Bollywood stars dazzle Toronto
The blockbuster Bollywood action film Dabangg edged out tough competition from the social drama My Name is Khan Saturday night and emerged victorious at the International Indian Film Academy Awards in Toronto. The Salman Khan film nabbed six major prizes at the glittering IIFA gala at Toronto’s Rogers Centre, including the final, coveted best picture trophy. My Name is Khan was another major winner on Saturday, earning four trophies, including for its direction, story, lyrics and male lead — Indian film icon Shah Rukh Khan, who portrays a man with Asperger syndrome. Saturday’s colourful awards ceremony moved rapidly back and forth between Hindi and English, with co-hosts Boman Irani and Ritesh Deshmukh entertaining the crowd with comedy skits featuring filmmaker Johar and stars like Shilpa Shetty. Hollywood Oscar-winners Hilary Swank and Cuba Gooding Jr. were on hand as presenters, while
Canadian celebrities in attendance included actors Lisa Ray and Tom Green. Bipasha Basu, Priyanka Chopra and the Deols — actor brothers Bobby and Sunny as well as patriarch Dharmendra — were among those featured in the flashy, highenergy dance performances that peppered the show, which traditionally attracts more than 600 million viewers each year. The evening included special tributes to several Indian film elders, including actor Dharmendra Deol, actor Irfan Khan , playback singer Asha Bhosle, and actress Sharmila Tagore —who urged today’s filmmakers to slow down and return to films “with heart.” Fans greeted all the performers, presenters and winners warmly, but it was Shah Rukh Khan who drew many of the night’s loudest screams. Held for the first time ever in North America, the IIFA extravaganza was lured to Canada by the province of Ontario, which contributed more than $12 million to
fund the festivities. Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty made several highprofile appearances throughout the evening, showing up on the green carpet alongside Shah Rukh Khan, gleefully jumping into a pre-gala interview being conducted with Anupam Kher and receiving a rock-star-like welcome from the Rogers Centre crowd after being introduced by Anil Kapoor. McGuinty also presented the final award of the night: best film. Now in its 12th year, the annual IIFA celebration travels to a new location each year to showcase Indian cinema on the world stage and in an attempt to attract new audiences. Toronto is the first North American host for the awards, which have already visited cities such as London, Johannesburg, Amsterdam, Bangkok and Colombo, Sri Lanka. Saturday night’s award gala followed a series of “buzz events” hosted by four Ontario cities: Toronto, Brampton, Mississauga and Markham in the past month.
Postal service slowly gets back to business Patience is the operative word as Canada Post begins the process of getting mail service up and running again after the government passed back-towork legislation on the weekend to end nearly a month of labour woes. There’s a chance those cheques, as well as bills and flyers many Canadians would
rather do without, will start arriving in the mail as deliveries resumed after a month of postal woes. Backlogged mail is slowly making its way into homes and businesses. The bill imposing a labour contract on the Canadian Union of Postal Workers was passed by the Senate following a 58-hour
filibuster in the House led by the opposition New Democrats. The new law imposes a four-year contract on the workers, specifies pay increases and leaves other disputed issues to binding arbitration. It also provides union members with slightly lower wages than the last offer from the post office.

