Slipways project boost for Port of Grimsby aids offshore industry A £1.8 million project to completely overhaul vessel repair facilities at Port of Grimsby East is being brought forward to aid the offshore wind farm industry , helping the town further capitalise on the economic opportunity. The 80-year-old slipways are to be refurbished, with the focal point a new 200 tonne marine hoist – nearly 17m high and more than 11m wide – capable of handling almost anything that enters the lock gates. It means that not only will Grimsby be a hub for offshore wind farm servicing and maintenance, but the facilities will be in place to tend to the vessels, too. Grimsby Fish Dock Enterprises (GFDE) has secured matchfunding from the Growing the Humber Regional Growth Fund pot, and is working closely with North East Lincolnshire Council, Grimsby Slipway Ltd and Grimsby Ship Repairers and Engineers Association. Martyn Boyers, Chief Executive of GFDE, said: “We have collectively recognised the requirement to improve the facility in the light of the change to the type of vessels that now come in to Grimsby.
“The current system was commissioned in 1935 and has been a great servant, but it is not financially viable to maintain it. We have decided to pursue a modern alternative, which will be a boat hoist able to lift out of the water the majority of vessels that come into Grimsby now. It will also continue to provide facilities for the fishing vessels. This will create a facility that will attract more vessels into Grimsby, create more commercial activity and jobs. Grimsby historically has a skills base in marine engineering and this can only increase as the facility adds to the potential for work here. It is a significant commitment by this company and North East Lincolnshire Council, backed by the confidence in offshore
renewables which has been underpinned by recent announcements by Dong Energy.” As reported, Race Bank offshore wind farm will now be built, operated and maintained from the town, following the completion of the far smaller Westermost Rough. The company has today announced it is looking to develop a significant base at Able Marine Energy Park at North Killingholme too. In Port of Grimsby East, two 80m runways will extend out from the quayside, with the giant marine hoist and travel lift using them as a track. The vessels will then be brought onto the strengthened quay, allowing multiple vessels to be worked on at once, as opposed to the current single position. Nigel Stinson, Chairman of Grimsby Ship Repairers and Engineers Association, and director of R&N Services, one of seven companies directly involved with the association, said: “This is a big step forward locally for the industry. We are very hopeful with all that is happening here, as well as with Able and Siemens in Hull.” Mr Stinson said not only was the infrastructure old, but highly inefficient, making the current offer uncompetitive. “A lot of vessels go elsewhere for the services we can offer,” he said. Marine consulting engineer Beckett Rankine has been appointed, and is working with the local authority and GFDE on engineering, procurement and construction. Survey work has been completed and tenders will be sought for the work still required which will be expected to take 10 months. Several buildings and existing plinths and rails will be demolished, with new workshop, offices, welfare and storage facilities built. Recent years have seen Centrica, Dong Energy, E.ON and RES all arrive, aided by turbine manufacturers Siemens and Vestas, and a wealth of contractors, with specialist vessel operators supporting. More than 40 vessels a day have been using Port of Grimsby East at peak times, with construction of Westermost Rough, Race Bank and Humber Gateway taking place alongside the operations of Lincs, Lynn and Inner Dowsing, as well as initial expeditions to Hornsea and Dogger Bank. Cllr Oxby said: “The upgrading of the slipways and facilities is critical for Grimsby in terms of being able to offer an essential service to companies who have chosen to locate here, particularly the offshore wind companies who need to maintain and service their transfer vessels. “Major companies have chosen Grimsby for their long term base, and I’m pleased to be able to support this great project, in response.” This is one of a series of improvements led by GFDE, with modernised lock gates to improve capacity one of the major steps forward, together with outer berth crew transfer facilities.

Servocore Amc Receives Lloyd’s Register Type Approval
ServoCore, the commercial-off-the-shelf alarm, monitoring and control solution (AMC) Servowatch Systems introduced last year, has today received type approval from classification society Lloyd’s Register. UK-based Servowatch, a business unit of the Electrical & Automation division of India’s Larsen & Toubro, adapted the technology inherent to its bespoke automation and integration solutions supplied to the naval sector to meet the commercial requirements of the merchant shipping industry. Certification follows the successful type approval in July of SevoSentinel, Servowatch’s advanced embedded computer module for marine applications where more extensive system integration and platform management is required. Successful type approval of the computer module was crucial to Servowatch receiving LR certification for the ServoCore solution. Wayne Ross, Chief Executive Officer, Servowatch Systems, said: “To have received LR type approval for both systems in the space of just four weeks is a remarkable achievement for Servowatch. Not only does it mark an important step forward in the development of systems automation and integration for the merchant ship sector, it also gives shipowners the confidence needed to benefit from high-end system integration without the high costs.
www.dockyard-mag.com
“The development of ServoCore means that we can deliver the same functionality and flexibility as our tailor-made ServoFusion range but for significantly less investment, making it a more commercially attractive AMC option to operators of standard tonnage.”

