With the help of our journalists, photographers, copy editors, models, graphic designers, stylists, and most importantly our readers, Roam has truly flourished. Our goal in Founding Roam has been to create a community that shares a passion for fashion and the arts. Can you believe that in 8 months we have created 4 prints and 8 lookbooks? None of that would be possible without our amazing team believing in themselves and their talents. We aspire to push people out of their comfort zone to try new things and take risks. We believe that challenges help us grow into the best versions of ourselves and revive the creative spirit. Radiant represents the bright light Roam has cultivated with all of its successes. NYFW Color Trend Report Spring/Summer 2022

By Sidney Hernandez ROAM BOULDER

W

ith spring and summer right around the corner, knowing which colors and patterns are in for this season can greatly affect your buying decisions in the next couple of weeks. Pantone’s newest color trend report for spring and summer New York Fashion Week can help. “The Pantone Color Institute™ is a consulting service within Pantone that forecasts global color trends and advises companies on color in brand identity and product development, for the application and integration of color as a strategic asset.” When the colors come out each season, designers pay attention and make sure to implement their colors of the season into their own pieces.

For the 2022 spring and summer season, the theme is colors that display our comfort with the familiar while also implementing optimistic, spontaneous, joyous and stand-out shades. Leatrice Eiseman, the Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, describes, “As we enter this new landscape, one where fashion rules no longer apply, hues for Spring 2022 allow us to mix and marry as we please, encouraging the exploration of new chromatic realities, opening the door for a personalized style and spontaneous color statements.”

Using Color Psychology in Your Wardrobe

W

By Sidney Hernandez & Maria Batts

ith colors, we know that bright and distinct ones can make or break your wardrobe, but can colors change your mood and how people perceive you? Different hues can depict different emotions and can evoke many feelings. Knowing what each color means allows you to use these emotional responses and perceptions to your advantage. Starting with red: This color has been described as a color of extremes, specifically because there are many hues and multiple meanings originating from different cultures. Wearing red can portray excitement, energy, passion, love, speed, strength, power, aggression, danger, violence, basically anything intense and passionate. It is known to be a compelling color, associated with dominance. However, the hue can change this depiction: In red’s most natural state, it is said to be “a dynamic stimulant and an activator of energy.” People react more quickly to red than any other color. Wearing darker reds can make others view you as responsible, but also daring. This allows you to be portrayed as an individual that commands attention when walking into a room. It is definitely a daring color, but if you can wear it with confidence, nothing will stop you. Though very similar to red, pink holds different associations. For starters, it is a very soft, gentle color. It is still just as energizing and passionate as red, however, this energy is more associated with romance, creativity, and tenderness. This color is obviously well suited for dates, and high-energy activities, such as dancing and working on creative hobbies. Orange promotes energy balance and can give off a friendly, creative, and bubbly aura. It is a very social color and shows that you are not afraid to be the center of attention. With a mix of the daring color red and the happiness of yellow, orange commands, but is also seen as approachable and friendly. It is definitely a difficult choice to wear, but when styled well, it can make a great statement. It is said that orange is considered to be the least professional-looking color, with people viewing it as childish and insincere. It is a color that ROAM BOULDER

many tend to shy away from, but if applied the right way and with the proper attitude, orange can do great things to brighten up your wardrobe. Coming into one of oranges counterparts, yellow can brighten up your wardrobe while conveying an easy-going aura. Yellow represents happiness and joy and can make you stand out, especially when wearing it in cooler seasons. As a warm color, it is more popular during seasons like summer and spring, but this definitely should not be something to be afraid of! In Pantone’s Color of The Year 2021, a shade of yellow made it to the top trending color, so it is very much a color you would be better off having in your wardrobe. Green is another diverse color, combining the strengths of both blue and yellow to make it both capable of calming and energizing, depending on the shade. Lighter greens are associated with positivity, new beginnings, and friendliness; Making them a great choice for meeting new people or motivating you to try new things. Dark green, on the other hand, represents wealth and abundance. If you’ve been trying to manifest some extra cash or a job opportunity, adding a little green to your wardrobe can’t hurt. In addition, all shades of green are associated with nature, so green is a great choice if

you want to go for a more natural toned-down look. Blue is a color with a few different meanings depending on the shade. Light blue is calming, refreshing, and friendly, making it good for casual social activities such as hanging out with friends and also a great choice for any time you’re trying a new hobby or club. It will not only make you more approachable, but will also calm any nerves you may have about trying something new. Dark blue, on the other hand, is associated with professionalism, confidence, and knowledge. It is a great choice for presentations, interviews, and professional meetings. Wearing dark blue is the easiest step you can take in dressing for success.