Brampton Street to be named ‘Raj Kapoor Crescent’ In a warm gesture of welcome to Indian Cinema, the City of Brampton named a street after the ultimate Showman – Raj Kapoor. Introducing a new street into the infrastructure of the city, when constructed it will be named, the ‘Raj Kapoor Crescent’. The legacy of Raj Kapoor has been succeeded by three generations starting with Shammi, Shashi and Raj, the sons of Prithviraj Kapoor. Raj’s sons Randhir, Rishi and Rajiv Kapoor enjoyed success in the industry and his grandchildren Ranbir, Kareena and Karishma Kapoor have subsequently carried on the Kapoor tradition of brilliant artistry and super stardom. Several members of the Kapoor Family were present at the street naming ceremony. The family shared sentiments regarding the retrospective expressing gratitude towards the city at this in-
credible gesture. The Mayor of Brampton Susan Fennell was also present at the cere-
Police name more suspects in Mississauga homicide
Peel Regional Police have issued Canada-wide warrants for two men wanted in connection with the beating death of a 19-year-old man outside a Mississauga restaurant last week. Nitish Khanna, of Toronto, died June 20 outside the Tasty Bite Restaurant, on Torbram Road near Derry Road East. Police said they found a man at the scene suffering from obvious signs of trauma. Though police would not say what the cause of death was, there were media reports Khanna was beaten with a golf club. police said at the time they were searching for five or six men in connection with the incident and said they may have been traveling in a lightcolored four-door sedan. Canada wide warrants for second degree murder have been issued for: - Manmeet Kang, 20, of Toronto. He is described as a South Asian male with a thin build and short black hair. - Manjeet Singh, 19, of Toronto. He is described as a South Asian male with
a medium build and short black hair. Police believe both suspects may have fled to India. Last week police arrested Harsimran Singh Bal, 19, of Brampton, and charged him with one count of second degree murder. He appeared in a Brampton court on June 22. Daljinder Sidhu, 24, of Toronto, was also arrested and charged with second degree murder. He appeared in court on June 24. “The Peel Regional Police Homicide bureau believes that all suspects allegedly responsible for the homicide of Nitish Khanna have been arrested, or are subject to a Canada-wide warrant,” police said in a release. It was the area’s 10th homicide of the year. Anyone who may have information with respect to this incident is asked to call investigators in the Homicide Bureau at (905) 453-2121, ext. 3205.
mony that took place on the main stage of Rose Theatre on the 24th of June, the 2nd day of the Videocon d2h IIFA
Weekend, expressing the city’s commitment to honouring the cinematic genius. A replica of the street sign was also presented to the family. With a career spanning over five decades, Raj Kapoor achieved great success and became the youngest director of his time at age 24 when he opened his own studio, RK Films. Aptly called ‘The Showman’, Raj Kapoor won a large number of awards and was nominated for the ‘Palme D’or’ at the Cannes Film Festival which is the highest honour awarded to competing films at the festival. He was also awarded the ‘Padma Bhushan’ and the ‘Dadasaheb Phalke Award’ for his contributions to Indian Cinema. It is the magnitude of his accomplishments and a symbol of the place he has etched in the hearts of cinema lovers all over the world that this tribute aims to portray.
Ontario NDP unveils party platform The Ontario NDP released the party’s campaign platform on Saturday, with a promise to cut wait times in the province’s hospitals by spending more on long-term care and home care. Entitled “Change that Puts People First,” the platform promises what the NDP calls “smarter investments” in health care. “This plan is to help people who have been feeling ignored by this government,” said Leader Andrea Horwath. The platform includes a promise to provide 2,750 new long-term care beds and one million hours per year of home care. The party says this will stop the logjam caused by patients occupying beds in acute care hospitals because there are no long-term care beds or home care available. The NDP said this will ultimately cut emergency room wait times in half. Wait times vary across the province, but waits of five hours for minor conditions and more than 10 hours for more complex conditions are common. The cost would reach $280 million by the fourth year of the government’s mandate. Other key points of the NDP platform: - A merging of the separate parts of the public hydro system: Hydro One, Ontario Power Generation, Ontario Power Authority and the Independent Electricity System Operator. NDP says it can find savings by doing this. - A hard cap on executive salaries in the public sector at twice the premier’s salary. They say this could save $20 million a year. The NDP also plans to cut the number of consultants in half, a savings they say will be about $125 million a year. - A cut to the small business tax rate to four per cent from the current rate of 4.5 per cent.
- Restoring the corporate tax rate back to what it was in 2009 (14 per cent), while providing a refundable investment tax credit for corporations that create jobs. - A promise to balance the budget by 2017-18, which is the same target date set by the governing Liberals and opposition Progressive Conservatives. But the NDP platform does not contain a detailed fiscal plan. Party officials say they will eventually provide one, but want to wait until after the auditor general reports on the government’s finances next week. - The addition of 50 new “family health-care clinics” to reduce the number of people without a family doctor. The New Democrats have already promised relief to families in the form of taking the HST off hydro and home heating bills, as well as phasing out the provincial portion of the HST off gasoline, freezing transit fares and creating an Ontario pension plan. Taking HST off essentials is expected to save as much as $375 per family. While the party released the bulk of its platform Saturday, it says there will be more announcements and details to come in the months leading up to the Oct. 6 election, including their plans for education, northern Ontario and the environment. This time of year, Canadians are taking advantage of the warmer weather and spending more time outdoors. Aviva Canada is reminding residents that summer is also an opportune time for thieves to strike. Aviva insurance claims data
Province
shows that residential burglaries spike in summer months with a 13 percent, 20 percent and 31 percent higher frequency in June, July and August respectively, than April, which shows the lowest occurrence of residential theft claims. Aviva insurance claims data also indicates that break-ins are more common at the start of the weekend, with Friday showing the greatest incidence at 26% higher than Sunday, the day with the lowest incidence of break-ins. The good news for Canadians is that burglaries over-
all are on the decline, with Aviva data showing an over 42 percent decline in burglary claims between 2003 and 2010. National data from Statistics Canada also shows a 4 percent decline in break and enters between 2008 and 2009. However, while the frequency of this type of crime is on the decline, the value of property being stolen is on the rise. Since 2003, the average dollar value of the articles stolen from burglaries has increased 36 per cent from $4,555 to $6,190 in 2010 - attributable to the popularity of easy to grab valuable items such as laptops, cell phones and video game consoles. Based on 2005 to 2010 Aviva Canada data, Quebec homeowners have the highest frequency of break-ins at two times that of the national average. At just over one third of the national average, the Atlantic Provinces have the lowest frequency of burglary claims.

“Intruders usually enter your home through one of three ways through the basement, forcing entry through a window or door, or simply opening an unlocked door or window,” said Ross. “Homeowners can take simple precautions to prevent an intruder from entering their property.” Aviva Canada suggests these precautions:
• If your windows are old, consider upgrading to newer models with improved locking systems. Ensure all windows are locked when out of the home or overnight; • Make a home look occupied when you’re away. Try parking a car in the driveway, leaving some household lights on, or asking a neighbour to collect mail and
newspapers; • Install a security device with a loud alarm or flashing lights. Some alarms contact authorities directly when they have been activated; • Use deadbolt locks on all doors, and when moving into a new property have the locks changed.

Wait time to see Canadian doctors grows
It’s taking longer for patients with an urgent condition to see a doctor, a new survey suggests. The Canadian Medical Association, the College of Family Physicians of Canada and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada released their findings on the opinions of doctors, medical residents and medical students on Monday. In spite of improvements in some areas, doctors are finding it harder to meet the changing health-care needs of
the growing number of Canadians living with chronic and complex medical conditions, the survey suggested. About 58 per cent of family physicians and general practitioners say they’re accepting new patients, with 18 per cent saying they have no restrictions and 41 per cent saying they accept some. People in Quebec might have the easiest time. In that province\, 66 per cent of practices are fully or partially open. Alberta had the lowest propor-
Health Canada reviewing stop-smoking drug Champix (varenicline tartrate) Health Canada is informing Canadians of an ongoing review of the smoking-cessation aid Champix (the brand name for the prescription drug varenicline tartrate) and the possibility of a slightly increased risk of heartrelated side effects in patients who have cardiovascular disease. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently communicated its findings from a review of new data from a clinical trial involving 700 smokers with cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular disease is a broad term covering any disease that affects the heart and/or blood vessels. The risk for patients with cardiovascular disease taking Champix was found to be 2%, compared to 1% for those taking no drug. Health Canada is evaluating this and all other available information. Champix is considered an effective smoking-cessation aid when used
as part of a support program. Smoking by itself is a major known risk factor for cardiovascular disease and heartrelated events. Heart-related side effects have occurred rarely in clinical trials for Champix. Reports have included chest pain, irregular heartbeat, heart attack and stroke. This information is included in the current prescribing information for Champix. Patients who have questions or concerns about their Champix therapy should speak to their healthcare professional. Health Canada reminds consumers who are thinking of quitting smoking to talk with a health care professional about the specific risks and benefits of all smoking cessation options to help determine the most appropriate method for them.
tion of practices willing to accept new patients at 52 per cent. For those who do have a family doctor, they may be waiting longer to see one. When physicians were last surveyed in 2007, 65 per cent of family doctors saw urgent care patients within one day, compared with 61 per cent in 2010. For specialists, the urgent care wait rose from 32 per cent four years ago to 37 per cent last year. The doctors surveyed pointed to increasingly complex patient caseloads (72 per cent), chronic conditions (63 per cent), increasing administrative work and paperwork (61 per cent), aging population (59 per cent) and increasing patient expectations (58 per cent) as reasons for greater demands on their time. On average, a physician’s work week was 51.4 hours in 2010, compared with 51.7 hours in 2007. The amount of time spent on direct patient care is decreasing and indirect patient care, such as completing charts and making phone calls, is on the rise. The size of family practices seems

