things to do & see Visit and Discover National Parks and Recreation Areas I GUNNISON NATIONAL FOREST

The “Land of Many Uses” graces us with scenic beauty and diverse recreational activities for everyone. Fish in crystal clear rivers and lakes, hike Wilderness Areas in fields of wildflowers, mountain bike and go by horseback through thick aspen forests and enjoy winter sports on thousands of acres of pristine lands. At night, enjoy our clear, dark skies and see nature in an environment that rivals any man-made planetarium. Surround yourself with the best Colorado has to offer in one great location.

I BLACK CANYON OF THE

GUNNISON NATIONAL PARK Experience one of our country's newest national parks less than one hour from downtown Gunnison. The Black Canyon of the Gunnison's unique and spectacular landscape was formed slowly by the action of water and rock scouring down through hard Proterozoic crystalline rock. No other canyon in North America combines the narrow opening, sheer walls, and startling depths offered by the Black Canyon of the Gunnison.

I CURECANTI NATIONAL RECREATION

AREA Three reservoirs, named for corresponding dams on the Gunnison River, form the heart of Curecanti National Recreation Area. Panoramic mesas, fjord-like reservoirs, and narrow canyons abound. Curecanti is just minutes west of the town of Gunnison. I BLUE MESA RESERVOIR is Colorado's

largest body of water and the largest kokanee salmon fishery in the United States. Morrow Point Reservoir is the beginning of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, and below Crystal Reservoir is the site of the Gunnison Diversion Tunnel, a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. Recently discovered dinosaur fossils, a 5,000-acre archeological district, a narrow gauge train, and traces of 6,000-year-old dwellings further enhance the offerings of Curecanti. Other seasonal activities include wildlife viewing, whitewater rafting, wind surfing, swimming, star gazing (one of few places in Colorado where it’s easy to see the Milky Way with the naked eye), kayaking, nature walks, horseback riding, hiking, fishing (and ice fishing), climbing, mountaineering, camping/RV sites, boating, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, cross country skiing and bird watching. I MORROW POINT BOAT TOURS

The Morrow Point Boat Tour is a 1 1/2-hour trip through the upper Black Canyon within Curecanti. Passengers ride through the canyon on a 42-passenger pontoon boat, accompanied by a National Park ranger to tell the story behind the scenery. WHEN ARE THE TOURS? Tours run twice a day at 10:00 am and 12:30 pm, Wednesday through Monday, from Memorial Day though Labor Day. HOW DO I MAKE RESERVATIONS? Please call (970) 641-2337, ext. 205 or stop by the Elk Creek Visitor Center (15 miles west of Gunnison off Highway 50). Reservations are required.

I U.S. HIGHWAY 50 Traveling west from

Gunnison, U.S. Highway 50 brings you into Curecanti National Recreation Area. The highway follows the path of the Gunnison River. Stop and have a picnic, fish, or walk by the river at Cooper Ranch or one of several other accesses along the way. After passing through the Gunnison River Canyon, you come upon Lake City Bridge and the Iola Basin of Blue Mesa Reservoir. The landscape opens up into high altitude (7,500 feet) sagebrush steppe. Reminders of a volcanic past are evident in the mesas and breccias surrounding you. Beyond Iola, stop at the Elk Creek Visitor Center (15 miles west of Gunnison). Stop at the old Highway 50 beach, .25 miles west of the Elk Creek entrance, and take a swim or enjoy the view. I COLORADO HIGHWAY 149 This high-

way winds along the south side of Iola Basin to a popular boat access. Continue heading south, away from the reservoir to the Gateview Campground, about 20 miles from Highway 50. The

turnoff for the campground is a narrow, dirt road that winds along the Lake Fork arm of the Gunnison River. The scenery is beautiful and more isolated than other campgrounds around Blue Mesa Reservoir. Because of the unimproved road and narrow canyon, trailers or vehicles above 22 feet are not recommended. Both are dirt roads suitable for cars in good weather. Continuing on highway 149, you will come to picturesque Lake City, gateway to Lake San Cristobal, one of Colorado's largest natural alpine lakes. I COLORADO HIGHWAY 92 One of the

most breathtaking drives, Colorado Highway 92 crosses over Blue Mesa Dam and winds along the north rim of the Black Canyon, providing gorgeous views at every turn. Pioneer Point offers great views of the Curecanti Needle and Curecanti Creek. Golden eagles, turkey vultures, and other birds and wildlife are common sights. Get a great view of the canyon at Hermit's Rest Overlook or take a hike to an overlook that begins on Highway 92 at Crystal Creek. Continue west to the north rim of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. I WEST ELK LOOP SCENIC &