Purple is a color historically associated with nobility and wealth due to the fact that purple dye used to be so expensive to produce. Today that meaning holds true as purple is still a color that symbolizes strength and power. It is also associated with imagination and wisdom, making it good for working on creative projects and academic focus. This makes it another great choice, along with blue, for professional environments and presentations, especially those containing creative elements. Black, although achromatic (i.e. not an actual color), is a staple shade that everybody should have at least one article of clothing from. Wearing black promotes class, elegance, and sexiness while also

promoting stability and reliability. It is a confident color and definitely yields a form of sophistication when wearing. Noted by Colorbux, if you are aiming to be more successful in life, black clothes can have a similar effect as Neuro-Remapping in one’s life, which can prove to be an effective way to prime yourself for success. Black is an important color as it provides contrast to other colors. If there were no black in fashion, clothing would be bland and one-dimensional. With black portraying a sort of elegance and mystery, it is a color that you definitely want to balance into your wardrobe. White is the combination of all other colors, making it one of the most versatile and pairable colors, along with black. It works well for softening other colors without distracting from them. On its own, it represents cleanliness and innocence. These traits make it great for situations where you want to establish trust, for example, meeting new people and going in for interviews. It is also great for simplistic and minimalistic fashion trends as well as help bright and bold outfits look more put together and cohesive. Whether you want to feel more powerful, seem more down to earth, or welcome in some positive energy, color psychology can help you out. So go forward with your new knowledge and don’t be afraid to welcome those bright colors into your wardrobe. You may find that they change more than you’d expect! 11

STATEMENT FASHION

ROAM BOULDER

Passing Trend or Permanent Fixture? By Nic Tamayo

I

nfluencers like @tinyjewishgirl’s sway over fashion trends have created a renewed interest in vintage and second-hand clothing as a means to create outfits that SAY something. Fashion is ever-changing, old trends become new and new trends become old within days. Especially through the continuously increasing use of visually-focused social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat, fast fashion has become extremely popular. From clothing brands and stores like Forever21 & Zara to online sellers like Shein, the popularity of mass-produced on-trend clothing is easily distinguishable. However, even as these companies continue to grow their market shares and cement themselves as household names, a resurgence of climate consciousness has taken over.

Perlmutter’s outlook is indicative of what this method of styling is for those who partake. In a world over which we have little control, we often grasp at the small pieces of order we can create–whether through coloring within the lines or creating well-manicured & put-together looks. However, this “statement” fashion, which deliberately aims to create chaos through the means of fashion, mirrors the world we live in better than the polished fast fashion of the past few years. What fun is fashion if we, as everyday stylers of our outfits, aren’t allowed to create chaos in a world that values order and structure overall? What fun is fashion if we can’t create outfits that make sense to us? What fun is fashion if we can’t make statements about ourselves and our personalities by presenting ourselves to the world?

Thrifting, a term used to describe the purchase of second-hand/used goods through a reseller like Goodwill or Arc Thrift Stores, has itself become a trend over recent months. A renewed interest in vintage clothing has also helped to drive this flock of gen z and millennial shoppers to purchase more and more of their wardrobe at these second-hand shops. With more eyes on the wild and kooky finds to be made at these establishments, a new way of styling outfits has emerged as well. In what I call the “statement fashion trend,” outfits are being styled and created around unique pieces of clothing usually procured through a second-hand outlet. Better known by her online username @tinyjewishgirl, Clara Perlmutter, has become one of the leading influencers in constructing this movement. In an interview she gave to Paper Magazine, Perlmutter says “I’ve never been afraid to experiment, and I’ve always gone for things that are more eclectic. I aim for things to not make sense together.” 13

An Interview with Unity for CU By Sidney Hernandez

S

tarting April 4th, 2022, election week commences and Unity for CU wants your vote. Unity is a ticket running to lead the university next year as tri-executives. They would beg the first all-female tri-executive administration in almost 40 years. Tri-candidates Rachel Hill, Chloe Nicklas, and Lucie Nguyen hope to bring tangible change to CU Boulder’s campus through implementing initiatives on three pillars: unity, equity, and safety. Within these pillars, some of their plans include allowing student organizations to get more money from the university as well as implementing PRISM, a restorative justice initiative to combat sexual misconduct that has been used at many other universities. PRISM is a tool to assist victims of sexual misconduct while allowing perpetrators to learn about the harm their actions have caused, whilst taking steps to be better. This solution is focused on the needs of the victim, and because all situations of sexual misconduct are different, will give an alternative pathway for those impacted to find justice. These tri-candidates find sexual misconduct to be a large issue that the use of PRISM can help with as it has proven to be effective at other universities. Other plans falling under those three pillars include raising the university cap on funding for student organizations, implementing a fee waiver for study abroad applications and keeping a virtual option open for all classes, as well as making sure that every professor and space in the university has a safety sheet with what to do in the case of an emergency. The tri-executives serve as the university’s three student body presidents. Each tri-executive handles a different aspect of the job: internal, external, or student affairs. These separate roles allow the executives to focus on different obstacles

