, and utilities industries. “IHSA brings together three effective organizations well respected by their industry sectors. During these challenging economic times, the merger makes sense as it capitalizes on shared efficiencies to deliver programs more effectively and devote more resources to front-line service delivery,” said Michael Delisle, President and CEO of IHSA. IHSA inherits the relationships, knowledge, and expertise that earned these founding associations an enviable reputation for

working closely with their industries to lower injury and illness rates. The launch of IHSA is part of a larger realignment of Ontario’s twelve safe workplace associations. The primary objective of the realignment is to increase front-line services by reallocating existing resources. IHSA is one of four newly-created health and safety associations that came out of the realignment process. The other three are Workplace Safety North, Health and Safety Association for Government Services, and Safe Workplace Promotion Services Ontario. “Our most important task is to listen and respond to employers and workers. By working with them, we can deliver the high-quality products and services they need to maintain safe workplaces. Everyone deserves to work in a safe and healthy environment,” said Mr.Delisle. For more information, please contact Michael Burke,Vice President of Client Services, IHSA, Tel: 416-242-4771 x 261.

Green Technology Grabs Provincial and Federal Support Incentive Programs Add Up to Big Savings on Capacity PHETT Technology

A

fter unveiling the Capacity Pluggable Hybrid Electrical Terminal Truck (PHETT) shunt tractor to its Canadian customers last summer, Glasvan Great Dane is pleased to announce the addition of the equipment to the Government of Ontario's Green Commercial Vehicle Program (GCVP). The federal ecoFREIGHT program has now also made the PHETT part of its roster of eligible technology. In recognition of these exciting developments, Glasvan, as an exclusive dealer of PHETT shunt tractors in Canada, is inviting interested businesses to see the PHETT in action for themselves. Glasvan is currently showing off the ground-breaking technology across Southern Ontario. Nine southern Ontario customers have taken advantage of the opportunity to test the PHETT hybrid electric shunt truck in their operation, and are reporting savings of 55 litres of diesel per day on average when compared to their traditional diesel powered units. This equates to a great reduction in carbon monoxide, hyrdrocarbon, Nox and particulate matter entering the environment. With positive customer response and undeniable ecological impacts, Glasvan is certain that PHETT technology will be embraced and is urging potential users to investigate if PHETT is right for them. "With the PHETT being approved under various government incentive and rebate programs focused on sustainable technology, customers can now access the real benefits of the Capacity PHETT while qualifying for a provincial rebate of up to $15,000 and possible federal funding of up to $100,000 - it's a win/win situation. We truly believe that customers will realize tangible environmental and costsavings benefits that will impact both their bottom line and

20

the health of our local environment," says George Cobham Jr., Vice President, Sales and Marketing at Glasvan.

Companies that take advantage of PHETT technology can expect to experience the lowest operational costs of any shunt tractor on the market, with lower fuel consumption and fewer oil changes. PHETT technology also reduces emissions and carbon footprint impact when compared to traditional diesel powered shunt tractors. Tuition-free pre-apprenticeship training introduces students to new career field

C

entennial College is offering three tuition-free preapprenticeship training programs to help students improve their literacy and job-search skills, as well as assist them in arranging a 12-week job placement at an auto repair shop, car dealership or truck repair facility. The three programs are 36 weeks long and include Truck and Coach Technician, Automotive Service Technician and an innovative all-women's Automotive Service Technician program. Each one is designed to ease would-be apprentices into the world of technician training. "These programs demystify the apprenticeship process. Canadians and recent immigrants looking for an employer

to sponsor their apprenticeship training may find the search daunting without a good command of English and a network of contacts," says Sue Allen, Coordinator, Women in Skilled Trades at Centennial's School of Transportation. "Apprenticeship is a major employment growth area, due to the large number of skilled workers who are set to retire soon." The programs are tuition-free thanks to funding by the Ontario government, although students are required to pay a small deposit on textbooks and tools. Deposits are returned at the end of the program and students who successfully complete their studies are given a starter set of tools to keep upon completion of their work placement. Students may be eligible to collect employment insurance or Ontario Works while at college. Graduates will receive credit for Automotive Service Technician Level 1 or Truck and Coach Technician Level 1, which exempts them from some classes in the traditional apprenticeship program. To be eligible for entry, students must have their grade 12 diploma or equivalent, as well as an Ontario driver's licence. Centennial is Canada's largest transportation technology training centre, with more than 3,000 automotive apprentices attending classes annually. Applications will be accepted until Feb. 22 for classes that will begin Mar. 8. For details, call Sue Allen at 416-289-5000, ext. 7204, or Mike McGraw at ext. 7256, or e-mail sallen@centennialcollege.ca or mmcgraw@centennialcollege.ca.

iversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation has announced that Cummins, Inc. has chose Eaton to participate in its SuperTruck program to develop a next generation automated transmission that improves fuel efficiency in heavy-duty trucks. Cummins recently received $39 million in funding from the Department of Energy (DOE) to develop its SuperTruck project in conjunction with Peterbilt Motors Company. The goal of the SuperTruck program initiated by the DOE is to improve long-haul Class 8 vehicle freight efficiency. The program focuses on advanced and highly efficient engine systems and vehicle technologies that meet prevailing emissions and Class 8 tractor-trailer vehicle safety and regulatory requirements. “We are grateful for the opportunity to push forward with developing and testing our next automated transmission and proving that we have the ability to help Class 8 trucks achieve very high levels of fuel efficiency,” said Joe Palchak, president – Eaton’s Vehicle Group. The SuperTruck project will develop and demonstrate a highly efficient and clean diesel engine, an advanced waste heat recovery system, a fuel cell auxiliary power unit to reduce engine idling on an aerodynamic Peterbilt tractor and trailer combination. The SuperTruck will result in a fuel-efficient, low emissions diesel engine with an Eaton automated transmission that achieves a significant fuel economy improvement over current diesel technology.

TCA Announces 2010 Best Fleets to Drive For

T

he Truckload Carriers Association (TCA), in conjunction with CarriersEdge, has announced the winners of the second annual Best Fleets to Drive For survey and contest. Of the seventeen companies recognized for having best workplaces for truck drivers, seven hail from Canada. The overall list includes: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Bison Transport, Winnipeg, MB Boyd Bros. Transportation, Clayton, AL Brian Kurtz Trucking, Breslau, ON CalArk Trucking, Mabelvale, AR Central Hauling, Mabelvale, AR Coastline Transport, Fowler, CA Con-Way Truckload, Joplin, MO Dart Transit Company, Eagan, MN Don Hummer Trucking, Oxford, IA Kennesaw Transportation, Rydal, GA Laidlaw Carriers Van, Guelph, ON MacKinnon Transport, Guelph, ON Melton Truck Lines, Tulsa, OK MSM Transportation, Bolton, ON Schneider National, Green Bay, WI Shulist Trucking, Maple, ON Yanke Group of Companies, Saskatoon, SK

Best Fleets to Drive For is an annual survey and contest identifying the North American for-hire trucking companies that provide the best workplace experiences for their drivers. To qualify, carriers operating 10 trucks or more had to be nominated by at least one of their drivers (either a company driver or an owner operator). CarriersEdge conducted the survey and compiled the research data, evaluating each nominee on the range and depth of offered programs, the overall effectiveness of those programs across key metrics, and the responses of surveyed drivers. “This is the second time the survey has been conducted, and the data that has emerged from it has been very useful to the industry in terms of identifying trends and where things are headed,” said Chris Burruss, TCA’s president. Mark Murrell, president of CarriersEdge, agreed, adding, “For example, the survey reveals that fleet sizes went down overall last year, but a number of the Best Fleets actually grew in size. Many of the Best Fleets also took advantage of low prices and interest rates to invest in new equipment.” In March, TCA will announce the names of the highest scoring fleets from each of two categories: Best Fleet for Owner Operators and Best Fleet for Company Drivers. These overall winners will be recognized at the TCA Annual Convention, February 28 - March 3, 2010, at the Wynn Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Back to Basics By Bruce Outridge