HISTORIC BYWAY The West Elk Loop has been described by a forest ranger as "the closest you can come to a wilderness experience in a passenger car." Even through the windshield, one is likely to see bears, elk, deer, bighorn sheep,

coyotes, eagles and many varieties of wildlife. The 204 miles of two-lane roads through rural western Colorado touches three designated Wilderness Areas and passes through thousands of acres of National Forest. The road skirts canyon rims, follows whitewater rivers, plunges into deep forests and traverses desert and sagebrush plains. The West Elk Loop provides immersion in the scenery, history and culture of western Colorado. A popular route is to start in Gunnison and head north on Colorado Highway 135 to Crested Butte, then west over Kebler Pass (a dirt road usually open Memorial Day through early November, depending on snowfall), to 133 south through Paonia, and in Hotchkiss take 92 east toward Crawford. Colorado Highway 92 ends on US Highway 50 at the Blue Mesa Dam, where you will head east back to Gunnison. Any of our “quiet” highways make for great road biking during the summer and fall months. These roadways might not be as wide as you are used to, but are favorites of locals and Colorado bicycle tours.

TUBING Crested Butte Mountain Resort boasts "Colorado's Best Corduroy" and over 1,000 acres of well-balanced terrain. Superpipes, terrain parks and a tubing hill make winter exciting for those who need more adventure. The resort offers a full range of services including ski, snowboard and tube rentals; children's programs, private and group lessons; on-mountain restaurants; and at the base area, a variety of sports shops and eateries. I BOATING, CANOEING, & RAFTING

Blue Mesa Reservoir is the place for power boating and waterskiing, with a full-service marina and visitor center on the lake. There’s even a beach set aside for windsurfing. Lake Irwin is an incredibly picturesque lake for canoeing, and Taylor Reservoir is a hidden gem for boating and fishing ... just to name a few. I WHITEWATER RAFTING has two great lo-

cations. In Almont, ride the upper and lower Taylor River, which offers ratings of 1 to 4 class waters. For 1 to 3 class water, take a ride on the Gunnison River. For more excitement, put in at the Gunnison Whitewater Park, located just west of town. Local outfitters have everything you will need for a great day of rafting! I CAMPING/RV SITES With nearly 2 million

acres of National Forest, camping opportunities abound. From primitive camping to complete convenience facilities, you can enjoy the great outdoors to your satisfaction. One of the larger and more popular places for enjoying the Curecanti National Recreation Area with your RV is the West Elk Marina located just off Highway

50, west of Gunnison. We also have many locally owned and operated resorts that cater to our RV guests. Check with the BLM and Forest Service local offices to reserve camping and RV sites ahead of time. I DOG SLEDDING If you never have experi-

enced the great outdoors behind an ambitious team of sled dogs, then you haven't done it all! Mushing is becoming an activity that our visitors do to add that "something different" to their winter vacation experience. There are two-and fourman sleds pulled by some of the friendliest canines you'll ever encounter just waiting to take you into some of the most beautiful country you've ever seen! I FISHING For novice and skilled enthusiasts,

enjoy over 3,900 miles of trout streams and lake fishing. Gunnison County is known for its Gold Medal trophy trout waters. Options vary and include walk, wade and float trips on the East, Taylor and Gunnison Rivers. Some of the local favorites for lake fishing are Blue Mesa, Morrow Point, Crystal Reservoir, Taylor Reservoir and the high mountain lakes of Irwin, Spring Creek, Mirror Lake, Emerald and Lost Lake. Ice fishing in the winter is also a popular activity. I GOLF The Gunnison Valley is graced with two

scenic courses. The Dos Rios Club is located in Gunnison at 501 Camino del Rio just west of town, where Alfonso Hartman use to ranch. The Club at Crested Butte, a Robert Trent Jones II designed course is located just south of Crested Butte on Country Club Drive.

things to do & see Activities for Everyone — Just a Few Suggestions… I GUNNISON WHITEWATER PARK One of

Gunnison's newest recreational attractions is Gunnison Whitewater Park on the Gunnison River, built for recreational canoeing, kayaking and rafting. The community park associated with the water park includes a walking path and picnic area with grills. The trail runs the whole length of the park, making fishing the river easy. The park is a series of rock structures along a several hundred-foot section of the Gunnison River, just west of town. These formations create various water dynamics that make rafting more exciting and turn the area into a paddle playground for kayakers, enabling them to perform all types of tricks while staying within the same stretch of the river. I HARTMAN ROCKS MULTI-USE

RECREATION AREA Hartman Rocks is a rugged ridge speckled with granite pinnacles. The backside of the ridge is on BLM property and has over 50 miles of tremendous single track. Locals are drawn to the area for its rolling sage brush terrain that makes for fun trail running, mountain biking and riding the range whether you're on your quarter horse or dirt bike. The front side is on city and county property offering a spectacular skyline. The Hartman Rocks User Group Committee, guardians of this unique location, have already changed the face of Hartman Rocks by adding a new parking lot, trailhead kiosk, picnic area and restrooms. This base area is the staging center for much of the recreation that ignites in the rocks just south of Gunnison.

