elcome to the December 2011 edition of Road Today and thanks for your continued interest in the awardwinning magazine for the changing face of trucking industry. Inside you will find the latest developments and updates related to the trucking industry plus all regular features like Trucking Quotient Quiz, Road Safety Tips, Entertainment, Health Column, Kids Corner, and much more. Ending up stranded on a busy highway can be nerve wracking and that’s why it’s so important to know what to do and how to stay safe in an emergency situation. We would like to congratulate CAA South Central Ontario (CAA SCO), the Ministry of Transportation, the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police, the Ontario Provincial Police and Toronto Police Traffic Services for launching a “Stranded Driver” Campaign to educate motorists on how to handle a breakdown or collision. The “Stranded Driver” safety checklist is available at CAA Car Care Centres, select CAA Travel Stores and select ServiceOntario locations until the end of the year. Drivers can also download the tips at www.caasco.com/StrandedDriver and place the handy guide in their glove box. The planning for the 4th Annual Road Today Truck Show is now in advance stage. The two-day trucking extravaganza will be organized at the Powerade Centre in Brampton on May 26 and 27, 2012 and will include plenty of activities including Inside & Outside Trade Show, Show & Shine Competition, Job Fair, Excellence Awards, Family Entertainment, Ethnic Food Court and lots more. We thank all major players of the
trucking industry for their ongoing support and patronage towards the success of Canada’s multicultural truck show. The 2011 Holiday R.I.D.E. (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) program directed towards the detection and elimination of individuals from our roads who choose to drink and drive, has been launched extensively by the law enforcement agencies and will run throughout the holiday season. Impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of criminal death in Canada. Please think before you drink and drive, it is not worth risking life. Road safety is a shared responsibility and it starts with you. Operation Red Nose - a unique program dedicated against drinking and driving is now underway in many communities across Canada. The program is a volunteer driving service provided during the Holiday Season to all drivers who have been drinking or who do not feel fit to drive their own vehicle. It is an original and free way of getting a safe ride in one’s own vehicle without driving it. For more information on opportunities to participate in Operation Red Nose in your community, visit www.operationrednose.com Road Today Media Group takes this opportunity to extend Holiday Greetings to all readers, patrons and industry friends. Please conduct yourself safely on the road and see you in the New Year.

MANITOBA GrEEEn TRUCKING PROGRAM RENEWED FOR 2011 Transrep M Executives Launch Fleet Purchase Program A
new Fleet Purchase Program has been designed by industry used truck dealer SelecTrucks of Toronto and Transrep Inc. Transrep supplies marketing and sales support to help meet financial and market share goals for products and services in the transport industry. Nevio Turchet, Used Truck Manager of SelecTrucks has helped create the Transrep Fleet Purchase Program to ensure there continues to be good quality used equipment for Select’s clients. “There is no doubt this industry is built and maintained on relationships. We have decided to utilize Transrep’s services because of the long term commitment and positive reputation of the Transrep executive”. Transrep’s Fleet Purchase Program will allow fleets to move equipment to SelecTrucks in a seamless transition anywhere in North America. Ray Haight, partner in Transrep is looking forward to the relationship with SelecTrucks. “We are excited to be working alongside of SelecTrucks of Toronto. We have been familiar with the way they do business through the ‘Power to Drive’ program and have always been impressed with their integrity and dedication to customer service”. Recent reports indicate that Class 3-8 used truck market tumbled by 10% according to a report obtained from ACT Research Company, ACT officials say a lack of inventory will continue to plague the industry. Turchet believes the new Transrep Fleet Purchase Program will help companies in a number of ways; turning trucks into cash, getting into better financial deals with newer equipment, utilizing advanced technology through newer equipment, lowering maintenance costs. There is a large number of fleets underutilizing their equipment or could do better deals right now financing newer equipment or companies are looking to turn equipment into cash to reinvest or get rid of some debt. www.roadtoday.com
anitoba Infrastructure and Transportation (MIT), together with the University of Manitoba Transport Institute and the Manitoba Trucking Association (MTA) have announced the continuation of the GrEEEn (Economically and Environmentally Efficient) Trucking incentive program. Reintroduced for the fall of 2011, the program offers incentives to companies/owneroperators to install various technological improvements that work to reduce vehicle emissions and fuel consumption. The key objectives of the GrEEEn Trucking program are to further demonstrate Provincial commitment to promoting technology and innovation as a way to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the freight transportation sector and help the private sector, through financial incentives, implement GHG emission reduction technologies. How to handle a highway breakdown or collision E
