Bank of Canada leaves rates unchanged, raises economic outlook
The Bank of Canada has announced that it is maintaining its target for the overnight rate at 1 per cent. The Bank Rate is correspondingly 1.25% and the deposit rate is 0.75%. The global economic recovery is proceeding at a somewhat faster pace than the Bank had anticipated, although risks remain elevated. Private domestic demand in the United States has picked up and will be reinforced by recently announced monetary and fiscal stimulus. European growth has also been slightly stronger than anticipated. The recovery in Canada is proceeding broadly as anticipated, with a period of more modest growth and the beginning of the expected rebalancing of demand. The contribution of government spending is expected to wind down this year, consistent with announced fiscal plans. Stretched household balance sheets are expected to restrain the pace of consumption growth and residential investment. In contrast, business investment will likely continue to rebound strongly, owing to stimulative financial conditions and competitive imperatives. Net exports
are projected to contribute more to growth going forward, supported by stronger U.S. activity and global demand for commodities. Overall, the Bank projects the economy will expand by 2.4 per cent in 2011 and 2.8 per cent in 2012 – a slightly firmer profile than had been anticipated in the October Monetary Policy Report (MPR). With a little more excess supply in the near term, the Bank continues to expect that the economy will return to full capacity by the end of 2012. Reflecting all of these factors, the Bank has decided to maintain the target for the overnight rate at 1 per cent. This leaves considerable monetary stimulus in place, consistent with achieving the 2 per cent inflation target in an environment of significant excess supply in Canada.

Fermenting Tanks Arrive at Molson Coors Toronto Brewery Since arrival at Hamilton Port Authority in December, six large fermenting tanks on route to the Molson Coors Toronto Brewery have generated significant interest with the residents of Ontario. Each of the impressive tanks measures 45 meters in length and weighs over 44 tons. Once installed they will represent a 20 per cent increase in capacity at the Toronto brewery, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, while launching its innovative Molson M lager in Ontario next month. Combined, the six tanks can hold up to 5.86 million bottles of beer.

Kia Motors’ design-led transformation has delivered eye-catching vehicles such as the Soul, Forte Koup, Sorento and Sportage that bear strong resemblances to the concept cars that preceded them and at the 2011 North American International Auto Show, the brand’s U.S. design studio unveiled its latest design statement - the “KV7” concept. Conceived as a modern-day “activity van,” the KV7 concept challenges the notion that vans are strictly for family transportation and reveals a vision for a vehicle with the functionality to transport a large number of people and their belongings while also serving as a connected social hub for groups of friends and adventure-seekers. The KV7 concept’s design stands in sharp contrast to the dramatically raked windshields and wedgeshaped noses found throughout the van segment, and builds on the philosophy of “embracing the box” established by Kia’s funky Soul urban passenger vehicle to create a unique and alluring design language that brings SUV-like qualities to the segment. Kia Motors’ design-led transformation has infused emotion and passion into the brand’s lineup of new and recently introduced vehicles; inspiration for the KV7 concept was found in the simplicity of elegant box shapes such as sleek smart phones and classic pieces of luggage. The KV7’s wide stance is paired with an A-pillar
and windshield design that is less vertical than traditional minivans; its smooth exterior skin and 20-inch wheels exude a modern appearance while projecting the confidence and strength of an SUV. The KV7 concept’s most striking feature is its passenger-side gullwing door, which creates a massive point-of-entry to the lounge-like interior when opened in conjunction with the pillar-less front passenger door. Despite its non-traditional look, the KV7’s length (191.85 in.), width (80.0 in.) and wheelbase (122.0 in.) are consistent with the van segment allowing for flexible seating configurations and a multitude of storage options. The KV7 is Wi-Fi enabled, providing both the front and rear displays with Internet capabilities and the ability for multiple passengers to connect their smart phones to the vehicle at one time and sign on to social networking sites. The final element that separates the KV7 concept from the rest of the minivan crowd can be found under the hood - the concept is powered by Kia’s new Theta II 2.0-liter GDI turbocharged engine which is capable of delivering up to 285 horsepower, and is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission to deliver V6-type power and performance while achieving better than 30 miles per gallon on the highway.