cess without having to leave the pavement, head for the Fossil Ridge Wilderness and the Summerville Trail just off Taylor Canyon Road. The Gothic corridor also brings you to the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness. You can access this from a number of trailheads, including those at Judd Falls, Schofield Pass, and Schofield Park. What a great way to hike to Aspen! If you're still needing more wilderness options in the Gunnison Valley, head for the north end of Taylor Park and into the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness area. Also, many of the trails with forest destination offer day hike loops to 9-day backpacking vacations. Stop by our visitor centers for a map of the endless hiking options in the Gunnison National Forest. I HORSEBACK RIDING The expansive Gunni-

son National Forest makes horseback riding a pure pleasure. No matter where in the Gunnison Valley you choose to ride, our local outfitters can take you into our spectacular backcountry that is perfect for wildlife watching, a picnic lunch or just breathing in clean mountain air. Or if you're not an equestrian but just like to watch horses in action, check with the county's fairgrounds for barrel racing, roping, and other Gymkhana events going on during the summer. I HOT AIR BALLOONS RIDES Nothing is

Gunnison Valley at dawn. Regardless of the time of year, breathtaking scenery is guaranteed. From high-country alpine lakes and wildflower-carpeted fields to snow-covered peaks and wildlife on the move, your eyes will feast on the natural beauty of this valley. I HUNTING Gunnison County is known for its

big game adventures. For more information on hunting areas, seasons, rules and regulations, and license applications, please visit www.wildlife.co.state.us. I ICE HOCKEY The locals in Gunnison-Crested

Butte take their hockey very seriously but never turn away an interested visitor who wants to jump in on a game. Ice arenas are located in Crested Butte, Crested Butte South and in Gunnison. Let our visitor centers help direct you to the best-suited facilities. I JEEP TOURING Another way to explore

some of our grand landscape and forest is by 4wheel vehicle. There are specific places to enjoy alpine meadows, wildflower fields, gentle waterfalls, wildlife viewing, adventurous 4-wheeling and the scenic beauty that is Gunnison County. Our visitor centers can help you find just the right spot.

I MOUNTAIN BIKING A mountain biker has

a plethora of choices, whether it be a gentle rolling singletrack along the Lower Loop in Crested Butte or an extreme technical descent at Hartman Rocks in Gunnison. At the north end of the East River Valley, #403, #401, Deer Creek and Dyke Trail are epic routes (we don't use "epic" loosely–it's truly amazing stuff) that will provide a couple days of riding for all but the marathon bike riders. Add to those the wellmaintained single track at the ski area and Snodgrass trail systems, and you'll have enjoyed quality trails with only other mountain bikers, runners and hikers. A Colorado Trail Spur adjacent to Western State College and Hartman Rocks Recreation Area just south of Gunnison are the "spinning" off points for singletrack in the Tomichi Creek Valley. Hartman Rocks is home to the 24 Hours in the Sage Mountain Bike race, where slickrock and rolling technical trails wrap around unusual geological formations. One can ride from town to the Continental Divide or Lake City virtually on single track, if you have a day or two. The riding is unlimited, and you'll enjoy 360 degree views and share your experience with a few multiple-users, if you see anyone at all. Our visitor centers will get you headed in the right direction. I NORDIC SKIING, SNOWSHOEING,

SKATING & SLEDDING A visit to the Crested Butte Nordic Center offers enthusiasts approximately 45 kilometers of beautifully groomed trails and a spectacular backcountry experience. The ice rink and sledding hill add

I SNOWMOBILING Snowmobiling has be-

come an increasingly popular winter activity in Gunnison and Crested Butte. Numerous trailheads provide miles and miles of prime territory. Guided trips, private rentals and great motor sport shops can accommodate anyone who is willing to roost on the Gunnison National Forest. I SUMMER CHAIRLIFT RIDES At Crested

fun winter opportunities for all! Ski, skate and sled rentals are available at the Center. Throughout the county a skier can tour or snowshoe from designated winter trailheads. Nordic tracks are set in the Gunnison Valley through desert-like settings, up meandering drainages, and through glistening forests. I ROCK CLIMBING While our great Rocky

Mountains have plenty of places to "go climb a rock," there are some favorite spots like up Taylor Canyon Road where sheer and challenging rock faces right off the road seem to lure in the climbers. Our local outfitters can point you in the right direction to some other favorite climbing spots. I SHOPPING & DINING Too many options to

list here!

