pproximately 30 years ago a family from the Philadelphia area, Ed & Diana Piechocki planned to build a home in the quiet Bucks County countryside. They settled upon 10 bucolic acres in Upper Black Eddy, PA. where the school systems are exceptional, crime rate almost non-existent and easy access to Phila & NY. With oil prices through the roof at the time, they did extensive research on a new design concept of Passive Solar Envelopes. Ed a talented designer and Diana took their ideas to an architect and construction began on their passive solar building design where windows and walls are made to collect, store, and distribute solar energy in the form of heat in the winter and with the higher summer sun, deflect solar heat in the summer.

A truss system was used to reinforce the outer roof. The 10”concrete block cellar walls were filled with concrete and reinforced with steel rebar and further insulated on the outside underground with 3” thick by 4’ x 8’ expanded styrene sheets. Common in all Passive Solar homes is the south facing greenhouse where the sun’s rays are collected and distributed throughout the envelope designed home. In the winter heat circulates in a clockwise direction. The inner house only loses heat to the outer living air space, not to the outside air temperature. The overall goal was to double insulate and optimize the sun’s rays to heat the house. A highly efficient fireplace was installed in the living room to heat the house when the weather was overcast, and at night in the winter when the sun was not contributing to the warmth of the house. To back-up the solar heating, a self-feeding wood pellet burning stove is located in the cellar. And as additional heat assurance, there is a small built-in electric heater in each room. There is even a double entry door airlock located on the side entrance to the house to minimize heat or cool lose.

The overall upper living square footage space of the house is approximately 4,300 square feet, with an additional 2,000 square feet in the basement. There is an 860 square foot two-car garage with storage over top. Also there is a heated and air conditioned twostory 1,900 square foot shop.

Master Bathroom The house is also Ed’s office, and to ensure he is able to work year round, even in the worst of weather conditions that might cut off his grid power, a backup generator was installed to take over all essentials at the house and shop. To further ensure the highest level of comfort, a heat pump and central air condition unit supplies hot and cold air both to the inner and outer house airspace.
