CANALMASTER recycler with new HELI 360-6 TANDEM
Identified problems/issues: Today´s sewer cleaning vehicles host complex technical components and processes, e.g. the water recycling system for gaining water out of the sucked sludge to clean the sewer lines with high pressure water. The operator needs to understand and control the processes of the truck to prevent damage and to work efficient. At the same time the job sites become more and more difficult due to traffic situations and space conditions with regard of the truck size. Very often the maneuvering of the truck for reaching the manhole of the sewer lines with the suction hose and high pressure hose needs a lot of time. Also safety issues of the operator and of other traffic participants have to be considered. Thus for the operator it is a big challenge to work most efficient and safely while his actual focus should rather lay on the basic sewer cleaning process. Keeping this in mind the following problems/issues have been identified: • Difficult maneuvering of the truck in traffic situations (sometimes backwards), because of restricted work space for the suction hose and the high pressure hose (very often only at the tail end of the truck).
• No compact design of the truck, because the jib arm and the drum for the high pressure hose are mounted at the tail end of the truck, which makes it longer. So the maneuvering of the truck is more difficult. • Sometimes the manhole of the sewer line is located with a larger distance to the truck, e.g. behind a wall, hedge or a parking car. Current jib arms, which guide both the suction hose and the high pressure hose, are limited in their extension and work space. • Sometimes the sewer lines are very deep below the surface of the road. Therefor the operator needs sufficient length of the suction hose. In combination with a jib arm for suction hose and high pressure hose today´s sewer cleaning vehicles only have a restricted reservoir for the suction hose, e.g. for 50 ft @ 50“. • In narrow streets or in dangerous traffic situations the operator better should work at the front of the truck to be more safe and to prevent dangerous traffic situations. Current sewer cleaning vehicles only provide the possibility either to work mostly at the tail end of the truck or rarely at the front of the truck, not both. So current sewer cleaning vehicles are limited in this matter. • Often the operator is exposed to aerosols which come out of the manhole of the sewer line while cleaning. Aerosols are a big health risk to the operator. The driver´s cab is a suitable working place to be protected against aerosols and also noise. But today´s sewer cleaning vehicles don´t provide the driver cab as a working place in combination with a jib arm for the suction hose and the high pressure hose. • Designing a jib arm for guiding both the suction hose as well as one or two high pressure hoses is a big challenge when the work space for the operator should be all around the vehicle. Both suction hose drum and high pressure hose drum can´t be mounted on the jib arm, because of limits of height of the whole truck. By separating the high pressure hose drum from a rotatable jib arm problems with leading the high pressure hose onto the jib arm occur if the rotation of the jib arm needs to be at least 360° (working all around the truck).
Innovation solution: The new CANALMASTER recycler includes the new jib arm HELI 360-6 TANDEM to solve all above mentioned problems/issues. The HELI 360-6 TANDEM is a 360° rotatable, extendible and liftable jib arm, placed on the top of the sewer cleaning vehicle. In opposite to current jib arms, which are also 360° rotatable, the HELI 360-6 guides a suction hose as well as one or two high pressure hoses. The challenge of this innovation was the guiding of the high pressure hose inside the jib arm due to a separate bearing of the high pressure hose drum apart of the jib arm. Current solutions just provide combined jib arms (TANDEM = parallel guidance of suction hose and high pressure hose) with an angle of rotation up to 180°. A special guiding system of the HELI 360-6 for the high pressure hose makes an angle of rotation of 360° possible. The high pressure hose enters the guiding system in an tangential region, entwines the pivot of the jib arm, and exits the guiding system before leading onto the extendible region
of the jib arm. According to the position of the jib arm, the high pressure hose entwines the pivot between a half and one and a half times. The suction hose is places above the jib arm on a horizontal drum. Both the suction hose and one or two high pressure hoses have to be synchronized while rotation and or extending/lifting the jib arm.
Guiding system of two high pressure hoses
Jib arm with suction hose drum and guiding system for high pressure hoses
Benefits • Parallel guiding of a suction hose and one or two high pressure hoses on a jib arm, which is 360° rotatable, extendible and liftable. • The work space is enlarged to an area all around the vehicle. With maximum extension the end of the jib arm can be positioned 20 ft abeam of the left or the right edge of the vehicle. • Suction hose reservoir up to 100 ft @ 50“ diameter, so as double as current solutions. • Guiding of one or two high pressure hoses with different diameter, e.g. 1000 ft @ 1,25“ diameter (MONO HD) or 800 ft @ 1“ diameter AND 530 ft @ 1,25“ diameter.
• Compact design of the vehicle (short overhang of the chassis) with regard to narrow traffic and space situations. • Easy handling and positioning of the jib arm via radio control or touch panel with smartphone flair.
Significant Benefits • The operator is able to work all around the vehicle, at the tail end, on the left and the right side as well as in front of the truck. The work space is enlarged to a radius of round about 24 ft around the pivot of the jib arm - unique in sewer cleaning business world wide. • High flexibility with regard to traffic and other space situations. Sewer cleaning is possible everywhere and in every situation. • Due to the flexibility of the HELI 360-6 TANDEM the safety of the operator and of other traffic participants is ensured. • The sewer cleaning vehicle can also be operated from the driver´s cab by radio control. This prevents the operator from aerosols out of the sewer lines and from noise. • The easy handling of the jib arm and the universal usability of the sewer cleaning vehicle in different situations lead to high efficiency of sewer cleaning with focus on resource consumption as well as on time saving (total cost of ownership).
Results of field tests The new HELI 360-6 TANDEM was tested in different working situations of sewer cleaning. As a result all above mentioned benefits could be achieved. At least the whole handling of the sewer cleaning vehicle (maneuvering the truck and positioning the suction hose and the high pressure hoses) led to a saving of time, which increases the efficiency of the sewer cleaning vehicle. Time savings of 30 min. up to one hour occurred very often, which means more time for sewer cleaning and results in a shorter amortisation of the sewer cleaning vehicle.