Dometic Announces New Engineering Team For Ship-Wide Ventilation
Marine-industry veterans Neil Norton and Nelson Frolund lead dedicated team delivering custom solutions for boat builders, integrators and owners worldwide
World leading marine equipment manufacturer Dometic has announced a new, dedicated team of ship-wide ventilation experts, who specialise in providing customised design, engineering support and consultation services to the global marine industry. Led by Dometic application engineers Neil Norton and Nelson Frolund, the Dometic Marine ship-wide ventilation team will focus exclusively on designing and implementing installation of smoke and fire dampers, axial fans and blowers, mist eliminators and accessories for boat builders, integrators and owners. The products are designed to improve safety, extend engine life, optimise performance and efficiency for oil and gas vessels, tugs, OSVs, military vessels, ferry boats, cruise ships, superyachts, crew boats, pilot boats, patrol boats, fireboats and more.
The first UN aid ship to arrive in war-torn Yemen for more than four months was under the armed protection of ESC Global Security while it unloaded more than 7,000 tonnes of food and medicine in Aden.
The ship docked in the devastated port city of Aden with ESCGS personnel onboard ensuring the safety of the crew and cargo during the offloading and the UN food agency described the arrival as a “major breakthrough” since the internal war in Yemen began in March. The UN’s World Food Programme (WFP), which chartered the ship, had tried repeatedly in past weeks to deliver aid to the wartorn city but failed because of security concerns. Early in July a humanitarian ceasefire was declared by the UN but failed to hold and the World Food Programme recently described the truce as the “final hope” to deliver desperately needed aid. With the region just “one step away from famine” according to the UN, ESC Global Security was appointed to protect the ship on the hazardous journey into Aden. Jaanus Rahumägi, CEO of ESC Global Security, believes the deployment of armed security was vital to ensure the safe delivery of these vital food supplies and medicines. “The internal conflict in Yemen and the dangerous conditions for shipping arriving in Aden was the driving factor in ESC Global Security being contracted to protect the ship. Each operation is significantly different from others but we understand the needs of the maritime industry in protecting not only vessels and crew, but also the cargoes and dockside operations surrounding such ventures. Our prime concerns are safety and operational integrity. In this case it required confidence and experience which we provided for the ultimate benefit of thousands of desperate people in Yemen.”
News In Brief.... Renovated Marion Dufresne II sets sail on time
“The excellent cooperation between the yard and the vessel’s crew was important in this project’s successful planning, coordination and execution. We rebuilt a large part of the vessel within 4 months to extend her life by 20 years. The client was satisfied with our performance, cooperation and the end result,” explains Head of Marketing & Sales at Damen Shiprepair Dunkerque, Khalil Benjelloul. Mr Benjelloul sums up the work carried out by the yard. “We replaced the vessel’s most important scientific apparatus, the multi-beam sonar. We scrapped the existing equipment, rebuilt the hull and installed a new gondola and control room. Furthermore we completely renewed the ILOT capstan, a system used to take sea water samples, and installed new equipment. The hull has been blasted and repainted as well as some of the ballast tanks. The vessel’s accommodation areas have been redone in cooperation with the client’s subcontractor, this included laboratory facilities used by IPEV scientists. Marion Dufresne II can accommodate 114 passengers or scientific researchers and 46 crew.” Besides her research and scientific capabilities, this multi-purpose vessel has a heli-deck and can be used as a supply vessel to transport containers and fuel to remote areas.
Tug operators Smit Lamnalco Towage (Australia) Pty Ltd. (SL) and Svitzer Australia (Svitzer) have entered into a three-year tug-outsourcing Service Level Agreement for the Ports of Newcastle, Sydney (Port Botany) and Melbourne. The deal follows discussions between the two parties with the purpose of seeking to ensure the optimal utilisation of existing towage vessels in each of the relevant ports.
“Under the SLA Svitzer will provide towage services to SL on an arms‐length basis. This will ensure that both Parties are able to continue competing for customers and to carry out harbour towage operations consistent with the requirements of the relevant ports, with a view to improving the productivity and efficiency in each of the ports and the port‐related supply chain,” SL said in an emailed statement.

Given the rise in digital commerce, DSM Dyneema has stepped up legal actions against online marketplaces by more aggressively enforcing the removal of advertisements in which the Dyneema® trademark is used without DSM’s permission. Some of the web portals have featured thousands of adverts infringing the Dyneema® brand. Citing just-released data, DSM Dyneema is pleased to report that its collaboration with the online marketplace owners has led to the removal of more than 22,000 adverts that had been illegally using the Dyneema® trademark. It is notable that this enforcement activity has been continuing for a year, and these numbers show that continuous and diligent action pays off. “Although Chinese websites are often notorious for offering counterfeit products,” noted Nathali Donatz, DSM Dyneema’s Director of Branding & Communications, “a number of online marketplaces – such as Alibaba.com – have shown a cooperative attitude toward trademark owners such as DSM.” The Alibaba group has a strict approach toward parties that infringe multiple times. If the offending party does not “clean up” its actions, it will be banned from placing advertisements on their websites.

Versatile workboat is a windfarm winner Delta Marine’s vessel Whalsa Lass has demonstrated its versatility during recently completed works on the large windfarm off the coast of Grimsby UK for one of the ‘Big 6’ energy contractors. The windfarm consists of 73 Vesta V112 3MW turbines located in water depths of some 15m and is now providing electricity sufficient to power up to 170,000 homes. When the Shetland based operator chartered its Damen 2611 Multicat for a basic remit to serve as anchor handler for the cable laying vessel it had no idea what further scope of services the vessel would be called upon to perform. The 26m Whalsa Lass features an 11.5m beam for great stability and a shallow 2.25m draft, advantageous for bringing cables to shore. Three Caterpillar C32 TTA main engines generate 1,902 bkW to provide a powerful 37 tonne bollard pull and a speed of 10 knots. A 100 tonne winch and twin Heila3 SL 230t/m knuckleboom cranes further add to a specification which informed client and operator alike that the vessel was capable of making a broader contribution to the project than was first envisioned.
www.dockyard-mag.com
Work started with Whalsa Lass handling a six by 7.5 tonne delta flipper anchor spread for the cable lay vessel, with the anchors pre-laid and the Multicat hooking up to cable lay vessel wires in up to 3 knots of tide. Soon Whalsa Lass was delivering water and provisions to other project vessels within the 25sq/km work area. She was then conducting cardinal buoy inspections, retrieving and returning them to shore for maintenance and subsequently re-deploying them. She was called upon for the delivery of cable protection systems and the deployment of rock bags over cables in shallow water, deploying a 4 tonne bag every 14 minutes. She could be equipped as a dive support platform, with a full dive spread encompassing decompression chamber, welfare, quads, a dive shack and three point mooring, all whilst still conducting anchor handling duties with the dive spread onboard. This allowed her to work with the divers moving boulders clear of the cable lay route. A full ROV spread was also brought onboard, with a 20’ ROV container, control shack, provision of 120A power from ship’s generators and three point mooring, again whilst concurrently still anchor handling. Also performed were PLGR works, dragging a grapple train along the cable route checking for other obstructions which could affect the subsequent cable lay. Whalsa Lass was even called upon to salvage containers lost overboard from a passing cargo vessel which were drifting and posed a collision risk to the windfarm, then transporting them ashore.
8
Delta Marine created method statements, risk assessments and storyboards for all the above tasks, reducing the workload for the client’s management and minimising delay to works proceeding. Delta sourced all rigging and anchors, replaced all worn or damaged components and provided a weekly inventory to the client detailing the location and condition of each individual component. Delta even extended the push knees at Whalsa Lass’s bow, allowing crew transfer vessels to push on for optimised safe passage of project personnel whilst on site.
Such comprehensive efforts by Whalsa Lass and Delta Marine did not go unnoticed. The client’s cable package manager told Delta: ‘All your efforts have been successful and executed safely and professionally. It was a pleasure having you and your team involved in mobilisation and execution meetings to gain your advice and input. Your team’s positive attitude and ambitious nature have prevented vessel and project down time on a number of occasions. We always knew that the task would be executed professionally when given to Whalsa Lass.
‘From the entire construction team we would like to thank you and your team for all your hard work and efforts over the past year.’

