elcome to the March 2012 edition of Road Today and thanks for your continued interest in the awardwinning magazine for the changing face of the trucking industry. The current edition carries stories, features, updates on new products and developments related to trucking industry. Regular features like Trucking Quotient Quiz, Road Safety Tips, Entertainment, Health Column, Kids Corner, etc. also make good read. The Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) has for many years supported the introduction of an Electronic On-Board Recorder (EOBR) mandate for all trucks where the driver is currently required to complete a paper logbook. With the click of a button or a simple four digit text on your cell phone, the CTA has now made it possible for both company owners and drivers to let MPs from their province know how and why they support the introduction of a universal EOBR mandate in Canada. We take this opportunity to invite our readers to participate in this campaign supporting EOBR mandate. For more details, visit CTA’s home page at www.cantruck.ca and click on the “Support EOBRs” button. Distracted driving continues to pose a serious and growing danger to road safety. Distracted driving refers to all forms of distracted or inattentive driving such as adjusting a vehicle’s entertainment or GPS unit, eating and drinking, using a handheld device or viewing a DVD player or computer screen, etc. While the use of BlueTooth technology or wired head-sets are allowed under the distracted driving legislation, drivers must realize that the true danger to public

safety lies in the distraction, not the device. The truck show season is ready to roll out with industry leading events lined up throughout the spring season. To start with, the Mid America Truck Show will be held later in the month in Louisville, USA, immediately followed by the Truck World in Mississauga (April 19-21). I would like to encourage all our readers to spare valuable time and visit these events to keep abreast of the latest industry updates. Many of the shows offer free entry to pre-registered visitors, so check out their websites and don’t miss out on the opportunities to network and be well informed. The space booking for the 4th Annual Road Today Truck Show– Canada’s Multicultural Truck Show to be held on May 26th & 27th at the Powerade Centre in Brampton is in full swing. The trucking event will include plenty of activities including Inside & Outside Trade Show, Show & Shine Competition, Job Fair, Trucking Excellence Awards, Family Entertainment, Ethnic Food Stalls and lots more. Entry & parking to the show is always free for visitors. Don’t forget to tune in to ‘Road Today Radio’ our weekly radio program broadcast every Sunday on CJMR 1320 AM radio dial at 8.30 am for latest trucking and transportation news, laws and regulations. Drive safe. Always remember: someone back home is waiting for you!

Alliance Truck Parts Launches Online Parts Cross-Reference Tool

A

lliance Truck Parts, an aftermarket parts provider for the commercial transportation industry, has launched an online parts lookup tool to help customers find the right part among countless competing numbers and naming conventions. The web-based tool consolidates data from the top OEM and independent manufacturers creating a single point of access to find the right all-makes part. With a simple web interface, visitors can search for the part needed in two ways: by the Alliance Truck Parts number or by a competing supplier’s part number. With the click of a mouse, the parts lookup and cross-reference tool provides the suggested part number and information from Alliance Truck Parts, and by entering a city and state, it offers links to dealers and relevant parts specials in the area. “We’re proud to be able to offer our customers this new tool that greatly simplifies finding a suggested all-makes part,” said Daniel Haggerty, director of parts and service marketing for Daimler Trucks North America. The tool was created with dealer parts managers, fleet managers and independent customers in mind. Previously, multiple parts catalogs had to be consulted and compared to find the desired part. The new online tool solves that issue, saving valuable time, as well as being more accurate with up-to-date part number information from multiple suppliers. See the new tool at www.alliancetruckparts.com/products/ partsreference.asp.

