M.Arch Year 5 Summar y

My main interest in architecture is found in the creation of an undefinable sense of enjoyment in the built environment. I believe the best way to go about this task is by heavily utilizing datum, interstitial spaces, a ranging intensity of views, and by the thoughtful manipulation of the ground plane.

Indiana Street House Project description

Studio 804 is a student led graduate design build program at the University of Kansas. During an academic year, myself along with 27 of my peers collaborated to design and build 519 Indiana Street. My main contribution for Indiana House has been the design, procurement and fabrication of our solar array system, something critical for achieving LEED Platinum

Personal Desk Project description

09

With the advent of covid I aspired to design a desk to keep myself occupied and hone my woodworking skills. I aimed for a somewhat midcentury modern design while still incorporating traditional woodworking joinery techniques. This desk is composed of 30 mortise and tenon joints with the top beig dowel laminated. I was heavily inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s idea of Usonia as well as Malaysian architect Jimmy Lim and his intricate wooden homes.

KCDC Reptillian Pavilion Project description

13

In collaboration with the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center, our 3rd year studio was tasked with developing a shade pavilion. Our self-established goal was to create a playful structure which would complement the existing facility. Inspired by nature we established an outdoor shelter which acts to support educational activities while providing a place of refuge for families at KCDC.

Floor Lamp Project description

19

The Illuminating Engineering Society issues a lighting design challenge to local chapters every year. The only requirement was to utilize a cuttable led sheet and provide total diffusion for all 120 individual LED’s. The lamp in totality produces 3,960 lumens, the equivalent of about five 60 watt lightbulbs. A double layered muslin cloth provides complete diffusion and a comfortable viewing experience.

Ataraxia Project description

23

Once housing a diverse immigrant population, the Historic West Bottoms area has been in mostly disuse since 1951 due to natural disasters and economic woes. Today the area is physically cutoff from downtown. Despite its unique historic pallet, much of the area suffers from the perception of abandonment. Ataraxia, a mixeduse residential project, strives to incite a change in attitude towards the area by creating affordable housing, public recreational zones and stimulating local business development.

According to the Weather Channel climate disruption index, Kansas City is ranked 5th nationwide for cities most affected by climate change. The majority of the West Bottoms consists of a variety of impermeable surfaces, the temperature variance during the day is noticeable. The addition of greenspace is required for the creation of a healthy microclimate and living environment.

Dining Table Project description

31

Composed of African mahogany and hard maple, this piece replaces a well-used table of the same dimensions that had just gotten a little too wobbly. Two leaves can be attached via the sliding dovetails, which also serve as a connection between the top to the base. When not in use the leaves are stored across the tenons directly under the table. Because of this, the length of the leaves have been shortened to allow for adequate leg room when sitting at the ends.