Strainstall successfully designs and delivers a load measurement solution for the world’s largest floating wharf at Port of Dampier.
Industry News
● Strainstall commissioned to develop bespoke load measurement solution for the Dampier Floating Deck ● Provides critical data analysis of wharf performance in challenging marine environment ● System is world’s first load monitoring solution configured for a floating structure Strainstall, part of James Fisher and Sons plc, was commissioned to design and deliver a load monitoring system for the Dampier Floating Deck - the world’s largest floating wharf at the port of Dampier, Western Australia.
The wharf, located in some of the most challenging marine operational conditions, is a new concept in jetty extension and Strainstall’s bespoke solution has been designed to monitor the load between the floating deck and the main cargo jetty piles during mooring operations. The system offers reassurance during critical operations by providing engineers with detailed data and analysis on the performance of the structure, as well as indicating when load thresholds have been exceeded to significantly increase operational safety.
“For our customers, this means that a vessel can now come to the Port of Dampier without fear of berth shortages, and will not only be able to complete a cargo exchange but also take on all of the consumables and fluids it needs in one stop, rather than have to move or endure a lengthy wait,” said Damian Burton, regional manager at Patrick Bulk Port Services – owner of the floating wharf. “It’s a welcome and decisive market advantage that our Pilbara-based team is embracing.”
The fully bespoke system comprises 64, 200 tonne diaphragm load cells which feed into Strainstall’s analogue to digital load cell amplifiers (recently developed for use with TLP tendon tension monitoring systems), a full software package and a traffic light overload warning system. Operating in real-time, a radio data link will also enable port staff to permanently monitor the status of the deck from a remote location in the port allowing any remedial action to be taken when necessary. Strainstall’s monitoring system manager for the region, Dr Phil Cutter, said “We are pleased to have worked on this project, in what was a world first. This is a great example of our ability to provide a bespoke monitoring system for projects in demanding environments and one of this scale really is something special.” The wharf will extend the length of the existing jetty by an additional 100m and allow two platform supply vessels to berth at the same time to support offshore operations in the region. Dampier is a cyclone risk area, which was a key consideration in the design of the monitoring system that was engineered to withstand such weather conditions. In the event of a cyclone, the wharf’s brackets can be retracted and the structure can be towed away to a safe mooring area. “The Dampier project has seen the adaption of some of our cutting-edge technologies, reconfigured and applied to this floating structure.” explained Dr Cutter. A number of James Fisher group companies have had significant involvement in the Dampier Floating Deck project, including Maritime Engineers which was instrumental in the design and motions analysis of the floating wharf. Fendercare Australia also supplied 22 Yokohama fenders to the project.

Gemini is being built in the North Sea. The project consists of two areas of 34 km2 and is located 85 km off the coast of Groningen. Each monopile is designed for its specific location in the wind project. Depending on water depth, they vary in length from 59 to 73 m. The monopiles have a diameter of 7 m, and a wall thickness of 7 to 11 cm. During the three-year construction period, a wide range of equipment including Van Oord’s specialized offshore wind vessels will be deployed. An estimated workforce of 500 will be involved on the project.

Polymer solutions to improve the efficiency of water systems Fluid handling equipment may suffer from multiple problems including physical and mechanical damage as well as general or localized erosion and corrosion. These problems are linked to decreased efficiency and poor performance, leading to increasing operational costs. Minimising performance deterioration is therefore an important factor for pump manufacturers and end users. Indeed, hydraulic losses account for most of the efficiency decrease (9% for a mixed flow pump to 20% for radial flow). Coating technology can help in decreasing these losses, increasing the pump’s performance and reducing operational costs.
Hydrophobic coatings for pump efficiency improvement In pumping equipment, it is possible to reduce power consumption and improve the hydraulic properties by changing the pump surface finish. In fact, the loss of efficiency is caused by frictional forces created between the fluid and the walls, the acceleration and the slowing down of the fluid, and the change in the fluid flow direction. The smoother the pump walls, the more fluid turbulence will be reduced, thus reducing the energy required for the pump to move the fluid through the hydraulic passage.