Children’s drowning deaths spike in Ontario A review of drowning deaths in Ontario last summer found a “disturbing” spike in the number of deaths involving young children. More than twice as many children under age five drowned in 2010 than in the previous two years — a total of 13 last year compared to five in 2008 and 2009. However, the report from the chief coroner’s office says
last year’s total number of drowning deaths — including all ages — was similar to previous years. The review team examined 89 drownings that occurred between May and September of last year. Thirteen of the deaths involved children under five — and 85 per cent of the 89 victims were male. The review team made 12

At the same time, doctors are increasingly using electronic media and technology. About 39 per cent of respondents have electronic records, up 13 per cent since 2007. More than half of family doctors, 55 per cent, and 44 per cent of specialists said they refer patients to websites to get information on diseases, treatments and patient support. The survey also looked at how physicians are paid, professional development such as reading peer-reviewed journals, and time spent in on-call duties. In 2009, Canada had about 68,000 active physicians working in the country, according to the Canadian Institute for Health Information. Police Warning Residents of a Fraudulent Credit Scam Investigators from the Peel Regional Police Fraud Bureau would like to alert residents, specifically those newly arrived to Canada, about two ongoing scams that involves obtaining credit.
This scam involves brokers who target new immigrants in two ways. First, the brokers take advantage of new immigrants simply attempting to establish credit in Canada. Second, the brokers also target new immigrants, promising to assist them with their immigration status in Canada, who require credit in order to finance this “assistance”. In both instances, the brokers create fictitious employment histories for their clients and subsequently obtain credit in their client’s names. Once the credit has been obtained, the broker will take the majority of the money, leaving the client with little or no money and the legal responsibility to pay back the loan. On occasion, when the requests for payment arrive, the brokers will attempt to declare bankruptcy on behalf of their clients, without advising their clients of the legal ramifications of such a declaration. On the client’s
next attempt to obtain credit, the declaration of bankruptcy and/or their poor credit payment history can prevent them from obtaining any further credit. Residents should be familiar with the rules and methods of operation for Canadian financial institutions, and how credit is typically granted. They should also familiarize themselves with how legitimate financial advisers and brokers operate. Peel Police would like to remind residents that the victim is responsible for credit obtained in their name, and are held accountable for the losses regardless of how aware, or unaware, they might have been. Those residents new to Canada should be cognizant of the proper way to obtain credit and research the financial advisers they choose to deal with. Remember, if you are offered something that seems too good to be true, it most likely will not be true.
Peel Police would like to offer the following general suggestions to protect you from being defrauded during your financial transactions: • Be extremely careful of who you give your personal information to. Don’t hesitate to question the authenticity of this individual. • Treat your social insurance number and birth certificate as you would any other item of value and store them in a safe place. Further, don’t carry your social insurance card and birth certificate on your person, unless absolutely necessary. • Carry only the credit cards you need and cancel the ones you don’t. • Shred your personal information and credit cards after they expire. • Carefully check your monthly statements for any unauthorized or missing transactions. • Protect your debit/credit card’s PIN as you enter it onto a PIN-pad. • Don’t tell anyone your credit/
debit card’s PIN, and don’t write it down in a convenient location that anyone can find. • Don’t use your birth date or house address number as your PIN. • Don’t leave receipts where they are easily accessible, or throw out financial information before making it unreadable. Consider investing in a shredder. • Before you put your personal and financial information on any social network site, remember that the potential exists for these sites to be hacked and your information stolen. Anyone who believes that they may have been defrauded by a credit or financial broker in this manner, or anyone with information related to this type of fraud, is asked to contact the Peel Regional Police Fraud Bureau at (905) 453-2121, ext. 3335.