Meritor WABCO to Offer SafeTraK, Takata’sLane Departure Warning System in North America

M

eritor WABCO Vehicle Control Systems will market and distribute SafeTraK, Takata’s vehicle sensor system which offers Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and Driver Alertness Warning features to the North American commercial vehicle industry. The agreement is a result of a newly forged alliance between Meritor WABCO and Takata Corporation’s U.S. subsidiary, TK Holdings Inc. This vision-based system monitors the road ahead and audibly warns drivers if they unintentionally depart from a lane or the road. The SafeTraK LDW system alerts drivers of weaving, lane drifts or lane changes that occur without a turn-signal application by detecting and classifying lane markers on the road through a fully integrated, compact unit. The unit is composed of a camera, optics, processor and a power supply that assist in tracking and projecting the lane ahead. Installation and setup is simple. The system automatically calibrates itself using the unit’s integrated diagnostics and can be installed directly on the vehicle’s windshield in less than an hour. “With more than 800 million miles of proven performance on commercial vehicles, SafeTraK LDW continues to assist in driver safety and awareness across North America,” said Kurt Hall, senior director of Vehicle Dynamics and Controls, Meritor WABCO. “While it is ultimately the driver’s responsibility to make sure that they are alert and engaged, a significant reduction in the number and severity of roadway departure crashes involving commercial vehicles could be achieved simply by alerting distracted or fatigued drivers of unintended lane drifts and changes. As a leader in safety and performance, our company continuously strives to engineer and market the highestquality, most reliable safety systems. Our alliance with Takata further supports this effort and we’re honored to provide fleets with SafeTraKto deliver advanced driver safety.” SafeTraK features lane and obstacle detection and warning, drowsy-driver www.roadtoday.com

warning, 12-or 24-volt operation and integrated diagnostics. SafeTraK complements Takata’s portfolio of electronic products, including collision sensors, occupant protection systems and other safety-related electronics.

Navistar Advances Commitment to Natural Gas Through Partnership With Clean Energy

Company Commits to Comprehensive Natural Gas Product Strategy with Broad Range of Medium- and Heavy-Duty Truck Offerings

N

avistar has announced its launch of a comprehensive natural gas strategy, including integrated natural gas product offerings and a strategic partnership with Clean Energy Fuels Corp. that will provide customers with a sustainable, commercially viable solution for adding natural gas powered trucks to their fleets. “Natural gas has clearly emerged as the most realistic alternative fuel option for the trucking industry,” said Dan Ustian, Navistar chairman, president and CEO. “Together, Navistar and Clean Energy have come up with a breakthrough program that offers customers a quicker payback on their investment plus added fuel costs savings from day one of operation. When combined with Navistar’s industry-leading dealer network and Clean Energy’s unmatched fuel distribution system, customers can be confident that bringing natural gas vehicles into their fleets makes good business sense.” “We believe the deployment of new, innovative, heavy-duty natural gas engines by world-class original equipment truck manufacturers like Navistar is accelerating the transition to natural gas fuel as a game-changer for heavy-duty trucking,” said Andrew J. Littlefair, Clean Energy President and CEO. “We welcome the opportunity to work with Navistar to bring the benefits of clean, cost-effective, domestically abundant natural gas fuel to the company’s trucking customer base.” By leveraging the company’s existing integrated vehicle and powertrain platforms, Navistar will offer the broadest range of Class 6 through Class 8 CNG-/ LNG-powered vehicles in the category. Clean Energy will provide a comprehensive CNG/LNG fueling solution to meet customer demands and aid in bringing new customers into the natural gas market. Navistar and Clean Energy will work closely with the company’s commercial truck dealers and fleet customers on the deployment of natural gas powered trucks and a natural gas distribution support system. Together, the companies will demonstrate how a natural gas integrated vehicle offering with the right distribution and fueling solution can be integrated into a fleet’s operations to reduce costs and www.roadtoday.com

drive efficiencies. The strategic partnership will help accelerate the adoption of natural gas technologies by making it easier for customers to invest in the new technology, including incentives aimed at neutralizing the cost difference for the diesel fuel equivalent for those who purchase at least 1,000 diesel gallon equivalents of natural gas fuel each month.

