ABOUT ABERDEEN BUSINESS SCHOOL Aberdeen Business School, the largest of three faculties at Robert Gordon University (RGU), is one of the leading providers of business education in Scotland. The achievements and continuing success of our graduates in their careers is a mark of the high quality and recognition given to our postgraduate and undergraduate programmes. Our strong links with industry, commerce and the public sector enables us to develop practical, innovative courses designed to prepare you for today’s business needs. The Business School has held AMBA (Association of MBAs) accreditation for the MBA programme for more than a decade and many of our individual courses hold accreditation or are recognised by professional bodies. The School is currently working towards AACSB International (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) accreditation – a U.S.-based accrediting organisation. Our state-of-the-art building is located on the RGU Garthdee campus in a beautiful woodland environment on the southern edge of Aberdeen.

ABOUT ROBERT GORDON UNIVERSITY RGU is considered one of Scotland’s most modern ‘New Universities’ but its history actually dates back to the 1600s. Today the University is a leading provider of higher education with an outstanding international reputation, producing confident, highly employable graduates, undertaking ground-breaking research and developing strong links with industry, both in the local area and around the world. A study experience here can provide you with a real advantage in today’s competitive workplace.

HOW TO APPLY TO ABERDEEN BUSINESS SCHOOL Unlike most North American Universities, you do not apply direct to Robert Gordon University. In the UK, we have a central admissions service called UCAS – Universities and Colleges Admissions Service. Applications are made completely online (there is a small fee) at www.ucas.com/apply

You do not have to wait until you have results from your home institution before applying; in fact you should apply as early as possible. Applications open in mid-September for entry the following September (we don’t have January entries) and based on the course you are studying, we will make a CONDITIONAL offer. Usually the conditions are that you pass the named course with a GPA of 3.00 or above, that you have a letter of recommendation from your home Community College and that you have the required English language qualification if English is not your native language. Most US and Canadian students find this system a little bewildering, so we have produced a detailed guide which we can send to you, it’s also available online on our website and we are always available to help and advise throughout the process. This guide also gives a lot of useful practical advice, including the visa process, and contains information which parents may find useful. Canadian students can also use our agents who will help with visa applications, although there is a charge for this – KOM consultants (www. komconsultants.com) Unfortunately, this service is not available in the USA. We encourage students to apply as soon as possible, especially if you want to apply for a SALTIRE scholarship from the Scottish Government, as the closing date for applications is usually May and applicants need to have an offer of a place before applying. Students can withdraw at any time without a penalty. Late applications will be accepted up to mid August, prior to September entry.

HELP AND SUPPORT From enquiry to graduation, the Aberdeen Business School Study Abroad Office is dedicated to assisting you in every aspect of a students’ university life. The small, friendly team will get to know you on a personal level and you will be treated as an individual, not a number. We will also provide a full programme of social events and visits in Aberdeen and throughout Scotland. In addition, the University provides the Student Help Point which is a ‘one-stop shop’ for all non-academic queries, support and advice. From travel to tuition fees, accommodation to application forms, finance to free time the Student Help Point can help, whether on campus or online. For international students, we can assist with Visa information before travel to Aberdeen, as well as with orientation and other help on arrival.

Our Disability and Dyslexia Advice and Support service aims to make RGU’s learning environment accessible to everyone, as well as help students with specific support needs.

ACCOMMODATION

MEDICAL TREATMENT

We are committed to providing safe, secure and affordable accommodation for our students. Our apartments have been designed with student needs in mind.

All International Students are currently entitled to free healthcare on the NHS (National Health Service). This only covers treatment by NHS administered practices.

Residents have access to staff or Residence Assistants (RAs) to offer advice, assistance and support 24 hours a day.

It is important to register with a GP soon after arrival to ensure you are covered in an emergency. We will advise you on arrival and ensure all the necessary arrangements are made.

We know that there is more to University life than studying, so our apartments cater for more than your academic needs. Each study bedroom is equipped to provide a private place to relax or revise, and each apartment contains a communal living area where flatmates and friends can socialise.

Aberdeen is a dynamic, vibrant city, thanks to its strong ties with the oil industry. And as you’d expect from somewhere that has enjoyed great prosperity, amongst the iconic granite buildings are a wealth of fantastic bars and eateries, shops, museums and galleries, theatres and live music venues. Aberdeen is also the perfect size for new arrivals – the city is small enough for you to get to know your way around quickly and easily. We organise or support social events and visits throughout the academic year to provide opportunities to meet and make friends with Scottish and other students from around the world. We also have more than 300 clubs and societies to cater for every social, sporting, voluntary, religious and cultural requirement that you may have.

ABERDEEN BUSINESS SCHOOL

We are immensely proud of the fact that we are host to both staff and students from all around the globe. It gives our campus a genuinely international atmosphere. And we firmly believe that spending time in a country which isn’t your own opens your eyes to new cultures and customs, not only Scottish ones, but also those of the many international students we have here.
