The Easington terminal, which already handles gas from the Rough gas storage ft³ a day natural gas output from the York field.

With overall North Sea oil and gas production dropping, new reserves are vital to help protect the UK’s energy security.

The approximate £80 million (TIC) on-shore element of the York project involved Costain providing design, procurement, construction management (as Principal

Contractor) and commissioning support services for the new process stream in

and around the existing operational facility – a major challenge as the Easington site is classified as a COMAH Tier 1 facility.

“If you think of the existing facility as a straight line running from left to right,

our new facility zigzagged across it at several points,” said Project Manager, Mark Buckingham, who steered the job through its last six months as its culmination neared.

“We designed and installed a new gas receiving area, the new onshore York

pipeline through the Easington site and a new process island inclusive of a Silica Gel drying operation along with a new emergency vent system for Easington site and York sales gas interface with the National Grid,” he said.

In an example of good housekeeping and sustainability, the project team was able to re-use some redundant process stream equipment from the older Amethyst Field flow, which also previously came ashore at Easington.

The first gas flowed on 26 March, a few days after Costain demobilised from the project after having been on-site since September 2011. Work on final

GUIDANCE ON DP POSITIONED JACK-UPS AND USE OF DUMB BARGES FOR OFFSHORE RENEWABLES SECTOR FROM IMCA An increasing number of members of the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) are involved with the offshore

renewables sector and for this reason the association has published ‘Guidance for the Positioning of Dynamically Positioned (DP)

Jack-up Vessels on and off the Seabed” (IMCA M223) and an updated version of their information note The Inspection and Auditing of Manned and Unmanned Barges’. Both are aimed at ensuring and enhancing offshore safety.

“The aim of IMCA M223 is to provide the owners and operators of dynamically positioned (DP) jack-up vessels with guidance to create procedures for going onto and leaving location,” explains IMCA’s Technical Director, Jane Bugler. “A DP system interfaces with the

vessel’s propulsion systems to hold the vessel in position against external forces (such as wind and waves) that are acting to move the vessel.

“For DP vessels with jack-up capability – when a vessel moves into position on DP but intends to undertake the work on location as a jack-up vessel – there can potentially be excessive stresses induced into the legs during the transitional period from being on DP to ‘leg touchdown’ to soft pinning of the legs. The first leg contact with the seabed will restrict the vessel’s motion which may indicate a position error to the DP system. This could the lead to an increase of thrust of the vessel’s positioning propulsion systems and consequently may impart these excessive stresses on the legs.”

IMCA M223 has sections on Risk Analysis (vessel characteristics; environmental conditions and loading; site specific assessment

integrity; and DP specification and performance); Background Material (that encompasses company procedures; vessel procedures; and information for each location); and covers Procedures for a DP Jack-up Vessel Going on and Leaving Location.

Council welcomes oil and gas industry review An independent review of the offshore oil and gas industry has been welcomed by the leader of Aberdeen City Council.

Retired Aberdeen businessman Sir Ian Wood, founder of the Wood Group, has been appointed by Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change Edward Davey to carry out the review.

Councillor Barney Crockett said: “Aberdeen is a leading world energy city and the oil capital of Europe. As a city, we have a huge

Saudi Aramco Upgrades Gas/Oil Separation Plant with GE’s Advanced Compressor Control Technology GE (NYSE: GE) has replaced an aging compressor control system at Saudi

Aramco’s Haradh gas/oil separation plant in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern

Province with advanced technology that automates the control process for three compressors and will

improve performance and production. The new system was commissioned earlier this year and is operating successfully at the plant. This

marks the first compressor control project with Saudi Aramco for GE’s Measurement & Control business,

building upon GE’s past experience of providing turbine and generator controls for the company.

Haradh GOSP-1 is a critical plant for Saudi Aramco, and its three motor-

driven compressors play a vital role by maintaining the compression of

the gas after it is separated from the oil. The previous compressor control

system used programmable logical controllers, which GE replaced with Mark VIe technology, along with GE’s OptiComp compressor control algorithms and remote control capability from the plant’s existing distributed control system.

“As the world leader in the production of petroleum-based energy, we at Saudi Aramco hold ourselves to the highest standards of excellence and have very specific requirements when it comes to compressor control and protection,” said Ahmad Saleh Haradh,

GOSP-1 Saudi Aramco project engineer. “From the start, GE worked closely with us to understand our unique needs and specifications and remained flexible throughout the entire project. The updated control system is now in full operation and is satisfying all of our performance expectations.”

“Saudi Aramco is a key partner of GE, and we demonstrated to them our ability to meet their specific program requirements through extensive demonstrations and testing of our solution from the very beginning. Robust planning and our close partnership with the

Saudi Aramco team led to the smooth installation of a highly customized control package within a short timeframe. This project adds to our proven experiences and successes in the region where we have

over 80 years of presence and a strong understanding of local industry

needs,” said Rami Qasem, president and CEO, GE Oil & Gas, Middle East, North Africa and Turkey.