at CU and work to make the university a better place for everyone. Each Unity candidate has an extensive background. Rachel and Chloe, who currently serve on the Student Organization Allocations Committee (SOAC)-- a board that funds student organizations. Lucie serves on the Rec Board, which oversees the Rec Center. They have been able to see student government on a first-hand basis, and they know what needs to be altered. “Being in student government is crucial in knowing how to change it to better impact students. We have also based many of our campaign initiatives off conversations we have had with students. Our knowledge of CUSG, willingness to learn from students, and tangible goals will make it easy for us to hit the ground running and begin making campus better when we are elected,” Unity states. “Women in power pave the way and inspire other women to seek positions in power,” says Unity. Unity for CU hopes that, after the student body sees an all-women board, more will follow. They hope that strong women are able to seek these positions with other strong women after seeing the significant change that just three women can make. “To other women aspiring to be in positions of leadership, we say that it may not be easy– but it will be worth it. When women seek positions of power, even when we are the first, we ensure that we are not the last by encouraging other women to do the same,” says Unity. You can find more information about Unity for CU on their Instagram page @unityforcu and their website unityforcu.com. “During the election week of April 4 - 8, you will receive a link in your email to vote. [You] can go on Buff Portal and a CUSG election link will be there. Once you click the link, be sure to select Unity!” 17

A Visit With Little Piece of My Heart By Samantha Hruska

I

t is that time of year! Spring is here and it is time to start romanticizing life again: sip that perfect iced latte from your picnic blanket on Farrand Field as someone tosses a frisbee in your peripherals. But, wait! Do you have anything to wear? Well, don’t worry because Little Piece of My Heart has your back! Right on The Hill, this cute shop is definitely one to check out. The LPOMH origin story began with taking a leap of faith. The owner Stephanie Borgman said, “I fell into severe postpartum depression and felt like I was missing a part of myself. The part that fulfilled my soul’s destiny and in turn would make me a much better mother and example to my children. That’s when the universe did some crazy things and started throwing all the signs at me. A storefront two blocks from my house was for rent. I decided spontaneously one day to just call and see what the price was. I had no money of my own so I was honestly just doing it to play around with the idea. When the person renting out the space answered the phone, she told me her name was Faith. A day later my credit card gave me a random large increase on my credit line and a psychic told me I would start my own business. Everything was lining up. It was now or never. The universe was presenting an opportunity to me so I jumped on it. Here we are 4.5 years later with 4 storefronts. Never thought this would be possible in my wildest dreams, but it’s all about taking that moment of risk and fighting past your own fear.” Life is too short to not do what you want to do. If you don’t go after what you want you will never have it. Uncomfortable, unhappy situations force you to make a move. You must grow and find that place in which you are happy because that’s what you deserve. You deserve to satisfy that calling.

The name itself, “Little Piece of My Heart,” came from Janis Joplin’s song. Janis Joplin was one of the few women in the classic rock industry and a legendary rock star who went after what she wanted, even if the path was unclear. Janis inspired Borgman because being a woman entrepreneur is just as tricky. More than that, I feel this is empowering to coworkers, customers, and the community. From the Janis Joplin vibes, LPOMH tries to be “A reflection of the hippie days. Meaning letting your freak flag fly, rebel, be your true self, let loose, and unleash your soul. We are not for the conservative, the basic, or those who can’t accept others’ uniquenesses. We celebrate individuality! My ambitions for LPOMH are to learn how we can be an all-around better business and start developing further with purpose and ethics in mind. I want to continue celebrating uniqueness while paying attention to our customers’ desires and needs,” says Borgman. The clothes they sell are a representation of all these values and ambitions. Retro is the theme of their store and the theme of the clothes. The pieces are meant to bring out your individuality through comfort and style. The shopping experience at LPOMH is truly unique. The best part about shopping at LPOMH is that the essence of the store, people, and clothes all mix to create an easy environment. LPOMH creates the best service by being authentic and being welcoming. Customers feel accepted and can express themselves through clothing. This allows relationships to form. These relationships include one’s own journey within fashion, developing a relationship with others, and just having fun. LPOMH is empowering, enthusiastic, and kind-hearted, making it a blast to browse. The goal in putting together an outfit is mentally picturing yourself confident and comfortable in a look. See yourself moving upwards. See yourself progressing and growing. LPOMH really inspires that. If you are a fashionista, supporter of a small business, or just trying to browse, LPOMH is definitely the place to check out!

