21 May ALAN MOULT

MIKE SALTER

‘Leadership and Innovation’

‘Leadership: Acquisitions and Disposals’

Alan Moult is Managing Director of XPD8 Solutions, a specialist Maintenance Management company providing consultancy advice to the Oil and Gas Industry. XPD8 was set up 5 years ago, employs 40 people in Aberdeen and London, and has a range of blue chip clients including BP, BG, ConocoPhillips, Apache, PetroCanada, Dragon LNG and CNR. He is also a director of Aberdeen Analytics Ltd, a newly formed consultancy specialising in business planning, profit improvement and continuity management.

Originally from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, following a student apprenticeship with the CEGB, Mr Salter moved to Glasgow University graduating in 1974 with B.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering. Returning to the North East of England he worked for four years in the Petrochemicals Industry before moving to Aberdeen in 1978 where in 1980 he joined Bawden Drilling (UK) Ltd being promoted to the Vice President / General Manager in 1987. He moved to Smedvig Limited as Chief Executive in 1990 where for five years he managed a series of intensive change processes as the business grew and adapted to the market.

Prior to joining XPD8, Alan spent 24 years at BP in a range of senior commercial and technical management roles in BP’s Exploration & Production Business, in BP Finance and in BP Engineering. His last role for BP was Director of Business Continuity Planning for the BP Group. In this role he led a team, located in the UK and the US, which was accountable for supporting BP Businesses and Functions worldwide and encouraging them to develop Business Continuity Plans that ensured BP could continue to transact during emergency situations. Alan has also held the post of Director of Business Innovation for BP, where he was responsible for identifying new technologies that could have a significant impact on BP’s business and for encouraging their adoption across the Group. He has managed BP’s external e-investment portfolio where he set up and managed a range of external e-investment start-up companies that sought to encourage partners and the broader industry to exploit digital technologies. Alan has also worked as an engineering consultant in the construction and mining industries. He is a Chartered Civil Engineer with a Masters degree in Finance and a PhD in Fluid Mechanics. Alan has been a key note speaker at Harvard University, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and the University of Edinburgh.

In 1995 he joined Abbot Group plc just as it was undergoing a reverse takeover of a publicly quoted cash shell, being appointed Chief Operating Officer in 1997. Since that time he has been involved in a significant level of corporate activity and the follow on processes which have involved the amalgamation of companies and the development of management teams. He is a past chairman of the International Association of Drilling Contractors North Sea Chapter, and of the British Rig Owners Association. He was involved with CRINE, an industry initiative to improve efficiency in the Upstream Oil and Gas industry and currently sits on PILOT, the joint Government/Industry Liaison group and the underpinning Industry Leadership Team. Retired 31 July 2007, retaining the Chairmanship of Bentec Drilling and Oilfield Services GMBH. July 2007 appointed President of Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce.

21 May (Evening) BOB KEILLER After graduating in 1986, Bob Keiller worked as an engineer for BP, becoming a chartered engineer in 1990. He was then head-hunted by a technical consulting company where he worked for two years. He was head-hunted again by oil producer Amerada Hess in 1992, where he held a variety of management roles across the group. Further career progression at Amerada Hess would have disrupted his children’s education with overseas postings, so an offer to join Halliburton in January 2002 was irresistible. In May 2002 Bob became head of UK operations for the Production Services division within Halliburton subsidiary Kellogg Brown & Root (KBR). Bob refocussed the business, assessing key strengths, divesting non-core assets and improving tender success from one in ten, to nine in ten. Following this success, Bob was made Global MD of the Production Services division in 2004. Recognising that business model for Production Services differed from the rest of KBR, (it was less capital-intensive and had a lower risk profile), Bob saw the opportunity to spin out the division. Bob secured over $400m (US) of funding from the Bank of Scotland Integrated Finance and on 1st May 2006 created PSN through an award-winning $280million (US) management-buy-out. Since the origination of the deal, Bob has overseen a 20% growth in the business with EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation) several million dollars ahead of plan. PSN has also created over 2500 new jobs globally and now employs a network of over 8,500 people, working in 20 countries, across five continents. Bob’s charismatic leadership style, technical operational experience and outstanding commercial acumen has lead the creation of a company with turnover over $1.2 billion, an order book worth more than $2 billion and work secured to 2013.

Under Bob’s leadership, PSN won the ‘Management-Buy-Out’ of the year at the 2006 Scottish Business Insider Deals and Dealmakers awards ceremony, the National Business Awards for Scotland 2007 award for corporate social responsibility and the Scottish Offshore Achievement Award 2007 for ‘succeeding through people’ for creating a corporate culture that inspires the business leaders and technical champions of the future. Bob was declared Entrepreneur of the year at the Entrepreneurial Exchange awards ceremony 2006 and was Insider Elite KPMG Businessman of the Year 2007. Bob is also currently Chairman of the Offshore Contractors Association whose members employ 2/3 of people in the UK offshore oil and gas industry.