Prevent personal fraud now E

By Sarah Twomey
(NC)—Over the last few years, an increasing number of headlines about people who have lost their lives’ savings due to ponzi schemes have appeared. Unfortunately, this type of personal devastation is not restricted to North America; in fact, it’s worldwide problem. Luckily, there are things you can do right now to ensure that you don’t also become a victim. Step 1: Do your research — How well do you know your advisor? The best way to protect yourself against fraud is to be proactive. If you’re in the market for a new financial advisor, ask your friends and family for a referral. Has the advisor been well trained? Do they have a strong foundation in financial education and certification? Do they work for a reputable company? If they’re independent, would they be recommended by any of their current clients? It’s important to check their credentials with the Financial Advisors Association of Canada, the local better business bureau or the local regulatory body’s information centre or website. Remember that an advisor who sells insurance products must be licensed by a provincial oversight agency. Step 2: Keep a cool head When you meet with your potential advisor, make sure you’re not swayed by a persons’ title or by their sales pitch. Be particularly wary of anyone who promises high returns or asks you to write a personal cheque to them instead of their firm. And remember, a lack of transparency should be considered an im-
mediate “red flag”. For example: • You should never be asked to keep a secret. • A representative should never avoid stating who they work for. • You should never feel pressure to invest in “sure things”. Step 3: Learn all you can Before purchasing an investment or insurance product, it’s important to identify your financial needs and to learn about the different products. For example, there are typically three types of life insursance: • Term life insurance provides coverage for a set period of time. • Permanent life insurance provides lifetime coverage. • Universal life insurance provides lifetime coverage and tax-free savings opportunities. When you meet with your advisor, remember to ask questions like: • Will the premiums go up? • Are the returns guaranteed? • Are there any related tax implications? Step 4: Be patient Congratulations. You’ve done your due diligence in terms of securing your financial future and avoiding personal fraud. But, finding the right advisor may take time. Stay the course and be patient. To learn more, visit your province’s financial services regulatory body and the Canadian Life and Health Insur-
ance Association. More immediate tips and suggestions can be found at www.desjardinslifeinsurance.com.
GO Transit launches text message updates to keep passengers in the know on the GO
GO Transit’s successful E-News notification system is adding another option to keep passengers instantly informed of service changes. GO riders may now sign up to receive SMS text messages directly to their mobile device, simply by subscribing for free at www.gotransit.com/enews. “We are very excited to offer even more ways to communicate with our passengers. We’ve promised
to keep our customers in the know, and SMS messages will reach out to even more of our customer-base”, said GO Transit President Gary McNeil. E-News messages, either by email or SMS text, include information on service improvements, new schedules, service status updates, station updates, and other news of interest to passengers. Email and SMS alerts are fully customizable, al-
lowing each subscriber to select their train line, station, or bus route, and the message distribution can be limited to particular times of day, such as morning or afternoon peak-periods. GO Transit has signed up more than 62,000 E-News subscribers since 2005. With the addition of SMS messaging, alerts will be more accessible to more passengers, supporting GO’s customer-first Passenger Charter and the importance providing timely, relevant information. GO Transit is the Province of Ontario’s interregional public transit system linking Toronto with the surrounding regions of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Following the success of the contest held during the first school term, the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) has decided to hold a second contest for teachers and students who enroll in The City, an online interactive resource that teaches basic financial skills. Teachers who register to the program can enter a draw to win a SMART Board™, while students can win one of three laptop computers. To be eligible, students and teachers in any Canadian province or territory must register and participate in The City before March 31, 2011. The contest rules are available on www.fcac.gc.ca, or can be obtained by calling the FCAC Consumer Contact Centre toll-free at 1-866-4613222. Winners of the first term contest will be announced in February. The City is a free, Web-based
learning program developed by the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) and the British Columbia Securities Commission (BCSC) in order to help educators teach young people financial skills that will be useful to them throughout their lives. It is a great way for students to learn more about the difference between their wants and needs, budgeting, managing money, keeping expenses under control, building savings, using credit wisely and the basics of insurance and investments. They also learn how to avoid getting into debt and becoming victims of fraud. If the students learn from mistakes made in the virtual world, they can avoid making what could be a costly mistake in the real world. FCAC’s gateway to financial education, The Money Belt, provides tips, quizzes and interactive resources for teachers, students and parents.
Scotiabank and the Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL) has launched a new initiative to support hockey in the Greater Toronto Area and to attract new participants from all backgrounds to the sport. Each season, the Scotiabank GTHL New to the Game Development Grant will distribute a maximum of $25,000 among GTHL association and member teams that demonstrate a program plan targeted at attracting new participants to hockey. “The popularity of hockey in Canada is stronger than ever, and the excitement of the sport is being carried into several of Canada’s diverse communities,” said John Doig, Senior Vice-President, Toronto Region. “Through this program, Scotiabank is looking forward to introducing the game of hockey to a new generation of players while instilling teamwork and interpersonal skills that will last a lifetime.” Between Monday, January 10 and Friday, February 11, 2011, any GTHL association or member club may apply for the program funding individually,
or in collaboration with one another. Applicants must demonstrate their program plan targeted at attracting new participants to hockey in their local community. Scotiabank and the GTHL will collectively choose the most viable program(s) from the pool of submissions and distribute the necessary funds totaling $25,000. “The Scotiabank GTHL New to the Game Development Grant enables our member clubs and associations to engage and interact with their community on a new level, helping grow hockey and attract new players through the approved programs,” said GTHL President John Gardner. “For the first time, member associations of the GTHL will have the additional funding to reach out to their communities and invite youth from any background to participate in Canada’s favourite sport.” For more information about the program or to download an application form, please visit the GTHL website at www.gthlcanada.com