very day, drivers call CAA South Central Ontario (CAA SCO) for service because they have either been involved in a collision or their vehicle has broken down on the side of the road. Ending up stranded on a busy highway can be nerve wracking and that’s why it’s so important to know what to do and how to stay safe in an emergency situation. On November 16th, CAA SCO, the Ministry of Transportation, the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police, the Ontario Provincial Police and Toronto Police Traffic Services launched a “Stranded Driver” Campaign to educate motorists on how to handle a breakdown or collision. What to do if your vehicle breaks down: • Stay calm and pull off the road safely. • Note your vehicle’s location. This will come in handy when calling for assistance. • If you must get out of your vehicle, watch carefully for oncoming traffic especially at night or in bad weather. • Never stand behind or
ROAD TODAY DECEMBER 2011
directly in front of your vehicle, as you are at risk being struck by drivers who might not see you. • If you CANNOT pull off the road, turn on your emergency flashers. • Call 911 for help. “Don’t assume other drivers can see you if you become stuck on the side of the road,” said Henry Westenbrink, Manager ERS Operations, CAA SCO. “That’s why it is important for drivers to prepare for the unexpected.” “Drivers should make sure their vehicles are road-ready because breakdowns and collisions can occur when least expected,” said OPP Sergeant Dave Woodford, OPP Highway Traffic Safety Division. “If you do become stranded on a highway, remember, don’t panic.” The “Stranded Driver” safety checklist will be available at CAA Car Care Centres, select CAA Travel Stores and select ServiceOntario locations until the end of the year. Drivers can also download the tips at www. caasco.com/StrandedDriver and place the handy guide in their glove box.
CarriersEdge Expands Library with New Training Modules New titles include industry’s first French online CSA course
C
arriersEdge, the provider of online driver improvement programs has announced the addition of several new modules to its library of online driver training courses. Among the new titles are Introduction au CSA pour les Chauffeurs - the French version of its popular Introduction to CSA for Drivers course - and a completely redesigned suite of Hours of Service (HOS) courses. The new HOS courses including both Canadian and U.S. regulations - expand on previous versions with more real-world scenarios and a broader look at factors affecting HOS management, including trip planning, inspections, fatigue management, and general driver wellness. The enhanced content reflects best practices captured during the Best Fleets to Drive For program, an annual evaluation of the best employers in the North American trucking industry, produced by CarriersEdge in partnership with Truckload Carriers Association. “While conducting the Best Fleets to Drive For surveys over the past couple of years, we’ve seen a real shift in the way fleets are approaching Hours of Service planning and management” said Mark Murrell, President of CarriersEdge. “Our new HOS courses incorporate 18
those findings, going beyond the specifics of the regulations to provide a more holistic education in logbook management.” The full suite of HOS & Logbooks courses includes: • HOS & Logbooks (Canada) • HOS & Logbooks (Canada/ US) • Regulatory Refresher Logging Your Duty Period (Canada) • Regulatory Refresher Logging Your Duty Period (Canada/US) • Regulatory Refresher - Sleeper Berth & Other Exceptions (Canada) • Regulatory Refresher - Sleeper Berth & Other Exceptions (Canada/US) With Introduction au CSA pour les Chauffeurs, the CarriersEdge library of French courses now includes nearly 16 hours of safety and regulatory content. The course, explaining FMCSA’s Compliance, Safety, Accountability program, had been a regular request from Quebec-based carriers, but the complexity of the material presented multiple challenges for developers. CarriersEdge subscription customers automatically receive all modules as part of their subscriptions. Modules can also be purchased individually through CarriersEdge partners across the country. www.roadtoday.com

Border crossings: did you know? (NC)—Border services officers are legally entitled to examine your luggage as part of their responsibility to protect Canada’s safety, economy and environment. As a traveller, you are responsible for opening, unpacking and repacking your luggage. By making your goods easily accessible for inspection, and having your receipts handy along with the total of all purchases made, you’ll be helping the CBSA to help you. It’s a good idea to keep all your receipts for accommodations and purchases, and for any repairs done to, or parts bought for, your vehicle. The border services officer may ask
to see them as evidence of the length of your stay and of the value of the goods or repairs. In addition, border services officers may arrest an individual for an offence under the Criminal Code such as impaired driving, outstanding arrest warrants, stolen property, abductions or kidnappings and for infractions under the Customs Act and the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. If you are arrested, you may be
compelled to attend court in Canada. Source: Canada Border Services Agency “I Declare, www. cbsa.gc.ca.

