Eleven South Asian Canadians were recently felicitated at the third annual Midweek South Asian Awards held in Mississauga. They are not only shining examples for those who ask what Canada has to offer but are also an inspiration for the achievers of tomorrow. Organized by Yudhvir Jaswal (Chief Editor, Midweek Newspaper) and Preet Jaswal, the event was attended by the community’s most influential persons as well as members of the ethnic and mainstream media. Peter Van Loan, Minister of International Trade, was present along with many other Members of Parliament such as Mike Wallace, Terence Young, John McCallum, Judy Sgro, Navdeep Bains, Dr Ruby Dhalla, and Sukh Dhaliwal. The event also saw Senator Salma Ataullahjan, Susan Fennell, Mayor of Brampton, Federal Conservative Party Candidates - Priti Lamba, John Carmichael, Justice of Peace Bobby Hundal, Harpreet Sethi & Ginni Sethi (Radisson Hotel & Grand Victorian). The Peace Bridge Plaza improvements have been completed with a ribbon-cutting ceremony held at the newly constructed laneway in December. “The Peace Bridge is the thirdbusiest Canada-U.S. commercial truck crossing and a key component for international trade with the United States,” said the Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., Member of Parliament for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada. “These improvements will enhance the efficiency and security of this important trade corridor, while contributing to Canada’s long-term economic prosperity.” “This project is an excellent example of how a partnership can expedite improvements at the border,” said Mr. Ken Schoetz, chairman of the board of the Buffalo and Fort Erie Public Bridge Authority. “As an operator that sees border congestion every day, we appreciate the

Government of Canada’s understanding of the importance of this international crossing.” This project included the construction of a fifth primary inspection lane and booth for Canada-bound commercial vehicles, and a designated Vehicle and Cargo Inspection System (VACIS) area. Canada’s Economic Action Plan contributed $1 million, through the Gateways and Border Crossings Fund, representing 50 per cent of the total eligible costs. The Buffalo and Fort Erie Public Bridge Authority contributed the remaining $1 million. The Government of Canada is taking important steps to support economic growth. Canada’s Economic Action Plan provides for almost $12 billion in new infrastructure stimulus funding over two years.

Canada’s best-paid 100 CEOs breezed through the worst of the recession with earnings 155 times higher than the average Canadian income earner, says a new study by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA). The study, Recession-Proof, looks at 2009 compensation levels for Canada’s best paid 100 CEOs and finds they pocketed an average of $6.6 million during the darkest period of the recession - a stark contrast from the total average Canadian income of $42,988. The study shows executive compensation in Canada wasn’t always this rich. In 1998, the best paid 100 CEOs pocketed an average of 104 times more than the average Canadian wage earner, compared to 155 times more in 2009. “Even that extraordinary number understates the real story,” says Mackenzie. “Thanks to a change in corporate reporting introduced in 2008, we only have a conservative statistical estimate of the stock options that make up about one third of CEOs’ 2009 pay. The pub-

lic will never know how much most of these CEOs actually got paid in 2009. “And that’s only half the story. These CEOs are sitting on $1.3 billion of stock options they haven’t yet cashed in. That’s about $2 in future income for every $1 they declared in 2009.” When the CEOs decide to exercise those stock options, the study reveals Canadians will subsidize that bonus with an estimated average of $360 million in foregone taxes, since stock options are taxed at a lower rate, as if they are capital gains. Among Mackenzie’s recommendations: getting rid of that expensive and unfair loophole. The study highlights the role that soaring executive compensation plays in the dramatic growth in income inequality in Canada identified in a recent CCPA study by Senior Economist Armine Yalnizyan. Yalnizyan found that fully one third of all income growth in Canada in the past 20 years went to the richest 1% of Canadians.

Canada’s winter survival guide

(NC)—As the first snowflakes fall to the ground, Canadians everywhere are bundling-up for a full season of snow sports and hot cocoa consumption. The wintertime can be the best time for family fun – whether you’re building a snowman in the yard or slicing up the slopes, winter activities are a great chance to spend quality time together. Though the winter weather gets Canadians back out to the great outdoors, our harsh climate means we take extra care to ensure the whole family is safe, happy, and warm all season long. With this survival guide in hand, get bundled up and out into the snow with ease. Winter survival guide: The Do’s and Don’ts DO: Hit the slopes and enjoy winter sports like skiing and snowboarding. DON’T: Forget to drink lots of water and eat a well-balanced diet – especially when active. Stay healthy and resist the urge to live off comfort foods alone throughout the winter. DO: Cozy-up by the fire in your favourite winter wools. DON’T: Sacrifice stylish wool sweaters because you find them rough or scratchy. Try washing your woolens with Ultra Downy Free & Sensitive – a dye and perfume free liquid fabric soft-

ener that will soften those rough winter shirts and sweaters (just but be sure to read clothing labels before washing). DO: Slip and slide away. What’s winter without a day of tobogganing? DON’T: Forget that safety comes first. Make sure children wear helmets and always stay off to the side when climbing up the hill for the next ride. Remember: stay alert and stay safe. DO: Keep bundled and cozy with lots of layers and warm fabrics. DON’T: Let winter weather nip your nose because you left your scarf in the laundry bin. For a great clean that’s gentle on skin, wash your winter accessories with Tide Free & Gentle, a dye and perfume free liquid detergent that is specially designed for sensitive skin. DO: Get creative. Try new pursuits like a snowy scavenger hunt to shake-up the routine of skating and skiing. DON’T: Leave anyone out. Get the whole family equally involved in winter activities. From planning your day to the rewarding cup of hot chocolate at the end of it all, everyone can play a part in your fun-filled winter day. More information on how to keep your winter gear clean and soft all season long can be found online at www. tide.ca.