O

ver the Christmas holidays my wife and I took a road trip to Florida for a vacation. We enjoy the road trips very much as it gives us time to talk and reflect over past experiences and future endeavors. One thing my wife was always asking me was why I kept looking at the map if I already knew where we were going. After all on these road trips many are a trip down memory lane for me with the many years of driving I did throughout the United States in my trucking career. However, over the years road numbers change and highways detour so keeping an eye on the map is important. The reason I bring this up is, while in Florida, a story broke over the news about a couple from the western U.S. who set out on a road trip over 500 miles from a relative’s home using nothing but a GPS unit. So this couple set out on their road trip that should have taken them one day of driving. According to the news reports, they became disoriented and were lost in a remote area for three days. Now, being an older couple I can understand them getting confused with directions. Apparently, this couple set out on the trip without even looking at a map and blindly following their Global Positioning System. The couple were found safe in their car, but disoriented. They had plenty of food, but said they were afraid and not hungry. They turned the car off and on to save gas and continued to have heat on a sparing basis. Now, I’m not making slight of the couples’ situation, it could have turned out quite differently. I’m very glad everything turned out alright. The reason I tell you this story is that in

this day and age everyone is dependent on technology. Cell phones with Map Quest, Global Positioning Systems, email, etc. When I was driving in the U.S. in the 80’s and 90’s, dispatch would give us our load information with a telephone number to call the shipper for directions, load time, etc. Today, I am sure this information is delivered via satellite systems or email. Keep going this way and the freight will materialize at the receiver’s location like a Star Trek episode in the future. Although I am for technology, I find it makes people lazy because they don’t learn traditional methods for tracking and communication. Technology also stops us from actually talking to each other, so we lose the relationship stature with other people. Time management and trip planning has always been very important to me and I think any professional driver worth their weight will excel in this area. You need to learn the basics so that you have a total overall picture of driving and trip planning as a whole. I am amazed at the stories of individuals who don’t plan their trip or follow directions blindly without checking the directions with other material, you need to “LEARN TO READ A MAP! “ If you learn the basics like how the numbers of the Interstate system work, how mile and kilometre markers work with highway exits, you will find you are better at planning your trips and you will be on time more often. Now, let’s talk about the phone. We never had cell phones when I ran the States before. I’ve talked about customer service before as it is the centre of everything I talk about. relationships. By calling dispatch you create a bond that gives you the opportunity to build a relationship where each person can understand how each other works. This can be very beneficial to both parties and the company as a whole. By calling the customer you also build relationships and you can also adjust your trip planning to benefit your own schedule. Let’s say you call the shipper to confirm your pickup time, the shipper relays that a line has shutdown and the time will be delayed by four hours. That information could afford a driver more sleep time or the company

may change a load according to the amount of freight on the board. You will find many shippers appreciate that as they don’t need a room full of upset drivers waiting for loads. The message “Get back to basics”. Use technology as an asset, not the structure. Take ownership of your position – you are a professional. Even if technology is presented to you learn how the basics work. Professionals always back up technology with intelligence.

The following is an interview with Dr. Paul Larson, Director of the Transport Institute at the University of Manitoba. Q: Please briefly describe the field of involvement of the University of Manitoba Transport Institute. A: The Transport Institute’s mission is to facilitate prosperity, sustainability and mobility, linking business, government, the not-for-profit sector, academia, and the community. To work toward this mission, we conduct rigorous and relevant research in transportation and logistics, train transportation researchers, policy makers and practitioners, and disseminate research results and policy implications at conferences, roundtables and workshops. Our research projects are focused on a variety of critical, contemporary issues in transportation, logistics, and supply chain management (SCM). Q: and

What can you the role you play

tell us about in leading the

yourself Institute?

A: I am Head of the Supply Chain Management Department at the Asper School of Business, as well as Director of the Transport Institute. While the Institute remains focused on transportation research, my work includes expanding our outlook into logistics and SCM. My role also involves disseminating our findings, at events such as the annual Manitoba Outlook on Transportation (MOOT), building relationships with complementary organizations, organizing events, e.g. the Future of Trucking Symposium, and contributing directly on some of our research projects. I am supported in this role by an outstanding senior administrative and research staff team— Kathy Chmelnytzki, Doug Duncan, Al Phillips and Jairo Viafara. Q: The Transport Institute has some notable achievements in its history, can you elaborate? A: Starting as a Centre for Transportation Studies in 1966, the Transport Institute has more than four decades of experience in transportation research at the University of Manitoba. In 2005, the Institute became a unit of the Department of SCM in the Asper School of Business. Since 1998, the Institute has hired and trained 41 Human Resources and Social Development Canada (HRSDC) interns. These interns are our core junior research staff, working on assignments such as the annual Manitoba Transportation Report. Most of our former Institute interns have gone on to graduate education programs, or transportation-related careers in the private or public sector. Q: 32

