Adaptive reuse for a new academy-museum Milano, Italy Pinacoteca, Brera Accademy and Palazzo Citterio 2019 Thematic Studio S. G. Malvezzi

The need that distinguished the project from the beginning was the desire to connect the Pinacoteca and the Accademia di Brera with Palazzo Citterio and, at the same time, to think of a connecting intervention that included new innovative spaces designed to create a new academy-museum. Specifically, light and contamination were the two keywords that accompanied the entire design phase. Light intended as the missing element. A reference to the need for bright spaces in contrast to the current small and under-lit laboratories. Contamination, intended as foundation for a future perspective. A provocation towards tradition, aimed specifically at the Academy and the Pinacoteca which operate as two separate elements. The final solution led to the creation of a series of "greenhouse buildings" capable of giving visual as well as physical permeability thanks to an analysis of paths. A series of works of art were also analyzed and selected, hypothesizing an exhibition within these new spaces, the founding theme was "balance" as a link between innovation and tradition.

INTRODUCTION

PRI VIA

Firstly, the hybridization of some spatial typologies (hall, pavilion, palace etc) has been studied. This has led, specifically, to a system that looks like a "box in the box", a hybrid between hall and pavilion which, thanks to a series of paths, becomes a single multifunctional space. This typological hybrid was inserted in front of Palazzo Citterio and is made of a glass skin and a heart in concrete. The intent is to work on lightness with new buffer spaces, able to intrigue by showcasing activities and works. They are flanked by spaces, more traditionally intended as "heavy", opaque, where some other activities can be seen through defined paths. In the same way as this volume, others have been designed to expand the current spaces by creating connections between new and existing. This is the case of a volume, which acts as a backdrop for the Botanical Garden: a new multifunctional space for Pinacoteca and the Academy. In dialogue with it, there is a glazed volume-connection (an exhibition staircase) which has the dual function of creating a second wall to frame the Botanical Garden and to connect the expansion volumes to the existing one. Regarding the green space, the intervention wanted to be in contrast to the organized and geometric greenery of the Botanical Garden, in fact, for the extension of Palazzo Citterio, a freer form was conceived while preserving, at the same time, the oldest trees. As for the expansion volumes in direct dialogue with the pre-existing ones, the project has great heights that connect the deconsecrated church of Santa Maria di Brera on the ground floor to new atelier-exhibition spaces. On the first floor there is a new large space used for performances and exhibitions that connects and integrates itself with the current path of the Pinacoteca. Finally, we find the last volume of the project, which recreates the rear facade of Palazzo Citterio. Like the previous ones, it aims to implement the halls of the Palace with new spaces at great heights, also maintaining, in this case, the mantra used in the other extensions: lightness and light. Always in Palazzo Citterio, there is an underground room, the Stirling room. The project approach provided for its maintenance and, at the same time, expansion by connecting it to a volume from scratch for the exhibitions and the new appendix of the Academy and Pinacoteca.

TYPE OF PROJECT: LOCATION: BUILDING: YEAR: STUDIO: PROFF.:

Conversion of an old factory into a residence Milano, Italy Residence 2019 Architecture of Interiors Design Studio G. Muzio, S. Rugginenti

The objective of this project is the re-functionalization of a small building where the interior space is the ideal engine of design research. Through a series of limits and demands, a “game of connections and building rules has developed, so that the useful space can be exploited to the maximum. The first input of the project was given by the solar study and the paths, these were useful for the layout and the formality of the spaces. This same analysis, together with the data related to the project city, were essential in the technical and plant design. With the development of design, the idea was born to want to characterize the building in its transparent elements and the choice of facade materials. An addition logic has been developed for entrances and windows that have been able to characterize the entire project.

DETAILS

FOCUS ON INTERIOR DESIGN

For the final phase, the design of a piece of furniture was studied in-depth, specifically a storage unit. This serves both as a library, in the first front half, and as a container for the second rear half. Its second characteristic is to be the actual structural part of the staircase. It acts as a "landing" connecting to the second ramp. For this reason, flush-handles have been designed in detail to make the surface homogeneous and safe. It is also possible to change the arrangement of the furniture according to different needs thanks to the first mobile ramp. It rests on a sliding panel able to position itself in any of the six parts that make up the furniture.

Reuse of an old parking lot as a meeting place with public activities Milan, Italy Community Hub 2018 Architectural Design Studio F. Orsini, G. Fini, D. Ferrari

The project aims to create a new public space capable of defining the life of the community qualitatively, both at a real and symbolic level. The project area is an underutilized parking lot whose position makes it a strategic place of great importance, in fact, it is an element of interchange of the underground. In the project intervention, the focus has been moved on this connection’s characteristic: unifying the Crescenzago district to the subway in a more secure and served way and, subsequently, connecting two districts separated by a large road that one of the main accesses to the city of Milan (via Palmanova) A new public space has been designed where the puzzle of open and covered spaces gives birth to new support for collective living. A new identity.