reduction in flow resistance and friction, the hydraulic performance of the pump can be increased. Graph 2 shows the performance curves of a single stage, end suction centrifugal pump with a 250 mm suction and discharge branches before and after being coated with Belzona 1341.
Graph 2: Performance curve of a new pump before and after coating with Belzona 1341
This test was performed by the British National Engineering Laboratories (N.E.L.) and the pump, in uncoated condition and running at 1,300 rpm, was originally found to deliver 875 m3/h at 26.5 meters head and with overall peak efficiency of 83.5% (overall efficiency defined as the ratio of water power output to mechanical power input at the shaft).
possible, pump manufacturers seek to create the smoothest surface possible to reduce the turbulence of the fluid. This can be obtained by the polishing of the selected metal, such as stainless steel; however, this method is extremely time consuming and expensive.
Testing of the Belzona 1341 coated pump gave a maximum of 6% increase in the peak efficiency and a reduction in power consumption of 5.1 kWh at duty point. Assuming a 5,000 hours operating cycle/ annum, the power savings over this period would amount to 25,500 kWh.
A smooth surface finish can also be obtained by applying an erosion-corrosion resistant efficiency coating on the pump’s volute and impeller. These polymeric coatings are specifically designed to improve efficiency on fluid handling systems and protect metals against the effects of erosion-corrosion. Their unique combination of properties such as self-leveling application, hydrophobicity and hydraulic smoothness makes these coatings ideal candidates for lining the hydraulic passages of pumps. These coatings possess a low electronic affinity towards water molecules and result in a smooth glossy finish once applied onto a metallic surface. This allows the water or other aqueous solutions to easily slide on the surface of the coating.
Similar results have been measured by many pump manufacturers around the world, and feedback on industrial equipment protected with this coating show that it is possible to achieve a return in excess of new pump.
The smoothness of these hydrophobic epoxy coatings is demonstrated on Graph 1 below, where the surface condition of Belzona 1341 (Supermetaglide), a high performance coating designed to improve efficiency of pumps, pipes, valves and other fluid handling equipment while protecting them from the effects of erosion-corrosion, was measured as fifteen times smoother than polished stainless steel. As a result of the smoother surface and

The Robosub competition was started 18 years ago to advance the development of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV).
successfully completed.
Teams from high schools, colleges, and universities from around the world compete in this annual event. Participants learn how to work together to create an autonomous system that will accomplish a variety of challenging tasks. The underwater vehicles they construct must navigate a complex course which involves visual and acoustic sensing elements, small and large object manipulation, dropping markers into specific bins, and launching torpedoes at particular targets; all without human control or intervention. Points are awarded for the number and difficulty of the tasks
A newcomer to Robosub is the SASAUV team from Shanghai American School, an international high school based in China. Their group is divided into three parts, each responsible for different tasks; navigation and software, hardware, and multimedia. At a time when many modern AUVs are exploring new and sometimes radical exterior designs, their design philosophy is the underwater vehicle should have the shape of a conventional submarine. To accelerate the development of the AUV’s acoustic sensing capability, the team used parts of JW Fishers PR-1 pinger receiver, a device that finds acoustic
Other teams using Fishers acoustic devices to help design their AUVs for Robosub are from Kasetsart University in Thailand, University of Colorado Boulder, National University of Singapore, and India’s Underwater Robotics Society. Other educational institutions using Fishers pingers in their projects are the University of Delaware, University of Texas Austin, University of South Florida, Texas A&M, Lester B. Pearson College, Inha University in China, Coastal Carolina University. Louisiana State University, and Pukyong National University in Korea. Co-sponsors are the Association of Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) and the U.S. Office of Naval Research (ONR). The goal is to challenge a new generation of engineers to accomplish realistic missions in an underwater environment and get young people excited about careers in science, technology, engineering and math. The hope is that Robosub will inspire these young men and women to pursue STEM careers, and create opportunities to enter the rapidly expanding field of maritime robotics.
One returning competitor is North Carolina State University Underwater Robotics Club, a student run organization that designs and builds autonomous submersibles. Their vehicle Seawolf was designed to be capable of maneuvering through an underwater obstacle course, retrieving and dropping payloads, and navigating to locations marked by an acoustic pinger. To test their vehicle’s ability to maneuver to an acoustic beacon, the team needed a pinger for trials. They choose JW Fishers SFP-1 single frequency pinger for its low cost, and because its specifications met the Robosub requirements. The SFP-1 transmits a preset frequency between 22 and 37.5 kHz which can be detected at a distance of several thousand feet.
pingers and guides the operator to the pinger’s location. Team captain Kylin Daniel reported, “The equipment JW Fishers supplied was absolutely phenomenal to work with, and we plan on using additional equipment from Fishers next year.” He went to say, “Although we were unable to accomplish all of the required tasks, our team still managed to score more points that many notable college teams. This project has given us high schoolers an incredible experience, and we look forward to competing again in the future.”

Business as usual on Amsterdam’s canals Time to comply with new emissions output regulations has now expired for Amsterdam’s famous sightseeing ferries, but, thanks to Volvo Penta, it’s still business as usual on the canals of the Dutch capital — and now NOx emissions are down by as much as 45%. In 2005 Amsterdam’s local governing body laid down an ultimatum for operators of the city’s famous glass sightseeing water ferries — as of January 1 2015, all boats of this kind had to either be fitted with a repowered engine and aftertreatment system, or replaced by an electric alternative. Terlouw Rotterdam, the Volvo Penta Center in the Netherlands, worked with Slot Jachtbouw, an Amsterdam shipyard, between 2012 and 2014 to systematically swap out many of the old engines and replace them with repowered new ones that are fitted with STT Emtec’s marine DNOx® after-treatment system. Since repowering ended at the beginning of this year, a total of 50 out of 150 canal boats operating on Amsterdam’s waterways are powered by Volvo Penta D5A TA marine diesel engines. Ferry companies now enjoying the benefits of a Volvo Penta engine include Canal Company, Blue Boat, Rederij Kooij and Rederij Lovers. “The canal boat operators needed to find an engine and aftertreatment combination that met the requirements of the local authorities and didn’t result in a long repowering process that would cause costly downtime. Volvo Penta and STT Emtec proved to be a winning combination.” Said Jeroen van Liefland, sales manager for Terlouw Rotterdam Cleaning up Amsterdam
www.dockyard-mag.com
The Volvo Penta D5A TA engine is a highly reliable, type-approved marine diesel engine that boasts low exhaust emissions and excellent fuel efficiency. Because of the high level of tourist trade in the Dutch capital, canal boat operators required an engine that they could trust — and Volvo Penta offered just that.
22
Prior to the repowering operation — which fitted the ferries with 4-cylinder engines — the ferries ran on 6-cylinder engines. This additional power was less of a help and more of a hindrance; because the speed limit on the Amsterdam canals is only 6 kph, the sightseeing vessels had a very low specific load profile. But, thanks to Volvo Penta’s engines, which are smaller with a lower maximum output, the ferries can now run at a higher load at low speed limits, resulting in higher exhaust temperatures. These high exhaust temperatures allowed for the use of the DNOx® aftertreatment system, developed by STT Emtec.
The aftertreatment system
The D5 engines were fitted with a marine DNOx® system, which reduces NOx by diluting the charge air with recirculated exhaust gas. The amount of NOx being produced since the repowering project has significantly declined — thanks to Volvo Penta and fellow Swedish company STT Emtec. The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system operates with a patented EGR value, which precisely controls the exhaust and inlet air mixture. In addition, the CCT active uses the on-board fuel as a reacting agent to help control the soot loading in the diesel particulate filter (DPF). Soot can be burned automatically when exhaust temperatures are high enough but, given the low speed limit in the city, which prevent the exhausts from consistently reaching high temperatures, the CCT active controls soot buildup at lower temperatures. Using the system, the engine’s carbon monoxide, hydro carbon and carbon particle emissions are all reduced by up to 90%, and NOx emissions are reduced by up to 45%. Together, Volvo Penta and STT Emtec tested the D5 engine with and without the DNOx® system, and found the results to be exceptional. The D5 engine’s lower fuel consumption and cleaner performance, coupled with STT Emtec’s advanced system, are helping Amsterdam work towards its goal of becoming a zero emission city by 2025.