PM announces Red Tape Reduction Commission
Small and medium-sized businesses to benefit from reduced administrative burden Prime Minister Stephen Harper has announced the creation of the Red Tape Reduction Commission, which will work to reduce the burden of federal regulatory requirements on Canadian enterprises, especially small- and medium-sized businesses. “Small and medium-sized businesses are a critical driver of the Canadian economy,” said the Prime Minister. “This initiative will help ensure that they can grow, prosper and create jobs without being impeded by unnecessary government regulations.” The Red Tape Reduction Commission, chaired by Rob Moore, Minister of State (Small Business and Tourism), will help find effective and lasting solutions to support Canadian small- and medium-sized
businesses. It will consult with Canadians and Canadian businesses to identify irritants that have a clear detrimental effect on growth, competitiveness and innovation. The Commission will also look at the cost associated with federal regulatory requirements that businesses face, and provide advice on permanent solutions for reducing the overall compliance burden. The Commission will hold consultations with Canadians and Canadian businesses during a series of round tables later this month. An online consultation process will also take place (www.reduceredtape.gc.ca) before the Commission issues its recommendations to the Government in the fall of 2011.
Conservatives Not Serious About Red Tape Liberal Small Business Critic Navdeep Bains has panned Conservative announcement to set-up a RedTape Reduction Commission, saying the news leaves small business “no better off today than they were yesterday”. “This idea was announced in the last budget but they’ve taken almost a year to create a bureaucracy to tackle the growth of bureaucracy…its beyond belief ” said Mr. Bains. “They’ve been in power for 5 years, if this was so important why didn’t they act sooner?” Bains pointed out that most of the work that has been accomplished in reducing red tape up until now
was the result of the Paperwork Reduction Initiative started by the previous Liberal Government. “Before one more piece of red tape is cut, this new Commission will take its time travelling the country at great expense but won’t report back till next fall,” said Mr. Bains. “That’s almost another year before we can even start debating what regulations we should be cutting. The Government clearly isn’t taking this issue seriously.”
Mortgage rules toughened to rein in consumer debt
The Honourable Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance, and the Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of Natural Resources have announced prudent adjustments to the rules for government-backed insured mortgages to support the long-term stability of Canada’s housing market and support hardworking Canadian families saving through home ownership. “Canada’s well-regulated housing sector has been an important strength that allowed us to avoid
the mistakes of other countries and helped protect us from the worst of the recent global recession,” said Minister Flaherty. “The prudent measures announced today build on that advantage by encouraging hard-working Canadian families to save by investing in their homes and future.” “The economy continues to be our Government’s top priority,” continued Minister Paradis. “Our Government will continue to take the necessary actions to ensure stability and economic certainty in
Canada’s housing market.” The new measures: • Reduce the maximum amortization period to 30 years from 35 years for new government-backed insured mortgages with loan-tovalue ratios of more than 80 per cent. This will significantly reduce the total interest payments Canadian families make on their mortgages, allow Canadian families to build up equity in their homes more quickly, and help Canadians pay off their mortgages before they retire. • Lower the maximum amount Canadians can borrow in refinancing their mortgages to 85 per cent from 90 per cent of the value of their homes. This will promote saving through home ownership and limit the repackaging of consumer debt into mortgages guaranteed by taxpayers. • Withdraw government insurance backing on lines of credit secured by homes, such as home equity lines of credit, or HELOCs. This will ensure that risks associated with consumer debt products used to borrow funds unrelated to house purchases are managed by the financial institutions and not borne by taxpayers. The adjustments to the mortgage insurance guarantee framework will come into force on March 18, 2011. The withdrawal of government insurance backing on lines of credit secured by homes will come into force on April 18, 2011.

HIV in Canada - Should you be getting tested?
(NC)— Dr. Brian Conway was on the front-lines during the first Canadian cases of HIV and AIDS. He’s now a leading Canadian expert on HIV/AIDS. Are people hearing that they should be getting tested for HIV? The rate of HIV is unchanged in Canada in the past 12 years, and experts think that as many as a third of those who are HIV-positive don’t know they’re infected. Testing isn’t happening as broadly as we would like. People who are at risk aren’t getting tested. We should be happy that Canada’s rate of HIV isn’t going up, but we should be disappointed that it’s not going down. Who should get tested? What causes HIV is widely known. It’s transmitted by sexual and blood contact of various kinds. So anyone who thinks they have engaged in risky behaviour should get tested. If you’re not sure, then err on the side of caution and get tested. What types of tests exist? There are many different ways of getting tested. Point-of-care tests exist where the results are available in two minutes. You walk in, they take a drop of blood and results can show if you’re negative in two minutes. Positive tests must be confirmed by
blood test, but current technology makes a negative test almost 100% reliable, unless you have been recently infected. You can go to a clinic, an STD clinic or you can see your doctor. You can get tested anonymously or with a pseudonym. It’s easy. It’s available. Get it done. How often should people get tested? People at highest risk should be tested twice a year and immediately if they think they have symptoms consistent with being HIV positive, including flu-like symptoms, fever or headache. Beyond that, anyone who thinks they are at risk should get tested once and retested if there’s an ongoing or specific risk. It’s been years since the HIV/AIDS was first diagnosed in Canada. What’s different today? The availability of new treatments has made HIV/ AIDS into a chronic disease and offers people hope that they will outlive their disease.
Let it snow!
(NC)—Canadian winters. They’re known for heavy snowfall, freezing temperatures and strong winds. Some parts of the country even face seven months of the season—which, yes, often equals seven months of shoveling the driveway. Enter the snow blower. This could be the time to consider investing in one, with forecasts that this winter will be longer and more intense than last year. Before purchasing a snow blower, keep in mind your budget and the size of your property, and then compare models, sizes, and prices. Larger properties require heavier equipment. If your driveway can fit more than four cars or is on a slope, you may want to invest in a blower with a track-drive system that provides superior traction through all type of snow conditions. With the benefit of pliable, low-temperature rubber tracks that come with sure-gripping cleats, you will achieve solid traction and ideal balance. A smaller driveway and less sidewalk space will benefit from more agile equipment. Smaller snow blowers allow for easier maneuvering along sidewalks and steps and come with a convenient pull
How to buy the perfect snow blower
start or electric start option. Also, consider one with complete CVT transmission, which means that there is no manual gear shifting, just smooth lever control from high speed to low speed. Snow shoveling is a strenuous activity that is stressful on the heart, muscles and joints—not to mention the possibility of frostbite and dehydration—which makes investing in a quality snow blower a smart choice this season. Lifestyle and leisure equipment company GIObikes.com has a range of reasonably priced snow blowers to choose from— even a pink one.
Don’t stash it, cash it!
Holiday debt is likely on the minds of many Canadians this month, according to research that reveals nearly 30 per cent of Canadians expected to incur some form of shortfall due to holiday splurging. Whether they used a credit card to pay for purchases or borrowed money to fund their holiday shopping, Canadians are likely feeling the post-holiday pinch. Based on the results of the eBay Canada-sponsored survey, Canadians should consider reselling holiday gifts that missed the mark to reduce their holiday debt, cashing in on unwanted items rather than stashing them in the basement or the back of a closet. In fact, based on last year’s holiday season, approximately four-in-10 Canadians received at least one unwanted item, some worth more than $200. Three-quarters of Canadians, however, don’t plan to recoup the value of unwanted holiday gifts by selling them. Some will even let the items go to waste, either “misplacing” them or throwing them in the garbage.