The solution features GE’s Mark Vle control platform with OptiComp

control software and provides capabilities such as anti-surge, motor

limit, pressure control, discharge pressure and pressure override control. GE also saved significant plant space by building a single platform to control all three compressors (two high-pressure compressors

running in parallel and one low-pressure compressor running in series). Additionally, GE performed surge tests on all units to help ensure

optimal compressor performance. These tests enabled GE to enhance the performance of the low-pressure compressor and reduce degradation,

www.sosmagazine.biz

ultimately expanded the operating envelope for that compressor.

panel sessions, peer-reviewed technical sessions, topical lunches and breakfast briefings. These sessions will feature a mix of se-

nior representatives from international operating companies and contractors, as well as government regulators and politicians.

Topics cover all areas of interest to anyone directly involved in

the oil and gas industry or, indeed, anyone interested in the future outlook for this business.

Following its successful launch in 2011, the Deep Water Zone will be an important feature of the show. Deep water exploration and

production is playing an ever increasing role in the industry with a growing number of discoveries being made in deep and ultra-

deep waters off the coasts of Brazil, West and East Africa, and in

the Gulf of Mexico. Exhibiting companies from this rapidly evolving sector will display their latest products and services, and a

expertise of the global industry, covering the complete supply

chain of companies including operators, drilling contractors and

oilfield service companies. Over 1500 organisations are expected this year in the largest exhibition of the show’s history. Reflective of the global nature of the industry as a whole there is a large

international exhibitor presence at the event with participating companies from over 40 countries.

With so many industry leaders and influencers under one roof, there are ample opportunities to network and catch up with

colleagues from around the world. Comments Matthias Bichsel, Shell’s Projects and Technology Director: “Offshore Europe is

still one of the world’s premier events for establishing business relationships in the oil & gas industry.”

A new ‘Energy Festival’ is planned for the week of the show,

hosted by Aberdeen City Council. It will include a series of exciting evening events and will allow the show to carry on into the

evening with plenty more opportunities to network, socialise and enjoy Europe’s energy capital, Aberdeen.

Environmental Technologies Ltd CARDEV SUBSEA OIL FILTRATION CARDEV subsea oil filtration has enjoyed a strong following in the ROV industry for over 15 years. Fitting directly to the ROV

itself, the CARDEV SDU-H350-UW-S is a by-pass filter designed to operate continuously whilst the ROV is in operation. Particle

contamination is removed, keeping the hydraulic oil in “cleaner than new” condition, but it’s the ability to remove water that is most valued in the ROV world.

The CARDEV filter removes both free and dissolved water,

including the salt present in sea water that evaporators can leave behind. One of our Norwegian customers described this effect

as “turning milkshake to Cognac”; after a

particularly severe incident they had to put an ROV

back to work with “wet” oil that was creamy in

appearance, only to find

that when they eventually brought the unit back

up the CARDEV filter had removed all traces of

moisture, leaving the oil

looking as clear and bright as a fine brandy!

CARDEV Subsea by-pass filter

The reduced likelihood of breakdown and component failure caused by water ingress during a dive has radically changed

asset reliability levels experienced by ROV operators who choose CARDEV, and this demand has led to many OEMs fitting the filter housings to their ROVs at the factory.

Before and After! CARDEV filtration. From Milkshake to Cognac!

Building on the success of the subsea filter, the CARDEV range has grown to include “Deck Pack” filtration systems for use on

the vessel. These units can be supplied with condition monitoring systems (to measure moisture and particle contamination) and

cleaning tanks, allowing used oil to be drained and the ROV to be refilled with clean and dry oil quickly and efficiently. The used oil can then be filtered until the condition is suitable for re-use.

Continuing investment programme keeps Hone-All Precision ahead of the game Hone-All Precision Ltd is already reaping the benefits of the recent decision to extend its machining capability with the

installation of two Sunnen horizontal tube honing machines. According to Colin Rodney, Managing Director, this latest

instalment in an ongoing investment programme has contributed

significantly to the subcontract machining company’s competitive edge, especially in tube honing applications requiring high stock removal rates on larger diameter components.

For its part Sunnen claims its honing machines deliver twice the metal removal rate of other competing machines. And it

highlights features such as the new ‘tight bore’ torque sensing

feature, while auto stroke adjust also helps prevent tool breakage and bent drive shafts – even during unattended operation in

‘tight bore’ conditions. The end result says Colin Rodney, is that the two new honing machines “are most definitely meeting and

exceeding our expectations and for the first time in a long while, we have honing capacity available and we can be exceedingly

competitive due to the stock removal rates achieved on the new Hone-All is also celebrating a successful outcome to the annual re-assessment of its aerospace supply chain SC21 Bronze

status. This, together with steady progress towards the 99.5-

99.9 per cent quality performance criteria of the Silver level of the ‘Supply Chain for the 21st Century’ initiative, confirms the

Leighton Buzzard-based company’s role as a leading supplier of

years and we remain committed to delivering the best possible service to our customers. They will continue to benefit from

the improvements we are making in our drive for world-class performance.”

