“The D16 fuel economy is huge - 2 mpg savings means around $20000/truck.” “We run 54 power units – 48 of which are now Volvo. We transport fuel in b-trains in a demanding environment throughout Alberta and BC. What became apparent very quickly with our Volvo D16s is that our round trip fuel consumption came in considerably less than with our previous fleet. The D16 is a bulletproof engine – we have experienced savings all around – from fuel economy, downtime, and maintenance to driver safety and loyalty. Our 9 cents/mile is approximately 40% of what we were experiencing before we changed to Volvo. It’s just a phenomenal product.” Mark Taylor, Western Canada Regional Manager, Flying J Canada Transport Test drive Volvo advantages at your nearest Volvo dealer. elcome to the September 2013 edition of Road Today and thanks for your continued interest in the awardwinning magazine for Canada’s multicultural trucking industry. Inside you will find the latest updates related to the trucking industry plus all regular features like Trucking Quotient Quiz, Road Safety Tips, Entertainment, Health Column, Kids Corner, and much more. The National Trucking Week 2013 (September 1-7) is a special occasion to acknowledge and spotlight the contributions of the hundreds of thousands of men and women of the Canadian trucking industry who keep the country’s freight moving, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We take this opportunity to congratulate and thank every one who has chosen to build a career in the trucking industry and make valuable contributions. This is a time to celebrate and let’s do that in style. By the time this edition reaches your hands, kids will be back to school following the summer break. Back to school means more children walking and biking on our roads. Younger children often have limited experience with traffic and lack the skills to negotiate traffic safely. Motorists need to take special care while driving and especially around the bus stop and school zone areas. Please remember that road safety is a shared responsibility and parents, teachers, students, motorists and everyone else play a significant role.

Operation Air Brake / Brake Safety Week dedicated to improve commercial vehicle brake safety throughout North America will be held this month from September 8 to 14. The objective of the campaign is to reduce the number of highway crashes caused by faulty braking systems on commercial vehicles by conducting roadside inspections and educating drivers, mechanics and others on the importance of proper brake inspection, maintenance and operation. We hope the campaign serves its purpose successfully. The Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF) and Eco-Kare International have recently released the findings of their feasibility study to create a Canadian wildlife-vehicle collision clearinghouse. With the proper data, drivers could be provided region-specific information about the increased collision risk associated with seasonal movement patterns of wildlife across roads. We welcome this initiative and efforts towards addressing the significant problem of wildlife-vehicle collisions in Canada. The 4th Annual Trucking for a Cure on October 5th this year will be starting and ending at the TA Travel Centre in Woodstock, Ontario with lots of activities planned for the whole family to enjoy. This is a great cause and we encourage our readers and patrons to support the event (see details on Page 44). Meanwhile, enjoy the weather, stay in touch and shall see you next month! Western Star and Klein Products Develop

High-Capacity Water Tank Truck

W

estern Star Trucks has announced the availability of a 6,500 gallon water tank truck for the 4900XD. Developed in collaboration with Klein Products, Inc., the truck features a Klein K650 water tank to provide a more efficient road dust control operation for construction, quarry, and mining applications. Ontario, Calif.-based Klein Products is a worldwide manufacturer of water distributing equipment, patented pump systems and related components. Western

Economic 4900XD truck is equipped with Klein K650 water tank for more efficient liquid application

Star sought Klein to develop the specialized 4900XD water tank truck based on its ability to outfit the vehicle with a high-volume water distribution system. Available to order in a day cab configuration, the Western Star 4900XD is equipped with Klein’s largest available water tank for Class 8 vehicles, reducing the need for frequent refill trips when spraying mine roads, waste rock dumps and other exposed surfaces. “The 4900XD features an extremely low center of gravity and is available with a rollover protection system (ROPS). The truck is also spec’d with outboard cab mounts and up to 20,000 lb. front and 70,000 lb. rear suspension to maximize stability on uneven terrain and provide a more comfortable ride. Additionally, the Klein K650 tank’s distinctive trapezoid design greatly improves rear visibility for drivers. Spec’d with a sturdy, custom-drilled 3.8 million RBM steel frame chassis, galvannealed steel cab and aluminum fenders, the 4900XD water tank truck provides critical protection and long-term durability, even in the most adverse job conditions. The 4900XD can be equipped with a fuel efficient Detroit™ DD15, DD16 or DDC 60 Tier III engine, each easily accessible through the truck’s three-piece butterfly hood. RT