Unwanted gifts can be the solution to Canadians’ holiday debt
“There’s nothing wrong with tastefully and discreetly reselling or re-gifting an item,” said Cathie Mostowyk, eBay Canada’s budget expert and editor of the Shoestring Shopping Guide. “Our research reveals that three-quarters of Canadians don’t plan to sell unwanted holiday gifts this year, choosing to let the item go unused instead of taking the opportunity to make some extra cash.” An unwrapped and unwanted holiday gift doesn’t have to collect dust in the basement or take up valuable closet space. Canadians looking to re-gift or resell unwanted items should follow a few simple tips: • Be thoughtful. Re-gifting an item is acceptable as long as it is thoughtful and personal based on the intended recipient. Someone else will appreciate an article of clothing or a great book even if the item doesn’t perfectly match your taste. • Be careful. There’s nothing more humiliating than re-gifting a present to the original gift-giver. Keep track of gifts and their giver as you unwrap
them to avoid any gifting goof-ups. • Be generous. If you don’t feel comfortable regifting the item to someone you know, consider giving it to a charitable organization. Your gift will make a difference to someone who really needs it. • Be discreet. Discreetly selling the item on eBay.ca may be the easiest way to spare both the giftgiver’s feelings and your closet space. eBay makes it easy and, in some cases, free to list unwanted holiday gifts. Depending on the starting price of the item, sellers can take advantage of free insertion fees. By using eBay’s Sell Your Item form, it’s easy for sellers - whether they’re novices or experts - to post the item on the world’s largest online marketplace with a few simple steps. Sellers who are unsure of the gift’s value can search for similar items on eBay.ca via their computer or mobile phone. It’s a great way to ensure that they recoup the gift’s full value.

Peel Police - 12 Division Car Theft Crime Prevention Project
Members of Peel Regional Police 12 Division have initiated a Crime Prevention Auto theft awareness campaign. During the winter months, police are once again reminding citizens about the dangers of leaving a vehicle running while unattended in the driveway. Every day residents intentionally put themselves in a position where one of their most valuable assets may easily be stolen. Despite many warnings from police, drivers continue to leave their vehicles running, while unattended and unlocked, in order to warm them up. Drivers should be aware that, in these circumstances, it only takes a few seconds for thieves to drive up to your vehicle and steal it. During the weeks of Monday, January 17, to Friday, March 4, 2011, officers from 12 Division will be going door to door handing out awareness pamphlets specific to “start-up auto thefts and offering crime prevention tips relating to auto thefts. These crimes have dire consequences for everyone. In many cases the thieves are now in possession of the driver’s valuables, including house keys, purses, wallets and briefcases. These crimes also have a broader impact to the community, as they cause increases in insurance premiums and create a potential risk to the public, as a result of criminals operating
Hiring NOW in Brampton
stolen vehicles on our streets. These crimes are not only perpetrated by opportunistic thieves looking for a joy-ride. Teams of thieves can conduct surveillance, as the cold weather hits, and make note of those vehicles that may be left running unattended. Many of these cars, particularly newer high-end models, are then shipped overseas to be sold. Police recommend the following tips to help prevent “warm-upâ€? thefts: • Don’t leave your vehicle running and unattended – even in your driveway; • If you must warm up your car, use a remote starter or use a spare key with no other important keys attached to it. Lock the vehicle with your main set of keys; • Park the vehicle in a place which is easily visible to you from inside your house; • Install a bright motion activated light in your driveway; and • Never leave identification or valuable items in your vehicle when it is running while unattended. An unattended running vehicle is an easy target. A warm-up theft is one of the most preventable and avoidable crimes. Together we can work toward eliminating this crime and make Peel a safer community.

