Landmark Theaters process book
by Roberta Forman for Design Media I
THE BEGINNING
My beginning process started with trying to identity the problem with this website. I started with some user testing and the results confirmed what I thought was wrong with the website.
Results from user testing The user testing revealed that the website was not layed out in the best fashion and was definitely very hard to navigate. It took one user 50 some seconds to even get the point of buying tickets; it took another around 45. A common thing heard while taking these videos was, “Wait...where do I buy tickets?” I even had one user literally say, “I think I need help.” From these videos, it was clear there were a few things that needed to be worked on: 1. the overall look of the website was outdated and dingy 2. the path to finding tickets was very muddled 3. there was too much on the screen and it was distracting 4. the whole process needed to be simplified
The next step... After that, the next move was to figure out how I could achieve the end goal: a cleaner website that was easier to use. This process lead to paper prototypes and storyboards.
After the storyboard... The storyboards lead to some paper prototypes. My first prototypes were very reminiscent of the original website, just trying to get function to the level of ease that I thought it should have.
After a couple prototypes... I realized the original setup was a huge part of the problem. So I decided to go a different route, making a larger header and a more open look to the page.
A new idea... After a break and some thinking, I decided that there were too many pages and too many elements on each page. I thought a modal window would be the perfect way to simplify it.
GIFT GIVING ACTIVITY The gift-giving activity was interesting to say the least. At first, I was very confused about how it pertained to the project. Even after the project I was confused about how it pertained to it, but after a little thought I found what I was looking for. The whole point of the project was to dig a little into your partner’s stories and find out what they would want to give someone. After that, you were supposed to dig a little further to find out how you could make what they want to give. The activity relates back to the project in that this project wasn’t just about creating something that looked nice. It was also about creating something that the user can use, something that pretty, but functional. The interactive sequence needed to be something that the user enjoys doing or at the very least doesn’t dread - like giving a gift!
The final prototype... With the final protoype and modal windows in place, I made a final PDF mockup and started building.

THE END
REFLECTION When the project began, I was in a boat without a paddle. The words interactive sequence didn’t mean much to me. I think this project was a great leap into interactive sequences, though. It taught me a lot about web design. I learned that web design is more than just creating something that looks nice and then throwing it onto the internet. There’s a process - a long one at that! You have to take into account not only what is going to look nice, but also what is going to function properly. There’s so much testing and using and redesigning that has to be done in order to create something that’s really great. As far as my own project, I think it’s a great start (and light years ahead of what I started with). I learned so much, not only about the process, but about the program too. I learned a lot about catching little mistakes, how one wrong letter can ruin your whole life for hours and hours and hours, and that you can never trust copy and paste.