Godhra train carnage: 11 get death, 20 to serve life term
Ahmedabad - Eleven convicts in the Godhra train burning case were handed down death sentence while 20 others were given life imprisonment by a special court in the 2002 incident that left 59 ‘kar sevaks’ dead and triggered riots which claimed over 1,200 lives in Gujarat. Considering the case as “rarest of rare”, Special Judge PR Patel pronounced death penalty for 11 out of the 31 convicted in the case while 20 others were sentenced to life imprisonment. “The court after looking into their active role in the conspiracy and setting afire of the S6 coach of Sabarmati Express train near Godhra gave death penalty to 11 persons,” public prosecutor JM Panchal said. The court also slapped punishment on them under various other sections, which will be concurrent with their life term. The prosecution had sought death sentence for all the 31 convicts, saying that it was a heinous act. On February 22, the court had convicted all the 31 while accepting the prosecution’s contention that there was a conspiracy behind the incident and convicted 31 under various sections of the IPC like 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy). They were also convicted under IPC Section 147, 148 (rioting with deadly weapons), 323, 324,325,326 (causing hurt), 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on religious grounds), various sections of the Indian Railways Act, Prevention of Damages to Public Property Act and Bombay Police Act. The court had acquitted 63 others in the coach burning incident that happened near Godhra railway station. Defence counsel IM Munshi said the convicts will definitely appeal against the punishment
awarded to them. Fol l o w ing the Godhra train burning incident on February 27, 2002, large scale c o m munal violence h a d broken out in var ious parts of Gujarat in which over 1,200 persons, mainly belonging to the minority community, died. Disagreeing with the judgment, Munshi said, “The court has not believed the first theory which said that the inflammable substance was poured from outside. The court has agreed to the second theory that the accused persons had entered the coach by cutting the vestibule between the S-6 and S-7 coaches and poured the petrol in it.” He said the case of conspiracy had come forth almost four months after the incident. On February 22, the court had accepted the theory of criminal conspiracy behind the burning
of the S-6 coach of Sabarmati Express carrying ‘kar sevaks’ returning from Ayodhya based on scientific evidence, statement of witnesses and circumstantial and documentary evidence placed on record. The trial conducted inside the Sabarmati Central Jail here began in June 2009 with the framing of charges against 94 accused in the carnage. In all, 253 witnesses were examined during the trial and over 1,500 documentary evidences were presented before the court by the Gujarat police. There were a total of 134 accused in the case, out of which 14 were released due to lack of evidence, five were juvenile, five died during proceedings of over nine years and 16 are absconding.

Fraud Bureau Warning Residents of Computer Scam The Peel Regional Police Fraud Bureau would like to make residents aware of a computer scam that has recently re-emerged within the Region. The scam involves suspects phoning victims and identifying themselves as technicians from Microsoft. They then advise the victims that their computer has been infected with a virus and that, for a small fee, a Microsoft technician could remotely access their computer and eradicate the virus. If the victim agrees to this, he/she is directed to a website where the suspects gain remote access to the victim’s computer. Once access is gained, a virus or other form of malware is possibly installed on the computer.
The victim is then told that their computer has been fixed and is directed to another website, to enter payment information. Having obtained this payment information, the suspects are potentially able to compromise the victim’s debit/credit cards and transfer money without the victim’s consent. Microsoft Canada would like to state that they do not call their customers with offers of virus removal for a service fee. If you have been a victim of this scam, please report the incident to the nearest Peel Police Division or Community Station. Peel Police are also asking residents, who have received these phone
calls, to contact the Canadian AntiFraud Centre to report the incident. Peel Police would also like to offer the following safety suggestions, when it comes to the internet and your computer: • Perform a virus and malware scan of your computer on a regular basis. A variety of commercially available programs are available, along with free programs such as the free virus scanner: Microsoft Security Essentials. • Remember to update your protection programs. An anti-virus program is not a one-time purchase. Most programs require regular updates, possibly with additional fees involved.
• Contact Equifax and TransUnion on an annual basis, to make sure there are no unauthorized entries on your credit history. • Education is the key to the prevention of this type of scam. To learn more about this scam, and other scams affecting Canadians, residents are encouraged to visitwww.antifraudcentre.ca Anyone who has any information regarding this fraud is urged to contact the Fraud Bureau at (905) 4532121, ext. 3335. Anonymous tips can also be left by calling Peel Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), or by visiting www.peelcrimestoppers.ca.
Starting July 1, drivers can tow recreational vehicles (RVs) if they have a full class G licence. This will make it easier for Ontarians to travel this summer and save RV owners about $200 in initial licence costs. Until now, Ontario drivers have needed a class A licence to tow RVs that weigh more than 4,600 kg. With this change, Ontarians can tow and operate RVs with a full class G licence as long as:
• The combined weight of the motor vehicle and RV is not more than the current 11,000 kg limit • The RV is attached to the motor vehicle by a fifth wheel hook-up • Only one vehicle is being towed • The RV meets Transport Canada manufacturing standards • The RV is being towed for personal use only. These changes will make it easier for Ontarians to travel with RVs, sup-
port the province’s RV industry and promote tourism, while keeping our roads the safest in North America. QUICK FACTS • Drivers must have a full G licence, not a G1 or G2. • This change aligns Ontario with driver’s licence requirements for RVs in 41 U.S. states and six Canadian provinces and territories. • This change for towed RVs is also consistent with the current re-
quirements for operators of motor homes. • The Ontario Recreation Vehicle Dealers Association will provide voluntary orientation and training to the purchasers and owners of large, towed recreational vehicles to further support road safety. • The number of fatalities from motor vehicle collisions in Ontario was the lowest ever recorded, according to the most recent statistics.