Canada Post receives fully-electric delivery vehicle Canada Post recently became the recipient of the first Transit Connect Electric commercial delivery vehicle in Canada. The all-electric commercial van, built on the Ford Transit Connect vehicle body and equipped with Azure Dynamics’ patented Force DriveTM battery electric powertrain is the first of ten zero-emission pure battery-powered vehicles the corporation has committed to purchasing. The remaining nine Ford Transit Connect electric vans will begin delivering mail in 2011. “It is important for companies such as Canada Post to show leadership and explore ways to reduce their overall carbon footprint,” said the Honourable Rob Merrifield, Minister of State (Transport). “Canadians should be pleased that their postal service will deliver mail in a more environmentally friendly manner.” “We have the largest delivery fleet in the country and we are committed to improving our environmental record,” said Doug Jones, senior vice-president, Operations, at Canada Post. “Developing partnerships with companies like Ford and Azure allows us to implement new technologies that meet our delivery needs.” Canada Post has tested a number of vehicle technologies over the years with the aim of advancing technology and securing vehicles that are more fuelefficient and environmentally friendly. The corporation began working with Azure Dynamics back in 1998 to begin to develop technology that would reduce CO2 emissions and improve fuel efficiency for its fleet. The Ford Transit Connect Electric reduces gasoline fuel costs to zero, produces no tailpipe emissions and is virtually silent. These vehicles will be equipped with the Azure Dynamics pure battery-electric power train. The Ford Transit Connect Electric utilizes an advanced lithium-ion battery from Johnson Controls-Saft to achieve a range of up to 130 Kilometres (80 miles) on a single charge and zero tailpipe emissions.

The Honourable Rob Merrifield, Minister of State (Transport) and John Farnand, Vice President, Postal Transformation at Canada receive the key to the first Ford Transit Connect Electric in Canada from Jim Rideout, National Account Manager, Fleet Sales at Ford Canada.

Majority of Canadians Expect to Work After Retirement : Scotiabank Study More than one-third of Canadians plan to work after they retire out of financial necessity Half of Canadians believe they will need to save less than a million dollars for retirement

Of those Canadians who plan to retire, more than two-thirds (69 per cent) plan to work during retirement, primarily to remain mentally (72 per cent) and socially (57 per cent) active, according to a recent Scotiabank study conducted by Harris/Decima assessing Canadians’ attitudes toward retirement and investing. However, more than a third of Canadians (38 per cent) expect to work after they officially retire out of financial necessity. “Being mentally and socially active is important at any age, and we are happy to see that these are the main reasons Canadians continue to work after they retire,” said Gillian Riley, Senior Vice-President & Head, Retail Payments, Deposits and Lending, Scotiabank. “For the number of Canadians who feel they will not be financially prepared to retire, at Scotiabank we understand that planning for retirement can often be overwhelming and we want to help Canadians invest for their future so they can achieve their ideal retirement.” The study found that 56 per cent of Canadians think they will need less than one million dollars to

fund their retirement, half of whom believe they will need less than $300,000. More than one-quarter of Canadians (28 per cent) think they will need between one and two million dollars and 16 per cent believe they will need two million dollars or more to fund their ideal retirement. “While there’s no magic number that Canadians should be aiming for when saving for retirement, it’s important that Canadians are realistic about how they plan to spend their retirement and how much it will cost,” said Ms. Riley. “Whether it be $250,000 or $1,000,000, it can be daunting to think about needing such a large sum of money, so it is equally important for Canadians to consider how much they can afford to put away for retirement and understand what that amount will mean for them down the road.” When it comes to how they plan to spend their retirement, the majority of Canadians plan to travel (86 per cent), spend time with family and friends (72 per cent), read (61 per cent) and exercise (60 per cent). Other retirement plans include taking up a hobby (50 per cent) and going back to school (24 per cent).

As for saving for retirement, three-quarters (78 per cent) of those expecting to retire are currently putting money away for their future and they have been doing so for an average of 15 years. Half of Canadians (55 per cent) who plan to retire report saving less than $20,000 over the past five years. “We all know that it’s important to invest for our future, but with so many demands on our time and money it can be easy to put off saving for a goal that often seems far away,” commented Ms. Riley. “At Scotiabank, we work with our customers to help make their long-term goals more tangible so they can take action and let the saving begin.” While the bulk of money for retirement will come from RRSP contributions and savings (78 per cent and 68 per cent respectively), many Canadians indicated their retirement would also be funded by money from the government (63 per cent), their work pension (55 per cent) or inheritance (27 per cent). A small number of Canadians expect to have retirement money come from the lottery (five per cent) or their kids (four per cent).