celebration

September 1 - 7, 2013

Let’s Celebrate National Trucking Week! Greetings from the Canadian Trucking Alliance!

To the Men and Women of the Canadian Trucking Industry in Celebration of National Trucking Week 2013

N

ational Trucking Week 2013 is being celebrated held from September 1st to 7th. What started as an idea from the Canadian Trucking Alliance in the latter part of the 1990’s, National Trucking Week has been embraced by the industry as a way to spotlight the contributions of the hundreds of thousands of men and women of the Canadian trucking industry who keep the country’s freight moving, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. During National Trucking Week, various events will be occurring across the country where the trucking community in Canada – and we hope others – will come together to celebrate a job well done, to recognize those who make it happen and to promote the industry’s dedication to safety – not only of our own but that of the people with whom trucks share the roads and highways – and to environmental enhancement. There will be barbeques, company picnics and all kinds of other things happening. These celebrations may seem modest in comparison to what the industry and its people are asked to do every week of the year. But, they are also befitting an industry that works hard for every dime, that takes satisfaction in a job well done and spending time with each other. The industry is emerging from the depths of the recession. And, while we are far from out of the woods yet in terms of the economy, it is a testament to the hard work, the dedication and the perseverance of everyone in every company that there is every reason

to believe that the industry is poised for new growth and new opportunity. As I have said before, the glory years of trucking are yet to come. We have the best people, providing the best possible service. Trucking is more than a job to most people in the industry; it is a way of life – one that gets into your blood. So, to all those people who make the industry -- drivers, mechanics, dispatchers, or if you work at any one of the hundreds of other jobs that keep our economy moving, I thank you on behalf of the Canadian Trucking Alliance and the provincial trucking associations. It is surely a privilege and an honour for me to be associated with such a remarkable group of individuals. Most of the people of the trucking industry are unsung heroes. While you may feel you toil in anonymity, be proud of what you do, know that you are appreciated and enjoy National Trucking Week 2013. Sincerely,

David H. Bradley President and Chief Executive Officer

ROAD TODAY Media Group extends heartiest CONGRATULATIONS to the trucking industry on the occasion of NATIONAL TRUCKING WEEK 2013 @roadtoday

am amazed at how many companies do not take the time to explain the various acronyms we use in the industry, and what they are spending money on. In the coming few months, I will continue with acronyms and what they mean. ACE: No! it has nothing to do with the highest card in a deck of cards. It is the Automated Customs Environment. Information transmitted ahead of your arrival to the U.S.A. entry point so you are pre-cleared for arrival and entry to the United States. ACI: The Canadian equivalent of ACE however it stands for Advance Commercial Information. It is the same as above, only at the time or writing; it is not 100% fully implemented and or ready for full implementation yet. B/L: What is it? Simply it is the Bill of Lading. What 3 things does it do however are very complex. (a) It is a receipt for the cargo (b) It is a Contract for Carriage and (c) It is a Transfer of Title to the cargo. Once all the buying and selling terms have been met, the Transfer of Title to the cargo takes place from seller to buyer. CBP: U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is a federal law enforcement agency of the United States Department of Homeland Security charged with regulating and facilitating international trade, collecting import duties, and enforcing U.S. regulations, including trade, customs and immigration. CBSA: The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is a federal law enforcement agency that is responsible for border enforcement, immigration enforcement and customs services. C-TPAT: The Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT) is a voluntary supply chain security program led by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and focused on improving the security of private companies’ supply chains with respect to terrorism. FAST: I know we all want drivers to have a FAST Card, however have companies taken the time to explain what FAST means? The Free and Secure Trade (FAST) program is a commercial clearance program designed to ensure safety and security while expediting legitimate trade across the Canada–U.S. border. PIP: This is the Canadian equivalent of C-TPAT. However it is Partners in Protection. You can voluntarily apply for participation but still have to meet the same criteria as U.S. SLC: This term is for carriers to train their drivers to write on a Bill of Lading. It means Shippers Load and Count. It is a recognized term and protects the carriers and the shippers and the consignee’s best interests, especially when picking up a pre-loaded trailer for movement across the border. Be careful what you sign. Read it, understand it, and only if you are comfortable, accept it. RT

