We venture into this new season with a newfound energy and excitement as travel restrictions are lifted and the desire to explore turns to reality instead of a lucid dream. This go-around we find Roark and his band of merrymen venturing through the mystical state of Oaxaca, a vibrant cultural hub of creativity rooted in tradition and ancient heritage. With every turn, the distant sounds of local music grew closer, melding with the colors of decorative flags and the smells of local fare. Photography By Drew Smith “What we do on the rock and in the mountains returns us to a primitive past, a past in which we reach so desperately for something we can’t even define.” Legendary climber-mountaineer Peter Croft said that. And yet, definitions aside, there are those that do a pretty exemplary job of articulating the magic that adventurers reach for. One such human is the elusive climber and artist, Rhiannon Williams, a shy hurricane of creative genius. Often, it can be hard to find Rhiannon in the world if WiFi is not readily available. Living and creating art remotely from her van, you might find her around Yosemite, or in the deserts of Utah, or as far south as Argentinian Patagonia. Which all makes sense. She’s sailed around the Andaman and Java Seas. Began climbing in Thailand and Nepal. Learned to paint mandalas from a Nepali thangka master in Kathmandu… Indeed, there are no uninteresting chapters in the Book of Rhiannon. Beyond becoming a talented climber, her en plein air watercolor paintings — many sketched or painted mid-climb so many stories above the earth — have become renowned works. “The mountains lend themselves to free brushstrokes that depict the energy of the moment,” she says of the process. “Sometimes, the wind whips the paint across the paper, sometimes, there are dirt smudges, etc. They are living time capsules of the adventure.” Between said-adventures, we were lucky enough to catch her at groundlevel and learn from this amazingly introspective traveler. B: Often, the “outdoor/adventure space” has been represented by
men — on magazine covers, in ads, film — is that what you see today, or in the climbing world? Any changes?
R: I’ve seen a huge shift in the past few years. Women are pushing
the envelope in all areas of the sport. I would say there is still a lack of representation in specific realms such as alpine climbing and big wall
climbing but it’s moving in a direction where I feel there will be more equal representation in the near future. The more women we see out
there in these adventurous spaces, the more we can envision pushing
ourselves in that way. I like to depict bold landscapes and formations through a feminine creative lens to make that point.
B: Nice, and how’d you get into creating art and painting? R: Having spent many years as a competitive gymnast and feeling
stifled by rules, authority, and obedience, climbing showed me the pure joy of experiencing movement and landscape for those reasons alone. I was also learning how to trad climb with my friend, Amy, which was a
very powerful experience for me. Applying feminine colors and shapes to bold landscapes/formations is an expression of that experience. I continued to paint the landscapes that I was spending time in and began selling work here and there. After several years of gaining

It is said that the earth quakes in the metropolis of Oaxaca because the gods are trying to take back what nature owns. A Spanish mission rests in the evening center of the city. Red, green, and white flags are strung from buildings across avenues. Bats fly under street lamps as the stone walls rise into the Mexican night. The large wooden doors of the mission begin to rattle like thunder in the distance, it is a tremor. People slowly enter the street from businesses and restaurants; they wait patiently in the road for the Earth to settle. After one minute the ground is still, street lamps are swaying but the rattling doors of the mission are silent. After twenty minutes people casually and gradually re-enter the buildings. No one speaks of the disturbance. Waiters are now rushing between tables. Store clerks are back behind their registers. A woman files through textiles in a dress shop. The gods have spared Oaxaca this evening. In the marketplace during the day aisles are crowded shoulder to shoulder. Vendors selling machetes, pottery, and elaborate woven garments fill the tents. Further into the labyrinth there are endless leather shoes and sandals, followed by rows of butchers, and tucked in a back corner an herbal pharmacy. Bags of roots, leaves, and stems, claim a cure for every ailment possible. Candles are lit below altars of saints and serpents. An incense for all occasions mingle together in a deities delight of scent, but one must know how to use these properly and always with the upmost respect. The city is a place for social sounds, walls speak in Oaxaca. Murals and pasted political posters call out social injustices as paint mix with blood. A guitarist sounding from a mezcaleria belts out countryside songs as an evening storm encroaches. Move closer and peer in the doorway to see single church pews along each side wall. Step inside and notice behind the bar jars of mezcal with rattlesnakes and flora to fortify the classic fluid. As the rain falls harder people talk louder, the music gets louder, and the dancing starts. Finding a few fiending patrons, a young boy sits in the corner waiting out the storm with his tray of cigarettes and gum. If one ventures to the north of the state the urban sprawl dwindles quickly. Buzzards rest by the dozen on cactus, their ominous wingspread where the countryside opens up. Three hours of driving the roads wind and ascend into one lane highways overlooking steep cliffs. Landslides of giant fallen rock clutter the road every 10 miles. After six hours you may reach Huautla; the home of deceased shamaness Maria Sabina. Maria’s home is now inhabited by her surviving son and grandson. These shamans are the gatekeepers to the Sacred Mountain. CONTINUE READING ON ROARK.COM