Will the delivery in 2017 of the world’s first seabed mining ship to Nautilus Minerals herald a new Klondike, opening up a new market for the shipping industry? When China’s Fujian Mawei shipyard delivers its high-end PSV (production support vessel) to Dubai-based Marine Assets Corporation in 2017 for deployment under charter to the Solwara 1 site in the Bismarck Sea, it won’t be the ‘black stuff’ this revolutionary vessel will help exploit but something much more alluring – gold. The 0.11km2 Solwara 1 project, 30km offshore Papua New Guinea (PNG) and the first ever deep sea mine, is expected to open up a hitherto unexplored frontier for the extraction of base and precious metals and, potentially, a lucrative new market for seabed mining vessels.
Yet despite these seemingly favourable factors, together with international declarations permitting the mining of the seabed for the “benefit of mankind”, falling metal prices and technological infancy has put large scale seabed mining on hold – until now. Today, perhaps a consequence of the recent technological advances made in offshore oil and gas EDP, the technology is now readily available to make seabed mining economically and environmentally viable. Regulations are also being developed for this new industry by a number of countries.
An offshore gold rush has long been mooted given the rich abundance of minerals in the peaks, valleys and plains of the seafloor and higher ore concentrations.
“Given that 70 per cent of the planet is covered by water and that significant high-grade mineral resources have been identified on the ocean floor, the mining industry is prepared to move offshore in much the same way that oil and gas industry moved offshore 40-50 years ago,” said Mike Johnston, the CEO of Nautilus Minerals, the Canadian mining contractor that will charter the world’s first seabed mining support vessel.
What’s more, the cost of developing a seafloor mine is significantly less than a land-based equivalent, due to reduced machinery and development costs. There is no direct impact on communities and mining infrastructure can be easily relocated.
“Together with the scientific community we have carried out extensive research into understanding the environment at Solwara 1 and have developed mitigation strategies to reduce the impact of mining operations, in particular the fully enclosed riser and lifting system that ensures the
copper resource taken from the seafloor never comes in contact with the seawater above the mining operation.” Once bulk cutters have cut the seabed rocks to manageable sizes, the mineralised slurry is pumped though the fully-enclosed riser pipe to the production supply vessel on the surface, where the ore is separated. The Fujian Mawei yard, in China has now started work on the ShipTech Solutionsdesigned vessel. Based on a large offshore construction vessel, the 227m long, 40m wide the first of a kind vessel will be built to ABS Comfort Class rules. To accommodate an array of heavy lift equipment topside, the 68,000t vessel’s deck has a 1000m2 working area strengthened to 7.5t/m2 to accommodate one 200 tonne subsea crane, a 100 tonne ship-to-shore crane and two 20t deck cranes.

John Knudsen, Rolls-Royce, President – Commercial Marine, said: “This multiengine delivery to long-standing customers Fujian Mawei and MAC is a major step for our new medium-speed engines and we are exceptionally proud that the first Bergen B33:45 gensets have been selected to power this pioneering ship. They offer a 20 per cent increase in power per cylinder, while fuel consumption, emissions and through-life operating costs are substantially reduced. “Deep sea mining is an exciting new industry and we are pleased to be

(6 cyl B33:45 illustrated) at the forefront of a new chapter in underwater exploration. Demand for natural resources continues to rise as developing countries emerge and land resources becoming increasingly stretched. With our extensive pedigree in the offshore oil and gas sector, we look forward to working with Marine Assets Corporation and Nautilus Minerals in enabling them to become first movers in the extraction of valuable minerals from the seabed.” The vessel will operate under a five-year time-charter with options to extend or purchase the vessel. It will serve as the operational base for the joint venture (Solwara 1 JV), formed by Nautilus and the Independent State of Papua New Guinea’s nominee, Eda Kopa (Solwara), a wholly owned subsidiary of Petromin PNG Holdings, which has taken a 15
per cent stake in the Solwara 1 mine by contributing $120 million towards operational costs. Nautilus expects that mining the Solwara 1 site will take three to four years, with an annual yield of 1.3 million tonnes of ore. Having a moveable infrastructure means as other prospective deposits are identified the mining operations can be moved to the new site. “Our goal is to set the standard in how companies extract minerals from the ocean and ensure the continued sustainability of this valuable resource for the future,” said Johnston. Marine Assets Corporation’s Chief Operating Officer, Mark Reeves said: “We are not so familiar with the mining industry itself but since becoming involved in this project it is certainly apparent that there is huge potential in subsea mining.
“For MAC, this is very exciting to be building a ‘world’s first’ again, and we have a long history with Rolls-Royce and Bergen equipment, so we know the vessel will perform well.”

“Nautilus is the market leader in this segment and I believe Solwara 1 is the first project that has actually come off the drawing board. Obviously these water depths are unknown territory for most of us, but site surveys and sampling has proven that the subsea mining sector can be extremely lucrative compared to land mining, with mineral content per tonne of ore considerably higher.