your

as

we

are

coming out (according to most sources) of this recession? A: We plan to be ready! Ready to take on research projects in our key focus areas, such as: inland ports as facilitating entities in the supply chain, northern transportation, urban transportation, sustainable transportation, supply chain risk management, and studies focused on specific modes of transportation, e.g. trucking or rail. In addition, we are ready to organize and host our usual annual events, such as Supply Chain Connections, Fields on Wheels, and the Manitoba Outlook on Transportation. Finally, we are always ready to take on compelling, new research projects or events, like the Future of Trucking Symposium. Q: Please tell us about the “Future of Trucking” symposium you are conducting in February. A: We are very excited about this event! The North American trucking industry is facing many challenges today, from rising fuel prices and concerns about greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, to looming labour shortages as the recession ends and tighter security requirements at national borders. The good news is there are some potential solutions, such as developments in vehicle technology, intelligent transportation systems (ITS), roadway infrastructure, and the tools of public policy. With the Symposium, our objective is to bring together leading trucking industry stakeholders—including truckers, private fleet managers, industry associations, policy makers, engine manufacturers, service providers, etc.—for some serious discussion about the future of trucking. More details are available at our web-site: http://www.futureoftrucking.ca or contact Dr. Larson at larson@cc.umanitoba.ca Q: Can you elaborate on the Institute’s relationship with TransCore and the freight matching data analysis report project. A: A recent collaboration is our relationship with TransCore Link Logistics. This brings together the Transport Institute capabilities in analysis and interpretation of large data sets and TransCore’s unique logistics data sets describing available equipment (trucks looking for loads) and available loads in search of trucks. In line with our mission, this type of freight matching facilitates prosperity, sustainability and mobility. Prosperity and sustainability are enhanced when trucks are full, reducing fuel consumption and emissions per ton-mile of freight moved. Full trucks also mean fewer trucks on the road, reducing congestion and increasing mobility.

eginning February 1, 2010, police will begin issuing tickets for using hand-held cell phones and communications and entertainment devices while driving in Ontario. Drivers caught using a hand-held device will be issued a $155 ticket. Since the ban on hand-held devices became Ontario law on October 26, 2009, the focus has been on educating drivers about Ontario's new road rules for hand-held wireless communication and entertainment devices. This education period gave drivers a chance to adjust to the new law. The distracted driving law makes it illegal for drivers to talk, text, type, dial or email using hand-held cell phones and other hand-held communications and entertainment devices. Hands-free use of these devices is permitted. The new law also prohibits the viewing of display screens unrelated to driving such as laptop computers or DVD players. Police, paramedics and firefighters, as well as some commercial drivers and public service workers may continue to use certain hand-held devices when performing their duties. All drivers may use hand-held devices to call 9-1-1. Studies show that a driver using a cell phone is four times more likely to be in a crash than a driver focused on the road. Dialing and texting carry the highest degree of risk of all cell phonerelated activities. If a driver challenges the ticket in court, a judge has the discretion to adjust the fine anywhere in the range of $60 to $500.

- Have a "driving" playlist on your MP3 player and start it playing before you set the car in motion. That way, you won't be fumbling to find a good song while driving. - If something falls, leave it. Never reach for an object while driving, unless it is impeding with your ability to control the car; in which case, pull over and deal with it. - Deal with predictable distractions before hitting the road. Check the map, adjust the seat, the climate control and the radio, and familiarize yourself with the dashboard controls, before taking the car out of park. - If you are driving with pets, make sure they are safely secured and in the back seat. - Put aside enough time to complete your grooming before you set out, so you won't have to apply make-up, comb your hair or shave while driving. - Listen to your GPS device; don't look at it. - Make all necessary wardrobe changes before you enter the car. - If a situation can't wait - the kids are acting up in the back seat, or you need to refer to a map or take an emergency call - pull over somewhere safe to deal with it.