Despite continued volatility in the fourth quarter, the Canadian market for initial public offerings topped $5 billion in 2010, a significant increase from less than $2 billion in 2009, the annual PwC survey of IPO activity on Canadian exchanges has shown. A total of $1.2 billion from 31 new issues on all exchanges in the fourth quarter helped push the total for 2010 to $5.5 billion for the first time since 2006, the PwC survey reported. Ten new issues on the TSX gathered $1.1 billion in new equity during the final quarter of 2010 vs just one new issue at $300 million in the same period of 2009. The TSX Venture exchange accounted for 17 IPOs during the quarter totaling $139 million, up from 12 issues worth $51 million in the final three months of last year. The long climb back from the decade low of $682 million in new issues on all exchanges in 2008 has given the Canadian IPO market some momentum going into 2011, says Neil Manji, PwC national IPO services leader, and a reason for continued optimism.

Mining and the energy sector drove activity in 2010, something Manji sees carrying into 2011. But, he says, other fundamentals are also pointing to positive market conditions. Companies from outside of Canada are looking at new issues on Canadian exchanges, a recognition of the stability of the Canadian economy and the maturity of our equity markets, Manji adds. “We still have volatility, which hurts the IPO market,” Manji cautions, “and many of the elements that shaped 2010 may influence 2011. Concerns in Europe will continue to play on markets and a lack of issues in the $200 million to $300 million range is still the missing pillar of traditional Canadian IPO market strength.” There were 25 issues on the TSX in all of 2010 with a combined value of $5.2 billion, up from just four IPOs worth $1.7 billion on the senior exchange in 2009, the survey revealed. The TSX Venture exchange accounted for 42 IPOs representing $347 million in new equity in 2010 compared to 20 IPOs for $69 million in the previous year.

The largest issue of 2010 was the $1.3 billion IPO of Athabasca Oil Sands Corp. in the second quarter. MEG Energy Corp. ($700 million) and SMART Technologies Inc. ($660 million) rounded out the list of the largest issues of 2010. The $300 million offering by Whistler Blackcomb Holdings Inc. was the largest new issue of the fourth quarter. The Oil & Gas sector represented $2.7 billion in new equity in 2010, nearly half of the total funds raised on all exchanges during the year. Mining accounted for approximately $1 billion while $645 million was raised in new real estate equity. PwC has conducted its survey of the IPO market in Canada for more than 10 years. The reports are issued on a quarterly basis to provide information to the corporate sector, investors, the media and others that will help them put the market into better perspective. For the purposes of the survey, investment vehicles such as structured products are not considered IPOs because they do not represent new equity raised for operating companies.

Ontario’s seatbelt law celebrated its 35th birthday on January 1, 2010. Today, 92.8 per cent of all Ontarians buckle up that’s up from just 17.2 per cent who wore seatbelts before the mandatory law took effect. Ontario was the first province to require all drivers and passengers to wear a seatbelt. The McGuinty government has since expanded the law to include: • Increased fines for seatbelt, child seat, and booster seat violations • A requirement that every vehicle occupant be buckled up - one person, one seatbelt • The mandatory use of appropriate booster and child car seats at all times, whether children are driving with a parent, grand parent or other caregiver.

Hiring NOW in Brampton

Since Ontario’s seatbelt law first came into effect in 1976, the number of people killed and injured in motor vehicle collisions has steadily dropped and it is estimated that seatbelt use has saved over 8,000 lives. “The evidence is clear - buckling up could save your life and the lives of your loved ones,â€? said Hon’ Kathleen Wynne, Transportation Minister. QUICK FACTS • A driver who is not wearing a seatbelt is more than 40 times more likely to be killed in a crash than one who is properly buckled. • The fine for seatbelt, child seat, and booster seat violations is $240 and two demerit points.

REALTY / FINANCE 10 January 05 - 18, 2011 Canadians personal D.E.B.T. hits record high (NC)—Brother, can you spare $41,000? Canadian household debt reached a record $1.4-trillion in 2010. That means more than $41,000 is owed by every man, woman and child living in the country, reports the Certified General Accountants Association of Canada. Here are some easy-to-remember tips to help you recover from debt: D = Deal with the debt Take ownership of your circumstances and begin re-establishing your financial position. “The first step to overcoming any problem is acknowledging it,” said Stephen Reichenfeld, vice president and wealth counsellor, Fiduciary Trust Company of Canada. “Meet with a financial professional to discuss your situation, prioritize your finances and create your short- and longterm goals.” E = Ensure you have a plan With the help of a financial planner, develop a solid budget. Review your plan regularly to stay on track and ensure your goals are met. B = Beat the cycle Avoid additional debt by removing temptation: cut up credit cards and trim back on unnecessary purchases. For example, rent a movie instead of going to the theatre. T = Take action Start a savings routine that is right for you, whether it’s a tax-free savings account or a retirement savings plan. (NC)—Credit cards can be a convenient and safe way to pay for purchases and services. But, they can encourage buy now, pay later spending habits that may lead to financial trouble. Carrying a balance on a credit card increases the cost of everything you purchase with the card, due to the amount of interest you pay. You could also build up debt that might take you years to pay off, or damage your credit rating. However, if you pay off your balance every month, you can save those interest charges. Here are a few tips from the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) that can help you make the most of your credit card this season: • Pay off your balance every month so you won’t pay any interest charges on your credit card purchases. • If you do carry a balance, pay back as much as you can as quickly as possible. You don’t have to wait until the payment due date. The FCAC Credit Card Payment Calculator tool shows you how much you