Yet the store has the best jewelry collection, scarves, and bags ever. So, if you want some colorful pieces to add to your closet, go check this store out.

If you don’t have all one color, don’t fret! Mix those brights together. Vivid greens and vivid blues are just one combination that looks so stellar together. Try it out!

Encanto is Radiant By Samantha Hruska

o you need a movie recommendation for date night, a pick-me-up, or a study break? Radiating with positivity, humor, catchy music, and style is the new movie Encanto and it’s the perfect film for you. To the people who’ve seen it, you know what’s up, go watch it again. To those who haven’t, what are you doing? Nothing is more uplifting than entertaining yourself with one of the newest Disney Pixar films… besides for reading all of ROAM’s editions…. It is a must-see! You might be thinking, “Oh, it’s over-hyped,” or “Oh, I already know all about it,” but the bottom line is that you’re missing out. I will admit that I too was once naive and didn’t think Encanto would be anything special. However, trust me when I say your life will never be the same once you see inside the amazing Madrigals’ lives. Encanto is an amazing film full of heartfelt teachings that bring colorful surprises and relatable emotions to the public. You´ll be thrilled by the beautiful animation and wholesome magic in this film. The special effects are terrific. Everything is vibrant: - The music, the characters, the backgrounds, and the outfits. This movie has become a part of my weekly routine; I literally watch it once a week and don’t get tired because the film is RADIANT! You must go see it!

culture through language, instrumentation, and emotion. The song “Dos Oruguitas” is personally my favorite in the film. The song is sung completely in Spanish, but if you use subtitles or look up the lyrics, it is a breathtaking and sentimental story. It flows with ease between its subjects about love, metamorphosis, and the cycles within life; the song truly is a story within itself. But don’t take my word for it, go watch Encanto and listen for yourself!

Naturally, everyone expects spectacular songs from Disney, and Encanto certainly delivers. All the songs add a unique layer to the storyline that draws the audience in as they are so catchy and entertaining. The production pays homage to Spanish

Last, some of the messages of the film are to believe in yourself, never give up, and that there are positives in the hardest of challenges. With themes like that, why would you not watch it? This film is truly spectacular, and everyone should go see it.

Next, the storyline is extremely well written. I really love the characters, and their designs are adorable. They all have bright, unique, and endearing personalities. All the characters have this special touch that makes it super easy for viewers to connect with. The numerous characters and different magical gifts within the movie allow for fun conversations, personality quizzes, and thoughts on how they relate to real relationships and people. I particularly love how the outfits are traditional and contemporary at the same time. They are so beautiful! All of the attire fits the culture and characters of the film. It is brilliant to see how each character has a slightly different way of dressing that again provides for more adoration for the film.

More Than a Thrift Store: Apocalypse, Behind The Scenes By Katalina Villarreal

H

ave you been waiting to go on a shopping spree with friends? Perhaps you are longing for clothing that brings out the inner you? Or have you been looking for that perfect T-shirt to complete your everyday look? If any of these questions resonate with you, then I personally suggest making an outing to visit Boulder’s very own buy-sell-trade resale store, Apocalypse. Apocalypse is an adorable secondhand clothing store, located at 1813 Pearl Street Boulder, CO, where you can buy and sell modern and vintage clothes! Roam Boulder is honored to have collaborated with the owners of Apocalypse, Madison and Jed, and we are so excited to bring you this interview and magazine issue. Without further ado, let’s get to know Boulder’s very own eco-aligned clothing store.

So, what is Apocalypse’s origin story? How did it start? Born out of my love for personal expression through style, and the pain my partner Jed and I feel around the degradation of the planet at the hands of the fashion industry, we were deeply moved to create a place for clothing to be reinvigorated with new life. After getting a degree at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, my first resale job inspired me. I loved the circular model of buy-selltrade, where I could switch wardrobes a few times a year on a shoestring budget. I threw myself into the job: Learning how to curate a resale space (we buy directly from the public every day!), offering a positive customer experience, and figuring out what it takes to manage a team. I decided to apROAM BOULDER

prentice myself to the secondhand trade, working for 5 resale concept stores with the intention to learn the best way to run a secondhand store. Fast forward to October 2020, my partner Jed and I watched two Pearl Street resale shops go out of business during the pandemic. We were devastated by the loss to the resale community. Buy-selltrades are one link in the chain of the secondhand clothing industry, and many people depend on these stores for their livelihoods. We were thrilled to bring that important service back to our community and throw our creative energy into the brand and the prime brick and mortar location. I’d been working toward this dream for a decade! Apocalypse was born four months later, opening our doors in January 2021!