REALTY / FINANCE 10 Jan 19 - Feb 1, 2011 Twitter insights to help grow your business (NC)—In the competitive world of real estate, much of what translates into success between agents and homeowners comes down to trust and relationships. While there’s no substitute to quality face time in real estate, there are some good digital marketing lessons from this industry that can be used by smallor medium-size businesses looking to expand and grow. At the heart of the matter is Twitter -- a service where users post short, public messages of up to140 characters each. While larger organizations use Twitter to monitor consumer engagement with their brands and as an outlet for public relations, smaller businesses can use Twitter effectively to build their network locally. Real estate professionals in particular, are proving themselves to be savvy Twitter users, working to expand their networks and create an online presence that reflects their personality, interests and their expertise in conducting real estate transactions. Phil Soper, president and chief executive at Royal LePage Canada encourages agents to use Twitter with a less hard-edge marketing approach and more of a flavour of interpersonal sharing. “Yes, ensure people
understand what you do for a living but avoid constant patter about that home you have for sale,” Soper advises. “People will be interested in your insights and information. Be yourself. We’re salespeople, and all good salespeople like to share what’s on their mind.” Sebastian Albrecht, a sales representative at Royal LePage Westside in Vancouver and avid blogger and Twitter user, offers this insight: “I view Twitter as a tool to reinforce relationships, to give people an insight into who I am, and to demonstrate the skill and knowledge with which I conduct my business.” Albrecht also received unprecedented local media attention for his climb of Vancouver’s Grouse Mountain, called the “Grouse Grind,” in which he ascended the mountain 14 times in one day to raise funds for the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation. “Everyone in Vancouver can relate to the Grouse Grind. Either we have all done it, or know someone who has. As a result, people have a concept of just how difficult it [climbing 14 times] is to accomplish,” he said. In Albrecht’s case, the local aspect, doing something out of the ordinary for a good cause, and using social media to leverage it appears to be a recipe for success.
Home office income tax deductions
(NC)—Did you know that the Income Tax Act limits the circumstances under which a self-employed individual can deduct the costs related to a workspace in the home? They are confined to situations where the space is used exclusively to earn income from a business and on a regular and continuous basis for meeting clients, customers or patients; or if it is the individual’s principal place of business. This claim may be based on the proportionate space within the home that is used as a workplace. Eligible expenses include rent, mortgage interest, realty taxes, insurance, utilities and maintenance. It is generally not advisable to claim capital-cost allowance (CCA), on a portion of the home because that portion would then not qualify for the principal residence exemption when it is ultimately sold. Similarly, claiming 50 per cent or more business use of the home or making major structural alterations to adapt it to business use will trigger a “change in use”, resulting in loss of the principal residence exemption. The amount a taxpayer can claim is limited to his or her business income before deductions for home workspace. Any unused amount may then be carried forward and claimed in the subsequent year against related business income. To the extent that unused amounts cannot be claimed in the following year, they can be carried forward indefinitely to be claimed at the first available opportunity. TIPS: • A bed-and-breakfast enterprise may also qualify as workspace in the home, provided the guest rooms are located inside the owner’s home and not in a separate dwelling. Calculate the percentage of space that is designated exclusively for guests, as well for joint-use of owner and guests, in order to determine a realistic apportionment of expenses that can be deducted for business purposes. • Don’t forget to include business storage space
in the basement and elsewhere, when determining the proportion of your home used for commercial purposes. Reference: 2010-11 Personal Tax Planning Guide, CGA Ontario, www.cga-ontario.org.

Homeowners looking to save money by buying energy efficient new homes (NC)—With increasing energy costs, many homeowners are digging deep to find ways of saving money any way they can. One sure way is to get the most out of the money you spend building, buying, or maintaining your home. If a new home is on the horizon for you and your family in the coming months, you may be pleased to know that the number of energy-efficient new homes being built across Canada is increasing. According to Natural Resources Canada’s (NRCan) Office of Energy Efficiency, an ever-increasing number of builders are lining up to participate in labeling programs that promote energy-efficient new homes. More and more homeowners across Canada are becoming familiar with the EnerGuide Rating System (ERS) administered by Natural Resources Canada. New home builders participating in the ERS initiative work with an energy advisor to determine energy efficiency upgrade packages that they can offer you before construction of your home begins. After a house is completed, the energy advisor visits the home to
The Mortgage Practice
verify the energy efficiency upgrades were included as planned. The homeowner is then provided with the evaluation report and official label that shows the EnerGuide rating of the home. The energy efficiency features are considered when developing building plans, and the EnerGuide system estimates the energy use and efficiency of a new house and assigns a rating to the house. It may cost more money initially to add energy-efficient upgrades and features; however, according to a recent study done by Enerquality Corporation, 88% of homeowners perceive energy efficiency to be important to their purchase decision. Short-term pain for long-term gain? Apparently so. If you are planning to build or buy a new home in the coming months, spend some time on the NRCan website at www.newhomes.nrcan.gc.ca or call 1-800-387-2000 to order publications *EnerGuide is an official mark of Natural Resources Canada

Canada Post gets a hop on the Year of the Rabbit with a new set of stamps E

Canada Post has welcomed the beginning of the Year of the Rabbit by issuing a set of stamps and related products to mark the Lunar New Year. This is the 15th year Canada Post has issued a Lunar New Year stamp. The domestic rate commemorative features a rabbit on the heels of another rabbit, creating a repeating image of rabbits that appear to be hopping across the five-by-five pane PERMANENT TM stamps. “This image was a unique way of visually connecting one stamp to the next on the domestic pane,” said Paul Haslip, a partner at HM&E Design, the firm that designed the stamp. “Finding a unique yet simple way of visualizing the rabbit was our starting point in the design. While the rabbit is not as dramatic as the tiger or the snake, it does leap over obstacles.” The international stamp was inspired by traditional Chinese embroidery. The image of two rabbits chasing each other in an endless circle is based on a traditional Chinese robe medallion. The stamp also uses gold foil to mimic the metallic gold thread in the embroidered design. This element also signifies that this is the Year of the Metal Rabbit, which occurs every 60 years. The Lunar New Year series is one of the most popular ever issued by Canada Post. They are also one of the most challenging to conceive, design and produce, said Alain Leduc, Stamp Design Manager with Canada Post. “There’s the need to come up with a design that’s as multi-dimensional and powerful as the previous one, but also something very different from the past stamps in the series.”