save when you pay more than the minimum monthly payment. • Avoid using your credit card to withdraw cash or transfer money. Interest is charged on these transactions immediately. • If you are considering a card with an annual fee, be sure that whatever reward or benefit you’re getting is worth the cost. The recently updated FCAC Credit Card SelectorTool has details on approximately 250 credit cards available in Canada, including more than 70 that charge no annual fee, as well as premium and specialized cards. • Stay within your budget when you use your card so you don’t buy things you can’t afford. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada’s tip sheet, Be Smart with Your Credit Card, lists more ways to use your card wisely. Harper Government to strengthen and enlarge health warnings on cigarette packages

The Harper Government has announced it intends to launch updated, larger health warning messages and a toll-free quitline on cigarette and little cigar packages that will be the backbone of a social marketing campaign to encourage smokers to quit. The announcement was made by the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health and Pierre Poilievre, Member of Parliament for Nepean-Carleton. “The combination of larger health warning messages and social marketing will help the new messages reach as many smokers as possible,” said Minister Aglukkaq. “This comprehensive strategy will ensure Canada remains a world leader in tobacco control initiatives.” At a news conference, Minister Aglukkaq unveiled four of the initial new, stronger messages and committed to a rotation of messages so that they

them more noticeable, while new toxic emission statements will be easier to understand. In addition to the labelling changes, Health Canada is developing a social marketing campaign targeting smokers, including young adults. Multimedia, including social networks across the Web, will be used to reach teenagers and young adults. The new health warning messages will build on the success of the Cracking Down on Tobacco Marketing Aimed At Youth Act. The Act, which became law in October 2009, makes it harder for industry to entice young people to smoke. The messages will also complement new and existing cessation and prevention initiatives, resulting in a comprehensive and integrated approach to tobacco control. Tobacco use costs the Canadian health care systems $4.4 billion a year in direct costs and continues

avoid losing effectiveness over time. Key features of the new label requirements include: New, larger graphic health warnings that will feature new diseases and, for the first time, testimonials from individuals affected by tobacco use. The warnings will cover 75% of the front and back of cigarette and little cigar packages, up from the current 50%. A pan-Canadian quitline and web URL. Provisional on provincial and territorial agreement, Health Canada intends to include on packages a panCanadian quitline number and web URL that would seamlessly connect smokers to provincial and territorial phone cessation support services. Improved health information messages and toxic emission statements. The addition of colour and graphics to health information messages will make

www.roadtoday.com 13 January 05 - 18, 2011 2011 Chevrolet Cruze Achieves 5-Star Overall Safety Score All-new model excels under more rigorous government testing system E

The 2011 Chevrolet Cruze has earned five-star crash test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), further building on the vehicle’s safety record in markets around the world. The Cruze was tested under NHTSA’s revised New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) implemented this fall for the 2011 model year. The rating is based on more rigorous frontal and side crash tests in addition to rollover resistance testing. Under the new system, the three test conditions are combined mathematically into an “Overall Vehicle Score.” The Cruze is the first vehicle tested under the new rating system to achieve five stars in each of the individual crash impact conditions, leading to an overall vehicle score of five stars – the highest rating possible. “Cruze has achieved five-star crash safety scores everywhere it is rated in the world. This is the direct result of our global engineering team’s focused effort,” said Jeff Boyer, General Motors’ executive director of vehicle safety. “These safety ratings reflect the confidence we have in Cruze’s state-of-the-art safety technologies and overall crashworthiness.” The 2011 Cruze offers more standard safety features than any vehicle in its class and represents Chevrolet’s commitment to continuous safety – before, during and after a crash. Standard features include StabiliTrak electronic stability control, Panic Brake Assist and Enhanced Smart Pedal / Brake Override.

The Cruze is the first car in its class with 10 standard air bags, including front knee air bags – a segment first. OnStar’s safety and security package is standard. “Cruze is winning over c ons u m e r s with its design, amenities, fuel economy and strong value for the money,” said Chris Perry, vice president of Chevrolet Marketing. “The five-star overall vehicle safety score provides another great reason for small car buyers to consider Cruze.”

