POLA, short for poetic landscapes, is an international operating and recognized landscape architecture design studio located in Berlin and Hamburg, Germany. Our approach is based on a design driven practice that creates, restores and enhances the urban and natural environments. Ms. Roberta Serra has worked for POLA as junior landscape designer with an highly professional attitude from March/2015 to April/2017. She is an extremely committed, bright and talented individual, who deeply cares about social and sustainable landscape design issues. She stands out among others for her dedication to her job. I can highly recommend Roberta to potential future employers on the bases of her contribution to POLA. During her time Roberta was responsible for various projects as well as competitions and dealt with tasks related to: • • • •

Taking part and leading competitions in collaboration with recognized international architecture offices. Team leading for POLA in award-winning landscape architecture competitions. The project’s aim is the realization of the connecting spaces between the historical park “Planten un Blomen”, the botanical garden and the train station of Hamburg. The design of the new limits and the adjustment of the accesses allows to create a new urban front for the train station improving the quality of pedestrian areas and defining the parking lots. 02. ALTE BIBEL Urban park, Bernburg, Germany International competition | 1° prize with POLA Landschaftsarchitekten

“Alte BIbel” is the most important historical park of the city of Bernburg, it is located in the upper part of the center and over the years it’s still frequented by citizens and tourists. The goal of the project is to propose new paths in addition to the existings and to create a new information’s system to improve and to guide people through the park. In order to preserve the historical and romantic character of the place, are proposed bright benches repeatable and combinable, inspired by the traditional salt’s production of the city, the “crystal benches”. www.competitionline.com/de/personen/129806

The competition area is located at the foot of the walls of the historic city of Erfurt and close to the cathedral square, a meeting place for tourists and citizens. The project proposes the creation of a link between the two parts of the city and a new design for the green hill. Through a new topography, an accessible ramp and a green stairs make possible to arrive to the panoramic terrace and to reach the the top of the city. The forest and existing vineyards are integrated in the design and the path ,going trough them, turns a simple connection into a unique experience giving at the “Petersberg” a new image and identity.

04. ROCK THE BLOCK! Public spaces in a productive city, Linz, Austria Europan 14 | 2° prize with Lorenzo Ciccu, Simone Langiu, Carlo Pisano

The area of investigation is located in a strategic position just behind the main train station. The whole territory is differentiated in: the northern part which provides technical infrastructures; and the southern part currently used by ÖBB’s Technical Service. The aim of the proposal is to connect the inner city of Linz with the southern districts with a new vibrant neighborhood which will introduce productive, commercial, residential, cultural and social services. The project proposes a series of strategies: adaptive reuse of industrial heritages, interpretation of the borders not as lines but as spaces and areas of interactions, enhancement the urban connections, declination of the grid as a “tartan”, a pattern consisting of criss-crossing horizontal and vertical bands, each one representing a different type of space. Together with the buildings, the public spaces are designed with a flexible but very clear structure, able to host different programs and adaptable through time. With a series of small squares and pocket areas, the square along Wienerstrasse, the linear park along the railway and the park along Unionstrasse are the three large public spaces, relevant at the city scale that will foster the creation of a vibrant open neighbourhood seen as the inception of the new urban development .

05. CRAFTS PAVILION Public space, Monastir, Italy International competition with Simone Langiu and Solinas Serra Architects

The project realize a multifunctional structure for the development and promotion of the craft and agro-food industry of Sardinia. The configuration of the building guarantees a free use of the spaces and a high degree of permeability between the interior and the exterior. The green spaces and the paved platforms are therefore in close relation with the interior space which represent its natural extension. The project preserves some of the existing trees and integrates them into a new topography.

06. DIONYSIUSPLATZ Square, Krefeld, Germany International competition | 3° prize with POLA Landschaftsarchitekten

Dionysiusplatz is the main square of the city of Krefeld, and it’s dominated by the presence of the cathedral. This area is also the starting point of the main shopping streets and an important place for public activities. The proposal wants to create a “free” square, in which the only decorative element is a pavement made of stone tiles that makes strong the idea of urban centrality through a gradient of different colors. 07. “BUTTERMARKT” Market square, Elmshorn, Germany International competition with POLA Landschaftsarchitekten

The goal of the competition is the design of the market square and the spaces along the river in the center of Elmshorn. The project proposes a central space that links all the different elements especially two buildings: the historical market and the new public pavilion. This configuration defines additional spaces : parking lots and sidewalks. The project also aims to improve the relationship between the city and the river through the construction of new borders, parks, promenades and platform along the water able to host different activities.