ant to let the federal members of parliament know that you are behind the introduction of electronic-on-board recording devices? With the click of a button or a simple four digit text on your cell phone, the Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) has made it possible for both company owners and drivers to let MPs from their province know how and why they support the introduction of a universal Electronic On-Board Recorder (EOBR) mandate in Canada. “Many companies and drivers have already embraced EOBR technology and others are either in the process of introducing EOBRs\electronic logbooks or are awaiting the anticipated regulation to make the technology mandatory,” said David Bradley, CEO of the alliance. CTA, a federation of the provincial trucking associations, representing over 4,500 trucking companies who employ over 150,000 Canadians, has for many years supported the introduction of an EOBR mandate for all trucks where the driver is currently required to complete a paper logbook. An EOBR is a device used to track, collect and record electronic data regarding a vehicle’s operation. In this specific case, the function of an EOBR would be used solely to monitor a driver’s hours of service (HoS). EOBRs for the purpose of monitoring HoS come in a wide variety of applications that can easily serve all types of trucking operations. “We’re inviting carriers, the majority of whom we know are in support of EOBRs, and the growing number of drivers who, once they have experience with EOBRs see them not as a threat but as a positive thing, to voice their support for a mandate directly to federal members of parliament,” said Bradley. All people have to do is visit CTA’s home page at www.cantruck.ca and click on the “Support EOBRs” button. From there, they can choose which type of letter to send in English or French. By entering their name and province, a message of support will automatically be sent directly to their MPs. Professional commercial drivers can also send a four digit text code from their cell phones that will trigger a text message to the MPs. Simply text the letters eobr to the number, 77777. Or, to send the letter in French, text: eobrfrench to 77777. “It’s important that our elected officials hear from those who support an EOBR mandate, not just those who oppose enhanced compliance monitoring,” said Bradley. “Paper logs are an ineffective and archaic way to monitor compliance with the hours of service regulations for both the regulators and the industry; if the rules were introduced to combat driver fatigue and we’re serious about making our highways safer, then the MPs need to get behind an EOBR mandate.” 18

avy Truck Sales hung its sign in the prime area for the trucking industry and opened its doors to provide a pleasant truck-buying experience for its clients. The name Davy should sound familiar to people in the industry because Robert Davy founded Truck Equipment and Service Co. in Scarborough in 1965. His son, Adam, obviously couldn’t stay away from the business as he started working with his dad when he was only 12! Adam Davy has since built his career up in truck sales following the great example of his dad. His latest move has taken him to establish Davy Truck Sales on Shawson Drive. Adam plans to continue his pattern of making his customers feel satisfied, by providing an environment in which the whole experience of buying a truck will be smooth and pleasant. With that in mind, he has put in place an inventory of previously owned quality Class 6-8 trucks. The quality is shown in that the trucks will be backed with extended warranties that cover the vehicle wherever it may be in North America. If financing is an issue, Davy Truck Sales has it covered, as his Leasing division can handle that as well. Adam and his staff are prepared to welcome clients to their new location at 5810 Shawson Drive, in the Dixie and 401 area of Mississauga. Davy Truck Sales can be reached at 905 695 5526.

The new ISX12 G is currently in field trials with full production expected to commence in early 2013. The ISX12 G natural gas engine is based on the Cummins ISX12 diesel engine platform, the newest member of Cummins heavy duty engine family. The ISX12 G will operate exclusively on natural gas (CNG or LNG) utilizing Cummins Westport’s proprietary spark-ignited, stoichiometric combustion with cooled exhaust gas recirculation (SEGR) technology, first introduced with the 8.9 litre ISL G. The ISX12 G features three-way catalyst aftertreatment, which is packaged as a muffler and is maintenance free. No diesel particulate filter or selective catalytic reduction aftertreatment will be required. Preliminary specifications include a range of ratings to 400 hp and 1,450 lb-ft torque, optional engine brake, and manual and automatic transmission capability to meet customer and original equipment manufacturer requirements. The ISX12 G will be manufactured in Cummins’ heavy-duty engine plant in Jamestown, New York. Volvo Trucks Safety Award Returns in 2012

For the fourth consecutive year, Volvo Trucks will recognize two North American fleets for their commitment to safety through the Volvo Trucks Safety Award. Recipients of the 2012 award will each receive $25,000 to be used toward their safety-related activities