Ontario Gov’t Helping Families With Energy Costs, Increasing Consumer Protections The Ontario government is helping families by providing 10 per cent off their electricity bills with the new Ontario Clean Energy Benefit. Strong new rules and safeguards will also protect Ontarians from unfair practices by energy retailers. Ontario’s Long-Term Energy Plan is moving the province to clean sources of power while shutting down coal plants that pollute the air we breathe. Upgrading and modernizing Ontario’s energy infrastructure is helping to provide reliable power to homes and businesses and is creating thousands of jobs for Ontarians in the growing clean energy sector. To make this transition a bit easier for families, the Ontario government is providing 10 per cent off electricity bills for the next five years. Starting this month, households, farms and small businesses will automatically receive the Ontario Clean Energy Benefit. Also starting January 1, all energy retailers are required to follow strong new rules under the Energy Consumer Protection Act. This includes offering a comparison of a contract price to the price offered by the local utility company. The new rules will ensure consumers receive accurate information from energy retailers before signing a contract, and will limit consumer penalties and fees when a contract is cancelled. Helping Ontario families and businesses, while building a clean energy economy and creating jobs is an important part of the McGuinty government’s Open Ontario Plan to attract investment and provide cleaner air for our children and grandchildren. QUICK FACTS • An average household can expect to save approximately $150 each year through the Ontario Clean Energy Benefit. • The expanded Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit is putting up to $900 per year back into the pockets of low- to middle-income families and up to $1,025 for seniors, for a total of $1.2 billion over three years. • The Northern Ontario Energy Credit is providing up to $200 per family and up to $130 for single people to help with home energy costs. The more than half of all Northerners who qualify must apply by June 30, 2011 to receive the 2010 credit.

Five fast and easy cyber tips help make online information secure

New Year’s resolutions don’t have to be hard. If you want to be more secure and safe online in 2011, the Trend Micro crew in Ottawa offers some quick and easy ways to make your New Year’s resolutions a reality. These insider tips will save you time and money, and go a long way to prevent your online information from being compromised. “These tips won’t prepare you for a marathon, but if you resolve to take a few minutes to update, backup and clean up your PC or MAC files, you’ll sprint to a safe and secure online start to the New Year,” says Trend Micro’s Ian Gordon, Director of Marketing. 1. New Year. New Passwords. The easiest change you can make this year - increase the strength of your passwords, write them down and put them in a safe place (not beside your computer). For the strongest passwords, don’t use words at all. Use random letters, numbers and special characters to make a pattern on your keyboard. For example: qWe4%6yUi is much stronger than the name of your first pet. 2. Dude! Back up those files. The New Year is the right time to get in the habit of backing up your files regularly before a hard drive failure, theft or physical disaster provides a gut-wrenching reminder to do so. 3. Update your operating system, Web browser and media applications. Updates are among the best defenses against attack, so take a few minutes to patch those holes before hackers find them. 4. Start 2011 Clutter free. Do yourself and your computer a favor and perform a New Year’s cleaning. Your desk or laptop may be slowing down under the burden of all that clutter. Take a few minutes to uninstall unused programs, delete unneeded temp files, get rid of old email attachments and defragment your drive. 5. Install the latest security software suite and keep it updated. Today’s security software is more effective and easier to use, and it offers exhaustive protections against cybercriminals, viruses and everything in between. There are free trials available so you can be protected without breaking the bank.

Four ways to keep kids happy all winter long

(NC)—For many children, the winter is the best time of year. Skiing, skating, snow fort building – it’s a wonderland. But for others, it’s not much fun at all. Cold and dark, winter leaves some feeling grumpy and bored indoors. Here’s how you can help your kids enjoy the season when they’ve got a case of the winter blahs. 1. Get outside. Your children may not choose to head outdoors when it’s cold, so it’s up to you to encourage them. Dress them warmly and yourself as well. Your kids will enjoy themselves even more when they see you playing in the snow, too. 2. Get moving inside. If it’s too cold outside, try physically active indoor-friendly games that the whole family can play, like a game of charades or balloon volleyball. At My Best, a national schoolbased wellness program developed by AstraZeneca Canada and Physical and Health Education Canada, suggests dancing the blahs away. Visit the “Music room” at www.atmybest.ca for links to get-moving songs that your kids will love. 3. Grow an indoor herb garden. Your children will get a kick out of tending their own basil, oregano and chives. Perfect for adding loads of fresh flavour to healthy meals, the garden will also give your kids that glorious green that they may be missing. 4. Talk about it. If your children are feeling down about the cold weather and you can relate, tell them. Your kids will feel close to you for sharing your childhood emotions and they’ll be more likely to take your suggestions for overcoming their winter blahs.

“If You Bought It, a Truck Brought It” is a simple but powerful reminder that the trucking industry has a massive presence in North America, keeping trade and commerce moving by providing flexible and economical transportation options. But who keeps the estimated 16 million trucks rolling? That’s the task of truck and coach technicians, one of the career training fields that Toronto’s Centennial College specializes in. At its sprawling Ashtonbee Campus, students work on big rigs and buses, studying the technology behind gasoline and diesel engines, electrical systems, suspensions, air brakes, gear trains and, increasingly, the electronic components that manage many of the mechanical systems. The learning is hands-on in professional lab workshops filled with the latest vehicles and diagnostic equipment used by the industry itself. Centennial College is the largest transportation-technology training centre in Canada, which means students can choose between a number of options in terms of how they can earn their truck and coach technician credentials. The most common route is traditional apprenticeship, which requires you to find an employer who will sign a contract to ensure you will be employed throughout the training period, which can take as long