Project generosity: Teaching children to give By Melissa Yue (NC)—Life experience has taught us that, as the saying goes, it really is better to give than to receive. Generous individuals make friends easily, and it’s not only about giving gifts and money. Giving of your time can mean so much to a loved one or child who is craving your attention. This summer, make the most of your time off to grow the giving nature in your children. Here are some ideas to get started: Birthdays with a twist. Is your child celebrating a birthday this month? Instead of trying to compete with the Joneses,
ask your child if he or she would like to receive one large gift and have everyone donate the money they would have spent to a charity your child chooses. Though there may be some initial resistance, explain how a few birthday dollars can help another child in need, protect a child from disease, or plant a vegetable garden to feed a whole family. Christian Children’s Fund of Canada’s gift catalogue can give you some ideas (www.ccfcanada. ca/Gifts). Eye–opening experiences. Volunteer as a family to: pack boxes at a food bank; sing or
perform at a senior’s home; or visit a country where your children can see poverty first–hand. The experience is guaranteed to soften their hearts for people with real needs. Lead by example. Be sure to practice what you preach. You can’t expect your children to share their candy with their friends if you always make a fuss about I.O.U.s and splitting the bill. Invest in your friendships and be willing to help family members out when they need it. Your child will learn the value of giving to others without expecting anything in return.
How to choose a greener lawn mower (NC)—You might not realize it, but that old gas mower sitting in your shed is a major contributor to summertime air pollution. In fact, running an old gas-powered lawn mower for one hour can produce as much air pollution as driving a new car 550 kilometres. There are green choices when it comes to lawn care. What you use comes down to the size of your yard and personal preference. The greenest choice by far is a reel mower powered by you. Ideal for small, flat lawns, these simple and quiet mowers release no pollution into the atmosphere. You’ll get your exercise and achieve top notch results with a durable Craftsman reel mower from Sears. For up to half an acre, an electric or battery powered mower is a great green choice. Compared to a gas mow-
er, they are cleaner and quieter plus without the need for fuel, tune-ups and oil filters, you will spend less money on maintenance. Sears offers both corded and cordless options. With a cordless electric mower you can move around the yard with ease but running time is limited to the chargeable battery power. The corded electric mower has unlimited running time but will only reach as far as the extension cord will allow. Again, the choice depends on preference and yard size. Gas powered mowers are ideal for large lawns, but they release pollutants into the atmosphere. For a greener gas mower choose the Craftsman 22” front-wheel lawn mower with the Eco Plus technology engine. These mowers emit 38% less exhaust emissions than current Canadian standards.
Skin survival tips in the summer sun
(NC)—After long months of being bundled up against the cold, Canadians just want to throw their bodies into the sun the moment it feels warm enough. We sometimes forget that the sun’s rays north of the 49th parallel can be just as powerful as those on a Caribbean beach. With hotels from coast to coast, Econo Lodge and Comfort Inn staff frequently welcome guests who’ve underestimated the power of the Canadian sun, so they offer the following healthy skin tips: • Sunscreen is essential, even on cloudy days. Pay attention to the UV index in the weather report and slather it on accordingly. • Try to avoid direct sunlight during peak hours either side of noon. • Drink plenty of liquids – your skin is an organ and needs to be kept hydrated • Moisturize - even if you’ve worn sunscreen all day, the sun can dry out your skin. Use a quality moisturizer to keep it supple and hydrated.

Five essential pool maintenance tips (NC)—Proper pool maintenance doesn’t require a major investment of time. In fact, improper maintenance can be much more timeconsuming and reduce the time you have to enjoy a refreshing summertime dip. Here are a few tips to ensure a safe, clean, fun swimming season, brought to you by Comfort Inn and Quality hotels, which play host to indoor and outdoor swimming pools coast to coast. Open up: Remove, clean, dry and store the pool cover. Reconnect the pump and filter, raise the water level and inspect ladders, diving boards and other parts for winter damage. Shocking solution: Adding
extra chlorine – three to five times the normal dose –will kill off pool contaminants that survive routine chlorination. The process is used to counteract a buildup of contaminants when the chlorine has been reduced, as over winter or following heavy use. Test Kit: Every pool owner should frequently test the waters for chlorine and pH levels at the bare minimum. Keeping things in
balance means your swimmers can enjoy the water without fear of irritation or contamination. The right balance helps keep equipment working smoothly too. Keep the heat: Covering your pool with a thermal blanket at night or when it is not in use helps retain heat and prevents debris from collecting in the water. Maintenance pays: Whether you do it yourself or employ a pool service, ensuring that your pump and filters are clean and water balanced will save money in the long run, and let you enjoy a worry-free summer of swimming.

(NC)—In case you hadn’t noticed, the cost of living is on the rise. From the grocery cart to your gas tank and everywhere in between, prices for day–to– day goods are near record highs. While you can’t do much about the price of wheat or crude oil, there’s one area of your home where a few quick fixes can translate into real savings: your water bill. Follow these 10 tips and you could shave as much as 20 per cent off your annual water bill: 1. Make sure your dishwasher and washing machine are fully loaded before pressing ‘start’. By running fewer and fuller washes, you’ll use less water and energy. 2. If you don’t already have one, install a low–flow showerhead. 3. Install a low–flow toilet.
Or place a pop bottle filled with sand or water in your toilet tank. You’ll use less water every time you flush. 4. Stop washing your car at home. Many people think it saves water but it doesn’t. Most car washes have water recycling systems and cost just a few dollars per visit. 5. Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth or shaving. 6. Check for (and fix) leaky taps and faucets. Even a small leak can waste thousands of litres of water per year. 7. Attach a rain barrel to your downspout to collect water for plants, flowers, etc. 8. Avoid using your toilet as a garbage can. Flushing a cigarette butt, wad of gum or a tissue can use as much as 14 litres of water (depending on the age of your

Tight security arrangements for Amarnath yatra More than 10,000 security force personnel have been deployed for the annual Amarnath yatra to the south Kashmir cave shrine, officials said. Around 5,000 paramilitary CRPF and an equal number of state police personnel have been deployed for security of the pilgrims along the traditional Pahalgam route and the shorter Baltal route, the officials said. Although there are no intelligence inputs to suggest any militant threat to the annual pilgrimage, the officials said they did not want to take any chance. Barring few incidents at the peak of militancy in late 1990s and early 2000s, the Amarnath yatra has generally been conducted smoothly over the years. Security force personnel have been deployed all along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway and between Khanabal and Pahalgam in Anant-
nag district and Srinagar and Baltal in Ganderbal district, they said. Forces have also been deployed in strength at all halting stations like Panjtarni, Sheshnag and Chandanwari, besides the perimeter of the 3880metre high cave shrine. The first batch of nearly 2,000 pilgrims, which left from Jammu base camp on Tuesday, will be starting their onward journey towards the cave shrine from Pahalgam and Baltal from Wednesday. More than 2.5 lakh pilgrims have registered for the pilgrimage this year but the number is lesser compared to previous years. However, officials said the number of pilgrims will increase during the course of 45-day pilgrimage. The yatra will conclude on 13th August coinciding with Raksha Bandhan.