Behind The Name: Why “Apocalypse”? In 2016 I started a small business buying and reselling vintage items at little pop-up events around Boulder. I named it Disco Apocalypse (@ disco.apocalypse on IG). I chose the word ‘apocalypse’ because the climate crisis was developing and having a severe impact on our collective psyche. The ‘disco’ part was a reminder to stay rooted in the body, keep moving, and find the sparkle of life amidst the ominous time we were, and are, living in. At the end of 2020, one of the most challenging years in recent history, we began to work on the retail shop at 1813 Pearl Street. We soon discovered that the Greek origin of ‘apocalypse’ (apokalypsis) means, “A cataclysmic revelation of knowledge in which the forces of good triumph over the forces

of evil.” In a time that sometimes feels tumultuous, we are comforted by knowing that while the world as we know it may be coming to an end, the light at the end of the tunnel is guiding us towards a better future for the next generations. The word ‘apocalypse’ has historically been weaponized by colonialism to imply disaster and destruction. Maybe we need a little destruction of the systems that are in place to break through to a better world for everyone.

What do the terms “fashion” and “style” mean to Apocalypse? “Style is a simple way of saying complicated things.” - Jean Cocteau While fashion is a beautiful art form that I deeply appreciate, sadly the word has taken on negative connotations for me. The industry has shown great disregard for human life and our beloved blue jeweled planet. From near-slavery con-

ditions for clothing makers, the chemical waste and pollution, to burning deadstock, and to the peer pressure and body-image challenges brought about by current cultural trends… the industry at large is deeply corrupt. Yet each of us can reclaim fashion through our individual choices. We can change this reputation by saying “no” to the companies that extract and exploit, instead choosing enduring pieces made by happy people with sustainable materials. Ecoaligned and sustainable companies can be hard to find and even harder to vet; our solution to the quandary is sticking to secondhand shopping. There are so many items of clothing in the world and so many that need a loving home. Adopt a new-to-you pair of pants today! Style is the physical embodiment of personal expression. Clothing is another palette we have to paint with; it is an art that we get to wear every day. There is much power in the ability to effectuate personal expression through style. 31

What is Apocalypse’s goal for this year? Our most important goal is being a positive example of our values: Kindness, Curiosity, and Creativity. By living these values, we strive to shape a space of inclusion for all people and create a sense of belonging for our team, our shoppers, and our sellers. Creating a workplace atmosphere that is empathetic, concerned for the planet, and human-first is at odds with much of the current culture. At Apocalypse, we want to be a positive force for change in our industry and for our planet. We don’t believe in making a profit if we leave our earth or our community behind. We hold numerous fundraisers each year, featuring local and national mutual aids that lift up people and the planet. Our aim is to raise 10k this year for communities and causes that need support and visibility.

ROAM BOULDER

Who or what inspires Apocalypse to continue to pursue sustainability? This quote hangs on our wall: “We are each personally responsible for creating a world that is more ethical than the one we grew up in.” - Eliezer Yudkowsky The next generation of humans will not be able to see living coral reefs, or an ocean free of chemical runoff. Our inspiration is to hand a livable planet, full of opportunities for every human, to the next generation.

Is diversity and inclusion an important value to Apocalypse?

What are a few styles someone could find at Apocalypse?

First, it is important to acknowledge that we reside on the stolen land of the Ute, Cheyenne, and Arapahoe nations.

Y2K styles are back! Think Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, and Destiny’s Child. Pull out the JNCO’s.

As white people, residing on this sacred land, we have a responsibility to the indigenous community, and other historically marginalized groups, to attempt to repair the harm that has been done. Because of the culture and socio-economic status of the majority of Boulder, we understand it can sometimes feel like an unaccepting, unfriendly place for BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities. We know much of this work comes from self-education on anti-racism and repatterning our own ways of thinking. As an organization, we strive to encourage visibility, belonging, and psychological safety for these systematically oppressed groups. We do this by using not only signals, such as flags and posters to represent and welcome different folks, but also by carefully selecting the language we use and the way in which we organize the store. Different from most clothing or resale stores, and the fashion industry at large, we strive to use gender-neutral language such as ‘feminine’ or ‘masculine’ instead of ‘men’s’ or ‘women’s’ when talking about clothing. We hope that this sets a welcoming tone for our queer, trans, and non-binary shoppers. We acknowledge our own limitations as a small, local business, but feel the power rising in the collective.