NEW (HUB) OPPORTUNITIES revitalizing the suburbs

TYPE OF PROJECT: LOCATION: BUILDING: YEAR: STUDIO: PROFF.:

Social housing project in a rapidly changing neighbourhood Milan, Italy Residence 2019 Design and Construction Studio F. Schiaffonati, F. Mola

The theme concerns the design of a residential building, specifically a social housing solution, located around the Rogoredo railway station. The goal is also to deepen the relationship between new intervention and the urban context, defining synergistic actions capable of producing an architectural and environmental enhancement process. The first starting point was, therefore, the urban analysis in which the identity characteristics of the neighbourhood and its actual lacks were identified. Then the design action took shape along the axis of via Toffetti by demolishing a series of dilapidated and abandoned buildings while maintaining a tertiary building of the rationalist period having a well-marked identity, which is meant to become the regulatory presence. Several different functions that could cover residential and tertiary needs have been included in the project. Commercial activities in dialogue with the neighbourhood, such as open public spaces and a leisure centre with a museum and an auditorium have been added.

URBAN TRANSFORMATIONS the importance of small spaces in a big project

TYPE OF PROJECT: LOCATION: BUILDING: YEAR: STUDIO: PROFF.:

Enhancement and urban redesign: the reopening of the Milanese canals Milano, Italy Pavillon and Linear Park 2018 Final Design Workshop L. M. Dondi, I. Mariotti, V. M. DessĂŹ

Starting from the great urban transformation that concerns the reopening of the Martesana canal on the stretch of Via Melchiorre Gioia, a further urban analysis was carried out to seize the opportunity of a redevelopment of small urban spaces in the direct surroundings. From the beginning, no specific directive was given regarding the area to be analyzed nor the theme to be applied to the project but the need to design to improve the quality of life of the area. Starting from the aim of improving the liveability of the neighbourhood, both on a functional and a social level, the project involves a series of multidisciplinary interventions through different project scales, from the urbanistic point of view to the material details.

PROTTI-MENDEL LINEAR PARK The regeneration of the Protti-Mendel Park has seen the redesign of the existing paths so as to more directly connect both the "Biblioteca degli Alberi" (Garibaldi) and Via Gioia. The internal paths wind through the greenery, creating spaces in which the pre-existing trees are maintained and enhanced by the addition of new plants and shrubs, the latter were inserted thinking also of their type of flowering. In this way the park transforms itself cyclically, changing its colours during the seasons. In these areas, we also find punctual resting elements: long benches at the edges, play areas for children and picnic tables. These insist throughout the park, becoming its leitmotiv. Moving on to the connection between the Protti and Mendel gardens we find the barrier of Viale Sondrio. To overcome this limit, an elevated 4.5m pedestrian crossing was designed above street level, to respect the underlying public roads. The overpass has a non-uniform section along the route and has parapets that rise differently (from 1,20 m to 1,50 m). Internally it is covered in wood, while externally it is in concrete and wood and, the opposite side is covered with wooden panels from which green creepers come out. Thanks to this solution, users' security levels are increased and visibility is always guaranteed from the height of the road. The extremes of the overpass face towards the park with two wider terraces from which the foliage of the trees come out. On the right side, under the terrace, there is a bar.

COMMUNITY HUB an open building in dialogue with the city

TYPE OF PROJECT: LOCATION: BUILDING: YEAR: STUDIO: PROFF.:

Demolition of an old building and construction of a new public space Bergamo, Italy Community Hub 2017 Architectural Design Studio 2 A. Scaccabarozzi, A. Ubertazzi, T. D’Antino

The project involves the dialogue between the city of Bergamo and one of its historical area in disuse: the Montelungo barracks. Based on the urban analysis, the building was designed in the way it could meet both the needs of the neighbourhood users and a wider context given by the capillary urban connections. Thus, services and activities previously lacking were proposed in the context of the new Community Centre. With the design of this Centre, different themes have been touched, from structural and figurative to distributive and relational. The latter was the most significant concerning the function of aggregation of the building as, together with the project site and its context, it shaped the forms and activities included in the new project plot.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT STEP The urban research was of primary importance. It was divided into an analysis of activities, mobility and traffic areas. This has brought not only to the knowledge of what could have been the main activities with which they could interface and strengthen the project but also to understand which users could benefit the structure in terms of nearness. This highlighted the presence of activities related to education, the Mascheroni High School and a seat of the University of Bergamo, a little further north, but also of cultural activities such as museums and art galleries. As far as mobility is concerned, an attempt was made to understand how much the area was accessible both by private means (analysis linked to traffic and intensity of journeys) and by public and/or sustainable means of transport (cycle paths) The analysis showed that this is a busy location but, at the same time, well served by public transports. About sustainable mobility instead, there were broken off sections of cycle paths which, with due additions within the project, has been extended and completed.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROPOSED ACTIVITIES On the basis of the urban analysis linked to the neighbouring activities, were designed a series of spaces and activities that could meet both the Community Centre's multi-functionality and the needs and possible users of the neighbourood. In the Community Centre we can find a lot of different spaces. There are spaces dedicated to sports and expressive activities designed for both private and secondary schools in the neighbourhood, cultural activities such as cineforum and exhibition gallery, but also purely work-related activities such as equipped coworking spaces and meeting areas for freelance and start up. In the centre, there is also a refreshment point open to everyone and, specifically, there is also a "training kitchen" for some cooking courses that are hypothesized also in evening time slots. As for the outdoor area of the Centre, there are some free green areas with the purpose to became one of the meeting point for the neighbourood. There is also a small sports field with a basketball court and a five-a-side football pitch. We can also find a corner dedicated to leasure time with a small stage for musical or theatrical events placed in a niche among the artificial green hills that shelter the block from the street.