Drive prepared, alert and safe all winter
(NC)—As the seasons change and we move into winter driving conditions, Canadian drivers need to be extra conscientious on the road as they travel to places such as work or holiday gatherings. While drivers try to be aware of their surroundings during difficult driving conditions, a recent survey on road safety and driving near large trucks found that some Canadians are uneasy around these vehicles, in part due to a lack of understanding of how large trucks operate differently from a regular passenger vehicle. The top concern — identified by close to 30 per cent of respondents — was that trucks would merge into their lane. At the same time, roughly the same percentage could not identify where the blind spots on trucks are. As part of UPS’s commitment to road safety, UPS ‘Circle of Honour’ drivers - an elite group of active drivers who have steered clear of accidents for 25 years or more - offer these safe winter driving tips: • Don’t get blindsided — Large trucks have large blind spots in front, to the side, and behind them. Avoid passing trucks on the right side as this is the side with the largest blind spot. When in doubt, drivers should remember that if they can’t see the truck driver’s face in the trucks’ side-view mirrors, they
are likely in a blind spot. • Give them their space — Trucks are much heavier than an average car, and as a result need much more time and distance to stop, so drivers should avoid cutting in front of trucks or braking suddenly in front of them. • Don’t get caught on a roll — Large trucks can roll back when starting on an incline, therefore it is important to stay at least 15 feet behind them when on an upward slope. • Don’t get sucked in — Larger vehicles create more air turbulence at highway speeds; keep a steady grip on the steering wheel when approaching them. • Wipe away the spray — Drivers should turn on their windshield wipers when approaching trucks in wet road conditions to increase visibility. Collectively, ‘Circle of Honour’ drivers have logged more than eight billion kilometres and more than 147,244 years of safe driving through their careers. That’s enough kilometres to circle the earth 188,000 times. More information on safe driving tips can be found online at www.ups.com.

Unclear safety benefits - not cost - is the issue, CTA chief says
LIBEREZ UNE VOIE. C'EST LA LOI.
Police, fire and ambulance personnel are often required to do their work on the shoulders of busy highways. For safety reasons, the law requires all drivers to slow down and proceed with caution when passing an emergency vehicle parked on the side of the highway with its lights activated. If the highway has more than one lane, the law also requires all drivers to move over leaving at least one lane between their vehicle and the parked emergency vehicle, if it can be done safely. Obeying this law will save lives! Violating it can result in a $2,000 fine and three demerit points.

