M . A rc h Yea r 5 Summar y

My main interest in architecture is found in the creation of an undefinable sense of enjoyment in the built environment. I believe the best way to go about this task is by heavily utilizing datum, interstitial spaces, a ranging intensity of views, and by the thoughtful manipulation of the ground plane.

Ataraxia Mixed-Use Residential West Bottoms, Kansas City, MO

Mission Statement

Once housing a diverse immigrant population, the Historic West Bottoms area has been in mostly disuse since 1951 due to natural disasters and economic woes. Today the area is phsyically cutoff from downtown. Despite it’s unique historic pallete, much of the area suffers from the perception of abandonment. Ataraxia, a mixed-use residential project, strives to incite a change in attitude towards the area by creating, affordable housing, public recreational zones, and stimulating local business development.

Urban Heat Island

According to the Weather Channel climate disruption index, Kansas City is ranked 5th nationwide for cities most affected by climate change. The majority of the West Bottoms consists of a variety of impermeable surfaces, the temperature variance during the day is noticeable. The addition of greenspace is required for the creation of a healthy microclimate and living environment.

Personal Design Challenge

With the advent of covid I wanted to design a desk to keep myself occupied. I aimed for a somewhat midcentury modern design while still incorporating traditional woodworking techniques. The desk is composed of 30 mortise and tenon joints. I was inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s idea of Usonia as well as Malaysian architect Jimmy Lim and his intricate wooden homes.

The Timber Innovation Alliance is focused on advancing the construction of tall mass timber structures as an environmentally friendly alternative to the waste heavy construction industry. The site is located in KCMO at West 16th and Wyandotte, just opposite the Kauffman Center. I was immediately drawn to a pure cubic geometry as a way of juxtaposing the adjacent flowing form of the Kauffman center. With mass timber as a requisite, I also attempt to pursue prefabrication. After the mid-review I decided to focus less on modularity and instead pursue a structure that only utilizes wood connections. The Ford Foundation in NYC was a heavy inspiration along with many of Kengo Kuma’s wooden buildings.

My final design took the atrium from earlier concepts and converted it into a vertical green wall that slices through the cube. The elevator shaft has been hidden at the ground level to help encourage users to take the stairs which weave in and out of the geometric green wall. The joists and girders are lap jointed and sit together, coplanar. The girders are attached to a quad column via friction fit wood dowels. A double skin facade was added along with on site water collection to help achieve net zero consumption. Jalousie windows pass through the double skin to still give users environmental control.

Composed of African mahogany and hard maple, this piece replaces a well-used table of the same dimensions that had just gotten a little too wobbly. Two leaves can be attached via the sliding dovetails, which also serve as a connection between the top to the base. When not in use the leaves are stored across the tenons directly under the table. Because of this, the length of the leaves have been shortened to allow for adequate leg room when sitting at the ends.

Although located just across the Kansas River in North Lawrence at the crossroads of Maple and North 2nd St., the site feels fairly isolated. My precedent study was the Lawrence Sports Pavilion. The pavilion has the main event space set one level down from the entrance, above which there is a walking path overlooking the space below. There is something intriguing about the difference in elevation that is hard to express. This feeling is what I tried to capture for the Lawrence Performance Center.

The main performance area is entirely visible from the centralized cafe, which will be a large source of outside attention. There are three main entrances, the north entrance connects to parking, the east entrance is easily accessible by foot traffic from the surrounding neighborhoods, and the west entrance has been designed to encourage bicycle traffic from the nearby bike levee trail. The ramp surrounding the performance space provides 360 views while granting everyone ample opportunity to observe performances.

The Illuminating Engineering Society issues a lighting design challenge to local chapters every year. The only requirement was to utilize a cuttable led sheet and provide total diffusion for all 120 individual led’s. The lamp in totality produces 3,960 lumens, the equivalent of about five 60 watt lightbulbs. A double layered muslin cloth provides complete diffusion.

Pioneer Cemetery Meditation Chapel + Columb

site overview & chapel location

Pioneer Cemetery is a historic burial site located on KU’s west campus that was formally established in 1854. Many civil war casualties are buried here including victims from Quantrill’s Raid, Bleeding Kansas, and soldiers from the 13th Wisconsin volunteer infantry. After being acquired by the university, cremated burials of certain dignified alumni and faculty members has been permitted.

final layout

My concept from the beginning was simple, connecting the buried individuals from the earth to the heavens. I was working with a site survey commissioned by the university, however the survey did not show the surrounding area which was holding my design back. After extending the site on trace paper it was clear the best position for the chapel was to the south, which also meant no existing trees had to be removed. The hedges and pathways took their shape from the geometry of the chapel.

Marais Des Cygnes Birdhide

site overview

study models

Description Marais Des Cygnes is a national wildlife refuge located in Linn county Kansas. The site takes place at the south east corner of the reserve and is open to visitors, mostly bird watchers. The area consists of a small body of water that frequently overflows into the surrounding wetlands, which in turn are enclosed by a dense bottomland hardwood forest. With over 317 bird species that have been spotted on the reserve, it is abundant with wildlife, especially during mating and migratory seasons.

Symbolic of a bird taking flight, the structure sits right at the threshold between forest and wetlands. As you walk down the hundred yard forested path to the entrance you experience the conditions of a bird, trapped and searching for freedom. As you break through the dense forest you take off in vertical motion experiencing all the wetlands have to offer.
