Entry to our show is free and pre-registered visitors are eligible to win lots of exciting prizes. I invite all our readers to visit the show and maximize on the opportunities to network and be well informed. For more details, visit www.roadtodaytruckshow.com Motor vehicle collisions remain a leading cause of injury-related deaths in Ontario. The social cost of motor vehicle collisions in Ontario is estimated at about $18 billion annually. During a collision, properly fastened seatbelts help to distribute the forces of rapid deceleration over larger and stronger parts of the person’s body, such as the chest, hips and shoulders. In Ontario, every occupant travelling in a motor vehicle is required to be buckled up properly. Drivers are responsible for ensuring passengers under the age of 16 are properly secured in a seatbelt, child car seat or booster
seat, as required by their height, weight and age. Only one person can use a seatbelt at one time. There must be a seatbelt or child car seat for each person in the vehicle. It is illegal for two people to be buckled up using the same seatbelt. This year marks a milestone as it is the thirty-fifth anniversary of Ontario’s seatbelt law. Today, approximately 92.8 per cent of Ontarians buckle up compared to 17.2 per cent who wore seatbelts before the mandatory law took effect in 1976. Since then the number of people killed and injured in motor vehicle collisions has steadily dropped. Seatbelts and child restraints have protected and saved countless lives. The Spring Seatbelt Campaign in Ontario runs from April 13 through April 23, 2011 and is an excellent opportunity to focus on increasing seatbelt use in your community. I strongly encourage all our readers to use the seatbelt as it is the single most effective way to reduce vehicle related injuries and fatalities. During their two year term, the Road Knights will present important road sharing tips to motorists, raise awareness of the vital role trucking plays in the economy, discuss careers in the trucking industry with young people and represent the industry at community events, business club meetings, driver education classes, schools and in the media. This is the 9th team that OTA has assembled since the program launched in 1995. This year’s team is generously sponsored by the OTA Allied Trades Division.
Ravinder Athwal, professional truck driver with Trimac Transportation has been named to the prestigious 2011-2012 Ontario Trucking Association (OTA) Road Knights Team. Athwal’s impeccable driving record, commitment to safety and desire to share his trucking expertise earned him a spot on the Team, which serves as ambassadors of the Ontario trucking industry. “I am proud to have been selected as an OTA Road Knight,” said Athwal. I am eager to share my safety knowledge of the industry, as well as the numerous career opportunities the trucking industry offers. Athwal has been a professional driver for nine years and driven over one hundred thousand collision free kilometers. Their mission is to raise awareness about how all road users can safely share the road with transport trucks and about the trucking industry. They also share information on the many careers the trucking industry has to offer at schools and career fairs. “The members of the OTA Road Knights team are exemplary professionals in their field who want to share their passion for safety and their knowledge of the trucking industry,” said Road Knights manager, Deanna Pagnan. “Being named to this team is a great honour.”

