Brampton Driver Ravinder Athwal Named to 2011-2012 OTA Road Knights Team
Ravinder Athwal, professional truck driver with Trimac Transportation has been named to the prestigious 2011-2012 Ontario Trucking Association (OTA) Road Knights Team. Athwal’s impeccable driving record, commitment to safety and desire to share his trucking expertise earned him a spot on the Team, which serves as ambassadors of the Ontario trucking industry. “I am proud to have been selected as an OTA Road Knight,”
said Athwal. I am eager to share my safety knowledge of the industry, as well as the numerous career opportunities the trucking industry offers. Athwal has been a professional driver for nine years and driven over one hundred thousand collision free kilometers. A native of India, Athwal now resides in Brampton with his wife, Harpreet, and their two children. When he isn’t behind the wheel of his truck, Athwal enjoys playing cricket and swimming. The Road Knights are a group of six men and one woman who are committed to enhancing safety on our roadways. Their mission is to raise awareness about how all road users can safely share the road with transport trucks and about the trucking industry. They also share information on the many careers the trucking industry has to offer at schools and

career fairs. “The members of the OTA Road Knights team are exemplary professionals in their field who want to share their passion for safety and their knowledge of the trucking industry,” said Road Knights manager, Deanna Pagnan. “Being named to this team is a great honour.” During their two year term, the Road Knights will present important road sharing tips to motorists, raise awareness of the vital role trucking plays in the economy, discuss careers in the trucking industry with young people and represent the industry at community events, business club meetings, driver education classes, schools and in the media. This is the 9th team that OTA has assembled since the program launched in 1995. This year’s team is generously sponsored by the OTA Allied Trades Division.

Protect your vehicle from the inside out (NC)—It’s no surprise that consumers are keeping their automobiles for longer periods than before, but according to a study performed by the survey gurus at R. L. Polk & Co., Canadians are keeping their cars on the road longer than ever before– 43% are still on the road today after 15 years, up from 28% in 2000. That’s why it’s important to protect the investment in your vehicle, which can mean the difference between trouble– free driving and costly repairs. Change your oil A regular oil change is the service most likely to help prolong the life of your vehicle. Changing the oil (not just topping it off ) using a high–quality motor oil that meets the specifications recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer helps your engine get the protection it needs. • Check the oil level regularly and change the oil at the intervals outlined in your owner’s manual. • Replace the oil filter with every oil change. Monitor your vehicle’s fluids Engine oil is not the only fluid your vehicle needs to run properly. Check your owner’s manual to find information about where fluids are contained, how to check them, the type your vehicle uses and how much should be in each “reservoir.” If you see drops of fluid under your vehicle, you should be able to identify them by color or consistency. A few
TransCore’s Canadian Freight Index Continues to Climb TransCore’s Canadian Freight Index sets another record for spot market freight volume with a month over month increase of 11 percent, despite the fact February is a short month. Load postings were up 36 percent year over year. February 2011 freight volume was more than double that of February 2009, during the economic downturn. February 2011 volumes also reached the highest levels for the month of February since TransCore began recording the Canadian freight data in 2001. This mirrors the findings on TransCore’s North American Freight Index that recorded the highest spot market truckload freight volume for the month of February since the company established the North American Freight Index in 1986. However, with loads reaching an all time high, equipment continued to decline. Capacity dropped to the lowest level since 2005. TransCore’s Loadlink freight matching database constitutes the largest Canadian network of carriers, owner operators, freight brokers and intermediaries and has been available to Canadian subscribers since its inception in 1990. Over 13 million full loads, ltl (less than truck load) shipments and trucks are posted to the Loadlink network annually.
small drops are probably not a cause for concern, but you should take note of small puddles: • If the fluid is green, pink, yellow or fluorescent orange, it could indicate a cooling system leak or an overheating problem. • If the fluid is dark brown or black, it is most likely engine oil. The engine could have a bad seal or gasket or a loose oil filter. • A red oily spot means you probably have a transmission or power steering fluid leak. • A small puddle of water is usually normal and is simply condensation from the air conditioning system or the defroster. Choose the right fuel Some of the world’s top automakers– Audi, BMW, GM, Honda, Toyota and Volkswagen– recognize that current minimum detergent re-
quirements do not go far enough to prevent engine “gunk,” deposits that can harm engine performance. To raise the bar on fuel quality, these auto manufacturers designated the voluntary Top Tier Detergent Gasoline Standard to help drivers avoid the problems that can be associated with using lower–quality gasolines. • Choose a Top Tier Detergent Gasoline to prevent engine “gunk,” deposits that can harm engine performance. • “If you look at gunk under a microscope,” explains Ken Mitchell, an Engineer from Shell Canada, “it has a porous surface that traps gasoline, negatively affecting the combustion in your engine over time. One of the easiest ways to prevent this is to choose a high–quality gasoline, like all three grades of Shell gasoline, which contain a Nitrogen Enriched
Cleaning system that helps clean and protect your engine from the build– up of gunk.” No matter how new or old the vehicle, keeping up with regular servicing and choosing the right fuel can help protect your engine and keep your wheels on the road longer.