as five years. Once you’re registered as an apprentice and learning in the workplace, you can attend three college training sessions of eight weeks duration, or come to college one day a week over three years, to earn your eligibility to write the provincial Certificate of Qualification exam. The second option is modified apprenticeship, a popular option at Centennial given its many partnerships with major manufacturers. Students can choose between Freightliner, Volvo/Mack and the Automotive Transportation Service Superintendents Association (ATS) as a sponsoring partner, but again, the first step is to secure employment with a manufacturer’s dealer or fleet. The learning takes place in Centennial’s excellent labs using proprietary technology and vehicles. The third route is unique to Centennial: Co-op apprenticeship. This two-year program gives students a college diploma, eight months of on-the-job training in a workplace, and the required in-school apprenticeship curriculum. Graduates get an excellent head start on their apprenticeship, which they can complete with an employer. All the technician training options are under one roof at Centennial College. To get your questions answered and arrange a tour of the training facilities, email: sot@centennialcollege.ca.

(NC)—Having a great business idea is only the first step. Finding money to make that idea a reality can be a bigger challenge. Looking for funding sources for a business can be daunting. There are the obvious first places to look (dipping into savings, traditional bank loans or borrowing from family and friends) but government programs can also prove to be useful. A good starting point is Canada Business Ontario (CBO), a joint service from the Governments of Canada and Ontario. They can provide business planning

resources (including sample plans and customized market research) and help identify what funding programs could apply to a business in Ontario. This free service helps locate funding programs for a specific industry, demographic group (such as youths, aboriginals or new Canadians), and describe subsides to help a business hire employees. They can also provide resources to help you locate private sector financing. So, what support is out there? Canada Business Ontario’s trained information officers will determine what programs are applicable to a specific business situation. The Canada Small Business Financing Program, for instance, can help a new or existing small business secure a bank loan of up to $500,000 to purchase assets like new equipment or software. While loans make up most of the available support for business, grants and subsidies are also available for those that meet specific criteria. The Community Futures Program can provide up to $250,000 to start or grow a business in Northern Ontario or a rural area of Southern Ontario. Career Focus, a wage subsidy program, will pay part of the salary of a college or university graduate that is hired through this program. To access Canada Business Ontario’s services, visit www.canadabusiness.ca or call the Business Info Line at 1-888-745-8888.

Gaining SmartWay Traction: Continental Introduces HDR1 Eco Plus

• One of few open shoulder drive tires to be included on the SmartWay verified technologies list • HDR1 Eco Plus balances regional tire durability with fuel efficiency • Compounding advancements result in 19 percent improved rolling resistance Leading the SmartWay challenge, the Commercial Tire Division of Continental Tire the Americas has introduced one of the few open shoulder drive tires to be verified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for low rolling resistance – the HDR1 Eco Plus. The HDR1 Eco Plus (Heavy Drive Regional) will rapidly become the drive tire of choice for local pickup and delivery fleets that require a true open shoulder design for optimal traction, yet need the on-highway fuel efficiency of a low rolling resistance truck tire, predicted Clif Armstrong, CTA’s director of marketing for commercial vehicle tires. Designed and produced at Continental’s award-winning plant and research center in Mt. Vernon, Ill., the HDR1 Eco Plus keeps the same open shoulder design and reduced stone retention that fleets came to rely on from the original HDR1 model, introduced in 2009. Continental’s truck tire engineers also included an innovative lug angle that resists irregular wear over the extended lifetime of the tire; a high endurance tread design with grooves that reduce stone retention; and advanced fuel-efficient tread compounding. The compounding advancements allowed the HDR1 Eco Plus to become verified for low rolling resistance by the U.S. EPA SmartWay Transport Partnership, joining an elite list of tires that can help reduce emissions and fuel consumption for line-haul,

class 8 trucks. But while many manufacturers are offering SmartWay-verified drive tires with a partially open shoulder – with tie bars between the grooves – the HDR1 Eco Plus remains a true open shoulder for the tire’s entire lifetime, explained Roger Stansbie, Continental’s director of commercial vehicle tire technology for the Americas. This ensures that the truck operator has the security of traction in inclement weather that is typically not found in closed shoulder designs, Stansbie said. The fuel-saving capabilities of the HDR1 Eco Plus are particularly exciting for regional fleets that have been following the proposals of the U.S. EPA and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Regulations proposed in late October aim to further regulate greenhouse gas and fuel economy standards for vehicles ranging from heavy-duty pickups to commercial trucks, starting in 2014 and 2018. Since regional fleets may be affected by these regulations, they’ve been awaiting a low rolling resistance drive tire to meet their needs, Armstrong explained. The HDR1 Eco Plus is now available through Continental dealers in the U.S., Canada and Mexico in load ranges G and H, size 275/80R22.5. For specifications on this product and the complete lineup of Continental truck tires, visit www.continental-truck. com.

How to make the most of mail-in rebate

(NC) —January is a great time to cash in on post-holiday sales, but be aware that not all discounts are given at the cash register. Sometimes you have to mail in coupons after the fact in order to get money off your purchase. The Canadian Consumer Handbook at www.consumerhandbook. ca offers these tips on how to get the most from mail-in rebates: • Do your homework. Rebates are a type of promotion offered by a retailer or manufacturer that involves a partial refund or discount in the form of cash or a cheque. • Be careful. Some promotions that claim to offer rebates are actually gift cards or credits that can only be used at that vendor for future purchases. Read the fine print. • Identify the timelines. Some rebates will be given to you at the time of purchase, while others, such as mail-in rebates, will be sent to you at a later date if you apply for them.