Western Star Truck Sales introduces the All-New Class 8 Western Star 4700
W
estern Star Truck Sales has introduced its all-new Class 8 vocational truck - the Western Star 4700. The 4700, combined with the Western Star 4900 and 6900 truck models, provides customers with a full range of premium truck options to suit any need. The new truck was on display for the first time at the 2011 Work Truck Show. Available in a set-forward and set-back configuration, the 4700 features a 110-inch BBC - the shortest BBC in its class - and is the ideal solution to meet the needs of the dump, mixer, crane, roll-off, sewer vac and plow applications. “The Western Star 4700 broadens our product line-up to meet the growing needs of value-minded vocational customers who still demand the attributes found in a traditional Western Star truck,” said Mike Jackson, general manager, Western Star. “Hand-built with unmatched attention to detail, the 4700 features the same durability, ruggedness and reliability our customers expect from Western Star. The Western Star 4700 is ready to take on the most demanding of applications, and is available with the broadest range of powertrain options in a single truck model, including the Detroit Diesel DD13 engine and the Cummins ISC and ISL engines. The DD13 features a six-cylinder, in-line configuration, 350 to 450 hp and 1,250 to 1,650 lb/ft of torque. Combined with Daimler’s proven BlueTec Selective Catalytic Reduction emissions technology and Amplified Common Rail System (ACRS), the DD13 can save vocational customers up to five percent in fuel economy. For vocational customers who do not require 13-liter power, the Cummins ISC and ISL are ideal for applications that include the light plow and mixer market. Also utilizing proven SCR technology, the ISC features 260 to 350 hp and 1,000 lb/ft of torque, and the ISL features 345 to 380 hp, and 1,100 to 1,300 lb/ft of torque. A broad range of transmissions is also available for the 4700, including the latest Eaton Ultrashift PLUS transmission, and Allison 3000 and 4000series transmissions. The Western Star 4700 is equipped with a galvannealed steel cab specially designed to withstand the rigors of vocational applications. The cab is precision welded, then dipped and protected with a proprietary 17-stage e-coat process for long-lasting corrosion resistance and superior paint finish. Its newly designed, sloped hood offers outstanding site lines for optimal visibility. The Western Star 4700 will be available to order in the third quarter of 2011, with targeted delivery in early 2012. www.roadtoday.com

serve 270 trucking companies using some 15,000 individual trucks and tractor- trailers that pay the one-way toll into Canada at the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge. The pass also works for tour buses crossing the Rainbow Bridge, which does not handle trucks, or at Queenston. The NFBC’s third bridge, the Whirlpool Bridge, is NEXUS only. “The new commercial ExpressPass is the fastest way through the toll booths and will help commercial vehicles operate more efficiently by reducing the time they spend crossing these bridges,” said Lew Holloway, NFBC general manager. “When commercial trucks spend less time in line and paying tolls, it saves them time, fuel and money, while reducing overall congestion for everyone else as well.” The ExpressPass for commercial vehicles utilizes two fully automated, unmanned toll booths. The driver pulls up to a booth and flashes the ExpressPass card – essenOWNER OPERATORS tially a debit card – at the designated sensor. from our Montreal, Ottawa The system then deducts the appropriate and Mississauga amount of money from a pre-deposited Terminals for CDN/US runs account maintained by enrolled truckers, Nous embauchons dans la règioin de Montrèal counts the pre-registered number of axles pour des routes vers on the truck, and up- or down- charges for les Etats Unîs more or fewer axles as needed, to ensure a speedy, fair and accurate transaction. There is a web-based account management system that allows companies to manage their commercial account online. “This is essentially a VIP line for truckers. We created the commercial ExpressPass system in-house and it is the first of its kind to be used on the northern border,” said Victor Montalbo, NFBC manager of administration and finance. Benefits of having an ExpressPass commercial account: •Toll payments are prepaid using electronic cards that make crossing quick and easy while removing the need for cash and receipts. •The system has been designed to utilize the latest technology and offer customers ease in account administration. •Two toll lanes have been exclusively dedicated to ExpressPass customers at the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge. •Customers never have to worry about negative account balance with online automatic credit card replenishment. •The ExpressPass is not battery driven and is better for the environment.