Lately, western styles are trending and sellers are bringing us a lot of beautiful pieces. Also, utility pants and jackets with workwear details such as Carhardt, Dickies, and Levi’s are always hot sellers for us. Our shoppers have a vast range of needs, so we strive to have something for everyone: From a cozy cashmere sweater to a costume for a festival, we hope everyone who walks in the door can build an outfit at Apocalypse.

Is there a message that Apocalypse wants to tell the Boulder community? Great personal style and planetary well-being can coexist! Wow, I’m so ready to find a vintage dress now! Roam Boulder greatly appreciates Apocalypse for allowing us to represent their values in this collaboration, and we hope to inspire our readers to hold these same values. Also, make sure to note the clothing you like as you look through the pages because almost all of it was borrowed in-store from Apocalypse!

Sustainable Style: Keeping Fashion in Our Future By Abigail Wiegmann

S

ustainable fashion is growing amongst the fashion industry and is becoming a widely adopted backbone for the future of fashion. Fashion and sustainability go farther than the materials, it also encompasses the avenues that designers and brands take to turn their visions into masterful works of art. This is executed through sourcing, production, sales, and, of course, the product itself. If the world is eager to witness the future of fashion accompanied by genius minds, the industry must adjust for sustainability. Chelsea Claridge, the founder of New Yorkbased CAALO, focuses on the sustainability of outerwear while maintaining the beauty of the brand’s products. This brand has run a fine-tooth comb through its production process, making sure that every box is checked off for sustainability. “We believe in high-quality, eco-materials and sustainable production to ensure our garments last for many seasons for both values to the customer and to keep waste out of landfills,” states CALLO’s mission statement. The “high-quality and eco-materials” are sourced through recycled fabrics from Japan, Italy, and Korea-all countries with a major fashion influence. Beautiful garments are crafted to invoke a genderless and nonconforming style that provides a sleek finish to any outfit. With the brand focusing on non-gender-specific and timeless outerwear, it is versatile amongst all individuals and allows for longevity. Fast fashion has become exceptionally popular in the last few years, which is solely based on and derived from social media influence and trends. Over the last few years, specifically during the Covid-19 pandemic, there has been a rise in online brands that deliberately sell cheaply made products for low prices, leaving behind a less than desirable sustainable footprint. The goal is to produce and sell at fast rates to turn a profit.

In contrast, CAALO is taking these concerns and creating a door for inspiration, moving the industry forward. The brand has small teams of people that produce products as needed, rather than in bulk supply, in hopes of saving products and materials. Not only are they working within reasonable means, but the brand also partners with sustainable factories for production, leading to an overall well-rounded sustainable system. Looking for outerwear that will last for more than a season can be a struggle, especially through the lens of fast fashion; however, brands like CAALO exist to “craft garments with longevity in mind, to be worn for multiple seasons and functionalities.” French designer Marine Serre, founder of the brand Marine Serre, holds promise to create fashion that is sustainable through recycled materials. The brand encapsulates the meaning of a circularity system that efficiently carries out sustainability. “Circularity, for us, is the ability to recycle, and to “regenerate” materials that already exist, defining our Modus Operandi in reducing waste by reintegrating the end-of-life products into a cyclical process that ensures transparency and adaptability of our resources,” Marine Serre values states. The sourcing of materials for the brand comes directly from upcycled and recycled materials. The brand is proud to address that approximately fifty percent of their collections have been

produced through recycled materials, the other fifty percent being carefully selected “sustainable fibers, such as biodegradable yarns and recycled fibers.” This is an impressive number and should be celebrated and acknowledged more by the fashion industry, as the brand is successfully contributing to sustainability with propelling numbers. The brand’s radical commitment to a stronger stylish future is something that surrounding brands and designers need to take note of. “Regeneration is a mutual endeavor that requires the investment of time and creativity in order to stimulate and rethink the cycle of fashion, and to restore dignity to materials that are damaged and discarded, giving them a new purpose, form, and duration,” Marine Serre states. Giving purpose to pre-existing articles and products is extremely important when thinking about creating an avenue for sustainability. Within the current industry’s environment, fashion stands in a deep ditch with a shovel in hand. Going deeper and deeper into a hole that is going to be hard to see innovation in the future. Sustainability within the industry will allow society to continue expressing ideologies, culture, attitudes and personal statements. These are essential attributes that solidify the future of fashion. What a shame it would be to see these qualities of everyday life, embraced through fashion, be tarnished by the lack of ethos and morality in the industry. 35