• Ask questions. Ask if taxes will be calculated on the full amount of the purchase or on the after-rebate price. Ask when the rebate offer expires and make sure you apply by the deadline. • Always read the terms and conditions. Issues like required documentation, eligibility and limits per household may affect whether you can apply. • Establish a paper trail. Keep your receipts and all documentation associated with the rebate. That way if something goes wrong you can build a stronger case. • Lodge a complaint if you feel you’ve been misled. The Office of Consumer Affairs’ Complaint Courier (www.complaintcourier. ca) can help you draft a complaint while the Competition Bureau (www.competitionbureau.gc.ca) can provide you with additional information on rebates.

$96 Billion Spent on Infrastructure in Canada

Canadian infrastructure spending is alive and well, with $96,096,400,000 being spent in 20 categories according to ReNew Canada - the country’s leading expert on infrastructure, which published its Top 100 Projects 2011 Report. “Infrastructure is a leading indicator of economic growth, and this country is doing well in terms of large-scale projects,” said Mira Shenker, Editor, ReNew Canada. “For 4 years, the Top 100 has been a barometre for spending and this year, the projects total over $96 billion, up from $68 billion in 2010. While 46% of all buildings on the list are new builds, the rest are renewals and expansions, an indication that a fair amount is being done to address this country’s aging assets.” In this year’s Top 10, representing over a third of spending on the list, some $36 billion was spent, primarily on Transportation/Transit (5 projects) and

Hydroelectric/Renewable Energy (4 projects), with one hospital expansion. “This year, we saw an increase in the number of projects involving transit and transportation, with 34 commuter projects to highways and bridges - likely an indication that government is actively looking to fix existing infrastructure and come to terms with rapid expansion,” said Shenker. Two of the Top 10 projects are in Toronto - Eglinton Crosstown LRT Project ($4.6 billion) and the Spadina Subway Extension ($2.63 billion).Their presence on any future list may be under review given current discussions around Transit City’s status. The top ten projects are: • Romaine Complex A Renewable Energy Proj ect, Quebec $6.5 billion (# 1 in 2010 as well) • Lower Churchill Hydro Project, Central Lab rador $6.2 billion (NEW)

• Eastmain-1-A/Sarcelle/Rupert Project, Quebec $5 billion (# 2 in 2010) • Eglinton Crosstown, LRT, Ontario $4.6 billion (NEW) • Turcot Interchange, Quebec $3 billion (# 10 in 2010) • Spadina Subway Extension, Ontario $2.63 billion (# 3 in 2010) • Lower Mattagami Hydroelectric Complex, Ontario $2.6 billion (NEW) • CHUM (Centre hospitalier de l’université de Montréal) Redevelopment, Quebec $2.5 billion (NEW) • Port Mann/Highway 1 Project, British Columbia $2.46 billion • Ottawa LRT, Ontario $2.1 billion (NEW)

It’s the middle of winter: Have you checked your tires lately? (NC)—The snowy season may be in full swing, but we’ve still got a few months to go before the flowers start to bloom—and before driving conditions improve. In fact, the worst of old man winter usually strikes in the New Year. And, just because you’ve made it this far doesn’t mean that your tires will carry you through the rest of the winter. Winter tires improve traction on ice and snow and are essential to providing a smoother and safer ride for drivers and passengers. However, it’s important to make sure these tires are well-maintained and still doing their job - properly. “Tougher driving conditions mean more wear and tear on your tires, so it’s a good idea to check your winter tires midway through the season,” says Andrew Horsman, executive director at Ontario Tire Stewardship. “Your tires could be damaged and might even need replacing.” If new winter tires are indeed on your list of post-Christmas must-haves, don’t forget to properly dispose of your old set. Generally, winter tires need

to be replaced every two to three seasons, so without recycling, those old tires can pile up fast. With the used tires program implemented in Ontario, getting rid of worn down winter tires is easy. “Just drop them off at any registered Ontario Tire Stewardship collector,” says Horsman. “It’s free and your old tires can get a new life in the form of products like rubber mulch, playground equipment and patio tiles. By using Ontario’s tire recycling program, you help the environment and get a head start on spring cleaning.” More information on the used tires program can be found online at www.ontarioTS.org.