TruckTax Launches Trucker-Books: Easy-to-Use Paperless Bookkeeping System for Truckers
INSURANCE
A new solution pioneered by Markham based TruckTax promises to significantly reduce the time and cost investment required by truckers to manage their bookkeeping, accounting and business tax information and filings. The easy-to-use spreadsheet bookkeeping software program, customized specifically to meet the income and expense recording categories needed by truckers to bring more meaning to the business information and the bottom-line, gives truckers more control over business information and source documents. With the TruckTax system, truckers eliminate the need to package and send their income and expense invoices and receipts to an accountant to prepare and provide them with quarterly profit-loss reports and ready-to-file returns as is applicable. Instead, truckers use this spreadsheet system to enter their income and expenses at a time that is convenient to their operating schedule and simply send the spreadsheet to their accountant on a monthly basis by email for processing and reports preparation. “Truckers typically collect their business income and expense information and receipts, then package and send them to an accountant or a company like ours to handle the accounting and document management,” says Ron Johnson, president of TruckTax, Inc. TruckTax paperless bookkeeping system changes that. Truckers now simply email their accountant a copy of an active spreadsheet direct from their home or laptop computer and are able to view or print meaningful professional reports each month to obtain a snapshot of the business and the current bottom-line, all without the need of any prior bookkeeping or double-entry accounting knowledge or experience. A few of the active reports available each month include: profit/ loss report; cash flow report; and operating analysis of income per mile or kilometer, cost per mile or kilometer and profit per mile or kilometer. To further help truckers manage the operating profitability of the business, the system has a built-in Load Profit Analysis system to allow truckers to know how much profit they will make on each load prior to backing up to the dock to pick up the load. This easy-to-use yet comprehensive bookkeeping management system for truckers goes beyond bookkeeping management to provide truckers with an audit-ready document management system that will in the event of an audit allow the process to be hassle-free.

Mack Introduces Enhancements to Vocational Truck Lineup W
ith a focus on continuous improvement, Mack Trucks has introduced a series of enhancements to its MACK Granite conventional straight trucks and the heavy-haul Titan by Mack model. The announcements were made at the 2011 CONEXPO-CON/AGG show in Las Vegas. Building on the success of the top-selling heavy-duty Class 8 Genesis:OTR_OTR 3/17/11 PM Page 1 conventional straight truck in the 10:48 United States, Mack debuted a medium-heavy duty version of its Granite model. The Granite Medium-Heavy Duty (MHD) is designed to meet the needs of customers, like some municipalities, who don’t put their trucks through all the rigors Granite models can handle – customers for whom a lighter spec gets the job done. The Granite MHD is available in both axle-forward and axleback configurations, is powered by a Cummins ISL9 EPA 2010certified engine and is offered with an Eaton manual or Allison automatic transmission. Mack also announced that both its Granite Axle Forward and Granite Axle Back models can now be ordered with a 36-inch flattop sleeper equipped with a 30 by 80-inch mattress, curtain, bunk restraint, under bunk storage and cup holder – as well as rear and side window options. Further enhancements to the Mack Granite series include a new headliner console, optional one-piece windshield, and updated Champion Level trim package with button-tuck vinyl and

ultra leather seats that delivers the comfort and styling drivers desire at no extra charge over its predecessor. The new Champion Level trim package and one-piece windshield are also available in the Titan by Mack model. A cab-mounted exhaust option available in all Granite models and a clear back-of-cab assist Mack body builder partners. Customers also now have a new Allison automatic transmission option – the 3000 series – for the Granite model.

Carrier Transicold’s New FuelCheck Ultrasonic Monitoring Option Improves Refrigerated Hauling
C
arrier Transicold’s new FuelCheck ultrasonic monitoring option for Vector and X2 Series trailer refrigeration units is designed to help reduce operating costs and protect the integrity of the cold chain by alerting drivers when low-fuel situations could lead to a system shutdown. It also enables fuel- consumption tracking, helping to improve fuel management across entire fleets. Service calls due to units running out of fuel and losing their prime can be among the most costly maintenance expenses faced by a fleet, according to Kevin Williams, Carrier Transicold trailer product manager. “Those avoidable situations can also inconvenience a fleet’s customers and risk the integrity of cargo,” he said. FuelCheck software tracks the fuel level via the DataLink™ data recorder of the refrigeration unit’s Advance microprocessor control. Such information is important for fleet efficiency and can also help spot problems, such as fuel theft, especially when monitoring is done remotely via telematics. In use, the Advance microprocessor continuously monitors the level of diesel in the refrigeration unit’s fuel tank, as sensed by the FuelCheck ultrasonic transducer mounted at the top of the tank. Unlike capacitance sensors, ultrasound measurement provides accuracy regardless of the fuel type, be it low- sulfur diesel, a biodiesel blend or fuel with special conditioners or additives. If the fuel level drops below 15 percent for more than 30 seconds, the refrigeration unit’s LED light bar glows a cautionary yellow to warn the driver, and the control unit’s message center displays “LOW FUEL WARNING.” If the fuel level drops below 10 percent for more than 60 seconds, the refrigeration system automatically shuts down to prevent loss of prime in the fuel lines. For more information about the FuelCheck option, turn to the experts within the Carrier Transicold dealer network or visit www.trucktrailer.carrier.com. www.roadtoday.com