Lakshmi Mittal, the steel baron, made the NRI dream a reality when he became the third richest man in the world. Wonder if Mittal would have made it so big had he decided to package the recipe of his favourite mango pickle internationally? Maybe, maybe not. But many enterprising immigrants-tobe, in their quest to make mega bucks abroad, have started learning achaar, chutney recipes as well as the Yoga asanas, even before their visas get the approval stamp. A short-term crash course is all it takes to have the firangis eating out of their hands. Says Raj Suri, a media professional who has applied for immigration to

‘Hindi movies are overrated’

Past allegations of underworld links, controversies down South, her failed relationships and a career in Bhojpuri films. BT gets actor Nagma in the hot seat... Actor Nagma’s not been around for a while. She has been travelling a lot and doing regional movies. BT caught up with the actor...

On keeping a low profile of late:

My sister Radhika is in America. I was holidaying there with my family. Apart from that, I was very much here, working. We’ve started an NGO that’s focussing on women and children’s issues. Also, I’ve been busy with Bhojpuri films. My first movie that released there was a blockbuster. What a lot of people don’t know is that Bhojpuri films have a huge market in UP and Bihar. One film is directed by Saroj Khan. In the other film I’m working

on, Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini will make guest appearances. There’s also a Punjabi film that I’m doing. Till now, I have worked in nine different languages and I want to work in the remaining languages as well.

Rumours that a top south star finished her career there: Nothing of that sort happened. These were different kinds of rumours.

What went wrong down south?

I had the number one position for 12 years in the South Indian film industry. There comes a point when you want to move on and do something different. I wanted to do Hindi films which I am doing. Just that at times I feel Hindi movies are overrated. Maybe because they give national and international fame. But regional movies emphasise tradition and culture. My Bhojpuri movies always have a social message.

It’s just that at that time I took a break, went into art of living, started teaching it. When you are on top and quit, speculations arise. It was my wish. I wanted to do something else.

Allegations about underworld links that came up sometime ago: Allegations are just allegations. It’s all a part of life. One has to take them with a pinch of salt. If I’ve done no wrong, I have nothing to worry about. The law will takes its own course, if it has to.

OUT OF ACTION? Actor Nagma

End of her political career? When the controversy

erupted, I was campaigning for the Congress. I consciously decided to step away from what I was doing. There were parliamentary sessions going on. But nothing about me came up or became an issue. I believe in doing my work. About a career in politics, if it has to, it will happen. I had never planned anything in life. As long as I live I would like to make a difference.

Personal relationships not working out:

I am truly blessed. As a person, I am completely satisfied and fulfiled. Each experience of mine has taught me to live life in a more enriched manner. I thank God for simply bringing each and every person into my life and teaching me the value of relationships.

So also, with mint chutneys, kundru achaars, chicken tikka masala et al, the Great Curry Western has been initiated, in a big way. According to Sulakshana Arya, who runs cookery classes in Malad, “It’s interesting that in the last one year I have enrolled around 80 per cent students for the traditional cuisine segment. And out of these almost half of them are either in the process of relocating out of India or are planning to.” The logic is simple. When in the global village, sell your speciality. Agrees entrepreneur Sheryl Gonsalvez, who runs a garment business of Lucknow’s chikan work in Australia, “My craft is essentially Indian. And before leaving for Australia, I attended a sixmonth designing course in chikankari. Now I design according to what my clientele wants and then get the final garments finished in my workshop in Lucknow and sent back. I really lucked out by specialising in the very ethnic craft.” Strategising at the outset is another thing, hopeful NRIs do. Take for instance Vishal Mishra, a