Time to ‘forgive’ and build a new India: P Chidambaram tells Sikhs
Home Minister P Chidambaram said the country has moved on since the “tragic incident” and that it was time to “forgive” and build a new India. “It is time that we forgive and move on to build a new India where every citizen irrespective of faith has equal place,” he said, addressing a function in Delhi to fe-

I am happy that I played a small and humble part in removing 142 names from the Black List,” the Home Minister said. In a significant decision, the government had removed from its “blacklist” the names of 142 wanted terrorists and their associates, including the heads of various Sikh extremist groups. Noting that government was would initiate all possible steps to address grievances of the Sikh community, Chidambaram said government would issue orders “shortly” to help the Sikhs who have returned from Afghanistan following violence in the neighbouring country.
Delhi on Sunday had its date with South-West Monsoon, three days ahead of its normal onset in the city bringing cheers to citizens reeling under severe hot and humid conditions. The seasonal rains started only on July five last year after a delay of a
week. The earliest onset of monsoon over Delhi during the past 30 years was on 15th June, 2008 and while the most delayed onset was on 26th July, 1987. China releases human rights activist Hu Jia
One of China’s most prominent prisoners of conscience, Hu Jia, returned home on Sunday after completing a jail term for subversion but looked likely to be muzzled along with other top dissidents. The human rights activist’s release after more than three years in prison comes after out-
spoken artist Ai We i w e i emerged in Beijing last week f r o m nearly t h r e e months in police custody amid a governm e n t crackdown on dissent. H u is widely expected to be hit with the same strict curbs as those applied to Ai and a range of other activists and rights lawyers who have apparently been ordered to keep quiet to gain their freedom. Hu returned to his home outside Beijing early morning on Sunday, his wife and fellow
activist Zeng Jinyan said on Twitter. Hu, 37, was jailed on subversion charges in April 2008 just ahead of the Beijing Olympics after angering the ruling Communist Party through his years of bold campaigning for civil rights, the environment, and AIDS sufferers. Ai’s detention had sparked an international outcry and his recent release has been widely seen as an attempt by Chinato defuse criticism during a visit by Premier Wen Jiabao toEurope now under way. Hu’s release at the end of his prison term, however, was long expected. Aside from his jail sentence, Hu also faces one year of “deprivation of political rights” essentially a ban on political activities, and Zeng has indicated he would be making no public statements.

25 killed in b mb attacks in Nigeria
25 killed in bomb attacks in Nigeria Suspected Islamists have hurled bombs and fired on a beer garden in the northern Nigerian city of Maiduguri, killing at least 25 people and injuring about 30, police and witnesses said. The two men came on motorbikes and sped away after the shock attack late Sunday, they told a news agency on
telephone from Maiduguri, capital of northeastern Borno State. “The attackers, believed to be Boko Haram members, threw bombs and fired indiscriminate gun shots on a packed tavern at Dala Kabompi neighbourhood, killing at least 25 people and seriously injuring around 30 others,” a police superintendent said. An army captain, also
speaking on condition of a n o n y m i t y, said: “It will be difficult to say with precision the number of casualties but it can’t be less then two dozen.” Emmanuel Okon, who sells roast beef on the fringes of the tavern, said: “I just heard a loud bang followed by sporadic shootings and plumes of black smoke filled the area with people screaming and running in all directions. The attack came on the day a joint military and police task force was launched to combat the spate of bomb and shootand-run attacks by sect members in the city.

Get ready for a road trip!
(NC)—After months of fighting snow, wind and ice, Canadians are gearing up for summer road trips. The key to a successful trip is all about the planning and preparation – from your packing list to your roadside travel kit. Here are some tips to make sure your summer road trip is the best it can be: Schedule a Full Service Check-up Avoid the disappointment of spending your vacation at a roadside repair shop by taking the necessary precautions beforehand. A vehicle tune-up and fluid top-up two weeks prior should leave enough time if there are any necessary repairs. Chances are during the winter months, you or your mechanic added more antifreeze to your radiator’s coolant mix to prevent it from freezing. In excessive amounts, antifreeze can actually reduce cooling efficiency, resulting in higher engine temperatures. Have your mechanic check the concentration and adjust or change the coolant if required. Choose the right fuel Protect your engine by filling your tank with a high-quality gasoline. “Gasoline primarily contains carbon and hydrogen molecules, and combustion can
June 29 - July 12, 2011 create a residue, called “gunk”, which is a build-up of carbon particles on critical engine parts,” explains Ken Mitchell, an engineer from Shell Canada. “All three grades of Shell gasoline contain a Nitrogen Enriched Cleaning System which helps clean-up the performancerobbing gunk left by lower quality gasolines.” Pack a travel kit Make sure your bases are covered by packing the following essentials: • A rechargeable flashlight • A first aid kit including a blanket • Non-perishable food and water • Flares and a jumper cable • Extra fluids like transmission oil, washer and brake fluid • A pen, paper and disposable camera in case of an accident • The contact numbers for your insurance agency and your roadside service provider Wherever your epic summer drive takes you – the Cabot Trail, the TransCanada through the Rockies or through waving wheat fields of the prairies – these tools can help make sure that summer of 2011 delivers a road trip with the right kind of memories.
What it really means to be Canadian (NC)—When you think of adjectives to describe what Canadians are like, you might come up with words like: humourous, passive, polite, friendly, or bland. Whether any of that is true, one trait we can take pride in is our generosity. According to the World Giving Index, Canada is the third most generous country in the world out of 153 countries. Canadians donate both of their money and their time, contributing thousands of volunteer hours to help those in need. It is evident Canadians have impacted millions of lives around the world. On July 1st, show your Canadian spirit with these activities that help others: Visit a retirement centre. Get a
group of friends together and put on a show. If you can juggle, sing, dance, or make people laugh, use your skill to brighten someone else’s day. Even if you don’t know anyone in particular at the centre, the time you sacrificed to pay a visit will speak volumes to the elderly. Host a neighbourhood potluck. Swap food, stories, and experiences as you get to know the people and needs in your immediate community. Serve at a soup kitchen or food bank. Soup kitchens and food banks often have a rush of volunteers at Thanksgiving and Christmas, but Canada Day usually isn’t very popular. Don the apron and plastic gloves, leave the diva attitude at the door, and help alle-