Butte Mountain Resort, the non-winter activities gear up in early summer and make enjoying this spectacular "Butte" easier than ever! Give yourself and your bike a lift to begin a nature experience soon not to be forgotten. Once at the top, hike up to the peak of the Butte and take in the breathtaking scenery of the West Elks Mountains and other ranges too numerous to list. If "down" is the direction you'd rather go, start your hike or biking experience down the many fire trails through aspen groves and abundant wildflowers. I WILDLIFE VIEWING The Gunnison Valley

has an abundance of wildlife and areas easily accessible for viewing. The state of Colorado has designated State Wildlife Areas and we have seven of them: Almont Triangle, Gunnison River, Gunnison, Lake Irwin, Roaring Judy, Spring Creek Reservoir zx Taylor Reservoir. Come and see our wildlife in their native habitat. The brown-capped rosey finch and Gunnison sage grouse are elusive, but often seen! Street in Pitkin, the museum brings the history of this old mining town to life in the "Red School House." Drive through Pitkin slowly and enjoy all the other old buildings. I GOTHIC GENERAL STORE Recently ren-

ovated but retaining its 1800s charm, the General Store serves visitors with information, ice cream and cold refreshing drinks. The upstairs museum features artifacts and information about this historic and colorful mining town. Gothic is a seasonal destination.

I ROARING JUDY FISH HATCHERY The

hatchery was built over several years in the late 1960s and includes 783 acres along the East River south of Crested Butte. The hatchery and raceways utilize about 200 acres of the total. Kokanee salmon are spawned in the hatchery from late October to early November, and visitors can view the milling and fertilization of eggs. Young salmon and trout can be viewed in ponds. A lot of shorebirds and songbirds can be seen in the marshy willow bottoms during spring and summer. I WORKSHOPS This is a place to learn new

things and to improve your ability with activities you enjoy. We have workshops available throughout the year. A sampling includes photography, writing, yoga and the many healing arts, botany, birding, & fishing. Visit GunnisonCrestedButte.com for details.

1 HISTORY OF THE CITY OF GUNNI-

SON It is believed the Ute Indians summered in the Gunnison area in the 1500s. The first few non-Native American individuals arrived in the early 1840s in search of good trapping and mining, though none set up permanent settlements. In 1853, the U.S. Army Topographical Engineers led by Captain John Gunnison arrived looking for a suitable path for the transcontinental railroad route. While the ore deposits for precious metals did not pan out, the nearby land proved good for ranching and on May 22, 1877, the city of Gunnison became the official seat of the county and the center for local commerce. The railroad arrived

3 TOWN OF PARLIN Parlin is named for John

T. Parlin who started a dairy farm and stage stop there in 1877, becoming a busy spot as prospectors and settlers streamed into the area.

By 1910, many of the mines closed and production had completely ended by the early 1940s. Today the school house, jail, town hall, general store, and a few cabins still stand.

In 1881, the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad (D&RG) arrived at the town. There was a fiveminute stop each time the train came through. In 1882, the Denver South Park and Pacific Railroad also reached Parlin from the Quartz Creek Valley. With the D&RG pulling the station in 1891 and the Silver Crash of 1893, most of the business in town dried up. The general store and post office remained in business for the local ranchers. When visiting Parlin, be sure to make a stop at the Parlin QT General Store, which opened in 1904 selling gas, oil, general merchandise, hay, grain, feed and miners supplies. Tourist cabins were added later and the store and post office remain a social gathering point for families on the Quartz Creek and travelers.

4 TOWN OF OHIO CITY The area surround-

ing Ohio City had been explored by prospectors as early as the 1850s. In 1880 miners set up the town of Eagle City; however, they soon changed the name to Ohio City, after Ohio Creek, which was soon changed to Gold Creek. The town grew quickly to boast a population of 300 people. Numerous gold and silver mines and four mills up the Gold Creek Valley kept the town in business for many years. Many of their remnants still stand. After the Silver Panic of 1893, production switched to primarily gold.

an existing online auto tour for this area at www.GunnisonCrestedButte.com/alpinetunnel. For more detail, the Gunnison Country Chamber of Commerce located at 500 E. Tomichi Avenue in Gunnison has brochures about the district. Generally, the Alpine Tunnel Historical District is open from July to September. The auto tour begins northeast of Pitkin at the junction of the Cumberland Pass Road (Forest Service Road 765) and the Alpine Tunnel Road (Forest Service Road 839). Visitors should use caution as they drive on this narrow dirt road. The Alpine Tunnel Historic District includes close to 13 miles of the former Denver South Park and Pacific Railroad rail bed across the Continental Divide from Hancock to Quartz. It also includes the Alpine Tunnel itself, which is now sealed closed. The railroad constructed the tunnel in 1880-1881 in a race with the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad to cross the Continental Divide and reach Gunnison. The Denver & Rio Grande won the race; however, the Alpine Tunnel district illustrates the engineering and operational challenges faced by Colorado mountain railroads in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

