In my native country, the Netherlands, they have a saying, ‘Zeg het met bloemen’, which translates into ‘Say it with flowers’. Flowers are my roots. From the Dutch bulb culture to working my own gardens through the years in various locations, I have found a sense of wholeness and being part of the ever turning cycle of life… Flowers have always informed the imagery in my art work not as mere botanical illustrations but figurative symbols exploring the transformative cycles of our own lives. Now living in the tropical paradise of Kauai, I have orchids blooming by my back door. Like humans, fierce and fragile, full of life and abundance, shining and standing in the world, doing the one thing they can do before they recycle through darkness into new life…

I love the immediacy of drawing. In the past few years I have started using bistre, a pigment made from soot. Since this material was

also used as a painting and drawing medium by the European Old Masters of the 15th - 18th centuries and still is in some of the art academies in Europe today, I feel connected to my past in a special way. The memento mori symbolism of soot, it’s color of earth and dirt fit the present intention in my work.

My process is very tactile and transient: Laying down bistre washes, drawing, taking away, lifting out, layering again, I become one with the piece, grounded in earth, searching for higher meaning and manifestation.