Home-buying 101 ( N C ) — Buying your first house can be exciting and ner ve-wracking. With so many factors to consider before you sign the dotted line, here are some tips and suggestions to help get you started. Can you actually afford a house? Although interest rates are low now, it’s important to remember that they may increase in the future. Typically, mortgages are amortized over 25 years and are offered in six-month, five- or even ten-year terms. Be honest with yourself about what you can afford because your life and financial priorities will change. Securing a down payment Experts advise that prospec-
tive home owners should put a down payment of up to 20 per cent of the house’s value. One option is to borrow against your RRSP. Each person is eligible to withdraw $25,000 or $50,000 per couple. If you haven’t enough in your account, it’s possible to take a top-up RRSP loan to reach the right amount. Once you have bought your home, you’ll have 15 years to repay the amount to your RRSP. Another option is to put down 10 per cent and to accept a higher mortgage loan insurance amount. Fixed or variable? A fixed interest rate offers stability and predictability, but you lose out on lower interest rates should they become available. The payments with variable interest rates also remain constant but there is the risk that interest rates may go up. This means more goes to your interest payment and less to your prin-
cipal. If you can’t choose between the two options, a split mortgage offers you the best of both worlds. “Another idea for first time home buyers is to consider qualifying for a pre-authorized mortgage,” said Nicolas Frechette, senior advisor of mortgage financing offer management with Desjardins Group. “This process evaluates your financial situation to determine the maximum financing amount for which you are eligible. That way when you start looking at houses you will know which ones fit your budget.” Other fees to consider • Inspection fees: If you decide to purchase an existing home, this detailed report will focus attention on any hidden defects that will require repair in the short- and long-term. • Appraisal fees: Your financial institution will request that an appraiser evaluate and determine the true value
of the property you wish to acquire. • Legal fees: You will be responsible for hiring a lawyer who will prepare, sign and register the various legal documents related to the purchase of the property. • Mortgage loan insurance: If you do not have a minimum 20 per cent down payment, you must obtain mortgage loan insurance from the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation or Genworth Financial Canada. • Additional taxes and fees: Transfer tax, property tax, school taxes, electricity and natural gas bills are due at sale closing. More information about mortgages is available from your financial advisor. Or for immediate answers and mortgage calculators, visit Desjardins Group online at www.newscanada. com

Keep your vacation stress free (NC)—With our long weekends and beautiful summer weather, many Canadians take the opportunity to hit the road for a getaway. While you are excited to escape, whether it is for a week or a weekend, be sure not to overlook the things that may ruin your trip and cause it to end abruptly, such as a break– in at home or a car collision. According to Allstate Insurance Company of Canada data, June and September are the two summer months that see the highest collision rates. In the unfortunate event you do get into a collision, you will want to know you are properly protected whether you are renting a vehicle or using your own. “If you are renting a vehicle, check with your insurance agent to guarantee you are properly covered,” said Eric Michalko of Allstate Canada. “If not, buy more insurance.” While you are away, don’t let your vacation be cut short by a break–in at home. Take the time before you depart to make sure you don’t leave your home an open invitation to thieves. “Ask a trusted neighbour to collect your mail and keep an eye on your place while you are away and remember to be social media savvy,” said Michalko. “Don’t post that you are going away on any social media network, such as Facebook or Twitter, and wait until you get back to post any pictures.” More information on how to protect your vehicle and home can be found at goodhandsadvice.ca.