5 TOWN OF PITKIN Pitkin is the oldest in-

corporated city on the Western Slope of Colorado. Prospectors first came to the area in 1878 and named their camp Quartzville. The town incorporated on August 11, 1879, and changed its name to Pitkin to honor Colorado Governor Fredrick Pitkin. Settlers chose the area for its mineral deposits of gold, silver, copper, lead and iron, and numerous mines boosted the economy. In 1882, over 300 houses stood in the town and 60 businesses were open with more than 1,000 people living in the hills surrounding town. However by 1883, the promise of the mines had already played out and the population dwindled to half that of 1882. Silver mining brought spikes to the population in the early 1890s and again in the early 1900s. The fish hatchery and the timber industry helped keep Pitkin populated in the 1920s and 30s. Today the town has around 80 full-time residents, and the population swells to 300 in the summer months. Still standing are the old Bonton Hotel, now called the Pitkin Hotel located at 329 Main Street, City Hall located at 400 4th Street and the Pitkin School located at 800 Main Street. All are listed on the Colorado Register of Historic Places. The Victorian-Gothic style church, built in 1901 is located at 521 Main Street nearby the corner of Sixth and State Street where the depot stands, built in 1881 by the Denver South Park and Pacific Railroad. 6 ALPINE TUNNEL NATIONAL

SITES (recommended summer travel only) There are numerous mining sites along Cumberland Pass. The Bon Ton Mine sits on the south side of the pass. The Blistered Horn and Jimmie Mack Mines sit on the north side of the pass. The pass itself was constructed in 1882 to connect Tincup to Pitkin and the Denver South Park and Pacific Railroad. The Civilian Conservation Corps stationed in Pitkin built the Cumberland Pass road used today. 8

TIN CUP CEMETERY There are approximately 95 graves in the Tin Cup Cemetery. The first burial was T. L. Stormes on April 30, 1879. The individuals interned there were segregated by religion, with Catholics buried on one knob and Jews and Protestants on another. Individuals who were killed as the result of violent crimes were buried on Boot Hill. member of his party dipped his tin drinking cup into a stream and found gold in 1860. The party named the area Tincup, and the river and the park were given Taylor’s name. The lack of huge promise for gold and the Civil War kept many early prospectors at bay. The first great strike in the area was made at the Gold Cup Mine in 1878, and the area became flooded with prospectors in 1879. The people who came renamed the Tincup Camp, Virginia City. For the first few years, this renaming led to a great deal of confusion until in 1882, when the local citizens voted to keep the name Tincup. Tincup once had a bustling downtown, about a block-and-a-half long, with storefronts, hotels and restaurants on either side of Washington Avenue. However a fire in 1906 destroyed the south side of the street, and a fire in 1913 flattened the north side. Many mining towns suffered from devastating fires, which often burned large sections of towns to the ground. Tincup was no exception. In 1891, the town installed fire hydrants. The hydrants drew water from a small reservoir above town, however the extremely cold mountain temperatures soon proved that the gravity system could not work properly. The fire hydrants, though not functioning, still stand today and can be seen along the streets. While many of the original businesses are no longer standing, Frenchy’s Restaurant is named after the saloon that operated in Tincup from 1879 to 1913 by A.N. “Frenchy” Perrault. The General Store building was probably moved to its current site from Hillerton in 1904, where it served as a land office, and the current business as a general store began in 1976. TIN CUP TOWN HALL & CHURCH The town hall survived the fires of 1906 and 1913. The wood-frame building is distinguishable with its two-story belfry tower and entryway, which has a hipped lower awning and a peaked roof topped by a flagpole. Town hall was constructed in 1903.

10 TAYLOR TRADING POST Adam Murdie

originally homesteaded this land in the 1880s. Bill and Leona Murdie sold the land to Sherman and Edna Cranor of Gunnison in 1940. The Cranors planned on building tourist cabins on the spot; they figured if tourism didn’t work out there, the land could be used for ranching. The Cranors began building their first cabins in 1942; however, Mr. Cranor was called to military duty for World War II. Having a new cabin mostly built, he asked the Army for a few more days to complete his project. Permission was granted and Mr. Cranor built his roof before heading overseas for the next three-and-a-half years. The Taylor Trading Post is still owned by the Cranor family today.

11 TAYLOR DAM In 1933, the Bureau of

Reclamation approved the plan presented by Western Slope Congressman Ed Taylor to install a dam at the site. Between 1935 and 1937, more than 300 men worked to construct the dam, which has a structural height of 206 feet. The dam is part of the Uncompahgre Project and keeps the water on the Western Slope for irrigation. Taylor Reservoir covers 2,030 acres of land.

