Over the past few years, Robert Gordon University has been rated in the top 5 for Graduate recruitment in the whole of the UK. at Aberdeen Business School, MOST of our full-time courses INCLUDE a work placement lasting from FOUR weeks to 48 weeks.
Show the world what you can do It’s the age old problem for graduates everywhere. You need experience to get a job – but you can’t get experience unless you have a job! Which is why a work placement is such a vital part of your studies here at Aberdeen Business School (ABS). Getting real experience in a workplace brings your studies to life. Not only do you get to put what you have learned into practice, but you get a real feel for your specialism and a taste of what your career might be like. It’s not a case of “we’ll try and find you something suitable”. You will gain relevant work experience through a placement during your time at ABS. As you can see from what our students have to say about their placements, it’s an invaluable way to get the experience you need.
“My placement year has been fantastic. It has allowed me to develop and gain skills both within the workplace and within myself. It gave me the opportunity to be involved with numerous campaigns and marketing activities and also lead on a few projects myself. Undertaking my placement at NHS has given me a superb experience within the field of marketing.” Sarah Munro BA (Hons) Management with Marketing Marketing Assistant, NHS Grampian
Get ready to go further At Aberdeen Business School we can help you gain the practical skills and knowledge you need for your chosen career – but we also acknowledge that it’s in the workplace that you realise your potential.
• Boost your CV Real workplace experience in a relevant business puts you ahead of the competition. Placement supervisors can give you references which can be hugely important in the job market. • A valuable networking opportunity Companies often use placements as a selection process for graduates, so your placement employer may even offer you a job. • Increase your employability Placements help you learn new skills such as team working and leadership. They also help you become more independent, responsible, proactive and confident. • Increase your earnings potential Students who have completed a placement often earn more after graduating than students who have not done a placement. • Improve your qualifications Placements enable you to put the theory you will learn throughout your studies into practice. • Focus your career plans You can decide whether or not a certain job or industry is right for you.
“My one year industrial placement with Wood Group has proved vital in terms of both personal development and the development of workplace transferable skills. Prior to placement, I had had limited experience within a business environment and although I had learnt about different HR concepts/theories through university, being submerged in an organisational context has been an eye opening experience and I would definitely recommend it. Lauren Kay BA (Hons) Management with HRM HR Assistant, Wood Group
We work closely with employers to offer courses that make our graduates particularly desirable to local, national and international companies and organisations.
Preparing for placement Suddenly finding yourself in the real world, with all the pressures and stresses of a busy workplace, might seem a little daunting at first. Don’t worry. It’s actually a fantastically rewarding and exciting time. And you can always rely on the friendly support of our dedicated Placement team. The Placement Office at ABS can help you to choose the right placement, in line with your course and career aspirations. Whatever you wish to do and wherever you’d like to do it, we can help you get the experience you need to set you apart from the competition and embark upon your career.
“Placement has been a very worthwhile experience and I would recommend it to all students at this stage.” Caitlin Bissett BA (Hons) Management SAP Support Administrator, KCA Deutag Drilling Ltd “I feel that placement has developed many of my skills and really prepared me to take on other roles in the future.” Alice Bidaine BA (Hons) Management with Marketing Commercial Coordinator, Aberdeen Football Club
“A degree from Robert Gordon is as near to a guarantee of a job as you can get. Few graduates were unemployed six months after leaving last year – just 3.8% – the lowest rate of any statefunded university in the country. It’s the same every year at Robert Gordon, which has the best graduate jobs record of any university.” The Sunday Times University Guide 2012