T
he Canadian Trucking Alliance, which represents over 4,500 trucking companies from across the country, says it is far from clear that a private member’s bill from NDP transport critic, Olivia Chow -- which if passed would make it mandatory for all trucks to be equipped with side guards -- would on their own save lives or lead to less serious injury of bicyclists who become involved in collisions with heavy trucks. And, says the alliance’s president, David Bradley, CTA’s opposition to the bill has nothing to do with cost or competitive issues, as Ms. Chow suggested in recent media reports. Bradley points to a March 2010 study conducted by the National Research Council for Transport Canada which concluded “it is not clear if side guards will reduce deaths and serious injury or if the guards will simply alter the mode of death and serious injury” and “cyclist advocates who have stated that the biggest problem is a lack of awareness of how to safely share the road with other vehicles and bike lanes which would separate cyclists from other traffic.” “This is a complex issue,” says Bradley. “While we fully understand the emotions that would be cause for some people to support mandatory side guards, we feel the solution lies elsewhere – in increasing awareness and education and planning for bike lanes.” He also said there needs to be a distinction made between trucks operating in inner-city areas, which tend to be smaller, non-articulated trucks – trucks without trailers which are called straight trucks and include everything from delivery vehicles to garbage trucks – and tractor-trailer units which operate on highways. Bradley also notes that an increasing number of tractor-trailer units are being equipped with a different type of device along the sides of trailers (called side fairings) which reduce aerodynamic drag, thereby improving fuel economy and reducing GHG emissions. The National Research Council study found that the kind of side guards contemplated in the private member’s bill “would be detrimental to the drag coefficient of highway vehicles travelling at higher speeds.” According to figures from Transport Canada, there are about 221,000 registered commercial highway tractortrailer units in Canada. Given that most trucking companies have at least a 2:1 tractor-trailer ratio that would mean that at least 442,000 trailers would need to have side guards installed on them. www.roadtoday.com

CN acquires more energy-efficient intermodal equipment to improve service, reduce emissions CN has announced the purchase of 200 more efficient EcoTherm containers to increase customer efficiency and help reduce energy consumption in its fast-growing temperature-sensitive intermodal markets. Products such as food, beverages, paints and pharmaceuticals require protection against low temperatures. With this container acquisition, CN’s EcoTherm fleet stands at almost 500 units, the largest in North America. CN also announced the purchase of 25 EcoRide chassis. They weigh 15 per cent less than conventional chassis and are equipped with aerodynamic features such as side skirts and low-rolling resistance tires. Containers delivered on EcoRide chassis consume eight to 11 per cent less fuel than containers delivered on traditional chassis. Jean-Jacques Ruest, CN executive vice-president and chief marketing officer, said: “EcoTherm and EcoRide are innovative technological advances that help CN reduce the energy intensity of its customers’ supply chains and position us to grow our business.” The super-insulated 40-foot EcoTherm container is an economical, green alternative to the 53-foot heated container. Food and beverage customers can load the same volume of product in the 40-foot insulated container without the need for the blocking and bracing required in a 53-foot container.
EcoTherm has more insulation than a conventional diesel engine-powered “heater” container, enabling it to hold its interior temperature more effectively. This allows EcoTherm to retain the proper temperature for sensitive goods throughout a rail trip as long as 10 days with no need for an engine to burn fuel en route.

The Intimidation Factor
Bruce Outridge has been in the transportation industry for twenty five years. He now operates Outridge Consulting Services helping create professional drivers for the transportation industry. For more details please visit www.outridge.ca.
H
e is fifteen years old, almost six feet tall, and one hundred and ninety pounds. He looks double that size under a street lamp on a cold evening. He walks briskly in the cold trying to get home before curfew. Approaching from the opposite direction is a small woman, standing all of 5 foot, two inches tall. She too is walking at a fast pace trying to get out of the cold night air, however she is even more in tune with her surroundings. The two walk head on in the dead of night on a lonely street, the blocks in the distance move closer together as the two people walk towards each other, until they are all but a block away from each other. The fifteen year old boy suddenly turns and crosses the street. The woman notices the move and is relieved, she was wondering what would come of them once they passed in the night. The fifteen year old boy in this story was me. I have come across that scenario most of my life and being this size in high school I realize that in the dark shadows of the night I probably look twice the size to a person that is smaller than me that can’t see any details. People didn’t realize that I was a nice guy, or that I would have helped them on a dime, that I was late and just in a hurry to get home in the dark, no one understands all that. I recognized it and was open to crossing the street
if I saw a woman coming up the same side of the street to relieve her stress because I understand she didn't know me. The reason I tell you this story is that as professional drivers and owner operators we go through the same thing everyday. We intimidate many of the motorists on the road. Now I don’t believe we all do this and
I don’t believe we intend to do that when it does happen. It is just how we are perceived on the road, remember when something is smaller than you it will make you look twice the size. As cars get smaller for fuel economy, and our trucks get bigger and longer
for freight capacity you can see how the intimidation factor increases. Add the problems of congested roadways, tight timelines, and everyday busyness of peoples lives and you have a recipe for disaster. Have you ever had a truck tailgating you when you are in the car, what do you see in the rearview mirror? You see a giant grill, you see a truck following too close, you see a possible accident situation. It happens everyday and is frightening to those who find themselves in that predicament. So what can you do to help avoid this situation? The first thing is to recognize when you may seem intimidating to others. Many times you are in total control, have the right of way, but you will still come off as the aggressor just because of your size. In this day of cell phones and videos your actions may seem intimidating to someone not even involved in the situation. A professional driver operating safely will learn to back off and give people some space. Aim to change the views of the general public one car at a time by recognizing the intimidation factor. As we move into the Christmas and winter season people will be on our roadways in conditions that seem normal to us. They are just trying to see family for Christmas, don’t be the dark spot in their holiday season that becomes the topic of interest at the dinner table. I wish you all a wonderful holiday season and the best to you and your family for the new year.