Canadian Cancer Society launches sixth annual Driven to Quit Challenge

Results of an Angus Reid Public Opinion survey1 conducted in December show that 20 per cent of Ontario adults are current tobacco users, including cigarettes, cigars and chew tobacco, and that half of them have tried unsuccessfully to quit in the past. This news comes as the Canadian Cancer Society launches the sixth annual Driven to Quit Challenge today together with the Ministry of Health Promotion and Sport. With hundreds of thousands currently trying to break free from their tobacco addiction in Ontario, The Driven to Quit Challenge encourages tobacco users to make a quit attempt for the month of March for their chance to win exciting prizes. Of those surveyed, one in five (18 per cent) who have tried to quit tobacco - with or without success attempted to quit more than five times. “Since 2006, The Driven to Quit Challenge has inspired more than 130,000 quit attempts,” said Martin Kabat, CEO, Canadian Cancer Society, Ontario Division. “With the 2011 Challenge and increased awareness it brings to cessation support, I’m confi-

dent that we’re helping Ontarians find the motivation and the help that they need to quit smoking and improve their health.” Those who stay smoke-free for the month of March are entered to win their choice of a new Honda hybrid, one of two $5,000 CAA vacation getaways and one of seven $2,000 MasterCard gift cards. Each entrant registers with a support buddy, who can qualify to win a buddy prize of a $200 MasterCard gift card. “Our government is committed to helping Ontarians break the cycle of tobacco addiction. Every attempt to quit is a vital part of this process. That is why we support initiatives such as The Driven to Quit Challenge that encourage smokers to break the cycle of addiction to tobacco,” said Margarett Best, Minister of Health Promotion and Sport. To register and for details about The Driven to Quit Challenge, Ontarians can go to www.DrivenToQuit.ca or call the Canadian Cancer Society Smokers’ Helpline at 1 877 513-5333. Registration is open

until February 28, 2011. Early birds who register in January can also qualify to win a $1,000 MasterCard gift card. Survey highlights: • 52 per cent of Ontario adults have used tobacco products (55 per cent of men and 50 per cent of women) • Six per cent of Ontario adults are currently trying to quit tobacco use • Ontario adults who have tried to quit or successfully quit tobacco average 3.2 attempts to quit tobacco. • Women make more attempts to quit than men, with 36 per cent making more than three attempts, compared to 30 per cent of men • 53 per cent of Ontarians would not date a tobacco user The Driven to Quit Challenge was officially launched on January 4th at Yonge Dundas Square in Toronto, Ontario. A street team blanketed the busy intersection, which featured a 15’ tall inflatable cigarette.

OPP WRAPS UP SUCCESSFUL FESTIVE R.I.D.E. CAMPAIGN

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers were highly visible this holiday season as they checked over 1,099,021 vehicles on OPP patrolled roadways during this year’s Festive R.I.D.E. (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) initiative. This year’s initiative was conducted from November 26 through to January 2, 2011 and OPP officers were busier than ever tracking down impaired drivers 7 days a week / 24 hours a day, right across the province. The OPP charged 294 people with impaired driving, over .08 BAC or for refusal to comply with a demand to provide a breath sample. An additional 5,011 charges were for other Criminal Code, Highway Traffic Act, or Liquor Licence Act offences. During the campaign, officers issued 256 administrative driver’s licence suspensions (ADLS) for

criminal code related drinking and driving offences. They also issued 605 ADL suspensions for a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) in the “warn range”. In comparison, during the 2009 Festive R.I.D.E. initiative, officers checked 1,199,280 vehicles, resulting in 299 persons being charged with criminal code alcohol-related offences. The OPP also laid a total of 5,195 charges for other Criminal Code, highway Traffic Act or Liquor Licence Act offences. Additionally, 746 warn range suspensions were issued during last year’s campaign. “Our high visibility during the 2010 Festive R.I.D.E. campaign demonstrates how relentless we are in our efforts to keep impaired drivers from taking innocent lives and causing serious injuries on our roads,” said OPP Commissioner Chris Lewis. “I am extremely proud of our members who worked around

the clock to keep Ontarians safe as they travelled our roads and arrived at their destinations to enjoy the holiday season,” added Lewis. Impaired driving continues to be a major factor in deaths on Ontario’s roads. Preliminary statistics indicate that during 2010, a total of 330 persons lost their lives on roads patrolled by the OPP. Of those, 68 deaths were alcohol-related, an increase of 17 alcohol-related deaths from 2009. “While this year’s Festive R.I.D.E. program is over, driving impaired continues to be an issue. The OPP is committed to reducing the tragic loss of life on our roads and will be conducting regular R.I.D.E. programs all year long to reinforce this important message,” said OPP Deputy Commissioner Larry Beechey, Provincial Commander, Traffic Safety & Operational Support.

Oprah Launches the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) Well, that retirement didn’t last very long, did it? Recently, Oprah officially retired from her weekday television program after 25 seasons and nearly 5000 episodes. She spent most of her 25 years on top of the television heap, having the most highly-rated talk show in American history. Still, that wasn’t enough, and behind the scene she went to work on a new venture offering 24 hours of day of Oprah and Oprah-approved television programming. Now, it has arrived. On New Year’s Day 2011, Oprah officially launched the Oprah Winfrey Network, or OWN. Oprah’s OWN is going to produce a staggering 600 hours of original programming for its first year, including star-studded shows hosted by former Princess of York Sarah Ferguson and country superstar Shania Twain. OWN will be on the air 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Discovery Network, who co-owns the network with Oprah’s Harpo Productions, is sinking a staggering $189 million dollars into the venture, which will reach 80 million homes at first. Oprah was previously a cofounder of the network Oxygen; OWN is replacing Discovery Health in Discovery’s channel lineup.