NEOSSat : The world’s first satellite dedicated to detecting asteroids and space debris
(NC)—In 2002, two asteroids made close approaches to Earth just months apart. In March, asteroid 2002 EM7 passed within 463,000 kilometres, not far beyond the moon’s orbit. Then, in June, asteroid 2002 MN passed within 120,000 kilometres, less than a third of the distance to the moon. It was one of the closest asteroid flybys on record. Media reports of these events characterized them as “near misses” and emphasized the fact that the asteroids were not detected on their way in, but days later as they were leaving Earth’s neighbourhoods. In the case of 2002 MN, much was made of the fact that it approached the day side of Earth, literally coming “out of the blue.” This is a blind spot where objects located near the sun, as seen from Earth, cannot be detected by ground-based telescopes that monitor asteroid activity. These telescopes can only look for asteroids in the night sky, on the side of the
earth opposite from the sun. A tiny Canadian satellite called NEOSSat (Near Earth Object Surveillance Satellite) will help solve this problem. Scheduled for launch in 2011, it will be the first satellite dedicated specifically to the search for asteroids. The microsatellite will carry a small but highly precise telescope able to detect and track satellites and debris in Earth’s orbit’s, as well as faint as-
teroids against the dark background of deep space. Overall, NEOSSat is expected to discover about 1000 near-Earth objects. Circling the earth every 100 minutes, Canada’s NEOSSat will scan space near the sun to pinpoint asteroids well before they pass near our planet. The Canadian Space Agency and Defence Research and Development Canada are partners in the design and use of this high performance satellite. Dr. Alan Hildebrand of the University of Calgary is leading the Near Earth Asteroid Survey with collaborating scientists from various universities while Dr. Brad Wallace from the Defence Research and Development Canada is the principal investigator for the High Earth Object Survey. More information on NEOSSat can be found at the Canadian Space Agency web site at: www.asc-csa. gc.ca/eng/sciences/neossat.asp

John Milloy Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities
Starting next September, students will find it easier to transfer credits among Ontario colleges and universities -- saving them time and money. Ontario’s new credit transfer system will reduce the need for students to repeat similar courses or years at different institutions -- allowing them to complete their studies sooner. Under the new system, colleges and universities will work together to develop more opportunities to transfer credits between institutions and provide on-campus advisors and orientation programs to help students transfer their credits. Students will also have access to a centralized website that will help them identify which credits can be transferred. In addition, the province will introduce a new Credit Transfer Innovation Fund to help universities and colleges develop more credit transfer options for students. This will make it easier for students to determine what programs and courses will work best for them. Ontario’s new credit transfer system will be implemented over the next five years. This is part of the McGuinty government’s Open Ontario plan to help every student succeed and build a knowledge-based economy for the future.

Chrysler Group Celebrates Production Launch of the AllNew 2011 Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger at Brampton Assembly Plant • •
2011 Dodge Challenger also rolls off the line Chrysler invests U.S. $1 billion since 2008 to prepare for launch of new vehicles • Significant launches and investments in 2010 set foundation for 2011 • Chrysler Canada ends 2010 on a high note • Plant embraces World Class Manufacturing (WCM) Chrysler Group recently celebrated the launch of production of the all-new 2011 Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger as well as the 2011 Dodge Challenger at its Brampton Assembly Plant. The vehicles are three of the 16 new or significantly refreshed products the Company debuted last year. Chrysler Group CEO Sergio Marchionne and Chrysler Canada President and CEO Reid Bigland, along with the Ontario Minister of Finance Dwight Duncan, Brampton Mayor Susan Fennell, CAW President Ken Lewenza and other local officials, joined employees in recognizing the importance of the plant, the workforce and the all-new Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger in the future success of the Company. The Company has invested more than U.S. $1 billion since 2008 for the launch of the 300, Charger and Challenger for assembly, stamping, material handling and tooling. “This is an important day for Chrysler Group and the CAW as it launches two new products, thereby preserving good manufacturing jobs in Canada,” said Ken Lewenza, President, CAW. “The strong relationship between our two organizations will contribute to the future success of Chrysler, our employees and the

products we so proudly build.” In preparation for the launch of the all-new 2011 Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger, employees at BAP began transforming the facility as part of World Class Manufacturing (WCM), an extensive and thorough process to restore all facilities to their original and maximum functionality. With the implementation of WCM, many improvements have been made to the Brampton plant, including high-efficiency lighting, upgraded cafeteria, remodeled bathrooms and freshly painted colorful walls. These facility improvements have increased the morale of the nearly 2,900 employees working on two shifts and given them a new sense of purpose. As a result, employees felt empowered to offer more than 5,000 suggestions on other improvements that could be made throughout the plant. The Brampton plant also invested U.S. $20 million to establish a Metrology Centre onsite that would further improve quality. Used throughout the Fiat system, the 35,000-square-foot facility joins the Jefferson North (Detroit) Assembly Plant as one of the first Chrysler Group facilities and one of only a few Canadian automotive manufacturing facilities to utilize such technology. Another process used for the launch of the 2011 Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger vehicle design borrowed from Fiat is a new roof laser braze process, which allows for a seamless transition from the roof to the door opening. Brampton Assembly invested nearly U.S. $12 million to be the first Chrysler plant to install this new technology.