Phillips Industries Introduces Battery Status Indicator
O
ne quick look ensures truck fleets that their batteries have all the power they need with the new Batty Status Indicator from Phillips Industries. The Phillips Battery Status Indicator is a simple device which can be added to monitor the state of power for any battery, particularly lift gate batteries. It alerts operators during pretrip inspections that battery power may be lower than required. If battery voltage is more than 12.4 volts or 75% power, the LED light flashes green but if the voltage falls below 12.39 volts, the light will blink red indicating that batteries should be charged before the trailer leaves on the next trip. Phillips new Battery Status Indicator part number 60-9000, is available through Phillips authorized distributors.

You Want What ?
ecently I had the opportunity of meeting with quite a few drivers, from various companies. It was enlightening to say the least. What do they really want? For that matter, what do any of us want? Money, sure we all have bills and we all have to feed and clothe ourselves. When there is a Kevin Snobel is a frequent problem someone that will listen. No I’m speaker at Industry Seminars, talking about the Manager that hears, I’m and has been involved in the Transportation Industry, talking about the Manager that actually and taught about the Industry listens. since 1976. He is presently employed at Caravan Logistics As an industry we spend a lot of Inc where he is Director of money, training drivers. We spend a lot Safety and Compliance. He can be reached at kevinsnobel@ of money for security crossing the border. caravanlogistics.ca We spend a lot of money on equipment. We spend a lot of money on information technology. We spend a tremendous amount of money on insurance costs. We spend a lot of money on fuel everyday. How can we reduce all of them? It has been said by many, many people, if we control costs, we will be around for the long term. If we are cutting costs then it may already be too late. Funnily enough many companies in this industry, just take for granted, loads from so called reputable companies and then are stuck never getting paid. In the Truck/Transportation industry where a profit margin is only 2%-5% for good companies, how many loads do
you have to move, if someone doesn’t pay the $8,500.00 they owe you? This industry has always had a dark side to it, of sharing information especially when it comes to clients. A friend of mine, was telling me, about a company (a so-called 3PL), who refused to pay the $8,500.00 they owed them for loads moved last June, July, August, and September. I advised him: Send a letter, to the actual Shipper and Consignee, directly. Sure this is drastic but it is also very legal. I also advised them to preface the letter to the actual Shipper and Consignee by stating “THIS IS NOT A LETTER SOLICTING YOUR FREIGHT BUSINESS”. That way the so-called 3PL cannot accuse the carrier of back soliciting their freight moves. I will continue this in next month’s article.