Dredging
Largest South African dredger launched Royal IHC has launched the 5,500m³ trailing suction hopper dredger Ilembe from its shipyard at Kinderdijk in the Netherlands. The dredger is being built for Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA), the national port authority of South Africa.
Ilembi measures 101.5m LOA with a beam of 22.4m and a draft of only 6m. It will be capable of dredging to depths of 30m through a single 900mm diameter dredge pipe. A total installed power of 7,660kW will enable it to sail at 11.9 knots. As one of the five operating divisions of Transnet SOC Ltd, TNPA is responsible for
the safe, effective and efficient economic functioning of the South African national port system. It manages eight commercial ports along the country’s 2,954km coastline in a ‘landlord’ capacity, with two main service categories: the provision of port infrastructure; and the provision of maritime services such as dredging and marine operations.
IHC was selected as the supplier after a successful submission into an open tender process for what will be the largest dredging vessel of its kind operating in South Africa. The contract for the design, construction and delivery of the vessel was signed between TNPA and IHC in March 2014. The keel was laid on 8 January 2015 at Kinderdijk and the vessel will be delivered to its homeport at Durban in early 2016. The new vessel will join TNPA’s existing fleet of IHC built vessels, which includes the 4,200m3 trailer Isandlwana (delivered in 2010) and the grab hopper dredger Italeni (delivered in 2014). The new dredger will be deployed to work mainly in the international seaports of South Africa, but may also be deployed elsewhere on the continent.

Damen DOP250 dredge pumps on Brazilian harbour construction project
28
Damen delivered two complete DOP packages to Acciona Infraestructuras, S.A., a Spanish construction company. The DOP submersible dredge pumps are being used in a large harbour construction project in Brazil. The DOP pumps empty concrete caissons to be able to reposition these as a breakwater. This is a job perfectly suited to the DOP, which fits into confined spaces.
DOP250 has a mixture capacity of 1,250 m3/h, and is used to empty each partition of the caisson. The sand is put to good use as it is pumped to a nearby beach.
The harbour construction project, at Sao Joao de Barra, 150 miles North of Rio de Janeiro, started a few years ago. Acciona was awarded the contract for the engineering, design and construction of two artificial breakwaters. Acciona decided to use its pioneering system of concrete caissons built in an auxiliary dock. Five of these sand-filled caissons now have to be emptied to be moved to their final position, together with another 37 caissons which have already been positioned.
The caisson job is another example of the versatility of Damen DOP submersible dredge pumps.
Damen has delivered two DOP packages, which both include a DOP submersible dredge pump, type DOP250, a 403 kW diesel hydraulic power pack, a separate diesel driven jetwater pump feeding the dredge pump’s suction head plus a number of hoses, connections and spares. The DOP is connected to a crane. Each
The DOP submersible dredge pumps arrived on site mid-January. A Damen Field Service Engineer assisted during the startup and instructed the crew. All caissons were finished and emptied by the middle of May. Then Acciona finished the repositioning of the caissons and completed the breakwater construction.

Grangemouth dredging In order to accommodate larger vessels the Scottish Port of Grangemouth has commissioned a feasibility study to assess the viability and cost of deepening the shipping channels within the port. Located on the Firth of Forth, Grangemouth is Scotland’s premier container port and the study for the deepening of the entrance channel is has been commissioned in response to changes in the container shipping market where there is a trend towards larger capacity feeder vessels which require deeper water to access the port’s quaysides.
www.dockyard-mag.com
“Some vessel sizes have increased significantly over the past 10 years from around 300-500 TEU per ship to modern feeder container ships that have a 1,700 TEU capacity. The bulk cargo ships that use the port have also increased in size and require a deeper draft,” said a
32
spokesperson for the port. This deepening project, which would see the dock water depth taken from 7.5 metres to over 10 metres, is expected to entail a multimillion pound capital investment and would take around three years to complete. Grangemouth has experienced increased siltation in its entrance channels in recent years that has required maintenance dredging. In order to minimise the dredging requirements, the port commissioned the consultancy company APBmer to undertake a study of the historical siltation and dredging work. The result of this study was to find solutions that would minimise the dredging costs. In addition to these projects Grangemouth, which is owned by Forth Ports Ltd, is undertaking a project to increase the terminal’s capacity for storing containers. This involves significant surface upgrading works on an area of some 6,325 square metres. The investment is designed to increase the busy container terminal’s total capacity to
12,000 TEUs, a 50% increase since 2005 which is claimed, will deliver operational efficiencies to its landside and shipside operations. The resurfacing at the terminal will see the construction of a heavy duty concrete pavement and other works which will create additional storage lanes for laden containers in addition to improved equipment access to landside and shipside operations. This work is expected to be completed and ready for business in October 2015 and represents the second phase of a five year investment plan to improve the storage capabilities of the terminal. It is expected that the capacity will grow by a further 10% over the 5 year period in line with market demand. Grangemouth currently handles over 9 million tonnes of cargo per year with much of it being generated by the nearby Grangemouth refinery. Considerable quantities of dry bulk cargo and timber are also handled at the port.

training of our employees and workforce partners. We fully recognise the importance of a highly-skilled and competent workforce to the continued success and growth of the business.
In anticipation of the arrival of five of the world’s largest cranes at the Port of Liverpool, UK in the autumn, Peel Ports has introduced a state-ofthe-art ‘virtual’ training simulator from Swiss automation specialist ABB, designed to ensure all operators are ready to manoeuvre the giant structures from day one of installation.
“We are continuing to make significant investments in the latest phase of infrastructure during 2015, including the Navis N4 Terminal Operating System (TOS) and 10-lane AutoGates. Our investment in advanced driver simulators will further benefit our customers through improvements to operational efficiency as we reach the next phase of construction for Liverpool2 These investments will make Liverpool2 one of the most operationally efficient and modern terminals in Europe.”
Peel Ports has been working closely with ABB to produce a customised, high-tech training simulator tailored to interactively test the abilities and skills of drivers by presenting them with realistic, operating scenarios. The Company has invested over £500,000 in developing the simulator and the associated software.
The custom-designed software package on the simulator incorporates highly visual, real-life landscape graphics depicting the Liverpool skyline, including the iconic Liver Building and the river Mersey. David Huck, Port Director said: “Peel Ports are committed to providing the best facilities and opportunities available in the
Once completed in late 2015, it will be able to accommodate most of the world’s current fleet of container vessel types and will offer shipping lines a unique opportunity to connect ships of up to 13,500 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) directly to the heart of the UK. The cranes will be capable of handling two 380m vessels simultaneously and ultimately will have a capacity of over one million TEU. With semi-automated remote-controlled operation, the cranes will reduce the time taken to transfer containers from ship to road or rail. They will also have the ability to operate at speeds in excess of 30mph and wind speeds of up to 55mph (88kmph).