Bringing Plants into your Home with Terracotta By Maria Batts

W

hether you’re in a dorm, an apartment, or a house, plants can be a great way to brighten up your home. Unfortunately, this is a busy time of year which may not leave you much time for “growing” your green thumb or learning new skills; so to help you out, here are some plant recommendations and care tips from Eben Forrest, the owner of Terracotta, a plant shop and cafe located on the corner of 20th and Pearl St.

Plant Care One of the most basic elements of plant care is proper watering. Eben says this starts with selecting the right pot for your plant. A draining pot is a pot with a hole in the bottom to drain exROAM BOULDER

cess water and it’s a great idea for most plants, however, it should be used with a saucer to catch draining water. Non-draining pots are great for decoration, but they should only be used as cover pots, usually with a nursery pot inside and the non-draining pot on the outside. This prevents the plant from sitting in standing water, which helps prevent root rot. Once you have the right pot, you want to start with watering your plant completely until the bottom fills up with water, then drain the excess. Next, you should periodically check the soil with your finger or check the pot’s weight to see how dry the soil is. Depending on the plant type, some will need more water than others, so it is important to research your unique plant variety to know when to water again.

If you notice your plant’s soil is wet for a lot longer than expected, then try giving it more sunlight. Another concern Eben discussed is how to get your plant home for the summer, which might be easier than you think. In order to protect your plants from getting crushed, you should wrap them in paper tubes or put them in sturdy boxes. As you are traveling, try to give your plants sunlight whenever you can. This could mean setting it out while you take a break from driving or opening the box next to a window while you’re waiting to board at the airport. You also want to keep it away from extreme temperatures as much as possible, so putting it in your absolute baked potato of a trunk for hours on end is not ideal.

Plant Recommendations The pothos plant, also called devil’s ivy, is fairly inexpensive and very low maintenance, requiring little water or sunlight. They bounce back quite easily if you make a mistake, making them a great choice for beginners. These are plants that you can really show off because despite their humble care needs, they grow quite a lot under the right conditions. The only thing to watch out for with this plant is that it isn’t pet friendly, so this may not be the plant for you if you have a cat or dog that’s determined to get into everything in your home. Peperomia is another easy to care for option that requires little light and little water. There are many different types of peperomias with a wide range of leaf shapes, sizes and colors which almost guarantees there will be one that fits your style. The Rosso and Ripple Red varieties include bright maroon colors alongside their varying shades of green. This plant is also non-toxic and pet friendly, so you don’t have to worry about your cat Whiskers if she sneaks a bite. Cacti are some of the most hardy and resilient plants you can get. They require a lot of sun, but extremely little water. So if you forget about it for a few weeks, it will probably still be doing just fine. Some cacti even produce colorful, vibrant blooms during certain times of year. The Christmas Cactus blooms, as the name would suggest, right around Christmas with bright pink and red flowers. Cacti are technically not toxic, however they can still hurt pets with their spikes, so it’s up to you

whether you think your pet will steer clear or not. Tradescantia is a plant that is slightly higher maintenance, needing frequent watering and moderate sun, but its beauty makes it worth it. This plant is known for its bright purple and green leaves as well as its ability to grow quickly. Its nickname is the inch plant, because it is said to grow an inch per week which makes it another great one to show off your green thumb. Something to be aware of is that this plant is not pet friendly. The hoya requires little water and varying levels of light depending on the variant. Each one is very cute and colorful when cared for the right way. This type of plant can vary from bright flowering plants, to the succulent Sweetheart variety. This plant is non-toxic, so it is perfectly pet friendly. If none of these plants fit what you’re looking for then local plant shops such as Terracotta are a great place to look. Terracotta’s calm atmosphere makes it an amazing place to start. One of the first things you’ll notice is that the tags all list the water and sun requirements, as well as the general care difficulty and whether it is pet friendly, making it easy to find the right plant for you. They also use an integrated pest management program, which means that rather than using harmful pesticides, they use an organic canola-based alternative and live lacewings as a form of natural pest control. Not only do you feel good about the plants you’re purchasing, but you also know where your money is going: Terracotta donates 1% of their profits to Cool Earth, a program that gives Indigenous people the resources to protect the forests they live in. While you’re there, you can also grab a coffee or take a class on everything from basic plant care to terrarium building. One of the most important notes on plant care that Eben made was that taking care of plants is easier than you would think if you know what you have and research it effectively. So, whether you want an easy plant to bring in some nature or a stunningly colorful one that you can show off, there are many great options for everyone.