12 .HARMEL’S RANCH RESORT Home-

steaded in the mid 1880s by the Elmer family, the ranch served as a stage stop for miners traveling to Gunnison and those traveling up and over Jack’s Cabin Road. The Harmel family purchased the ranch in 1958 and the business was taken over by Jody Harmel Roberts; her sons Brad and Steve run the business today. A few of the buildings built by the Elmer family are still in use today including Cabin Number 2 and the Bunk House, which originally served as a tack building.

13 ALMONT STORE (at Three Rivers Resort)

Since being built between 1924 and 1925, this wood-framed, false-fronted building has remained open as a store serving the needs of Almont and its visitors. At times, it has been the home for the U.S. Post Office. The building is constructed of logs milled at the lumberyard, which once sat above town. Built in 1921, the Dance Hall, still there today, served as a popular meeting spot from the time it was constructed through the 1950s, hosting regular dances. There is an annual Fourth of July polka dance still held there today. The building is constructed of log and is an octagonal shape, which provided the optimal space for dancing. Cabins number 3 and 4 were built in 1915 and the building sitting between current cabins 4 and 5 once served as a weigh station for ore from Doctor Park Silver Mine. The ore was weighed here before being put on the train. 14 HISTORY OF THE TOWN OF ALMONT

Almont sits at the junction where the Taylor River and the East River meet, forming the Gunnison River. Originally the settlement was known as Fishers after Sam Fisher who began operating

The Denver & Rio Grande Railroad arrived in 1881, putting an end to the toll road. In 1881 the town was renamed Almont after a famous horse known as the leading Hambletonian stallion of the time. The main log building currently occupied by a restaurant and fly-fishing store at the Almont Resort is the remains of the Marston Hotel built in 1893 by Vernon Davis. It caught fire in 1948 on New Year's Eve, was rebuilt and has been added onto over the years. In the early 1890s, simply built vernacular log cabins were built along the river. The resort advertised they had restorative drinking water that would help bladder and kidney troubles.

Located at 21293 Highway 135, Glacier began in the early 1880s as a stage stop for the mines up Cement Creek and soon became a stop for the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad. Local ranching families built the school house that is still standing in the early 1920s to replace an earlier log structure closer to the river. The school house is currently a showroom for a local log furniture craftsman.

15 JACK’S CABIN An interpretive sign placed

by the Gunnison County Historic Preservation Commission is located .4 miles from the Jack’s Cabin turn off on County Road 813 on the left hand side of the road. The settlement of Jack’s Cabin, originally named Howesville after Jack Howe who settled there in 1875, served as a stage stop for travelers between the Crested Butte area and Gunnison. Jack’s Cabin had a hotel, guest cabins, corrals, a post office established in 1879, a school, a dairy that opened in 1905 and a cemetery. The Denver and Rio Grande Railroad stopped nearby to pick up cattle and hay.

settlers and miners arrived first followed by the Croatians, Italians and Slavs in the early 1900s. The CF&I operated its mine until 1952. Many buildings from the late 1800s and early 1900s still stand. Crested Butte was designated a Registered National Historic District in 1972.

THE CRESTED BUTTE MOUNTAIN HERITAGE MUSEUM (The Hardware Store & Tony’s Conoco Station) This building began operating as a hardware store in 1883. It then was the town’s first gas station. Inside is a potbelly stove that warmed the store from its beginnings. A.J. “Tony” Mihelich operated the store from 1939 until his death in 1996. It is now home to Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum and the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame. Visit the Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum to obtain a free copy of a historic walking tour of town. Staff offers a free guided walking tour weekly. The Museum is open from mid-November through mid-April from noon to 6 p.m. and from Memorial Day weekend through the end of September from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. There is an admission to visit the museum’s exhibits.

16 PIONEER SKI AREA & GUEST CABINS

In the mid 1930s, students from Western State College, using abandoned cable and machinery from the Blistered Horn Mine on Cumberland Pass, fashioned Colorado’s first chairlift at the Pioneer Ski Area, which remained in operation from 1939 until 1951 when the Forest Service condemned the area for being unsafe. Five original buildings still stand. Constructed in 1931, eight years prior to the ski area’s opening in 1939, there are

18 HISTORY OF THE TOWN OF

CRESTED BUTTE The Ute Indians summered in the Crested Butte area for hundreds of years before the first settlers of European descent arrived looking for precious metals as early as 1874. The town incorporated in 1880 and quickly grew as a supply center for the mining camps. The town survived due to the large concentration of high quality bituminous coal in the area. The Colorado Fuel and Iron Company (CF&I) and a few smaller companies developed coal mines and coke ovens. By 1882, Crested Butte produced much of the state’s coal supply. The English, American and northern European