08. AMERIGO VESPUCCI PLATZ Waterfront, Hamburg, Germany International competition | 3° prize with POLA Landschaftsarchitekten

The project for the square and promenade of the Hamburg’s expansion zone proposes the disegn of a new pole for the city’s collective activities. Finding a strong height’s difference between the east and west side, the square is realized as a big ramp (5% of slope) divided by wide green islands. This system allows you to bridge the slopes and defines spaces for different activities. The proposal for the new waterfront of Vilanova wants to create a connection between the harbor and the city center by building new spaces for the citizens and giving formal unity and continuity to the coastal system. The design, reshaping the road section, allows to extend the pedestrian and cycling space in the sea side, and creates rest areas along the sea. The big square hosts a multi-functional building with a transparent portico, extending the structure of the roof. This constrution wants to preserve the visibility and permeability of the coastline system and define spaces for collective events.

10. HOUSING “ANDREAS GÄRTEN” Courtyards and gardens, Erfurt, Germany International competition | 4° prize with POLA Landschaftsarchitekten and Winking Froh Architekten

“Andreas Gärten” is a new residential district at the foot of the historic city walls of Erfurt. The project, considering the particular location of the area, proposes the construction of a single element conceived as a “pedestrian basement” where are standing small buildings and gardens connected to them. The shape and the relation between the volumes and the green creates a dynamic succession of different spaces: private gardens and public areas. The “pedestrian basement” is surrounded by public parks and paths connecting the new district with the city.

The landscape project of the new residential area in Berlin is based on the realization of different spaces with different grade of privacy that will satisfy the needs of future users. The design proposes the construction of private terraces along the west side of the building, hidden by high vegetation and plants to protect the houses. A new public park develops along the river together with various courtyards with facilities, playgrounds and flexible space on the east side. This strategy allows to obtain a perfect sinergy between architectural volumes and landscape.

12. SUITEHOTEL Courtyards and gardens, Baltic Sea, Germany Preliminary and Detailed Project 2016/2017 with POLA Landschaftsarchitekten and Pott Architects

The design of the gardens, terraces and outdoor areas of the hotel in Usedom is inspired by the dunal landscape of the Baltic Sea coast where the project is directly located. In the internal cortyard is realized a garden with a main path which connects the entrances with the promenade along the sea. Through a series of small hills and changes of plants and vegetation, the project wants to create an atmosphere referring to a marine landscape. The visual connection with the sea is always guaranteed thanks to the use of pine and small trees.

The goal of the project “Luiquid Field” is the creation of a new landscape mosaic in the Camp of Tarragona. Through the identification of the actual values are identified 4 “Shorelines” parallel to the line of the sea. In all of them are found some features and new opportunities for intervention that can amplify and meet a new tourist demand. In a landscape dominated by the cultivation of irrigated, the project proposes a return to the cultivation of dryland crops, tradition lost in the years. A new water infrastructure in addition to the existing one generates a change in the landscape and increase biodiversity, offering new opportunities for land management. The proposal of a system of water retention and phytodepuration helps to improve the water system, avoiding contamination of the water table and supporting existing agriculture. The recovery of dryland crops offers a substantial variety of local production and the creation of a new mosaic of agriculture. Natural pools, salt-water pools and the recovery of the marsh in the first coast line, contribute to the richness of the landscape creating at the same time a new tourist demand. In the new mosaic the relocation of tourist facilities and the use of existing rural houses offers the possibility to generate cultural and gastronomic tours, giving an added value to the territory of the Camp of Tarragona.

Reading a territory through the eyes of a landscape architect involves trying to understand the dynamics of its development, and image it as a place in continuous evolution and change, considering all the factors that make it perceptible as landscape. This reading of space as a dynamic landscape, has led me to reflect on the changes and natural processes and investigate the possibilities of intervention in these contexts. My attention was especially focused towards disturbances and those that are considered natural disasters. But what is our capacity to manage these shocks? How much does landscape architecture contribute in the spread of the disturbances? Through some of the concepts of landscape ecology and recognizing disturbances as both natural and human intrinsic dynamics of the landscape, I try to understand the influence of these in the structure and composition of the territory. This reflection has led me to not consider disturbances as a negative factors but often involved in building the wealth of ecosystems and their variety, ensuring a large profit. My research focuses, then, not so much in the evaluation of the negative impacts of disturbances, but in the possibilities that they offer in the transformation of the territory, in order to identify a methodology of intervention in disturbed landscapes. Through some strategies and the concept of ecological and social resilience, the intention of this thesis is to understand the various possibilities of landscape architecture in dynamic and disturbed contexts, learn to manage disturbances as an opportunities, to obtain the maximum benefits and to “build for the future change.”