A vital part of this drive is the provision of a complete machining service at Hone-All’s fully refurbished 20,000 sq. ft. factory.

This includes material procurement, deep hole boring, deep hole drilling, gundrilling, CNC honing, CNC turning and CNC milling.

All these activities are carried out in-house, enabling Hone-All to continuously improve control over cost, quality and lead times. This, says Andrea Rodney, guarantees competitive rates and a faster, more efficient service.

The emphasis on continuous improvement has produced an ideal environment for the entire production process, from delivery

of raw materials to shipment of finish machined components. Stringent quality management procedures have also proved

their worth in terms of the pistons, valves and sleeves typically

machined by Hone-All for aerospace customers. Multiple staged bores and close dimensional and geometrical tolerances are a

frequent requirement of this type of work, a challenge that Colin Rodney says Hone-All is more than capable of meeting.

Paradigm STATIS software hones pressure pulse pipeline unblocking Paradigm Flow Services has developed software to effectively model pipelines for operation of its Pipe-Pulse system, which remediates pipeline blockages using pressure pulses.

STATIS can build detailed models of pipelines or umbilicals, including components

such as flexible risers, or down to the flowpath through an umbilical diver mateable connection. It allows Paradigm to determine the optimum amplitude pulse to be used, and calculate the generated stress within the pipeline walls.

Simulating client systems, STATIS is used for optimizing setup, tracking

effectiveness of operations and generating reports. Comparisons can be made

between the expected (modelled) response and received response in real time. STATIS can build in a variation table to examine variations in pipe and fluid

parameters. When cases are run in STATIS to animate the Pipe-Pulse effect, it can

measure the pulse wave against time and also take a snapshot of the amplitude plot

and pressure wave bouncing back.

Ultimately, the client’s pipeline can be animated with the predicted pressure wave

passing through it in slow motion or in real time, assisting in optimization and client understanding of the Pipe-Pulse system.

STATIS has been verified in trials and is now being used in live projects at Paradigm. For more information visit: www.paradigmflow.com

Nautilus Rigging (UK) Ltd

New Nautilus Subsea Hooks Solutions to old ROV problems

Model: NH-ROV22E Length: 682mm Width: 264mm Thickness: 62mm

NAUTILUS Rigging (UK) Ltd have launched a new, unique, range

of ROV operated lifting hooks for subsea operations. The hooks utilize patented Nautilus “positive locking” technology, an

innovation that significantly enhances the operational and safety aspects of subsea/ROV lifting operations.

The company, which won the Woefel, Best Mechanical Engineering

Bespoke 316 SS Stud and wire assembly rated to 1200kg

Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and

the Innovation of the year award at the Offshore Support Vessel conference has invested over £150,000 in developing this new

type of subsea hook which complements their existing range of topside hooks.

The new hooks feature Nautilus’s patented “positive locking” system which ensures each load is operationally secure until released by the ROV.

It is the first, and only, range of subsea hooks to include such

innovations which address the long standing concerns held by

industry over the operational safety and suitability of traditional internal spring latch ROV hooks.

Bill Toon, Managing Director, said “The Nautilus ROV hook is specifically designed to prevent unintentional self release of

the load which is a known, inherent, design hazard associated

The new Nautilus ROV hooks incorporate all the innovative safety

especially when loads pass through the “transition zone” (from

safety handle and dual sided sliding lock mechanism which

with the standard spring latch “snap on” design of ROV hooks,

air to water) which, under the varying hydrodynamic forces, can

produce “slack” in the lifting train and allow the slings to flip up

over the latch and then pull back down through the hook and self release the load which often results in costly equipment damage

and recovery operations.

“Following 18 months of development, testing and field trials

where the positive locking function maintains load integrity until

Subsea 2013 event in Aberdeen back in February, The Industry

The risk of self release is eliminated with the Nautilus ROV hook released by the ROV, in addition the positive locking arm also

prevents the hooks from unintentional hooking on to umbilical cables and subsea equipment”

we were very excited to launch this new product at the premier has responded very positively to this new development and our

initial batch of sample production hooks sold out within weeks of the launch event.

The first full production run of the NH-ROV22E (Long shank) and the NH-SS22E (eye top) subsea hooks has completed and stock will be available for supply from end of June” Mr Toon advised “Nautilus ROV hooks are the cost efficient solution to ensuring load integrity, safety, and security for all subsea and ROV assisted lifting and installation operations”

Nautilus Subsea Hooks have a WLL of 22 tonnes, the hooks are supplied with a bespoke 316 stainless steel activation