“The Cascadia Evolution provides the industry a truck that pays immediate dividends by dramatically reducing overall total cost of ownership.”

Freightliner Cascadia Evolution Surpasses 15,000 Orders Freightliner Trucks has announced that its 2014 Cascadia Evolution has surpassed more than 15,000 orders since the model’s start of production in March 2013. The Cascadia Evolution is pacing the industry in terms of order intake for longhaul applications that demand the highest level of fuel efficiency.

P

owered by the newly designed Detroit DD15 engine, the Cascadia Evolution features aerodynamic and efficiency improvements that deliver up to an additional 7 percent improvement in fuel economy over an EPA 2010-compliant Cascadia, and up to 5 percent improvement in fuel efficiency over the 2013 Cascadia with first-generation aerodynamic enhancements. “Surpassing 15,000 orders highlights the demand from our top customers to acquire today’s vehicle benchmark in terms of fuel efficiency,” said David Hames, general manager, marketing and strategy, Daimler Trucks North America. “The Cascadia Evolution provides the industry a truck that pays immediate dividends by dramatically reducing overall total cost of ownership.” With standard features that seamlessly combine the Cascadia’s already sleek profile with enhanced aerodynamics, the Cascadia Evolution incorporates several frontal area updates designed to improve airflow and aerodynamics including a new air dam,

bumper closure and a hood-to-bumper fill. The Cascadia Evolution also includes an improved windshield seal, elliptical-shaped aerodynamic mirrors and an integrated antenna. New wheel covers on the rear tandem axles, chassis side fairings and 20-inch side extenders further contribute to the truck’s efficiency. Cooling enhancements include a 1,400 square-inch radiator, which features a revised baffling system and new radiator mounting design that contribute to improved cooling capacity and increased durability. The Detroit Virtual Technician system – standard on the Cascadia Evolution – helps reduce downtime and decreases maintenance costs by providing real-time engine diagnostics, enabling drivers and fleet managers to quickly and accurately evaluate events, and in many cases allowing them to remain driving when others would have to stop to evaluate the event. It also minimizes time in the shop by almost eliminating the diagnostic time since it is completed when the truck arrives at the Detroit customer support center. Detroit powertrain components, including the new Detroit DT12 Automated Manual transmission and Detroit Axles, can provide additional benefits that further contribute to the truck’s reliability, durability and performance. IndustryRESEARCH

TIRF, Eco-Kare and State Farm release findings regarding

wildlife-vehicle collisions in Canada The Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF) and Eco-Kare International have released the findings of their feasibility study to create a Canadian wildlife-vehicle collision clearinghouse. This study was made possible thanks to primary funding from State Farm and secondary funding from the Ontario Wildlife Foundation.