(NC)—The life–cycle of a vehicle is long, complex, and inevitably involves the release of harmful smog–forming emissions into the atmosphere. The life of a vehicle on the road and the environmental impact it can have at the end of its life is especially pronounced when the vehicle is model year 1995 or older. On the road
Ve h i c l e s of model–year 1995 or older lack the latest technology for reducing air–polluting emissions. In fact, a 1995 or older vehicle produces up to 39 times more smog forming emissions than 2004 or newer vehicles.
After life If a car is not properly retired at the end of its life, it can have a negative impact on the environment. Failure to remove fluids, such as gas, oil and coolants, could result in the contamination of our air, water and soil. Additionally, when recyclers reuse components of the vehicles that are safe to re-
claim and do not contribute to the vehicle’s emissions, they reduce the need to manufacture new parts. Therefore, it is important for owners to ensure their vehicles are properly disposed of in the end. Until March 31, 2011, Ontarians who own 1995 model year and older vehicles can do just that and get rewarded for it by participating in Retire Your Ride, Canada’s national vehicle recycling program. The program has its own recycling Code of Practice that ensures that vehicles are responsibly recycled and hazardous materials such as fluids and vehicle parts are disposed of properly. To date, the program has responsibly recycled more than 120,000 vehicles from Canada’s roads, reducing thousands of tonnes of smog forming emissions. (NC)—If you want to get the most mileage out of a tank of gas, consider investing in low rolling resistance tires. Rolling resistance, is a measure of the force that it takes to move your tires forward on the
road. As you travel along, the weight of your vehicle “deforms” your tire tread where the rubber meets the road. The resulting deformity generates heat between the tire and the road, which is then wasted in the form of heat as the tire rotates. The only way for your engine to make up for the lost energy is through consuming fuel. The heavier your vehicle, the more energy it burns to compensate. Who knew? If new tires are on the horizon, consider low rolling resistance
tires; some tire manufacturers are now boasting a 20 per cent reduction in rolling resistance through high–efficiency tires that reduce fuel consumption by about 4%. The Rubber Association of Canada and Natural Resources Canada have teamed up to make this information available to Canadians through their websites (www.betiresmart.ca and www. vehicles.nrcan.gc.ca). The websites contain a lot of helpful tips and tricks to help consumers save money on fuel and reduce harmful emissions, including how to buy and maintain more eco–friendly tires.