Time is Money – How Much Have You Spent?
In the business world time is money or so it is said. If you are wasting time you are wasting productivity therefore you are wasting money. That holds true for many of us in business or not. It’s all around us as well, just watch people as they rush around all day trying to catch up with this or trying to complete that. If you really want to tick them off ask them to complete a task for you by a certain time, and watch the fireworks go. Now some people don’t feel that time management can work for them. The excuses I get are that, “too many outside factors affect my time frame”, or “I am paid to work here for eight hours anyway”. Those situations may be true but that doesn’t mean you can’t be productive within that time frame. The group that probably needs time management the most but refuses to use it is the truck drivers of world. As I speak with owner operators across the country through seminars and workshops I hear the same thing, “Dispatch doesn’t give us the time we need” or “we can’t make any money!” That may be true but are you doing the things that are important for your business to be successful by using time wisely? As an entrepreneur working on and in my business I have to make sure I am working productively to not only grow my business, but completing the projects I receive from my clients. I also have to watch the outside factors don’t
eat away my time, so I have to remain very scheduled to be productive. So how do you do that without losing sight of your lifestyle? If you’re an entrepreneur then the best time management technique that I enjoy is through using colour to manage your time. To learn how to do that read my past article on how to “Colour Manage Your Time” which is posted on my blog. However we are talking about the professional driver here and there are certain situations that you will come across that will affect your time. Those outside forces are necessarily under anyone’s control as they may be weather or traffic related. You also have hours of service which tell you how much work you can put in during the day and so on. But as an owner operator you need to keep your eye on the profit and loss of your business and also future stability of the business through productivity. Many owner operators feel they don’t have to work hard or can schedule time off whenever they want, but that isn’t true as those wheels need to keep moving. So how do you plan for all of the unknown factors that affect your schedule? The first part is to know your breakeven point for the business on a monthly basis. This will be based on the budget you created when starting your operation as an owner operator. How much work do you need? The next step is to make sure you know how much profit you want to make above your
costs, is it 5%, 10%, or 20%. Now break your mileage in to the days you have available to work. So let’s say you need to complete 500 miles per day to create the income you want for your business. You are going to lose a certain amount of time unloading, loading, clearing customs, etc so that needs to be factored in to your calculations. If you are waiting to be unloaded for an hour that should be replacing the income for that driving time being lost. So as you factor in all of those situations you will be evaluating your operation to make sure each day you are making the money you have set out to make. Now let’s assume you are working in Canada and have 13 hours of driving time available to put in the miles. Five hundred miles will take approximately 10 hours of driving time. Factor in your breaks and inspections and you should require around 12 hours a day without any major delays. So set your daily limit at 12 hours and you have a safety net of an hour. Just because you can run 13 hours a day doesn’t mean you should. If you are trip planning effectively and managing your time, while watching your business you will find you are more productive with less time. You can also increase your profits by keeping your finger on the pulse of your business. Manage your time effectively on and off duty and you will succeed at time management. Remember time is money!

Freightliner Trucks Introduces Sales Tool Application for the iPad
App provides convenient resource for dealers, interactive purchase experience for customers
F
reightliner Trucks has announced the introduction of its Freightliner Sales Tool App for iPad. Developed and provided to Freightliner Trucks dealers, the Freightliner App provides a complete resource for technical and operational information that encompasses the entire Freightliner Trucks product line including, on-highway, vocational, medium duty, and severe duty truck applications. “We developed this app so our Freightliner sales professionals would have a way to rapidly respond to their trucking customers‚ pertinent needs and questions in real time,” said Lori Heino-Royer, special project manager for Daimler Trucks North America. “The portability of iPad allows the presentation and discussion of relevant Freightliner product benefits while standing with the customer, right next to the vehicles.” The Freightliner App hosts a catalog of product details, including truck model specs, videos, photos, and more allowing dealers and customers to have access to detailed product information for vehicles not available in the showroom for viewing. Also, with iPad, dealers will have instant access to the Daimler Truck Financial point-of-sale website, F&IPro. Freightliner sales personnel can upload and submit credit applications, present terms and payments through the loan or lease calculator, and
generate contracts and other customer documents through one simple portal. The iPad was selected for its ease-use, large, high-resolution display and innovative Multi-Touch interface. Plus, with the ability to connect to the Internet via WiFi or 3G, iPad is the perfect mobile device for traveling sales professionals.