I

n stage one of the study, researchers summarized the available data sources on wildlife-vehicle collisions in Canada. Researchers found that the problem of such collisions in Canada is significant but that despite available data sources, data were too limited to accurately measure their impact. Of equal concern, data about the species involved in these collisions were found to be lacking. Complete data with species and accurate locations could aid researchers in the development and efficient implementation of species-specific and

14

september 2013

/roadtoday

effective measures to increase road user and wildlife safety in problem areas. For example, the change of season from winter to spring is a time when road safety professionals remind Canadian drivers to be aware of not only increased traffic volume but also increased wildlife on the roads. With the proper data, drivers could be provided region-specific information about the increased collision risk associated with seasonal movement patterns of wildlife across roads. During the second stage of the study, researchers investigated the feasibility of creating a centralized clearinghouse and developed an action plan for its creation. Availability of data and resource materials, and expertise required to develop key components of the clearinghouse were also studied. It is the hope of researchers to see the creation of a nation-wide wildlife-vehicle collision clearinghouse with data and resources based on a long-term vision. RT

Rand McNally Releases the 33rd Edition of the Motor Carriers’ Road Atlas

The newest edition of Rand McNally’s Motor Carriers’ Road Atlas is now available at travel centers and other retailers, as well as online.

U

pdated annually with new routes and critical state safety information, the new edition includes content uniquely tailored to the business of the over-theroad commercial truck driver. The 2014 edition includes: n Revised state and province maps, including updated mileages in the state mileage guides; n Updated highways showing the latest truck roadways as designated by the Surface Transportation Assistance Act (STAA), also known as “designated” highways; n Coverage of Hazardous Materials Regulations;

n A 22-page mileage directory with more than 40,000 truck-route-specific, city-to-city mileages; n Fully updated state and province charts including more than 400 changes to truck-specific state contacts – such as operating authority contacts, emergency police, and vehicle registration. “It remains the indispensable in-cab resource for commercial truck drivers in North America. Common sense accident avoidance tips

(NC) Imagine if you could program your car to take you where you wanted to go. All you would need to do is just sit back and relax.

A

ccording to the Property and Casualty experts at Desjardins Insurance, the technology is currently being tested. The U.S. military has developed driverless supply trucks and both General Motors and Volvo have announced plans to introduce semi-autonomous vehicles before the end of the decade. All are using the same basic technology — a network of cameras, lasers and sensors that monitor the road and the outside. These are linked through an onboard computer to control the steering and brakes — either to totally operate the car (with the addition of GPS to navigate the roads) or merely to intervene when necessary to avoid potential collisions. This might sound pretty futuristic, but some of this safety system technology is already included in higher-end vehicles. The net effect from the combination of these technologies would be to drastically reduce traffic accidents and consequently lead to a major reduction in auto insurance premiums.

It will still be several years before this technology hits the market, so in the meantime here are some reminders to help you avoid an accident: Speeding: This is one of the leading causes of road accidents. Even if you think you are in total control of your vehicle, respect the speed limit. Remember — you’re not alone on the road and accidents happen without warning. Cellphones at the wheel: Even though you can use your cellphone while driving by way of a hands-free device, it is recommended that you use it as little as possible. Your attention should always be focused on the road, so it’s best to eliminate as many distractions as possible. Drinking and Driving: If you feel you’ve had a few too many, plan on getting home safely by choosing: n A designated driver n To take a cab n Public transit n To ask your hosts if you can stay the night Drowsiness at the wheel: As soon as you feel the first signs of fatigue (frequent yawning, itchy eyes, heavy eyelids, etc.), stop at a safe place and rest for a few minutes. Highway driving and heavy vehicles: Make sure the drivers of heavy vehicles can see you and that you keep a reasonable distance. You must be able to see one of the vehicle’s side mirrors at all times. Keep in mind when passing a heavy vehicle that the driver may not see you when you are beside him/her. If you notice the driver starting to change lanes, accelerate or slow down so that he/she can see you. For more safety suggestions, visit Desjardins Insurance at www.desjardinsgeneralinsurance.com. It’s Not in the Size,

It’s How You Drive!

“DANG PEOPLE!” he yelled. Why don’t they move out of the way if they can’t do the speed limit? Jeff was getting frustrated with traffic and those around him. He had been pushing it from Montreal and now was in one of the most congested cities in Canada, Toronto.