M

ichelin again joins Volvo Trucks in sponsoring the Volvo Trucks Safety Award, which focuses on the importance of highway safety for the trucking industry and for all motorists. “Safety is paramount for both Michelin and Volvo Trucks, so we’re pleased to recognize the hard work and dedication to safety exhibited by the industry’s top performers,” said Ron Huibers, president, Volvo Trucks North American sales & marketing. “Volvo’s longstanding core value of safety guides our designs and is woven throughout our products,” Huibers said. “The Volvo cab design, safety cage and other passive safety features protect drivers, while integrated active safety technologies, like Volvo Enhanced Stability Technology and Volvo Enhanced Cruise, improve safety for all motorists. The Volvo Trucks Safety Award allows us to help fleets strengthen their safety cultures and programs.”

The Volvo Trucks Safety Award is open to all U.S. and Canadian fleets operating at least five Class 8 units. Fleets must have at least one Volvo tractor in operation to be eligible for the award. Entrants will be ranked by their accident frequency rates. Participating fleets will also be judged on their accident prevention activities. The deadline for entry is July 31, 2012. The winners of the award will be announced during the American Trucking Associations’ Management Conference & Exhibition in October 2012. The two grand prizes will be awarded to the fleets with the best records in two divisions based on annual vehicle miles traveled: less than 20 million miles and more than 20 million miles. Complete rules and entry forms are available at: www.volvotrucks. us.com/safetyaward.

What’s In Your Social Media ToolBox? T

hink of social media as a giant toolbox for your transportation company with a thousand-and-one tools to help promote, build and run your business. But with so many tools to choose from, how do you know which ones are the best ‘fit’ for your organization? The seemingly endless array of options can certainly be overwhelming. For this reason, it may be helpful to first define what it is you are looking to accomplish to help you decide where best to invest your time. While there are new tools introduced every day, following is a run-down of some of the most common applications out there for each area of your business. Networking Networking is the first thing that comes to many peoples’ minds when they think of social media. There is little doubt that it is fast becoming a ‘must’ for businesses seeking additional ways to connect and strengthen relationships with new and existing clients, partners, employees and others. There are a number of tools to choose from in this area but the ‘big three’ have and continue to be Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Certainly, these tools have the highest volume of users and are the most robust of the tools available where web-based networking is concerned. LinkedIn, in particular, is an excellent tool for business networking. It enables you to connect to new people through your existing contact list, or by using groups, colleges or companies you have in common to initiate a connection. Branding and Marketing Social media is also a powerful way to promote your brand, get your message out and develop a reputation for yourself as a ‘go-to’ source for a particular area of interest. Once again, Facebook and Twitter, as well

as YouTube are among the biggest players here, although there have been a number of new players introduced to this realm of social media in recent months. Facebook is a great branding tool because it allows you to create a `page` for your company where you can share written content, video and images. You can also host discussions on topics and issues of common interest on your own page or on the pages and profiles of others Twitter also has some not-to-besneezed-at marketing and branding capabilities: While it limits your posts to 140 characters, Twitter is great because it allows you to link to external content hosted elsewhere on the web. In other words, you can use Twitter to drive traffic to your website, blog or other online space. In addition to the big players on the social media playing field, there is a new type of tool that is growing in popularity called content curation. Sites like Storify, allow people to collect different types of content related to a particular topic in one place. This content can then be shared or embedded anywhere you like. For example, a transportation company could have a Storify page on their website or blog with a collection of blog posts, articles, photos, video and tweets related to trucking technology or transportation legislation are just a couple of relevant examples for transportation folks. QR Codes are also a (relatively) new kid on the block when it comes to social media tools for branding purposes. QR codes are not unlike barcodes and are found in all kinds of interesting virtual and physical spaces. When scanned by a mobile device, the user is then directed to whatever online location the creator wishes. The great thing about QR codes is that they can be found anywhere, from the side of a truck to a business card... They can also be tracked. 29