Responsible recycling is as close as your own driveway
(NC)—Finding ways to divert harmful waste from our landfills is a constant concern for Canadians. Many times, we forget that recycling goes beyond
household items and in fact spills into our driveways with some of the largest polluters out there – our vehicles. While paper, metal cans, glass bottles and plastic are the most commonly recycled household items in Canada, vehicles can be recycled just as easily through Retire Your Ride, Canada’s national vehicle recycling program. Did you know? • 75 per cent of an average car’s content by weight can be recycled. • A mandatory National Code of Practice for auto recyclers participating in Retire Your Ride has been established to prevent hazardous materials contained in end–of–life vehicles from contaminating our water, soil, and air during and after the vehicle recycling process. • If your old car isn’t properly drained of its oil, gasoline and refrigerants, and if its mercury switches are not removed, these hazardous materials can end up contaminating our air, soil and
water. • There is enough mercury in one small switch to contaminate a 20–acre lake. Although mercury switches are no longer being installed in new vehicles, there are about nine tonnes of these switches still in vehicles on the road today. • Once the hazardous material is removed, the vehicle is crushed and sent to be shredded into fist– sized pieces for recovery. Any valuable metals are separated and re–used to make new cars and other consumer products... and the cycle starts again. • Retire Your Ride offers great incentives to Canadians who retire their 1995 and older model year vehicles. They include free transit passes, discounts on the purchase of a new bicycle or vehicle, $300 cash and more. • The program will run until March 31, 2011. To get started on retiring your old clunker, or to get more information on car recycling visit www.retireyourride.ca.
Spring Car Care: Is your ride ready? (NC)—After months of battling ice, snow, and slush, it’s likely that your vehicle is in desperate need of revitalization. Get your ride ready for spring with these top tips: Wash up: Spray salt and dirt out of wheel wells, underbody, and underneath bumpers. Touch up: Remove medium to light scratches without visiting the body shop
using 3M’s Scratch Removal System. Pick one up from Canadian Tire. No pressure: Be sure to check tire pressure, since this can affect wear and tear and maximize gas mileage. Remove winter tires if you have them. Keep it cool: It hasn’t been used in months, so check your vehicle’s air conditioning and cooling system. Well oiled machine: Change the oil
and check all fluids. Your engine works harder in cold weather, which depletes fluids easily. Seasonal maintenance on your vehicle will keep it running smoothly and looking good. Isn’t that what every driver wants? More information is available at www.3MCarCare.com.

Prevent your car from being a rusty eyesore (NC)—We’ve all seen that car or truck rolling down the highway. You know the hideous eyesore you can barely lay your eyes on with the rusty holes through the door panels, flaky, discoloured paint and brown–red stained bubbled streaks. This poor vehicle is the latest in a long line of aesthetic road casualties due to the unprotected spreading of rust. Rust is an unfortunate reality for all cars. But surprisingly, some people still take this problem for granted. After all, a spot of rust on the side can’t do much harm, right? Wrong. Not only is rust a visual disgrace that can ruin an otherwise attractive vehicle, it’s also a safety concern that can compromise the strength of your vehicle’s overall integrity, moving parts and wiring. All winter long your vehicle is exposed to corrosive sand, salt and moisture from the roads surface. It’s not just the undercarriage that’s affected either, wiring, bolts, screws, openings, dings and chips are all susceptible. Experts agree that both new and old cars are affected by rust. According to Freeman Young, president of Krown Rust Control, the natural state of metal is to return to iron oxide so the challenge for car owners is to inhibit this inherent process in the best way possible. “Moisture on metal, not salt, is the number one cause of corrosion,” Young explained. “Salt is the accelerant, but it is moisture that does the most damage. For this reason, the products you use must have the ability to remove moisture from the metal and not allow it back. Krown’s product development team recognized that the correct formula should be easily absorbed into existing rust so it can push out any moisture present. Its products are petroleum–based and fortified with rust inhibitors, but they contain no solvents, VOCs or toxins of any kind. The Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) agrees with this approach: “We would agree that an application of an oil–based rust protector should be applied every year for maximum protection against rust and corrosion,” said Paul Datzkiw, Consumer and technical services with CAA South Central Ontario. Datzkiw also advised that
consumers should avoid electronic devices which offer limited protection and products that are thick and heavy, such as tar–based applications, as “these tend to coat the existing corrosion, trap con-
densation and moisture underneath, which can actually accelerate oxidation.” In fact, he added that Krown Rust Control is the only rust control company recommended by CAA South Central Ontario. An annual application of a rust inhibitor helps protect your vehicle’s structural integrity, contributing to a safer, more reliable vehicle and significant savings on future maintenance and repair costs. Most importantly it can help keep your car looking good longer and looking less “rust chic”. More information on the benefits of rust control can be found at www.krown.com.