e-Manifest Update A
fter several years of planning and significant consultations, on October 31, 2010, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) implemented the first stage of the eManifest initiative — one of the Agency’s largest undertakings to strengthen our nation’s security and at the same time modernize and improve commercial border processes. When fully implemented, eManifest will require all commercial import trade partners (carriers, freight forwarders and importers) in all modes of transportation (air, marine, highway and rail) to electronically transmit advance trade data to the CBSA for risk assessment purposes. By risk assessing pre-arrival information, health, safety and security threats related to commercial shipments can be identified before the goods arrive in Canada. The CBSA can then focus its resources on those people, goods and conveyances posing the greatest risk to the security and prosperity of Canada. eManifest will result in an improved commercial process that rewards compliance with predictable and expedited processing at the border. eManifest – Advance Trade Data Requirements To reduce the administrative burden on businesses, eManifest advance trade data requirements will build on existing Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) data sets and be harmonized to the greatest extent possible with the World Customs Organization and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The CBSA will publish the required data element details and guidelines in Electronic Commerce Client Requirements Documents (ECCRDs) a minimum of six months before the respective implementation timelines begin. The ECCRD for the highway mode is available on the CBSA Web site at www.cbsa.gc.ca (click on the eManifest button and then “ACI/eManifest Highway Electronic Commerce Client Requirements Document (ECCRD)” in the “In Focus” box). eManifest – Before the Border The CBSA must receive highway carriers’ electronic cargo and conveyance data a minimum of one hour in advance of goods arriving at the border using either: ▶ an existing EDI method: • Value Added Network (VAN): a public EDI network used to exchange data through a single communication interface; • Third Party Service Provider: a CBSA-approved third party that transmits data for their clients using a variety of communication modes; • Customs Internet Gateway (CIG): a gateway used by the trade community to transmit cargo, release and accounting data over the Internet to the CBSA; • Direct Connect to the CBSA: an alternative that provides trade partners with a direct connection to the CBSA. OR ▶ the eManifest Portal, an Internet-based option developed by the CBSA to facilitate compliance and ease the transition from paper reporting to pre-arrival electronic data transmission for small- to medium-sized enterprises. The eManifest Portal will be ROAD TODAY APRIL 2011
available to highway carriers in early summer 2011. eManifest – Implementation Timeline Recognizing that it will take time to adjust to the new reporting requirements, eManifest will be implemented over a number of years, by client type, using an 18-month implementation timeline. There will be an initial 12-month period to allow clients to incorporate eManifest requirements into their business processes followed by a six-month period of informed compliance. After this period, clients may be subject to administrative monetary penalties (AMPs) for non-compliance. eManifest – Key Implementation Dates ▶ Highway carriers Beginning October 31, 2010, current EDI options for data transmission included functionality for the transmission of highway carriers’ cargo and conveyance data. The CBSA will offer an eManifest Portal option beginning in early summer 2011. Although registered and tested EDI clients could begin transmitting eManifest information on October 31, 2010, the 18-month implementation timeline for all highway carriers to transmit cargo and conveyance data will begin in early summer 2011. ▶ Rail carriers In late 2011 / early 2012, the 18-month implementation timeline will begin for rail carriers to transmit cargo and conveyance data. ▶ Freight forwarders In 2012, the 18-month implementation timeline will begin for freight forwarders in all modes of transportation to transmit secondary cargo / house bill data. ▶ Importers In 2012, the 18-month implementation timeline will begin for importers in the marine mode to begin transmission of advance trade data (formerly called Importer Admissibility Data or IAD). Note: The implementation dates for importer data in other modes and crew/passenger data in all modes will be confirmed at a later date. eManifest – Early Adopters The CBSA encourages clients to adopt eManifest requirements early within each implementation timeline. Being an ‘early adopter’ will allow clients time to streamline business practices and operational efficiency before requirements become mandatory. With the implementation of eManifest, all carriers will be required to use carrier codes assigned by the CBSA. The use of the itinerant highway carrier code “77YY” will be eliminated on March 31, 2011. For further information on the process for obtaining a carrier code, visit the CBSA Web site at www.cbsa.gc.ca (click on “Commercial sector” then “Commercial carriers”). eManifest – Client Support The CBSA will provide ongoing support to clients by telephone and e-mail — before, during and following the implementation of eManifest. For general questions about eManifest policy or operations, call 1-800-461-9999. Meet CBSA at the Road Today Truck Show, Booth 155.