Matching Freight Loadboards have become a way of doing business for many transportation companies, allowing them to find trading partners online. While most of the freight matching tools available focus strictly on the transaction of freight and equipment, these tools are also, slowly becoming more `social,` enabling trading partners to build and strengthen business relationships. Watch for some big changes in this arena in the months to come. Administration & Organization There are an increasing number of social media tools out there that are designed to help people run their businesses more smoothly, whether that`s by making it easier for teams to collaborate or by providing additional venues for customer support. Here are a few of the more popular ones: Google Docs allows people in different locations to work on the same document draft, which is hosted on the ‘cloud’ on the web. Skype is free video chat tool that is getting increasingly robust as it adds capabilities like teleconferencing, sharing of documents and screensharing. Hootsuite, Tweetdeck, Seesmic and a host of others are tools that help you organize your social media activities by allowing you to manage all of your social media accounts from one place. Some of these tools also allow for easy tracking of statistics such as clickthroughs, reposts of your content etc. And the best part about all of these tools is that they all have versions that are free! If after reading this you are still feeling overwhelmed, get online and poke around. I have found that learning-by-doing is the best way to take the intimidation-factor out of social media. Enjoy and Good Luck!

Mack Trucks Now Offering MVASIST At No Charge to Customers Purchasing New Trucks MVASIST, the fleet service management platform from Mack Trucks will now be offered at no charge to customers who purchase a new Mack truck. Launched in 2008, MVASIST is a web-based system that allows fleet managers, service providers and dealers to work together in real time to expedite repairs and maximize uptime. Mack began offering MVASIST at no charge in January 2012. MVASIST allows customers to improve communications, manage costs, reduce downtime and increase operating efficiency. Through an online portal, customers are able to communicate with the dealer, initiate repairs, access a complete service history, approve and monitor repair status and manage repair expenses. “We are excited to offer MVASIST at no cost to our customers who purchase a new Mack truck,” said John Walsh, Mack vice president, marketing. “This offer is evidence of our commitment to providing customers with the tools they need to more efficiently and effectively do their job. MVASIST enables timely communication, accurate estimates and access to a complete service history, all in one portal, which is what our customers told us they wanted and needed.” Mack dealers and service providers use MVASIST to assemble consistent, complete, professional estimates of service operations. The system also delivers fleet and vehicle-specific information,

including a customer profile and warranty coverage. The fleet manager has the ability to authorize or deny repairs, and receive status alerts during the entire service event. MVASIST also allows the option of proactively planning and scheduling routine inspections and service. A service advisor can recommend appropriate maintenance, and fleet managers can, at a glance, see the vehicle’s service history. One Mack customer, for example, has customized the MVASIST service platform to automatically recommend an inspection of tires, lights, seat belts and safety equipment whenever one of its tractors is at a dealer for service work.

Change Starts with You!

Bruce Outridge has been in the transportation industry for twenty five years. He now operates Outridge Consulting Services helping create professional drivers for the transportation industry. For more details please visit www.outridge.ca.

A

s the world moves on each year the life of a professional truck driver is constantly in a flux. There are new regulations, undetermined amount of freight, fuel prices that bounce faster than a bouncing ball and wages that seem questionable at times. However the industry goes on and the truck driver prevails. The question is, is that enough? There is no doubt the industry is changing with technology and safety being the front runners, but there is one factor that is going down, the professionalism of drivers. Driver professionalism can be learned to a certain point through training, but when it comes right down to it, it is more about attitude and that comes from within. As the demographics for the industry change the professional drivers that were brought into the business by their relatives and were taught about the industry with passion are now retiring. There is a new demographic entering the industry, one that doesn’t have the same passion for the trucking industry that we have once known. It may seem hard, some reports might paint a dismal picture of the industry, but we need that passion back. The industry will always be there, transportation isn’t going away soon, the mode of travel may change but in the end transportation will remain the key way of bringing products to the public. As an industry we have been looking outside for help with the industry, looking for other

ways to bump up our injured industry. We have looked to government, we have looked to schools and technology, but in the end I believe we have to look inside our own people. Outsiders can’t help us because they don’t understand us. As I talk to outside agencies about the trucking industry there is a big misconception to the type of job a truck driver does and the way they are

compensated. Contrary to belief there are great companies out there, ones that pay well, ones that have decent equipment, ones that have pride in what they do. Where I hear the