RNLI lifeboat centre due to open
Safety
The ALC should save the charity in excess of £3m a year when fully up and running The UK’s RNLI will open its Allweather Lifeboat Centre (ALC) on Friday 21 August to take over production, maintenance and refit of the charity’s allweather lifeboat fleet in-house for the first time in the charity’s 191-year history. Following the official opening, the RNLI will hold an open weekend over the 22 and 23 August so that the general public will have the rare opportunity to tour the new world-class boatbuilding factory.
www.dockyard-mag.com
Angus Watson, head of construction and refit, said: “It is an impressive facility which will allow the charity to build six Shannon-class lifeboats a year and maintain our other all-weather boats. Having a state of the art facility which will see the charity produce, maintain and refit all-weather lifeboats in-house and under one roof is a first for the charity.”
36
The ALC, which was given the green light by RNLI trustees after concerns about future lifeboat building supply chains, is based on-site at the RNLI’s Headquarters in Poole, Dorset and will secure a supply of Shannon all-weather lifeboats for future generations of lifesavers.
out and refit lifeboats and a visitor’s centre.
It will also give the RNLI greater control of costs and quality and has created 90 new employment opportunities in Poole, including apprenticeships in marine engineering and boatbuilding. It is expected that the ALC will save the charity in excess of £3m a year once the facility is fully up and running.
The build project itself was complex. Prior to laying the first brick, the sea wall had to be raised and the ground works completed by Bam Nuttall. The RNLI was able to source a large amount of the fill material needed locally, including 25,000 tonnes of sand dredged by subcontractor Jenkins Marine, from sandbanks in Poole Harbour. This will also save on future dredging costs for the harbour commissioners.
The building itself was designed by Rambol, with architectural design being carried out by Ellis Belk Associates and the main contractor being J.B. Leadbitter & Co Ltd. It includes some impressive features such as three spray booths used to apply primer, coats of paint and antifoul to the lifeboats, moveable platforms which will improve ergonomics and efficiency for accessing fit-
PV panels on the roof of the ALC combined with the PV provision on the rest of the RNLI campus means that up to 8% of the RNLI’s energy requirements can be provided by solar energy.
The material was delivered to the site by barge, which avoided 2,500 truck journeys in and out of Poole. In addition, the RNLI recycled useable material from the demolished buildings for the new foundations saving money and 250 additional truck journeys. It also ensured the material did not end up in landfill.

Lifting boats safely Henriksen Hooks of Norway has introduced two new systems to improve the safety of singlepoint boat launching and recovery. The new LiftView system has been developed so boat crews can know the weight of their boat and ensure that it is within the limits of their lifting system, while the Awarelight provides a simple visual indication of whether the hook is connected or not. LiftView uses a load cell that can be fitted into any of the hooks in the Henriksen range. This is linked to a clear wheelhouse display that graphically shows the boat’s coxswain the exact weight on the hook. This is important as the boat’s weight can increase significantly when cargo and equipment is being delivered, if passengers have joined it or if large voulmes of water have been shipped in rough sea conditions.
VISUAL INDICATOR The Awarelight has also been introduced by Henriksen to provide a visual indicator that improves communications between the boat and the davit operator. These can be difficult if a boat is being launched or recovered from a substantial height, especially in bad weather.
With the entire weight of the boat, its passengers, crew and its cargo being dependent upon a single, relatively small piece of metal, Henriksen engineers believe that the importance of safety data should not be underestimated.
www.dockyard-mag.com
Before the arrival of LiftView a coxswain would need to calculate mathematically the weight of any additional load items taken on board. Because the dynamic motion of the boat in the water also adds to the stresses on the hook and davit, LiftView also measures the additional loading due to pitch and roll. These are difficult calculations for the boat’s crew so the new system can provide reassurance by showing that they will be within the system’s safety limits when they are high above the water.
The Awarelight can be used with or independently of a LiftView installation if desired and uses a bright LED light positioned where it will be clearly visible to the crane operator, even in bright sunlight. When the hook is closed around the lifting ring and the boat is secure, the coxswain will press the indicator button located beside his helm position. The AwareLight will then show a continuous light to indicate that the boat is ready for launching and may be lifted off its cradle. As the boat nears the water and the hook is activated and made ready for its automatic off-load release, the light begins to flash slowly. When the boat is on the water and the hook has been opened the flashing becomes rapid. During boat recovery the sequence is reversed.