CRESTED BUTTE CEMETERY At the cemetery, there is a memorial to the 59 miners killed in the Jokerville Mine explosion of 1884. The chapel, erected in the 1960s, is only open in the summer and includes interior architectural elements from St. Patrick’s Church, built around 1890. The Catholic congregation relocated from St. Patrick’s to the newly built Queen of All Saints Church in 1961. St. Patrick’s, located on Maroon Avenue, is now a residence.

first interment in 1879, the same year silver was discovered in the area. Most of the major causes of deaths included diseases such as pneumonia as well as snow slides and mining accidents. No murderers were buried at the cemetery. There are more than 50 graves, many unmarked today. One of the few stonemarked graves is that of Mary Bambraugh. She died of mountain fever in 1881 at the age of 17.

placed by the Gunnison County Historic Preservation Commission is located just beyond the Beaver Ponds trailhead on the south side of Ohio Pass, County Road 730. As you are heading up the pass (from Gunnison), drive 1.4 miles past the trailhead. You will see a small road exiting to the right; park your car and walk along this road for about 90 yards and you will see the sign just below the wall. The Denver South Park and Pacific Railroad (DSP&P) built this structure in 1882. A short, one-mile walk past the sign, along the railroad grade, will bring you to the “Big Balloon Loop” that enabled the railroad to turn and gain the elevation necessary to reach the rock wall. There you can see interesting rock culverts constructed to allow water to flow under the never-completed railway bed.

20 KEBLER PASS In July 1904, the state of

Colorado took over the maintenance of Kebler Pass road; previously, it was private road. The road would be boon for local commerce, providing a good connection to the coal mining community of Somerset. Somerset had become the largest coal producer in the state by 1903 when the Denver Rio Grande Railroad reached it. Remains of the original wagon road can still be seen today on the east side of Kebler Pass. This bed is now used as a bike trail.

built in 1881, the families of Ohio Creek banded together to build a sturdy log school house. The new school had a stoop on the front, an upstairs, a stage and a cloak room. It also had a magnificent view of the Anthracite Mountain range and Mt. Carbon, hence the name, Fairview School. The old log Fairview School was eventually moved to the Easterly homestead and replaced by the current frame structure in 1906. Fairview school was closed in 1948 and the students bussed to Gunnison. Boots to Bridles 4-H Club meetings were held at the schoolhouse as well as community meetings. The school house is on private property. Please view it from the road. 23 TWIN BRIDGES OVER THE GUNNISON

The Blue Mesa Reservoir is the largest body of water in the state of Colorado at more than 20 miles long and with approximately 92 miles of shoreline. The reservoir formed when the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation finished the Blue Mesa Dam in 1965. The reservoir provides water for irrigation, municipal and industrial uses. The water from the project feeds into the Gunnison Tunnel completed in 1909; today it is recognized as a National Civil Engineering Landmark. Prior to the construction of the dams, the land under the reservoir was used first by Native Americans as far back as 10,000 years ago. In the 1880s, new settlers used the land for agricultural purposes. The reservoir covered the area where the towns of Iola and Sapinero once stood and where the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad operated its trains regularly through the area from 1882 until 1949, with the last train coming through in 1954. When the water in the reservoir is very low, a few of the foundations from Iola can still be seen; the water covers over 79 manmade structures. The National Park Service offers tours by boat through Morrow Point, the eastern end of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. The visitor center is open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., its winter hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Gunnison County’s Wine Country Delta County Few people think of western Colorado when considering wines, but lately this emerging agricultural trend cannot be ignored. Our neighbors to the west in Delta County have been receiving attention as a very fine alternative to other wine regions in Colorado. Some of the winemakers have been corking for about 15 years, and more winemakers are discovering the benefits of the grapes in Delta County. Many of them have already been recognized and awarded for their excellence. From Pinot Noir to Riesling, Cabernet Franc to Merlot, these winemakers are diverse and creative in their winemaking skills, offering a broad variety to choose from. Hot summer days and cool mountain breezes during the summer evenings create excellent sugar content and flavorful juice in the fruit raised in Delta County. The vineyards and wineries here have discovered that the dry climate mixed with a good water flow make this an ideal area for growing grapes. Cooler soils help keep a perfect acid balance providing fruity and intense grapes, leading to delightful wines. Awarded for excellence since 1996, the winemakers in Delta County are proud to pour their wines for you. Newly organized self-guided wine tours will point you in the right direction for tasting wines and selecting fresh fruits and vegetables in Delta County. A pastoral mountain setting brimming with bountiful orchards and vineyards, the North Fork is a great place to hit the road on your bike and take in this rural feast for the eyes. Most of the winemakers offer regular hours and a few are by appointment. There are also many other reasons to stop in for a sip. Wineries fashioned from local field stone or housed in historic structures are a delight to visit as they draw to mind the traditional old estates of Europe. While enjoying the beautiful sights and sounds of Gunnison County consider a drive over Kebler Pass, home to the largest aspen tree grove in Colorado. The pass is generally open from Memorial Day through the beginning of November, or until the first big snowfall! Head up Whiterock Avenue out of Crested Butte to reach Kebler Pass and make a left heading west when you reach Highway 133 towards Paonia. You will be traveling along the West Elk Loop Scenic and Historic Byway. From Gunnison, you also can travel the West Elk Loop. Head west on Highway 50 out of Gunnison and at the Blue Mesa Dam, turn right onto Highway 92 and travel along the north rim of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park where you’ll be treated to deep canyons, the grand Gunnison River, interesting rock formations and many scenic overlooks to take it all in. Be sure to pack a picnic lunch! Look for wineries in Paonia, Eckert and Cedaredge. As you come to the intersection of Highways 92 and 133, head east on 92 and use the map on this page as your guide. In Delta County the orchards, vineyards, farms and ranches dot the landscape like a country quilt. The scenery is breathtaking and the bounty of fresh, locally grown produce will provide a mouthwatering treat once you arrive. Select fresh-picked eats and pair them with a Delta County wine for a culinary experience for your taste buds!