2nd Convoy for a Cure-Ontario West raises more than $47,500
T
he 2nd Convoy for a Cure Ontario West took place on Saturday, 15th October. The convoy began at the 1st staging location of the 5th Wheel Truck Stop in Dorchester, Ontario and rolled down the Hwy 401 to the final destination of TA Truck Stop Exit 230 in Woodstock, Ontario. A little nasty weather could not dampen the spirits of all those attending for a great cause. With many new and returning sponsors and the dedication of drivers the convoy was once again a huge success raising $47,501 for breast cancer. Two returning drivers, Donna Hoogendoorn raised over $3,000 and Stephanie Schroeder with almost $2,000 lead the way for the convoy with the highest pledges. Bruce Petrie (Molson Coors) and Monique Menard (Highland Transport) won the best “Pinked Out” prizes chosen by the representatives from the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. At the TA stop, the drivers and supporters enjoyed live music performed by some of Southern Ontario’s amazing artists, a BBQ, bake sale and silent auction. Cheryl Lewis-Thurab from the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation was on hand to greet and thank all the drivers and with a special note sent from their founder Nancy Paul who 25 years ago started the foundation. Nancy thanked all the participants and the transportation industry for joining their fight against breast cancer! Joanne Millen-Mackenzie, a 20-year trucking veteran and organizer of the convoy thanked all returning and new sponsors taking part in the 2011 convoy. “Convoy for a Cure” is a team of dedicated women who have created a network of convoys that celebrate the women of the trucking industry and bring awareness, sponsorship, and support for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. What is ORN?
9pm to 3:00am (last call) www.ornbrampton.org
Features of the service The Operation Red Nose service is not intended just for people who have been drinking alcohol. Any person who does not feel fit to drive, due to fatigue or other reasons, can call. A person may call once, or more than once, during the course of an evening, either to go from one place to another, or simply to go home. The service is free. Donations are accepted and are turned in full to local St. John Ambulance youth programs. The only requirement: the client must show proof of valid insurance and own the vehicle at the time of their call. In other words: no vehicle, no service. Operation Red Nose is not a taxi service, but rather a volunteer driver service for motorists and their vehicles. The client is driven in his or her own vehicle and never in the vehicle of the Operation Red Nose volunteers. Other passengers may also ride in the client’s vehicle (just as long as there are enough seat belts) and will be dropped off before the owner's car is taken to the requested destination. The service is confidential. The volunteers commit to be discreet by signing a form in which they agree not to give any details that could help identify a client.
Operation Red Nose is a unique program that helps to prevent drinking and driving. Essentially, it is a volunteer driving service provided during the Holiday Season to all drivers who have been drinking or who do not feel fit to drive their own vehicle. It is an original and free way of getting a safe ride in one’s own vehicle without driving it! Since 1984, Operation Red Nose’s mission has been to encourage responsible behaviour with regard to impaired driving in a non-judgmental manner by enabling communities to provide a free and confidential chauffeur service to their members, the financial benefits of which are redistributed to local organizations dedicated to youth.