ALK Launches PC*MILER|Web Internet-based Routing, Mileage and Mapping Service ALK Technologies, Inc. has launched PC*MILER|Web, an Internet-based version of ALK's industry standard PC*MILER software for owner operators, fleets, brokers, or anyone else who needs instant, accurate mileage for rate calculation or truck-specific driving directions and maps. The new service is available on the web through any Internet-connected computer, in the office, at home, or on the road. PC*MILER|Web replaces ALK's web service, eMILER.com, with upgrades that include street-level and hazardous materials routing and routes for an unlimited number of stops. The new service also offers additional reports and mapping functionality. Since it is hosted on the Internet through a tier-one data center, regular updates are available to all users as they are made at no additional cost. Pricing for PC*MILER|Web is based on a monthly subscription rather than eMILER's per-route charges. Three subscription packages: Lite, Standard, and Premium, offer increasing levels of access to PC*MILER's proprietary North American truck-specific database. ALK is currently offering a free trial of PC*MILER|Web which allows 48 hours of access. At only $19.95 per month, PC*MILER|Web Lite provides instant point-to-point mileage and routing. Shippers, carriers, brokers, and third-party logistics companies can use the service to rate shipments. The same parties can use Lite to confirm mileage on shipments rated by others.

CTA Partners with Government to Advance Research on Renewable Diesel CTA has partnered with the Government of Canada and several energy and transportation organizations to advance research on the storage and use of heating and transportation fuel containing biodiesel. The research program was designed to enhance understanding of the technical issues related to renewable diesel use. The study, funded by the Government of Canada’s National Renewable Diesel Demonstration Initiative and industry partners, formulated guidelines that can help assure biodiesel product quality and reliability, including: • Up to 10 per cent biodiesel content in heating oil should not cause furnace performance issues • Limiting the level of saturated monoglycerides in biodiesel helps maintain adequate fuel flow. This is particularly important for low-temperature storage and for operation of both furnaces and motor vehicles. • The use of antioxidants when storing biodiesel over the long term can be used to assure product stability The research studied appropriate applications for renewable diesel, developed guidelines for regional and/or seasonal blends and provided information for standard setting bodies to set specifications that will ensure fuel products are fit for service. CTA continues to be involved in the study of renewable diesel and its potential impact on the trucking industry. For a copy of this report, please visit www.cppi.ca

Milking cow A blonde applied for work on a farm. The foreman decided to give him a try and told him to milk a cow, equipping him with a stool and a bucket. Plantar Warts By Dr Christopher H. Singh

F

or this month’s article, I have decided to talk about plantar warts. This condition is very common among professional truck drivers due to their lifestyle on the road. Essentially, plantar warts are a non cancerous skin growth on the soles of your feet which are caused by the human papillomavirus. Although plantar warts are not usually a serious health condition they can be quite painful and irritating. The symptoms of plantar warts can vary from person to person. However, for most people the first noticeable symptom is pain or tenderness on the bottom of their foot when walking or running. On closer inspection, plantar warts appear as small flat growths with a rough surface and well-defined borders. Another way to identify them is to look for bumps that interrupt the normal lines and ridges in the skin on the soles of your feet. Plantar warts are contagious however, in order to catch them you must come into direct contact with the virus. This virus thrives in warm, moist conditions such as showers, locker rooms and public swimming pools. For truck drivers, walking barefoot in public showers is by far the most common way to contract the virus. Due to this, I always recommend to my patients to wear slippers into the showers. Also, it is important for drivers to practice good hygiene by keeping

their feet clean and dry. Changing your socks daily is a good idea. It is particularly important to take extra caution if you have a cut or a sore on your foot and these can serve as entry points for the virus. Unfortunately, plantar warts can be

very persistent as it is possible to spread the virus to other parts of the same foot. In order to avoid this, it is important to get new warts treated as quickly as possible and to avoid picking at the warts. If left untreated, warts can grow and spread into groups of warts called mosaic warts. These clusters of warts can become very painful.

The good news is that home treatments of plantar warts are usually successful. The most commonly used remedy is salicylic acid, which is an over-the-counter medication. This medication works by slowly peeling off the infected skin over a period of time. Salicylic acid treatment can take up to several weeks to completely remove warts. Cryotherapy products such as Compound W Freeze Off are also effective in removing warts. If these home treatments are not successful, you will have to consult with your doctor to discuss other possible treatment options such as freezing, laser therapy or minor surgery. Doctors generally start with the least invasive and painful treatment and work their way up from there. Due to the fact that every individual’s immune system responds differently to warts, it may be necessary to try a few treatments before being successful. As you can see, plantar warts are more of a nuisance than a serious health condition. By following these simple prevention strategies you will be able to greatly reduce your chances of catching them. Keep them in mind next time you pull over at a truck stop for a shower. Until next month, drive safely.