What do I do with my winter tires? (NC)—With the ice melting and the flowers blooming, it’s time to change your tires. Winter tires are crucial to safe driving on snowy and icy roads, but keeping them on during the warmer months of the year creates unnecessary wear and tear, making them less effective when winter rolls around again and also puts your safety at risk. But even after your three–season tires are aligned and in place, the question remains: What
do you do with those winter tires? The first step is to check to see if those tires will be useful next winter. Are the treads deeper than six millimetres? Is the rubber crack–free? Depending on your driving habits and how often you drive, winter tires should last for a few winters, but if you’re still in doubt, ask a professional at your dealership or local tire retailer. If the tires are still safe for next year’s snowstorms, your next move

is to ensure that they’re stored properly. Clean off any salt residue, dry them off and then store them in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. In other words, don’t turn them into backyard tire swings for the summer. However, the arrival of spring often calls for spring cleaning, and for some, that may mean disposing of winter tires that have reached the end of their life. If that’s the case, getting rid of them is easy – just drop up to four tires off at any collector registered with the Ontario Tire Stewardship’s Used Tires Program, an industry–funding program that allows Ontario residents to dispose of used tires free of charge and recycles them into roof tiles, playground surfaces, mouse pads and more. “Start the spring season off right. There’s no need to keep used tires around when you can recycle them for free,” says Andrew Horsman, Executive Director, Ontario Tire Stewardship. “The Used Tires Program in Ontario makes what was old new again. By dropping old tires off at a registered collector, you’re not only avoiding unnecessary clutter, you’re helping the environment by ensuring your tires are recycled safely and made into new and useful products. While you’re dropping them off why not looking at picking up a new soaker hose, welcome mat or patio tiles? All can be made from recycled tire rubber and are available at retailers across the province.” A list of registered collectors and more information about Ontario Tire Stewardship is available online at www.ontariots. ca.

Ontario Government Leading The Charge In Clean Transportation Ontario’s vision to have one out of 20 vehicles to be electrically powered by 2020 is moving forward. Eight charging stations are now up and running in Ontario in partnership with world leader Better Place. The company has also opened an electric car demonstration and education centre in Toronto to help get more electric cars running on our roads and highways. For every 10,000 electric vehicles on the road, it is estimated there will be 40,000 tonnes less of CO2 polluting the air annually, which is like taking 8,500 gasoline-fuelled cars off the road. The province is also offering incentives to encourage Ontarians to purchase plug-in cars. Rebates starting from $5,000 up to $8,500 are available to those who purchased plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles after July 1, 2010. And green licence plates are now available to drivers of such electric vehicles to use carpool lanes, even if there is only one person in the vehicle. Encouraging cleaner transportation options through new technology supports businesses such as Better Place and the Open Ontario plan to create jobs and strengthen the economy. • Plug-in electric vehicles reduce emissions of harmful and dirty air pollutants and lower greenhouse gases, which contribute to climate change. • The Better Place demonstration centre, located at Evergreen Brick Works in Toronto, features a life-size mock-up of a vehicle charging station. • The smart charging stations are located in Toronto (two locations), Markham, Vaughan, Bowmanville, Ajax and Barrie. Initially, the stations will be tested out by the corporate fleets of the project partners, with access expanded as the project moves forward. • The province invested $1 million in the Better Place demonstration centre and charging network.

Honda is voluntarily recalling 3,636 model-year 2011 Honda Civic vehicles and 9 model-year 2011 Acura CSX vehicles in Canada to inspect and possibly replace the fuel pump module inside the gasoline tank. Internal testing revealed that the roll-over valve inside certain fuel pump modules may have been damaged during production. If a vehicle is involved in a rollover crash, the cracked roll-over valve may allow fuel leakage from the gasoline tank into the evaporative canister. Honda is also recalling 2,908 model-year 2011 Odyssey vehicles in Canada to replace the front windshield wiper linkage rod. After extended parking
in freezing temperatures combined with snow or ice, the front windshield wipers may become frozen to the windshield. If the front wipers are activated while frozen, the wiper linkage rod can be damaged, which may prevent normal operation of the front wipers. No crashes or injuries have been reported related to this defect. No crashes or injuries have been reported related to the above defects. Notification to customers will begin in mid-April 2011. Owners of these vehicles can determine if their vehicle requires repair by contacting their Honda dealer or by calling toll free to 1-888-946-6329.