Canada, “My wife is a software expert but I’m into the media line which is not so well-paying abroad. So I’ve signed up for Yoga classes and for the next three months I’ll perfect my asanas, so that I can make some money when we finally move.

THE GLASS CEILING: Mandira Bedi dazzles in the contemporary diamond jewellery created by MAIA — the soon to be launched fine jewellery store in Khar
On keeping a low profile of late:
My sister Radhika is in America. I was holidaying there with my family. Apart from that, I was very much here, working. We’ve started an NGO that’s focussing on women and children’s issues. Also, I’ve been busy with Bhojpuri films. My first movie that released there was a blockbuster. What a lot of people don’t know is that Bhojpuri films have a huge market in UP and Bihar. One film is directed by Saroj Khan. In the other film I’m working
on, Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini will make guest appearances. There’s also a Punjabi film that I’m doing. Till now, I have worked in nine different languages and I want to work in the remaining languages as well.
Rumours that a top south star finished her career there: Nothing of that sort happened. These were different kinds of rumours.
What went wrong down south?
I had the number one position for 12 years in the South Indian film industry. There comes a point when you want to move on and do something different. I wanted to do Hindi films which I am doing. Just that at times I feel Hindi movies are overrated. Maybe because they give national and international fame. But regional movies emphasise tradition and culture. My Bhojpuri movies always have a social message.
It’s just that at that time I took a break, went into art of living, started teaching it. When you are on top and quit, speculations arise. It was my wish. I wanted to do something else.
Allegations about underworld links that came up sometime ago: Allegations are just allegations. It’s all a part of life. One has to take them with a pinch of salt. If I’ve done no wrong, I have nothing to worry about. The law will takes its own course, if it has to.
OUT OF ACTION? Actor Nagma
End of her political career? When the controversy
erupted, I was campaigning for the Congress. I consciously decided to step away from what I was doing. There were parliamentary sessions going on. But nothing about me came up or became an issue. I believe in doing my work. About a career in politics, if it has to, it will happen. I had never planned anything in life. As long as I live I would like to make a difference.
Personal relationships not working out:
I am truly blessed. As a person, I am completely satisfied and fulfiled. Each experience of mine has taught me to live life in a more enriched manner. I thank God for simply bringing each and every person into my life and teaching me the value of relationships.

So also, with mint chutneys, kundru achaars, chicken tikka masala et al, the Great Curry Western has been initiated, in a big way. According to Sulakshana Arya, who runs cookery classes in Malad, “It’s interesting that in the last one year I have enrolled around 80 per cent students for the traditional cuisine segment. And out of these almost half of them are either in the process of relocating out of India or are planning to. The logic is simple. When in the global village, sell your speciality. Agrees entrepreneur Sheryl Gonsalvez, who runs a garment business of Lucknow’s chikan work in Australia, “My craft is essentially Indian. And before leaving for Australia, I attended a sixmonth designing course in chikankari. Now I design according to what my clientele wants and then get the final garments finished in my workshop in Lucknow and sent back. I really lucked out by specialising in the very ethnic craft. Strategising at the outset is another thing, hopeful NRIs do. Take for instance Vishal Mishra, a