P

eople were driving slow in the fast lane, fast in the slow lane, and being inattentive to traffic in general. Jeff was in a hurry, he had a delivery appointment to meet and the cars around him were not helping him meet that appointment. Although he didn’t like to follow closely to the vehicles in front of him he was getting frustrated and his truck started to drive closer and closer to the vehicle in front of him. What made matters worse for the vehicles in front of him was the fact that he had a truck that had a large nose on it that was all grill. Enhancing that fact was the bug protector he had installed on the front that showed large teeth that looked as though they could eat the car in front of them for lunch. Traffic had been stop and go for a while and was now beginning to move consistently. First 40 kliometres, then 60, then 80, things were moving and Jeff was in even more of a hurry at this point. The

car ahead was doing the speed limit and staying in the middle lane. Jeff wasn’t allowed on the left and traffic was backed up on the right so he stayed where he was, but he was following close. He followed so close that the driver in the car ahead could not see anything but the grill of the truck and those terrifying teeth. Jeff stayed with the car trying to get it to move over to another lane, for he could see freedom from traffic if he could just get past this car. Weighing 80,000 pounds and not enough space between him and the car in front for a dollar bill, he was thinking of his delivery appointment, thinking of his frustration with traffic when it happened, the car in front panicked. Scared to death the driver tried to get out of the way of Jeff’s massive machine, he couldn’t see the lane change properly and almost sideswiped another car. They swerved once, swerved twice, and had almost become part of Jeff’s bumper. Horns, jake brakes, and screaming were all that was heard. Everything came to a screeching halt! As traffic straightened itself out and started to move Jeff pulled over to the side of the road and stopped. What had he been thinking? He didn’t normally drive like that. He almost killed someone. After a few moments he pulled out to finish the trip. This time he left plenty of space. When he returned to the terminal he found a note in his mailbox asking him to see the terminal manager due to a complaint that was called describing a truck with big teeth on it. He had a sinking feeling in his stomach as he walked through to the boss’s office. Following too close is a major problem on the roadways these days. Always leave room around your vehicle based on load, speed, weather, and traffic RT conditions.

The more recent numbers from the NHS (which is voluntary and replaces the long census questionnaire) confirms this challenge confronting the industry and suggests the situation may be even more pronounced. Based on its review of the NHS data, the Conference Board now finds the average truck driver age is 46 years, compared to the average age for all workers in Canada of 41.5 years. Most importantly, the Conference Board says the increase in the average driver age is due to a drop in the share of drivers between 20 and 29 years old. In 2006 11.6 per cent of truck drivers were in that age group but in 2011 this share declined to just 8.8 per cent of the driver population. Also of note is the fact that in 2006 the share of drivers in the 30 to 34 year range was 10 per cent, the same as it was for the total labour force. However, by 2011 8.5 per cent of drivers found themselves in this age group. For the total labour force there was a slight increase to 10.4 per cent. Social Media101

(NC) Canadians are among the most socially engaged populations online. According to a recent report by the Media Technology Monitor, one in three Anglophone Canadians say they check social media feeds daily.

Protecting your privacy online

W

ith more than 18 million Canadians active on Facebook alone every month, considering the content you choose to share and who you share it with is an important factor in protecting your online identity. Here are a few simple ways to manage your privacy settings on Facebook: Choose your audience: Take advantage of the inline audience selector to choose who you want to share with when you are creating a post. The audience selector is located on the bottom right corner of the Composer, and it allows you to choose the audience for each individual piece of content you post. Unfriending on Facebook: If there is someone who you no longer want to share with, unfriend them by selecting the gear icon in the upper right hand corner of the person’s timeline and click ‘Unfriend’. You will still have the option to send a friend request in the future and they won’t receive notification that you have selected to unfriend them. Additionally, you can ‘Block’ another user which not only unfriends them but also prevents them from communicating with you or seeing the content posted on