Au Naturel: 5 Clean Beauty Brands

L

By Katalina Villarreal

et’s get something straight: Anyone can wear makeup, but not all makeup should be worn. A lot of makeup and skincare products are harmful to the environment and to our skin. If you are someone who uses makeup or any type of skincare product and you also care about the environment, you will want to take note of the makeup and skincare brands listed below! Before I start the list, let’s do a crash course on makeup’s history and what it’s made of: Makeup has been around for centuries and has been viewed in a multitude of ways depending on the era and society. If you were an Ancient Egypt geek like me, then you might know that using makeup in Egypt was a sign of wealth and power and showed respect for the Gods. Or if you grew up with Christianity, maybe you heard that using makeup is promiscuous and promotes vanity. Ancient Romans shunned the everyday use of makeup because it was worn by sex workers, even though all genders used lotions, deodorants, perfumes, soaps, and wore stage makeup for performances. Geishas in Japan used makeup to enhance their mysticism and illusion. Indigenous groups have used makeup for ceremonies as well as in war. Makeup was also worn primarily by men for a long time across Europe. As you can see, the use and opinion of makeup has shifted from good to bad and bad to good again and again. It was only around the 20th century that makeup regained popularity for everyday use. However, no matter what opinion people had of makeup, it was usually made of dangerous ingredients. Earlier makeup included lead, which caused many women to develop face paralysis or even die. Today makeup still contains lead, but also talc, mercury, petroleum, and more because the U.S. is not required to regulate the chemicals in makeup. We know how dangerous lead and all ROAM BOULDER

of the other ingredients are for the human body, but we still don’t have a lot of regulations. I always think about the radium girls who died because of the intentional oversight from radium companies in order to make money. As we now know, radium is radioactive and can cause death. When it was first discovered, however, many people were putting it in water, makeup, and allowing workers to breathe it in and consume it. While that is an extreme example, it is an important and overlooked part of history and a harsh reminder that we need to protect our wellbeing and advocate for safe and sustainable practices. Now that you are aware of makeup’s history and ingredients, let’s get into the list of my 5 favorite clean beauty brands: RMS Beauty - for that soft glow I love RMS because they are cruelty free, GMO free, synthetic fragrance free, paraben free, sulfate free, talc free, phthalate free, nano free, and gluten free except for their mascara. Their motto is that living ingredients make it radiant. My favorite product is their Lip2Cheek lipstick and blush combo, which I also use as eye shadow, because it is super soft and easy to use. It comes in 7 different colors, I have so far tried 5 of them and the pigments in all of them come out beautifully. BIOSSANCE - moisturizing creams made from real things Biossance formulates all of their products in a My Green Lab Platinum Certified facility and they are also vegan, cruelty free, nontoxic, paraben free, synthetic fragrance free, and PEG free. Their message is that sustainability can lead to a healthy life and planet.

I enjoyed their lactic acid night serum that helps to smooth and rejuvenate the skin. They also have a great mask for reducing lines and large pores and gently exfoliating the skin. MILK - smooth and hydrating Milk is 100% vegan, paraben free, and cruelty free. Milk believes in good ingredients and self expression. I adore their clear eyebrow gel! BITE Beauty - bright colors to enhance you Bite has such a long list of ingredients that they do not use; it is so wonderful because despite them using natural ingredients that are not harmful, they are still able to be vivid and bright with their colors. I use their Agave+ Intensive Lip Mask in rose gold pearl everyday, it sparkles and hydrates all at once.

ILIA - natural tones for the natural you Ilia’s mission is to protect and revive your skin. They acknowledge that not every natural ingredient is good and not every synthetic is bad and they cut no corners in coming up with safe and eco-aligned formulas. Their soft focus finishing powder sets and softens the look and lasts throughout the day. I also use their setting mist which feels very light. Growing up, I was told not to eat lipstick because it wasn’t good for me. I couldn’t comprehend why I was allowed to put something on my lips that would inevitably get into my mouth if it wasn’t safe for me to consume in the first place. The concept of clean makeup has been circulating through my mind ever since. During high school, my mom and I searched for natural makeup and skincare products, and after six years of trying out different makeup brands and skincare products that are focused on sustainability and nontoxic ingredients, I am happy to share my thoughts and I hope that some of you will give them a try! 41
