Dear friends and neighbors, Are you ready for adventure? This spring we embark on our first full season of overnight camping, cabins and yurts at Explore Park, and I couldn’t be more excited about the bright future ahead of us! Thanks to the work of private partners such as Blue Mountain Adventures, Don’s Cab-Inns and Reba Farm, we’re shaping the outdoor recreation landscape in Virginia’s Blue Ridge with fantastic adventure based amenities. As the park continues to develop, Roanoke County will rely on partnerships like these to better serve both residents and visitors to the region. We’re also thankful to the community partners and non-profit groups who have helped support Explore Park along the way, such as the Roanoke Disc Golf Club and Blue Ridge Off Road Cyclists (BROC), who will be instrumental in helping us fulfill the community’s vision for a mountain bike skills park later this year. Finally, community partners are pitching-in through cleanup efforts such as Clean Valley Day scheduled for April 6. Clearly, our region places a high value on environmental preservation and outdoor recreation. Let’s see where this adventure takes us!. Sincerely,
Director of Parks, Recreation & Tourism FEATURED CONTENT OUR FEATURED CONTENT IS HIGHLIGHTED BY OUR LOGO THUMBNAIL.

BIKING
BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAIN BIKE CENTER
Explore Park’s existing 14 miles of trails are already some of the area’s top biking destinations and a key part of the Virginia’s Blue Ridge region Sliver-Level Ride Center designation from the International Mountain Bike Association. Trail improvements are a central feature of the park envisioned in our recent Adventure Plan, combined with other developments including hiking, camping, horseback riding, whitewater canoeing, and an aerial adventure course. Over the past year Roanoke County has worked with some of the nation’s top consultants including Kay-Linn, Applied Trails Research and Trail Solutions to develop recommendations for trail development at the park. Trail design will be focused on creating a place where beginning riders can get started with the sport and develop the strength, stamina and skills to advance. FUNDING: In January 2019, the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors accepted $323,484 in funding from the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation’s Recreational Trails Program for the construction of mountain bike trails and a trailhead at Explore Park. This funding will be combined with a 25% match from Roanoke County, as well as additional capital funds and sponsorship revenue to build a destination facility. PHASE 1: The initial development will consist of 8,550 linear feet of new and rehabilitated mountain bike trails, plus a trailhead and parking area. Most of the trails will be single track with natural surfaces, but some will have optional skill features made of rock or other natural materials. The core skills area will contain several concentric loops of varying skill levels, including one beginner level trail with an aggregate surface. Estimated timeline for completion – Summer 2019. PHASE 2: Roanoke County is currently seeking partner organizations and sponsorships to construct a signature asphalt pump track, which will be located centrally in the core skills area. The pump track will be surrounded by a progressive set of low-to-ground balance features, mellow rollers, berms and natural feature obstacles such as rocks and logs. Estimated timeline for completion – Fall 2019.
8 8
PHASE 3: The next phase calls for the development of flow trails and intermediate skills features. Using the new trailhead as a central circulation point, we plan to develop several one-direction downhill single-track routes taking advantage of the natural rolling hillscape within the park. Roanoke County will work with local mountain bike enthusiasts for design guidance as these trails are developed. Estimated timeline for completion – 2020.

NEW: SHENANDOAH VALLEY AND BEYOND
Harrisonburg,Virginia and the surrounding area is home to a large population of Mennonites and Brethrens that live and work in this picturesque part of the Shenandoah Valley. Your first stop is the Dayton Farmers Market, where you can shop from a wide array of vendors displaying their many wares. We meet our step-on guide who will board the bus and explain in detail the important heritage and custom of these very industrious people. You will travel the backroads of this rich fertile valley and see where they worship, go to school, and work. A special highlight of the day is a “family style” feast from an old order Mennonite family served in their wonderful farmhouse. LEARNING TO LOOM KNIT “A big part of my nature is to be creative,” says Tonya Hodges. She uses loom knitting as a way to exhibit her creativity. Tonya picked up loom knitting in 2014, “My husband got me my first loom. It was quite a disastrous experience with not having enough instruction.” After a year of trial and tribulation with the craft, Tonya was determined to teach herself how to make a project through loom knitting. “I was either going to complete the project or burn all my looms and yarn and say forget it!” Her determination paid off, “I actually was able to make a preemie hat that afternoon and that was the seed that was planted to where I am today.” Today, Tonya owns her own business, Learn to Loom Knit and is a loom knitting instructor at Green Ridge Recreation Center. Tonya’s saying goes, “Loom knitting is my passion, and teaching is my calling.” Her loom knitting courses, listed above, require no previous experience with the hobby. Supplies are provided and include: looms, yarn, needles and handouts to practice

your skills at home. Participants will create their own preemie hat in the introductory course. As for the basics course, you’ll learn the most common loom knitting techniques including four cast-on and bind-off’s. Loom knitting has given Tonya a way to deal with aging hands and arthritis. “If anyone has had to give up the ability to be creative from aging hands or any other physical issues, this class is perfect!” From blankets to scarves, hats and coasters, Tonya has made anything and everything by loom knitting.“I started a consistent way of loom knitting by making preemie hats and shawls, and I take them to the hospital for NICU and cancer patients.” Loom knitting has been an outlet for Tonya’s creativity. “It is a way to be creative and create pieces for your family or community.” If you are looking to embark on your new creative journey, look into our new loom knitting course listed above.

Therapeutic Recreation Services is a partnership of:
CELEBRATING ABILITIES By: Kari Decker
Kids of all abilities can learn new skills, make friends, and have a great time through recreation programs and camps. Including kids with different abilities helps all children learn valuable skills such as how to play and grow together. Recreation is an excellent way to focus on how people are more similar than they are different, so they can find common ground. Roanoke County takes pride in working with families and care givers to help kids be successful in our programs and camps. The first step to supporting campers is completing the Roanoke County Camp Health Form. When families or care givers complete the County Health Form and document that their child has a disability, an IEP, or is on medication, Roanoke County Therapeutic Recreation Services staff will contact the family to ask follow up questions. Does your child have a reward system? Do they need a little extra help making friends? Is there a medical protocol in place? This will help staff know how to support a child to be as successful as possible. For example, if your child has a hard time hearing directions when they are focused on a project, a staff would know to take the time to speak directly to them when time to clean up. If your child has strength or balance difficulties, staff may plan to walk next to your child when crossing uneven ground. Knowing what techniques or accommodations work with your
child will help staff support them during their time at a program or camp. Roanoke County has had great success when staff know what a child’s needs are, and the camp is a good fit. Children with Down syndrome, Autism, physical disabilities, or sensory disabilities can have a wonderful time at our programs and camps. The key is to know what things work best for your child and what you and your child’s goals are – other than having a great time. Kindness and acceptance can be taught in different ways, but we can all learn and grow through recreation. Learning from each other and accepting people for who they are is an important part of creating an inclusive community in Roanoke. While at Roanoke County camps, kids are learning to care more about how cool a Lego creation is than if the child who built it is has autism. Roanoke County offers a summer camp specifically for kids with multiple developmental disabilities. ACE Camp supports kids who need 1:1 to complete tasks, a consistent schedule, struggle with typical peers, and may not be appropriate for other camps. Contact Kari Decker for more information. See page 48 for our 2019 summer camp offerings!