grumblings are from inside certain operations themselves. Dispatchers against drivers, Owner Operators against drivers, management against drivers. The turmoil is coming from within. So how do we fix our flailing industry, how do we make it better to attract the people we want in the industry. We start from the heart of the industry, we start with the passion. I talk with many companies in this industry and the one element I don’t see people teaching is leadership. There are safety meetings, safety talks, company meetings, but no leadership meetings. The people who started this industry early on didn’t start because of the money, they started because of the passion. They started because of their love of the road, the freedom from the office. Why do you think that generations have held positions in the transportation industry. Do you think if it was that bad that many of our former leaders would have let their sons and daughters join such an industry. I agree that the industry has changed a great deal from those early days. It will continue to change because the industry is looking for solutions and as long as you are looking for solutions it brings change. If this industry is to survive it needs to change, if it is to bring new people into the folds it needs to change, If you want the industry for the future things need to change. Be the first to lead that change, change always starts from within. That change starts with you!

LEAVE A LANE. IT 'S THE LAW.

Police, fire and ambulance personnel are often required to do their work on the shoulders of busy highways. For safety reasons, the law requires all drivers to slow down and proceed with caution when passing an emergency vehicle parked on the side of the highway with its lights activated. If the highway has more than one lane, the law also requires all drivers to move over leaving at least one lane between their vehicle and the parked emergency vehicle, if it can be done safely. Obeying this law will save lives! Violating it can result in a $2,000 fine and three demerit points.

DOT Inspection – Things to Ponder!!!!! R

ecently I had the pleasure of discussing the DOT Inspection system with a retired DOT Inspector. I met him in the U.S. at a CSA Seminar. First, I would like to point out, that I am neither taking sides, nor promoting anyone against the other as being correct or incorrect. During our discussion the Inspector went on to tell me: If we see one problem, with the truck or the driver, we start to do a closer look, and then a more thorough inspection. Everyone I am sure agrees this is only common sense. Well take a look below this is what

they look for and what they expect. Tell the drivers to at the very least show some courtesy and things will always go smoother. • Clear company name & US DOT numbers on the truck. • Current IFTA decals. • Important lights - all of them are important but mainly the following ones: headlights, tail lights and turn signals out. • Driver - Be polite, awake, clean, cooperative etc. • Drivers have the license, registration card, IFTA card, and insurance card, logs ready to be inspected clean, neat and legible. • A clean truck, especially on

OTA Applauds Proposed Changes to Licence Renewal Policy for Truck Drivers Over 65

T

he Ontario Trucking Association is applauding a proposed amendment which aims to eliminate the requirement for commercial drivers over 65 years of age to take an annual road test in order to renew their Class A licence -- something the association has been working closely with the Ministry of Transportation on for a number of years. “MTO’s proposed amendment reflects a balanced, fair approach to resolving this matter,” says OTA President David Bradley. “We are very happy for the drivers and we commend Transportation Minister Bob Chiarelli for his leadership in taking up this issue and for bringing swift attention to it so early in his tenure.” Under the proposal published in the Ontario Regulatory Registry: • Only those commercial drivers between the ages of 65 and 79 that accumulate three or more demerit points on their licence or are involved in an at-fault collision will be required to complete a practical road and airbrake test; • The licence renewal period ROAD TODAY MARCH 2012

where a written test is required for drivers between the ages of 65 and 79 is extended to every five years (bringing it in line with all other “A” class drivers); • Align the written airbrake test cycle with the written knowledge test cycle and require a practical airbrake test only when a road test is required. The proposal also maintains the existing reduced road test fee; the use automatic transmissions if a road test is necessary; the use of diagrams during the airbrake practical to show comprehension of air brake systems, and the submission of medicals on an annual basis. The five year renewal cycle and performance based thresholds for triggering a road test will also apply to class D drivers in the 65 to 79 age category. At age 80, all testing reverts back to an annual cycle. The change will not occur immediately; MTO expects it will be able to deliver this change within 9 to 15 months after the proposal makes its way through the regulatory process at Queen’s Park and technical updates can be made. 38

the inside shows you care about your personal space. • Turn your Radio and CB Radio off, as well as your cell phone while pulled into the Inspection area. • If you were recently inspected in any State or Province, have a copy of that report ready to show. If every driver on the road follows these simple guidelines, they will speed through Inspections faster, with fewer headaches, less questions, less chance of finding a violation, etc. At the end of the day most Inspectors are doing their job, the same as the office staff or the driver, or the owner, or the mechanic or the electrician or a plumber.