The Service A CONFIDENTIAL, EFFICIENT AND FREE SERVICE How does the service work? The Operation Red Nose service is provided by a team of three volunteers. Two of them, the client driver and the navigator, ride with the client in his or her vehicle while the other volunteer, the escort driver, follows them behind in their own car to pick the volunteers up at the end of the ride.
Volunteers Needed! Want to get involved with Operation Red Nose Brampton? There’s always room! We will need drivers and navigators, but we also need dispatchers, mascots and mascot handlers. If you are interested in participating in this exciting campaign, please contact Heather LeBlanc at 905-451-3113, ext. 3224 or at heather.leblanc@on.sja.ca.
St. John Ambulance Brampton is pleased to host Operation Red Nose Brampton. 2011 marks their third year as host to this lifesaving program.

Some surety A wife accompanied her husband to get a haircut. While waiting, she starts reading a magazine. She liked a particular hairstyle for herself, and asked the receptionist if she could take the magazine next door to make a copy of the photo. “Leave some ID, a driver’s licence or a credit card,” the receptionist said. “But my husband is here getting a haircut,” she explained. “Yes”, replied the receptionist. “But I need something you’ll come back for.” Tough choice Wife to a drunk husband: “From now on, if your lips touch liquor, you will never touch mine. What are you thinking? Husband: “Deciding, 18-year-old scotch or 36-year-old lips”. Next one After a young couple brought home their new baby, the wife suggested that her husband should try his hand at changing diapers. “I’m busy,” he said. “I’ll do the next one.” The next time came around and she asked again. The husband narrowed his eyes as he looked at his wife. “I didn’t mean the next diaper. I meant the next baby.” Mental case Mad men are given a test to check their mental state. The instructor draws a door on the wall and orders them to go out. They start rushing to the door but one remains sitting. The instructor goes to him and asks; “why didn’t you join the others?” He replies, “Let them fight, they forgot I have the keys”.

Ear Infections
The change of weather from fall to winter marks the beginning of yet another cold and flu season. Although not as commonly known, this change in weather also signals the beginning of ear infection season. The most common type of ear infection is called acute otitis media, which simply means an infection of the middle ear. This is the area of the ear that is located just behind the eardrum. This air filled space is what houses the tiny vibrating bones of the ear. An ear infection is usually caused by a virus or bacteria that most often results from a preexisting illness such as a cold or flu. However, any illness which causes congestion and swelling of the nasal passages or throat can initiate an ear infection. Swelling and inflammation of the eustachian tubes, which connect the middle ear to the back of the throat, can also cause ear infections. The signs and symptoms of ear infections usually appear rapidly. Common symptoms include ear pain, headache, fever, decreased hearing, fluid discharge from the ear and sore throat. In more serious cases, patients
may experience a loss of balance, vomiting and diarrhea. Ear infections may occur as result of an underlying more serious medical condition. Thus, it is important to seek medical attention if the symptoms last
for more than a few days or significant discharge from the ear is observed. Your physician will usually be able to reach a diagnosis based on your medical history and a physical examination. However, sometimes more sophisticated diagnostic testing is needed to reach or confirm a diagnosis. Diagnostic tests that measure the movement of the eardrum will give your physician a better idea of how much swelling and pressure is present in the middle ear. The good news is that most ear infections do not require treatment with antibiotics. Treatment usually consists of pain control measures. Eardrops and pain medication are by far the most widely prescribed
treatments. To add to this, placing a warm, moist cloth over the affected ear may help to decrease the pain. If the ear infection does not respond to conservative treatments, a course of antibiotics will be prescribed to help the body eliminate the infection. It is important to follow your physician’s directions closely as failing to do so can lead to recurring infections. It is very rare for ear infections to cause permanent or long term complications. However, frequent or persistent infections may lead to impaired hearing and spread of the infection to other locations of the body. The prevention of ear infections is really quite simple. Try to avoid common colds and other illnesses by practicing good personal hygiene. Frequent and thorough hand washing and avoiding crowded public places are always a good idea during the fall and winter months. Keep these simple prevention measures in mind and you will be well on your way to preventing an ear infection this season. Until next month, drive safely!