(NC)—Whether ice and snow make your eyes sparkle or walking in a winter wonderland leaves you cold, with a little imagination you can stay active when the mercury plummets. (If you’re heading outdoors, remember to wear a hat even on moderate days. And if it’s very cold, breathe through a balaclava or scarf.) Research shows that properly designed activities can decrease your arthritis pain, increase your flexibility and overall fitness, and do wonders for your state of mind. The Arthritis Society offers the following tips: Take to the trails. Consider taking a lesson in cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. Both activities have a low impact on your knees, yet work the whole body and can burn an incredible 480 calories per hour even at a relatively relaxed pace. Many winter resorts, ski clubs and provincial parks offer equipment rentals as well as instructions. Play in the snow. Build a snowman or a snow-fort, or make snow angels. Or challenge the neighbours to a game of ‘snow-pitch’. Don’t forget your shovel. That snowy sidewalk has to be cleared anyway, so why not turn shovelling into an impromptu workout? Shovelling snow requires as much energy (read: burns as many calories) as running at 15 km per hour. A fully-loaded shovel can weigh up to 25 pounds. But you can minimize the strain on your muscles and joints and still get a great work out by taking your time and stretching before hand. Walk the dog. Borrow one if necessary. Or make a walking/chatting date with a friend and reward yourselves with coffee or tea afterward. Discover exercise DVDs. Borrow some beginner’s exercise DVDs from the library (tai chi, stretching and low-impact aerobics are all great options that don’t require lots of gear). When you find one that suits you, invest in your own copy. Sign up for swimming, dancing or tai chi. Many community centres and pools offer low-cost lessons
and exercise classes. Some gyms and dance studios also offer seasonal discounts. Clean your house. Vacuum vigorously. Wash windows and walls. Scrub floors. Clean closets. Conquer dirt and clutter – and work up a sweat! The reward of the workout will be reaped by enjoying a sparkling home. Speak to your doctor before you start a vigorous activity to ensure it’s suitable for you. To learn more about managing arthritis, visit www.arthritis.ca.

Protect yourself and your family by making a silent killer noisy - install a carbon monoxide alarm
Brampton’s Economic Development Office (EDO) recently hosted the second of a series of breakfast seminars on growing markets, partnership opportunities and how businesses can expand their markets globally. The Business Ambassador Breakfast was held at the Courtyard Marriott in Brampton, and touched on doing business in Mexico and the United States. The EDO, in conjunction with the Board of Trade, launched the breakfast series earlier this year to give local business owners a chance to learn more about growing markets, partnership opportunities and how local businesses can expand their markets globally. Each seminar highlights two international countries, with speakers from each area, followed by roundtable sessions providing attendees the opportunity for one-on-one discussions. Ontario is making it easier to get information and services online and saving an estimated $1.3 million of taxpayer money over the next two years. More than 200 websites were reviewed and over 65 sites were selected to be eliminated or merged with other sites by March 2012. Money will be saved through consolidated technology, infrastructure and maintenance costs as result of these changes. Internal government websites are also being reviewed, beginning with a
freeze on developing new ones. Changes underway have already provided over $300,000 in additional savings. As part of the Open Ontario Plan, the government is committed to providing access to online information such as finding a doctor or registering a birth. And eliminating waste and finding savings will help protect services in schools and hospitals that are important to Ontario families and help reduce the deficit and eliminate it completely by 2018.