H
uman Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) and Citizenship and Immigration Canada are updating the Temporary Foreign Worker Program that fleets have been using to tackle shortages of long-haul truck drivers. The changes to the related Immigration and Refugee Protection
Regulations, which came into force on April 1, will address: • Genuineness of job offers – This will involve assessing an employer’s ability to meet the terms of a job offer; determining if the business is legitimate and actively engaged in the province in which a Labour Market Opinion (LMO) is submitted; and verifying that the job offer is consistent with the employer’s reasonable employment needs. Reviews will also need to determine that employers and third-party agents acting on their behalf have a history of complying with the federal, provincial and territorial laws which regulate employment and recruitment. • Compliance review – This makes sure that wages and working conditions have, over the two years preceding an LMO application, been “substantially the same” as the original job offers to temporary foreign workers. Getting rich The teacher said, “Take a pencil and paper and write an essay with the title ‘If I Were a Millionaire.’ Everyone but Joe, who leaned back with arms folded, began to write feverishly. “What’s the matter,” the teacher asked. “Why don’t you begin?” “I’m waiting for my secretary,” Joe replied. Flight of fancy “I’ve never flown before, said the nervous old lady to the pilot. “You will bring me down safely, won’t you? “All I can say ma’am,” said the pilot, “is that I’ve never left anyone up there yet!” Fun time Wife: “Let’s go out and have some fun tonight”. Husband: “Okay, but if you get home before I do, leave the hall light on”. Well practiced Nurse: “Good morning, Mr Smith, you seem to be coughing much more easily this morning”. Mr Smith: “That’s because I’ve been practicing all night”. Happy anniversary A sad-faced man walked into a flower shop early one morning. From the look of him the clerk thought he was to order for a funeral piece, but soon realised his assumption was wrong as the man asked for a basket of flowers sent to his wife for their anniversary. “And what day will that be?” the clerk asked. Glumly he replied, “Yesterday.”

Achilles Tendonitis- Heel Pain in Truck Drivers Heel pain is a common occurrence in professional truck drivers. Although there are several causes of heel pain, for the purpose of this article, I will be concentrating on one specific condition called Achilles tendonitis. Let’s get started. In order to understand this injury, you must first understand the anatomy of the area. The Achilles tendon is a fibrous band of tissue that connects the calf muscles to the heel bone. This tendon is very important for locomotion and is used in many activities such as walking, running and jumping. Achilles tendonitis is simply inflammation of the Achilles tendon. In most cases, this injury occurs when the tendon is strained from excessive force or overuse. For truck drivers there are a few common causes of Achilles tendonitis which include using improper technique when getting in and out of their trucks and jumping off the back of their trailers. In addition, operating the gas pedal for many consecutive hours may cause trauma and irritation to the tendon over time. There are several risk factors that may increase the chances of developing this type of tendonitis. First of all, poor flexibility of the calf muscles and flat arches will decrease the ability of the Achilles tendon to absorb shock. To add to this, not warming up before physical activity and wearing inappropriate footwear will also
increase the likelihood of straining the tendon. The most common symptom of Achilles tendonitis is pain at the back of the heel bone that develops gradually and worsens over time. Some people experience a dull ache in the back of the leg above the heel after participating in physical activity. On visual inspection, you may notice swelling or a lump on the Achilles tendon. It is important to address this injury at its onset in order to avoid developing a more serious condition. Most of the time, a health care
professional will be able to assess and diagnose this condition after taking a detailed history of the injury and performing a thorough physical examination. Advanced diagnostic testing such as ultrasounds and MRIs may be necessary to identify and confirm the diagnosis. The treatment of Achilles tendonitis is oftentimes very simple. The first line of treatment consists of rest and ice to reduce the inflammation. In addition, your doctor may recommend anti-inflammatory medications to further reduce inflammation and

decrease pain. Gentle stretches may also promote healing of the tendon. However, it is important to perform the stretches in a slow and controlled manner in order to avoid re-injury. Orthotic devices such as heel lifts may also be utilized to relieve the tension on the tendon during the healing process. If the injury does not respond to these conservative modes of treatments, your doctor may explore other possibilities such as corticosteroid injections or even surgery. The goal of surgery is to repair damaged tissue and restore function of the foot. As I always say, prevention is the best treatment. It is important for drivers to use proper footwear which provide adequate cushioning for the heel and support for the arch. Also, it is good practice to replace footwear when they show signs of excessive wear. Next, performing a regular stretching routine which includes a few calf muscles stretches will improve flexibility and reduce the stress on the tendon. Lastly, warming up before performing any physical activity will loosen up the muscles and tendons of the legs. I recommend that drivers walk around their truck five to ten times as a good warm up. By following these simple tips, you will greatly reduce your chances of developing Achilles tendonitis. Until next time, drive safely.