Erratic Saina ends runner-up Indian Test squad at Indonesia Open for Eng to be picked on 2nd July
A profligate defending champion Saina Nehwal faltered at the final hurdle, failing to complete the hat-trick of titles at the Indonesia Open Super Series after losing to Chinese world number three Yihan Wang in the final in Jakarta on Sunday.
Fourth seed Saina, who won the title in 2009 and 2010, frittered away a match point en route to a 21-12 21-23 14-21 loss to her equally error-prone rival. In a contest which lasted a little over an hour, Saina gained from Wang’s numerous errors of judgments, misplaced shots and her own trademark smashes to clinch the opening game rather easily. Wang committed 12 unforced errors in the opening game. But the Chinese recovered in the second game and although the number of unforced errors did not improve, Saina helped her rival’s cause by trying too hard to hurry up the proceedings. The result was 10 unforced errors for the Indian, who also struggled to connect the smashes that more often than not had bailed her out in crunch situations.
Wang was quick to pounce on the chance and took 11-8 lead at the change of ends. The Chinese was cruising along 17-14 before Saina smashed her way back again to make it 20-19. The Indian had a match point in hand but Wang fought back to make the scoreline 21-21 before clinching the game 23-21. The shift in momentum was evident in the third game and though the two players went neck-and-neck till 9-9, it was clear that Wang had gained in confidence while Saina’s game began to fall apart. Saina’s stock smashes were not getting the desired result as Wang showed better judgment on the baseline. In fact, Wang managed nine smash winners compared to Saina’s two in the deciding game.
The Indian squad for the four-Test series against England, which is the first part of their forthcoming tour, will be picked on 2nd July, Cricket Board sources said. “The squad would be picked in Chennai on July 2,” BCCI sources said on Thursday. Incidentally, 2nd July is the last day of the scheduled second India-West Indies Test in the current series and would be played at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. Two members -- Surendra Bhave and Narendra Hirwani-of the five-man selection committee, headed by Krish Srikkanth, are currently in the West Indies watching the Test series and are expected to join the discussions via tele-conference along with skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and coach Duncan Fletcher. The Indians conclude their visit to the Caribbean w i t h t h e third a n d final Te s t scheduled at Roseau from 6th to 10th July. Quite a few key members of the Indian team that won the World Cup on 2nd April are missing from the touring party in the West Indies. Senior batsman Sachin Tendulkar had opted out of the entire tour to spend time with his family while regular openers Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir, as well as pace spearhead Zaheer Khan, pulled out
due to injuries. Also missing from the West Indies tour were Yuvraj Singh, who was indisposed, but has declared himself fit for selection for the England visit, and S Sreesanth, who was also on the injured list of players with a right elbow problem. Ashish Nehra, who got injured during the semifinal of the World Cup at Mohali against Pakistan, also missed the tour to the Caribbean islands. World Cup winning-captain Dhoni skipped the Twenty20 and five-match ODI series before joining the team in the West Indies for the ongoing Test contest. India start their England tour on 15th July with a threeday warm-up game against Somerset county at Taunton before taking on the hosts in the Test rubber. The Tests are to be held at Lord’s (July 2125), Nottingham (July 2 9 Au g ut 2 ) , Birmingh a m ( Au g u s t 10-14), and Kennington Oval (August 18-22). A two-day tour game against Northants is sandwiched between the second and third Test matches. After the Tests, the Indians would stay back and play a one-off Twenty20 international and five ODIs against the hosts between 31st August and 16th September.
When golfing with the boss behave like a pro
(NC)—Work is tough, and climbing the corporate ladder requires overcoming obstacles: competitive coworkers, demanding clients and occasionally sand, water and trees. Many professionals will be asked to join their boss and clients for a round of golf this summer, and whether you play like a champion or rarely lift a club here are some tips about how to act on the course from Steve Stradiotto, a brewing specialist at Molson Coors and creator of Molson Canadian 67 Sublime, and CPGA professional Conor O’Shea. Prepare for the round like it is a
meeting Call the pro shop ahead of time to confirm the dress code. If you need to rent clubs make sure they have some available. If you know your boss and clients are inclined to indulge at the 19th hole then plan ahead and offer to be the designated driver; being responsible will be rewarded. The warm-up Always visit the driving range. Start with some simple chipping and half swing shots - you’ll establish a reliable tempo, warm up gradually and connect well with the ball.
Skip the shop talk Don’t start talking about work unless your boss does. He/she might want to know you a little better, learn about your favourite band, sports team or local pub. Great putting is about speed control Focus on getting the ball to slow down as it nears the hole. The slower the ball is rolling the more likely it will be to fall in. A good rule is to take the putter back and through the same distance, one inch for every foot on a flat putt.
Beating your boss? If it comes down to the last hole and you’re tied - Make the putt. And if you do sink it, you should buy the first round of beer. One good round deserves another In Canada, having a beer on the course is often part of the experience. If your foursome wants to enjoy a round during the round, stick to a light beer like Molson Canadian 67 or Molson Canadian 67 Sublime and help keep your drive straight and your game in control.

Lee-Hesh ousted from Wimbledon men’s doubles Indian veterans Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi blew away a strong start to make a shock exit from the men’s doubles event of the Wimbledon championships as they lost the second round 6-2 3-6 7-6 (1) 4-6 to Arnaud Clement and Lukas Dlouhy in London on Saturday.
The third seed ‘Indian Express’ pair dominated the opening set but allowed their unseeded rivals to make a strong comeback. The defeat means that Paes and Bhupathi will now try to win their first Grand Slam together after rejoining forces at US Open, the last tennis major of the season. The French-Czech pair broke the Indians twice -third and ninth games -- in the second set to draw parity and then nosed ahead by winning the third set via tie-breaker. The fourth set could not have started on a worse note for the Indians as they dropped
serve in the very first game. That mini lead was enough for Clement and Dlouhy, a former partner of Paes, and it provided further impetus to the momentum gained by them and they closed it out easily. The defeat of Paes and Bhupathi leaves Somdev Devvarman the only Indian in the men’s doubles draw. Somdev, along with Japanese Kei Nishikori, has already moved to the second round. Rohan Bopanna has also crashed out with Pakistani partner Aisam-ul-haq Quershi.

Mexico stun USA to claim Gold Cup
Mexico football team have claimed their second straight Gold Cup beating the USA in stunning comeback fashion. Michael Bradley got things started for Team America in the 8th minute as the home side enjoyed the early exchanges. Landon Donovan then went on to double that advantage some 15 minutes later with an excellent effort in the 23rd minute. Pablo Barrera, though, helped the Mexicans steady the ship getting one back right be-
fore the half-hour mark. The West Ham winger would eventually get the go-ahead third goal, but the final strike of the day belonged to Giovani Dos Santos. Goalie Tim Howard was not quite able to claw the ball away leaving the attacker to finish sublimely. The final score was 4-2, which gives Mexico the right to play in the 2013 Confederations Cup in Brazil, a year before the World Cup.
Vettel shrugs off doubts, coasts to win in Valencia Defending Formula One world champion Sebastian Vettel won the European Grand Prix on Sunday to extend his lead in the overall standings with his sixth win in eight races. His 16th career victory made him the first man to finish first or second in the opening eight races of a season in the history of the Formula One world championship. The 23-year-old German dispelled any thoughts that his last lap error in Canada a fortnight ago which cost him victory would have an adverse effect on him as he coasted home in his Red Bull to beat Spain’s Fernando Alonso in a Ferrari. Vettel’s Australian teammate Mark Webber was
third. Vettel’s victory saw him open up a huge 77-points gap in this year’s title race. He now has 186 points after eight of the season’s 19 events, ahead of nearest rival Briton Jenson Button on 109. It was just the fourth time in Formula One history that all the drivers finished the race and first time since the Italian Grand Prix in 2005. Great Britain’s 2008 champion Lewis Hamilton for McLaren honoured his pledge to restrain his daredevil style and finish the race, taking fourth place. Brazilian Felipe Massa in the second Ferrari and Briton Jenson Button, in the second McLaren, finished fifth and sixth.

So Salman has reportedly told Colors, the channel that airs Bigg Boss, that he won’t be able to host Bigg Boss 5 this year. Not just that, he is reported to have recommended Sanjay Dutt as the new host.