Ijmuiden’s new sea lock The harbour at Ijmuiden on the Dutch coast north of Rotterdam is a port in its own right with direct access to the sea but it is also the access point for ships that want to enter the North Sea Canal. Preparations for the construction of a new larger sea lock at the Ijmuiden complex are now well under way. The North Sea Canal canal is a major Dutch waterway which allows ships into the dock complex at Amsterdam. To protect the water levels in the canal and the docks, there is an entrance lock to the canal at Ijmuiden and it is the size of this lock that dictates the size of ships that can enter the waterway. The current lock complex at Ijmuiden comprises four locks with the Northern lock being the largest with a length of 400 metres, a width of 50 metres and a depth of 15 metres. These measurements are the actual size of the lock and obviously the size of ship that can use the lock
will be somewhat smaller with the draft restricted to 13.72 metres. When it was built in 1929 this lock was the largest lock in the World. The other locks in the complex are smaller at 220, and two at 110 metres in length, the latter two being mainly designed for inland waterway craft. Now the port operators at Amsterdam are finding that the size restrictions imposed by these lock dimensions are restricting trade at the port, particularly the size of cruise ships that can reach Amsterdam. Preparations for the construction of a new larger sea lock at the Ijmuiden complex are now well under way. Havenbedrijf Amsterdam NV, the Amsterdam port authority is participating in these preparations jointly with the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment, the Dutch DirectorateGeneral for Mobility and Transport, the Dutch Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management, the City of Amsterdam and the Province of North Holland. The Rijkswaterstaat will oversee the whole project.
The Noordersluis lock, the largest of the group of locks in Ijmuiden will reach the end of its useful technical life in 2029 after 100 years of service and therefore needs to be replaced. This will ensure the safety of the lock as an important water barrier that controls water levels over much of the region and the accessibility of the North Sea Canal Area. The new lock will be located between this Northern lock and the other locks and this location will allow the lock system to remain in operation whilst the construction work is carried out. The size of the new lock which is scheduled to have an overall length of 718 metres will accommodate the trend towards increasing ship dimensions and will ensure that the Amsterdam port area remains accessible for the new generation of larger-sized vessels such as cruise ships, bulk carriers and container ships, all of which currently use the port. A larger, tide-independent lock will also limit waiting times for ships and provide opportunities for capacity expansion of the sea lock.

Wismar expansion starting soon
Marine Civils
Construction work is starting soon on a three year €35.6 million project to expand and modernise the German Baltic seaport of Wismar. The project includes the construction of a new 332m quayside and the creation of 41,500 m2 of additional fill-in port handling areas along with new rail track and access roads. Port chief Michael Kremp said work would be getting underway in October and was expected to be completed by mid 2018. Funding of the project has just been approved by the City of Wismar, which owns 90% of the port, and the German coastal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (MV) which owns the other 10%. The Berlin Government and MV are together putting up €23.5 million of the cost while the port itself is paying the remaining €12.1 million. Reporting “very satisfactory” handling in the first half of this year, Kremp said the latest investment was an important step for the future of the port, which handles some 4 million tons of cargo annually. The second most prominent seaport on the eastern German Baltic coastline after Rostock, Wismar covers 66 hectares and boasts 2,500m of quays, 15 berths and 27 kms of own rail track, Ships of up to 240m length drawing maximum 8.5m can access the port.
www.dockyard-mag.com
Visiting MV First Minister Erwin Sellering said the port was important for the whole state as an industrial location and
40
pointed to new quayside offshore wind farm supply links as well as traditional timber trades. During his visit Sellering also discussed another major marine engineering project for Wismar - the deepening of the port’s approach channel. Plans are to deepen from 9.5m to 11.5m and he said he would push for the realisation of the project. The importance of deepening was pointed up just recently when a 185m long cargo ship loading salt in Wismar for the US could only take on 22,000 tons instead of a possible 35,000 tons because of channel depth. Part of ongoing equipment expansion in the Port of Wismar is the addition in August of four new mobile port cranes from Finland’s Mantsinen. Two are 120R tracked units with an outreach of up to 27m. The others are of 70m and 90m outreach. The port said their introduction meant more flexible and efficient utilisation of existing ship-handling berths and space. The cranes’ modern and efficient diesel engines also reduce fuel consumption and thus emissions. The port of Wismar emerged from relative obscurity after German unification in 1990 and has developed steadily since then. It has seen its handling rise along with its regional economic significance as part of a shipping and transport chain between Scandinavia and the Baltic in the north and Austria, Italy and the Mediterranean in the south.

Mark 2 Tritex Multigauge 3000 uses multiple echo to ignore coatings Tritex produce ultrasonic metal thickness gauges to measure the thickness of metal through coatings, and they have recently developed a product which uses multiple echo to completely ignore coatings up to 20mm thick, only the metal thickness is measured. All measurements are error checked to ensure only accurate readings are displayed, even on uncoated metal. The gauge is simple to use, with little operator input, and has a large bright 10mm display to ensure it can be easily read by the diver, even in poor visibility. The gauge uses multiple echo and single crystal probes in accordance with class society regulations. One probe type can be used for all applications, including extremely corroded metal, with no probe zeroing. It is built to withstand the harsh conditions of the underwater industry and has an integral battery with 55 hours runtime on a single 2 hour fast charge.
New capstan design
In addition, the gauge can be easily upgraded to a topside repeater by simply exchanging the end cap and all probes have protective membranes fitted to prevent damage from rough surfaces.
Seaway Powell Marine has revealed a new design of capstan. These new winches build on the Seaway Powell Marine reputation for quality and robustness, but the real changes are inside with modern bearing technology minimising servicing requirements. All capstans in this range are available in 2000lb, 3000lb and 4000lb configurations and can be supplied with either 12V or 24V motors in vertical or horizontal motor arrangements. The new modular construction simplifies installation and is suitable for any vessel. Winch drums can be supplied in aluminium or bronze, anodised or chromed; bronze drums can be polished.
Linear Jet propulsion system
www.dockyard-mag.com
Details from the latest sea trials of a brand new marine propulsion system that its makers claim can dramatically cut operating costs – while producing more thrust with less noise and vibration was revealed at Seawork International this year.
48
Comparative trials of the Voith Linear Jet, which has taken seven years to develop, are currently taking place with twin boats – one fitted with the Voith Linear Jet and the other using conventional waterjet technology. German propulsion giant Voith hopes that the sea trials will further demonstrate the technology’s outstanding performance as well as cost savings to operators in several marine market segments. The “world-first” propulsion system has been fitted to the new Turbine Transfers’ Trearddur Bay, a 21-metre long, seven-metre beam support catamaran designed by BMT Nigel Gee and built by Aluminium Marine Consultants.
Following trials outside the Isle of Wight at the end of last year the Voith Linear Jet received glowing tributes for its speed, handling, power, and efficiency, as well as reduced noise, vibration and cavitation.