Legal Assistance Tip:
Visit the Lawyer and Paralegal Directory
(NC)—Most people don’t require legal assistance often. When they do, they may not know where to turn for help. When a legal issue, like making a will or fighting a careless driving charge does come up, you need to make sure it is properly taken care of by a qualified professional. Not getting the right assistance can lead to problems. The Law Society of Upper Canada’s Lawyer and Paralegal Directory can help. It is a handy tool to find information about a licensed lawyer or paralegal. The directory is easy to locate at www.lsuc.on.ca. You can quickly search by name or location to see if a lawyer or paralegal is licensed. You can be sure a licensed lawyer or paralegal is qualified to help with your legal issue. If you have a problem with a licensed lawyer or paralegal, you can complain to the Law Society. The Law Society reviews all com-
plaints. Where appropriate, it disciplines the lawyer or paralegal. If you lose money due to a lawyer’s or
paralegal’s dishonesty, you can apply to the compensation fund to get your money back. Lawyers and paralegals also have insurance, in case they make a mistake. Individuals who are not licensed, and not listed in the directory, are not qualified to provide legal advice and you are unprotected if you hire them. The Law Society does not regulate these individuals. If they are dishonest or make a mistake, it will be difficult to get your money back or fix the mistake. The Law Society recently expanded its directory to include discipline history, detailed practice restriction and trusteeship information. Most legal professionals have no discipline history, but for those who do, discipline information is now easier to access. If you want to be sure you are choosing the right legal professional, visit the Lawyer and Paralegal Directory online.
Online shopping – what you need to know
(NC)—The average Canadian spent about $550 shopping online over the past year with almost three million households reporting some kind of online purchase*. And why not? Online shopping is fast, convenient and allows you to comparison shop at the click of a mouse. While most shopping sites are credible, there are those that prey on trusting consumers. To protect yourself while shopping online, follow these tips: • Know who you’re dealing with. Look for phone numbers, e-mail addresses and street addresses so you can follow up if needed. • Know exactly what you’re buying. The vendor should tell you everything you need to know about the product to make a satisfactory purchase, such as size, colour, weight, texture, warranties and other factures. • Know what you’re agreeing to. Look for detailed information about the terms of sale, the company’s privacy, complaint policies and the expected delivery date and costs. • Read the return policy. The vendor should outline the return policy and any fees associated with it such as shipping costs. • Know exactly what you’re paying. Ask for the total price, including taxes, shipping, insurance and handling. International orders may be subject to customs and brokerage fees. • Look for secure payment methods. Look for an icon of a closed padlock and for an address with https:// as the “s” indicates a secure site. • Be cautious. Never give your credit card information before entering a
site and never buy into unsolicited offers you receive by e-mail. The Canadian Consumer Handbook (www.consumerhandbook.ca), produced by federal, provincial and territorial governments, offers great tips for safe online shopping. Sources: *Ipsos Canadian Inter@ctive Reid Report, 2010 Fact Guide.
US retail giant Target expands to Canada with Zellers purchase Hudson’s Bay Company has announced that its subsidiary, Zellers Inc., has reached an agreement with Target Corporation for C$1.825 billion for the sale of up to 220 leasehold interests that are currently operated as Zellers stores. As part of the transaction, Zellers Inc. will sublease the properties back from Target Corporation upon closing and continue to operate them as Zellers stores for a period of time. Target Corporation expects to open 100 to 150 Target stores throughout Canada in 2013 and 2014. Additionally, it is anticipated that a select number of Zellers locations will be assigned to other retail enterprises. Zellers Inc. will continue to operate a portfolio of certain Zellers stores in specific communities across the country. The sale of these leasehold interests is estimated to create over 20,000 net new jobs in Canada and has the potential to generate over $1.5 billion in Canadian economic activity through the renovation of the Zellers locations. The entry of Target Corporation into the Canadian market will provide a broader retail product offering to Canadian consumers.

Solutions for a productive… sleep. E
(NC)—Sleep is something that everyone needs. Although it’s something that we don’t always get enough of. It’s important to ensure that the time we actually allocate for sleep (day or night) is productively restful. But every person is unique and what works for one may not work for another. Here is a collection of some popular ways to improve sleep, collected by the natural health experts at Webber naturals: 1) Avoid caffeine, carbs and exercise after 8pm. 2) One hour before bed, take L-Theanine, melatonin or 5-HTP (Sleep-Calm contains all three) 3) Don’t watch fast paced TV programs before bed; and read Stephen King during the day! 4) If anxious thoughts keep you awake, take vitamin B1 and sip chamomile tea. 5) MEN - if nighttime urination is a problem, use an herbal prostate supplement like Prostae. 6) WOMEN - menopausal night sweats can be minimized with black cohosh or natural menopause formulas. PMS symptoms can also keep you awake. Try Evening Primrose Oil. 7) Taking medications? Talk to your doctor pharmaceuticals of many kinds can cause sleeplessness. Try a lower dosage or take them early in the day. 8) Fretfulness can be reduced by increasing B

vitamin intake, early in the day, and some people find sublingual (under the tongue) B12 supplements improve sleep. 9) Cover your eyes. Light in the bedroom can interfere with quality and depth of sleep. 10) Earplugs, the soft industrial type, allow you to hear the alarm or the baby but can cut out annoying environmental noises that prevent deep sleep. Besides making you extremely cranky, sleep deprivation can lead to obesity, hypertension, cardiovascular problems and diabetes. Insufficient sleep is
linked to increased risk of motor vehicle accidents and other safety issues at home and on the job. Don’t let sleepless nights ruin your days. Share the approaches that work for you by emailing Webber naturals consumer education service via info@webbernaturals.com
OPP & OFSC UNVEIL NEW S.T.O.P. LOGO DURING SNOWMOBILE SAFETY WEEK
Now easier to distinguish trail enforcement personnel The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) have unveiled a new S.T.O.P. (Snowmobile Trail Officer Patrol) logo as the OPP and OFSC jointly promoted Provincial Snowmobile Safety Week at OPP General Headquarters. Provincial Snowmobile Safety Week runs from January 16 - 22, 2011. Snowmobilers will now find it easier to distinguish a volunteer S.T.O.P. officer from an OPP
officer on OFSC trails this winter. The new logo will be worn on S.T.O.P. officers’ snowmobile suits or patrol vests. Ontario’s snowmobile trails are patrolled by OPP Detachment Members, OPP S.A.V.E. (Snow Machine, All Terrain Vehicle and Vessels Enforcement) Teams in partnership with S.T.O.P. officers. The S.T.O.P. program is a community-based enforcement program carried out through a partnership between the OPP and the OFSC.
S.T.O.P. officers are OFSC volunteers who earn appointment as Special Constables and designation as Provincial Offences Officers. This provides them with the authority to enforce the Motorized Snow Vehicles Act on OFSC prescribed trails. While they perform their duties with an OPP officer much of the time, they can operate unsupervised if fully trained. Off the trails, S.T.O.P. officers provide education and awareness about snowmobile safety in Ontario.