TIPS FOR Gunnison Valley VISITORS The Gunnison Valley draws many visitors each year because of its diverse natural environments, scenic beauty, and outstanding recreation opportunities. Because it attracts so many people, there is always a risk that careless visitors will damage or destroy the very resources they are coming to enjoy. All visitors to public lands in this valley have the potential to cause impacts both on resources and other visitors. It must be the goal of everyone to understand and minimize the impacts of their visit. We invite you to work with us to help ensure that the Gunnison Valley continues to be a special place.

Here Are a Few Things Visitors Should Keep in Mind 1. USE VEHICLES RESPONSIBLY. Each area has rules that govern vehicle use. Learn and follow these rules for each area you visit. Stay on designated or existing routes and out of closed areas. Limit your driving in wet conditions to avoid road damage.

3. RESPECT OTHER VISITORS. You share these lands with many people; make sure your fun is not ruining the experience for others around you. Minimize noise, keep pets under control, and drive safely on narrow roads and trails.

2. LEAVE NO TRACE. Remove all evidence of your visit so others will find these areas as beautiful as you do. Take care of public facilities. Leave wildflowers and natural objects for others to enjoy. Do not deface or dismantle historical or archaeological sites.

4. KEEP WILDLIFE WILD.Visitors can unknowingly disturb the many species of wildlife present on public lands. Do not feed the animals. Enjoy them from a distance. Move quietly through the woods, especially in streamside areas.

5. RESPECT PRIVATE PROPERTY. It is your responsibility to know where you are. Be sure you have legal access to the places you want to enjoy. 6. HAVE A SAFE TRIP. Changing weather and difficult terrain can pose hazards to the unprepared visitor. Be sure someone knows where you are going and when you plan to return. Be ready for changing conditions and stay within your capabilities.

Tom Stillo

Check with the land managing agencies in the areas you visit such as the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), U.S. Forest Service and National Park Service. They can offer information to help you get the most out of your trip and advice on other specific considerations about the area such as legal access, safety, road conditions and much more.

These are your public lands — protect them like the treasure they are. GunnisonCrestedButte.com 15

CRESTED BUTTE The town of Crested Butte is 128 years old and shows its age (in a good way). As Colorado’s eighth largest National Historic District, the evidence of its roots are inescapable. Visit the Mountain Heritage Museum (and Mountain Bike Hall of Fame) to get the details. The dining options are incredible for a town of this size, with great choices from casual to gourmet. Shopping is a unique experience, with something to please every taste. Crested Butte, the Wildflower Capital of Colorado, has a vibrant charm and energy that comes from the people who live here (and those who visit, too). Check out the happening music and nightlife scene while you’re in town. In 2008, the National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP) named Crested Butte one of its “Dozen Distinctive Destinations.” “Crested Butte is a delightful hidden gem that offers a rare mix of beauty, history and adventure.” says Richard Moe, President of the NTHP. “Filled with endless recreational opportunities no matter the time of year, this authentic mountain town is arguably one of the most charming vacation destinations in the Rockies.”

MT. CRESTED BUTTE There is an incredible amount of excitement in Mt. Crested Butte these days! The ski area is now owned by a family with a tremendous reputation in the ski industry, and Crested Butte Mountain Resort has just completed work on a new base village called Mountaineer Square. It includes premier lodging, shops, nightlife, and a convention center designed to accommodate groups from 20 to 350, and extensive onmountain improvements also continue. The only thing that rivals the winter’s skiing and snowboarding is the summer’s hiking and mountain biking. Summer chairlift service is available mid-June through Labor Day.
