MENTAL HEALTH SOLUTIONS
Whilst protective clothing is standard for working in dangerous and hazardous environments, what protection can employers provide to ensure mental health is also safeguarded? The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) reports that there were 244,000 new cases of work-related stress in 2013/14, out of a total of 487,000 on-going cases. This accounts for over 39% of all workdays lost in the UK, and costs UK employers an estimated £1.24 billion annually. This suggests it is time for employers to start proactively thinking about mental health solutions, rather than concentrating on mental health problems. Mindfulness Based Stress Management (MBSM) Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Person Centred Counselling (PCC)
Mindfulness Based Stress Management (MBSM) Currently one of the most popular mental health solutions, Mindfulness encourages participants to focus on what is happening now, as opposed to becoming engaged in thoughts of future or past events. Mindfulness training is flexible to any audience and working environment and has been shown to significantly reduce stress and anxiety, reduce distraction and increase attention to task. Mindfulness also helps your staff achieve more, and to a higher standard. Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) SFBT is a simple yet revelatory approach based on solution-building rather than problem-solving. It explores current resources and future hopes rather than present problems and past causes, and concentrates on knowing where you want to get to, making getting there much more likely. Questioning what life will be like when the problem is solved, results in detailed planning towards achieving this in a step-wise fashion. Successful outcomes are reported in the majority of cases, and these are typically achieved in half the time taken by other ‘brief’ therapeutic approaches, such as CBT or brief-counselling. This means Solution Focused Brief Therapy is both cost effective and delivers impressive results. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) A long standing technique, CBT is based on the concept that thoughts, actions, feelings and sensations are interconnected, and that negative thoughts and feelings can generate a vicious cycle. CBT aims to help crack this cycle by breaking down overwhelming problems into smaller parts and showing how to change these negative patterns to reduce stress, improve concentration, prioritise and delegate more effectively, and encourage better communication. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy has been integrated into the leadership and organisational resilience programmes of many companies to help support personal and professional growth. Person Centred Counselling (PCC) This is a longer-term therapeutic approach in which, through discussion with the Mental Health Solutions Therapist, the client is enabled to explore their sense of self and how that sense is influenced by people and events around them. Unlike Solution Focused Brief Therapy and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, PCC aims to assist the individual understand themselves as a person, as opposed to simply helping bring about positive change, and is an excellent support service to include in any employee wellbeing programme.