Stirling Truck Show cancelled T

he annual Stirling Truck Show held every Father’s Day weekend by the Stirling & District Lions Club has been cancelled. All the profits from the educational and public friendly show were used for community work. During the tenure of the truck show, countless thousands of volunteer hours went into the planning and hosting this event from various community organizations, businesses, industry leaders and Lions members. According to Dave Potts, Chair of the Stirling Truck Show Committee, the time had come to terminate the show as it had become too large of an event for volunteers to run and manage. The committee members thanked all those who supported the show over the last five years.

Bruxism (Teeth Grinding) Dr Christopher H. Singh Chiropractor, runs Trans Canada Chiropractic at 230 Truck Stop in Woodstock, Ont. He can be reached at 519-421-2024 E-mail: chris_singh@sympatico.ca

B

ruxism is the medical term for a condition in which a person grinds or clenches their teeth. In most cases, people are not even aware that they are doing it. Grinding or clenching may occur during day or at night during sleep. In many instances, bruxism is very mild and does not require any form of treatment. However, in severe cases, chronic teeth clenching or grinding may lead to headaches, teeth damage and jaw disorders. The signs and symptoms of bruxism can vary from person to person. However, the most common include loud teeth grinding or clenching, worn down or flatten teeth, jaw pain and earaches, headaches or damage to the cheeks and tongue. The exact cause of bruxism is not completely understood at this time. Presently, it is thought that it is caused by a combination of physical and psychological factors. Chronic anxiety, stress or tension are thought to be major components of bruxism. Also, people who have an aggressive or competitive personality type also seem to be more at risk of developing this condition. To add to this, lack of sleep or sleep problems may increase a person’s chances. As you can see, professional truck drivers may have many of the common risk factors. Finally, dental problems such as abnormal alignment of teeth may

cause uneven pressure thus leading to grinding. Although bruxism rarely leads to serious complications, it can cause other physical issues that are very uncomfortable. Tensiontype headaches are caused when the muscles in the jaw, head and

neck become strained and fatigued due to the constant contraction. Consequently, this leads to tightness and pain in the muscles. Another possible complication of bruxism is temporomandibular joint disorders. This occurs when the jaw joints located just in front of your ear are injured causing mechanical dysfunction and pain. It is important to consult your doctor or dentist if you experience any of the above signs and symptoms, or if others complain that you make a grinding noise while you are asleep. Bruxism is usually diagnosed based on a detailed medical history and physical examination. During the examination your health care professional will look for signs of clenching and grinding or changes in your teeth and mouth.

If the professional suspects that your bruxism is caused by a psychological issue they may make a referral to a therapist or councilor. They may also make a referral to a sleep specialist if they feel a sleep related disorder is present. The sleep specialist may decide to conduct addition tests such as a sleep study or video monitoring. In most cases, formal treatment is not necessary as most people do not grind or clench their teeth severely enough to require treatment. However, if treatment is necessary, it is usually aimed at addressing the underlying cause of the bruxism. Stress management therapies such as meditation, exercise and relaxations techniques are commonly used. If the cause of the bruxism is a dental issue, therapeutic appliances such as splints and mouth guards may be prescribed. Finally, pain and anti-inflammatory medications are usually used to treat pain and swelling. There are a few home remedies that can be used to prevent or treat mild bruxism. First of all, try to reduce stress in your life. Next, avoid consuming stimulating substances such as coffee, tea or alcohol during the evening. Finally, attend regular dental examinations as they will be able to identify the early sings of bruxism. Until next month drive safely!