10 tips for faster border crossings
(NC)—Avoid long lineups at airports and border crossings this travel season with these 10 tips: 1. Before you travel, learn your personal exemptions for goods such as alcohol and tobacco.
2. Research which products are allowed into Canada as some are inadmissible. 3. Remember duty–free doesn’t mean tax–free. 4. Report all currency you might be carrying equal to or more than $10,000. When you report to the CBSA, you will be required to fill out a one–page form. The CBSA does not confiscate, hold or seize any of the money provided you are truthful in your declaration. 5. Ensure you have the proper I.D. for yourself and children travelling with you such as a passport or NEXUS card. Check www.cbsa.gc.ca so you know what you need. 6. Be sure to fill in your declaration form honestly and accurately. 7. Declare all your purchases and be prepared to quickly produce receipts and airline tickets, if asked.
8. Never make false or incomplete declarations, as you create unnecessary and frustrating delays for everyone and risk penalties or seizure of goods. 9. Consider applying for a NEXUS membership and save time at air, marine, and land ports of entry when entering Canada or the United States. Check www.nexus.gc.ca for more information or to apply for a membership. 10. Familiarize yourself with the rules and regulations for cross–border travel and shopping. It reduces wait times substantially if you come prepared. The Canada Border Services Agency has more tips for reducing wait times at www.cbsa.gc.ca and real– time tweets on wait times at 22 different Canadian border crossings at http://twitter.com/CBSA_BWT.
Spring cleaning: Top tips to freshen up your ride
(NC)—Ah, springtime. The days are getting longer, leaves are starting to sprout, and the great thaw begins. With this shift in weather comes the promise of warm summer driving and the time to prep your favorite ride for the road. You should begin by washing the exterior of your vehicle, and be sure to clean underneath to remove the corrosive salt, chemicals and grime that build up from winter driving. Use a high pressure hose, paying close attention to wheel wells and bumpers. Next, have your tires changed and rotated to ensure best performance and safety on the roads. While winter tires work best in the snow, they can acceler-
ate and brake poorly and offer reduced tread life on dry asphalt. Spring is the best time to swap back to your performance–oriented summer or all–season tires, storing your winter set for later. Just like your tires, the fluids in your vehicle need to be checked each spring to ensure proper engine performance throughout the seasons. Chances are the radiator in your vehicle uses an extended–life antifreeze coolant to prevent it from freezing. Check the coolant level and quality, and consider flushing the radiator if necessary. Most vehicles require fresh coolant every 240,000 km. While you’re at it, be sure to check

your oil and top up the rest of your fluids. The most common grade of engine oil in Canada is 5W30 which should perform well under both winter and summer driving conditions. Consult your owner’s manual for the recommended grade and quality of oil for your vehicle, and perform an oil and oil filter change at the recommended intervals to provide year–round protection. Beyond these measures, helping keep your engine running at its best this spring is as easy as filling up with a high–quality gasoline. “Gasoline primarily contains carbon and hydrogen molecules, and combustion can cre-

ate a residue, called “gunk”, which is a build–up of carbon particles on critical engine parts,” says Ken Mitchell, an Engineer from Shell Canada. “This gunk has a porous surface that can negatively affect combustion and the performance of your vehicle. Some high–quality fuels, like all three grades of Shell’s Nitrogen Enriched Gasolines, clean and protect critical engine parts from the build–up of gunk while you drive.” After you’ve cleaned it from the inside out, take your ride out for a spin to feel the engine roar to life. Go Transit is expanding its rail fleet and is buying an additional 50 bi-level passenger coaches. The $125 million purchase means GO Transit will have room for an additional 8,000 commuters a day by next year. “There is a major demand for GO to increase its train services, from both a customer service and ridership perspective,” said GO Transit President Gary McNeil. “We need to add new trains and lengthen our existing trains so more bi-level coaches are required now.” By placing the order now, these vehicles, supplied by Thunder Bay manufacturer Bombardier, will be
ready to be put into service beginning in late 2011 and into 2012. This new order will bring the total bi-level coach fleet to 565 coaches. Once in service, these additional 50 bi-level coaches will provide an additional 8,000 seats for commuters. “These kinds of strategic infrastructure investments are all part of the McGuinty government’s Open Ontario plan to create and support jobs today and build foundations for our economy and our families tomorrow,” said Kathleen Wynne, Ontario Minister of Transportation. Production of the bi-level coaches is scheduled to begin in
June 2011, with the first delivery of coaches to arrive in fall 2011. The bi-level coaches have been part of GO’s fleet since 1978 and were designed by Bombardier, in cooperation with GO Transit. GO Transit is the Province of Ontario’s interregional public transit system linking Toronto with the surrounding regions of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). GO carries nearly 57 million passengers a year in an extensive network of train and bus services that spans over 10,000 square kilometres. GO Transit is a division of Metrolinx, an agency of the Province of Ontario.