your timeline. Reporting abusive or offensive content: If you see content on user profiles or pages that you believe violates Facebook’s Community Standards, report the content using the drop down arrow at the corner of nearly every piece of content. Remember that all reports are completely confidential. Once you submit a report, the Facebook team will review it to see if the content should be removed and take the proper course of action. Social Reporting: This tool helps you deal with content that makes you uncomfortable, but doesn’t necessarily violate Facebook’s terms, allowing you to safely send the person that posted the content a message to ask them to remove it. This feature also allows you to reach out to a trusted friend if you need help navigating the situation. Keeping up to date on privacy settings and tools is important when communicating with friends, family and colleagues. To find additional information on how to keep your privacy protected online, visit Facebook’s Safety Centre at https://www.facebook.com/safety. RT

LEAVE A LANE. IT ' S THE LAW.

Police, fire and ambulance personnel are often required to do their work on the shoulders of busy highways. For safety reasons, the law requires all drivers to slow down and proceed with caution when passing an emergency vehicle parked on the side of the highway with its lights activated. If the highway has more than one lane, the law also requires all drivers to move over leaving at least one lane between their vehicle and the parked emergency vehicle, if it can be done safely. Obeying this law will save lives! Violating it can result in a $2,000 fine and three demerit points.

Spellcheck A teacher was taking a writing test of third-grade class students. One of the students asked her how to spell “piranha.” The teacher told him that she was unsure. To her delight, he went to the dictionary to solve his problem. That’s when she overheard another pupil say to him, “Why bother to look it up? She doesn’t know how to spell it anyway.” Ego crusher The plane was only half-full. When an attractive young woman asked if the seat next to mine was free, my male ego soared. Soon we were chatting pleasantly, and she told me it was her first flight. “Mom said to sit next to someone I thought I could trust,” she confessed nervously. “And you look just like my dad.” Surprise gift In an upscale pet-supply store, a customer wanted to buy a red sweater for her dog. The clerk suggested that she bring her dog in for a proper fit. “I can’t do that!” the lady said. “The sweater is a surprise!” Clever kitty A woman is walking in the park when she sees a man playing chess with his cat. She says to the man “I can’t believe what I’m seeing, a cat that plays chess, what a clever animal”. The man replied “Nah lady this cat is not clever at all. I’m beating it 6 games to 1”. @roadtoday

Moles M

oles are essentially small clusters of pigmented cells located in the skin. In most cases, moles are harmless however, it is important to monitor them for changes in appearance as they can become cancerous. Moles develop when skin cells called melanocytes grow in clusters or clumps. These cells are responsible for giving the skin its color. Normally, these cells are spread out evenly throughout the skin. The typical appearance of a mole is a small round brown spot however, they can present in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and colors. Moles can be tan, red bluish or pink. Their shape usually ranges from round to oval. Generally, moles are less than six millimeters in diameter. The texture of moles varies widely as they may be smooth, flat or even raised. Over time the texture of a mole may change. Some moles start off flat but eventually become raised and others disappear. Most moles will appear during childhood and adolescence but can continue to develop into midlife. It is important to seek medical attention if a mole becomes painful or is bleeding. Similarly, if a mole suddenly changes in size, shape or

color it is prudent to see your doctor. Your doctor will perform a detailed history and physical examination. If your doctor is concerned about a mole, he or she may perform a biopsy by removing a sample of tissue from the mole to microscopic examination. In the event that a mole is determined to be cancerous, it must be removed surgically. There are several options for surgery and your doctor will discuss with you which is best option for you. Although it is impossible to prevent the formation of moles, it is still important to protect your skin from the damaging effects

of the sun. There is a significant amount of research that shows the use of sunscreen is very important in the protection of the skin from the sun. Also, try to avoid long exposures to the sun during the mid day when the ultra violet rays are at their strongest. In addition, check your skin regularly to look for changes. Most dermatologists suggest carefully inspecting your skin at least one per month. Remember to include locations such as your scalp, armpits and soles of the feet. Until next month, drive safely. RT