Freightliner Trucks has introduced the SmartPlex™ Electrical System for the Freightliner 114SD and Business Class M2 platforms. The electrical system provides unmatched flexibility for Truck Equipment Manufacturers (TEM) when configuring a truck to suit specific body installations. The SmartPlex Electrical System uses Freightliner’s proprietary
control modules that connect to the J1939 data bus, controlling power to lights and TEM equipment. SmartPlex also introduces the SmartPlex flex switch and lamp module – capacity for up to 24 switches located in the overhead compartment – which can be installed, programmed and labeled by TEMs for specific body needs.
Laser-etched plastic inserts with icons that are appropriate for each industry and/or the type of truck are also provided, allowing TEM’s to simply snap the inserts into corresponding switches. The system expands the total number of switches and lamps that can be connected to 35 (includes dash switches), a significant increase.

ROAD TODAY ◆ Fleet of the Year (More than 50 power units) ◆ Fleet of the Year (Less than 50 power units) ◆ Entrepreneur of the Year ◆ Owner Operator of the Year
(NC)—For Canadians, spring is all about getting warm, getting out there, and for some, getting a new vehicle. If hitting the open road in a new or used vehicle is on your horizon this spring, take your time, compare prices, makes and models and really think about what you want in a vehicle. Here are some vehicle purchasing tips from the Canadian Consumer Handbook at www.consumerhandbook.ca. It is produced by the federal, provincial and territorial governments and offers helpful and reliable information truly focused on the consumer. • Need vs. want.Think with your head, not your inner sports car driver. What do you really need in a vehicle? What distances and road conditions do you typically travel? Do you travel empty or loaded with gear? Is energy efficiency important to you? • Deal or no deal.Choosing the right dealership is very important. Take time to shop for a dealer whose policies are right for you and always comparison shop. No two dealers are alike. • Options are optional.Beware of dealers wanting to sell you vehicles fully loaded with options; they can re-
ally increase the cost. You can pick and choose the options you want but when you buy near the end of the model year (typically late spring or summer) you may not be able to get all of your choices, such as a specific colour. • Leasing vs. buying. Take the time to compare both ownership options before you make your final decision. The difference in interest rates and down payments from different lenders may surprise you. Whatever you decide, make sure you fully understand all details of your contract, especially the total cost of financing over the terms of the loan or lease. • Beware of lemons. Always have an independent mechanic inspect a used vehicle before you buy it. Research its history for accidents. If you think you may have bought a lemon (a vehicle with a manufacturer’s defect), check with your provincial or territorial consumer affairs office to see if they can help. While there are no “lemon laws” in Canada, there are measures in place to help you. The Office of Consumer Affairs offers tips for consumers who may have bought a defective vehicle at www.ic.gc.ca/consumers.
The extension of Highway 407 East to Harmony Road in Oshawa by 2015, and then to Highway 35/115 by 2020, will help relieve highway congestion and create about 13,000 jobs in the first phase alone. The first phase of construction was originally planned from Brock Road in Pickering to Simcoe Street in Oshawa. This will now be extended further to Harmony Road by 2015 to improve traffic flow. Phase two of the extension to Highway 35/115 in Clarington will be complete by 2020, with an interim interchange at Taunton Road for the East
Durham Link by 2017. The 407 East Extension will better serve residents and businesses along the highway route, relieve congested areas of Highway 401 - Canada’s busiest highway - and allow for efficient movement of goods and people across Ontario. QUICK FACTS • Highway 407 East will remain a publicly owned asset that will increase in value over time. • A historic amount of $2.7 billion was invested in 2010 in Ontario’s roads, highways and bridges
