International Opportunities for Students of Aberdeen Business School

A message from the study abroad team Aberdeen Business School Why study abroad? A venture overseas is a great way to set off on your future career path. For several years now employers have emphasised the value they place on graduates who have direct experience of living or working abroad. As the business world shrinks, global communication and collaboration grows – being competent in a multicultural environment is imperative for graduates today. Aberdeen Business School is extremely proud of the international education we offer our students on campus in Aberdeen, but we encourage all undergraduate students to consider the additional benefits brought by a period of study overseas. With a growing portfolio of new partners across Europe, North America and beyond, you will benefit from the opportunity to take part in well-established and quality controlled international exchanges. In many locations, you will have the chance to study another language – however this is not a requirement for Study Abroad as most partners teach in English. Studying with a European partner institution or undertaking a European work placement may attract an E.U. Erasmus+ grant to help off set any additional costs. In addition to the academic and vocational benefits, previous outgoing students have often spoken of the increased level of confidence they have gained – to say nothing of the friends they have met from around the world and the adventures they have had exploring their new environment! We truly believe taking part in an international exchange is a decision you will never regret. We are always happy to discuss your options and give practical support. We hope that this brochure will encourage you to enhance your future employability and CV whilst having the time of your life! Bon voyage!

WHAT IS STUDY ABROAD All undergraduate programmes at Aberdeen Business School include the opportunity for a period of study abroad with one of our carefully chosen international partners. Currently the courses which include the opportunity for Study Abroad are: BA (Hons) Management BA (Hons) Management with Marketing BA (Hons) Management with Human Resources BA (Hons) International Business Management BA (Hons) International Hospitality Management BA (Hons) International Tourism Management BA (Hons) Law and Management LLB Law BA (Hons) Media

The study abroad period is an integrated part of your course – so all of the credits you achieve at our partner institutions count towards your RGU degree – and without any loss of time. Most students are eligible and entry into the programme depends on your academic record so far, as well as your motivation to make the most of your time abroad. There are two major types of programme – Erasmus+ and Study Abroad. Erasmus+ is the European Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students, and is part of the Life Long Learning Programme. With Erasmus+ you can receive an EUfunded grant to help you with the costs of living and studying abroad. You may be able to apply to go abroad for a minimum of 1 semester and a maximum of 2 semesters (depending on the course you are taking), and you can take part even if you don’t speak a foreign language! Regardless of whether you are an EU citizen, you can take part in Erasmus+. Non-Erasmus+ exchange takes place at our partner institutions outside of Europe. For this type of exchange there is no grant to support the costs, but many of our partners operate a fee-waiver scheme which means that you continue to pay your fees to RGU as usual (e.g. by SAAS or LEA funding or international fees), and you will just pay the costs of travel, accommodation and subsistence in the host country. A small number of our partners do charge fees, and this is noted in the brochure. All of the partners in the non-Erasmus+ programme teach in English. These Study Abroad programmes offer you an additional educational and cultural experience which is part of your accredited qualification with RGU*. Study Abroad enhances your CV as many employers like to have graduates with some international experience, so students who undertake such programmes will widen the employment opportunities available to them after their course. There are also opportunities to undertake your work placement in Europe, supported by an Erasmus+ grant.

BA (Hons) Journalism BA (Hons) Public Relations BA (Hons) Events Management

WHERE CAN I GO?

BA (Hons) Fashion Management BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance We regret that Masters students are not normally eligible for Study Abroad. PHD students ARE eligible and should contact the Study Abroad office for more details If you would like to discuss your Study Abroad options further, please contact the Study Abroad Office for more information: ABSStudyAbroad@rgu.ac.uk

Where you go depends on the course you are studying. Each participating course has its own partner institutions in different countries. Most of the courses have more than one partner institution, so you can choose which institution or country is most suitable for you.** This brochure illustrates our numerous partner institutions. Each one has its own section to give you a clear overview of the partner and each destination has an introduction to the place where the institution is based to help you make your decision. Remember – where you go does not always depend on the languages you speak. Most courses will be taught in English and many institutions will also offer a language course that can be followed to help you assimilate into the local community.

*Failure to gain the expected number of credits on Study Abroad may mean extending your course to obtain your RGU qualifications. **Please note – student places can be limited at some of the more popular destinations.

FH Salzburg About THE University

About Salzburg

With more than 2000 students, FH Salzburg is one of the most important educational establishments in Austria. FH Salzburg offers students a sound University education with international quality standards, supported by the principles of science, professional skills, diversity and sustainability.

The region of Salzburg is a site of global cultural heritage. This is harmonically combined with nature as the city’s Baroque style architecture is encircled by fields, forests, snowy mountain peaks and lakes. Historical buildings, places where worldfamous artists like Mozart worked, sports activities like skiing or golfing – all that and more can be found in Salzburg. Transport networks are well established, allowing a fast transition from the city to the countryside or to Salzburg Airport, making it easy to travel further afield.

Self-paced, self-directed learning and reflective action is required and promoted as a principle of the academic didactic. The University’s commitment to innovation is reflected in the study programmes and participation in international networks. For all incoming students, German language courses are offered free of charge. Both the Urstein and Kuchl campuses are interconnected and minutes away from Salzburg. The University campuses offer a wide range of sports and leisure facilities and teaching capabilities, such as the innovative robotic laboratory, and their media lab with multimedia technology installations for learning and research. Students also have access to the Rif Sports Center and a beach volleyball court on campus.

Capilano University, VANcouver About THE University

About VANCOUVER

The Capilano campus — or rather campuses, as there are three of them — are striking in their uncommon beauty. Lush forests, towering mountains and stunning plant life will put your mind at ease, even if it’s tormented with thoughts of six looming assignment deadlines, a dwindling student loan, and a roommate who insists on eating all your leftover pizza while you sleep. In a teaching institution like Capilano, the instructors are engaged primarily in teaching. They’re people who will take the time to figure out your learning style, your needs, and your strengths, which is made possible by keeping class sizes to less than 35 students.

Vancouver is arguably the ideal destination for a study abroad semester. Its population of around 600,000 is ethnically diverse, with over half of the residents stating their first language as something other than English. Vancouver is consistently named as one of the top five worldwide cities for “livability” and quality of life, and it’s easy to see why: with a thriving arts scene, a nickname of “Hollywood North” due to its film and TV production success, its mild climate and proximity to ocean, mountains, rivers and lakes, you can understand why so many people want to live here.

There is a performing arts theatre situated on campus, a student-only cinema, and an exceptional athletics program, with league teams in soccer, basketball, and volleyball. The Capilano Courier will keep you up-to-date with the latest news and events on campus, and you might even decide to get involved with its publishing while you’re over there.

CANADA

Carleton University, OTTAWA About THE University

About OTTAWA

The history of Carleton University is somewhat unusual. The University was founded in 1942 to offer opportunities to the youth population of Ottawa, many of whom had been forced to take on jobs to help out their families in the wake of the Depression. From these humble beginnings, the institution has grown into a modern, state-of-the-art place to learn and is proud to have a student population of more than 24,000 students.

Ottawa is conveniently situated just a few hours’ drive from Toronto, Montreal and the United States – perfect for students who want to make the most of their time across the pond. Ottawa is perhaps thought of primarily as the seat of Canada’s federal government, but it has much more to offer. Ottawa is a truly beautiful city with something for each one of its one million inhabitants. With ample historic architecture, peaceful interconnecting waterways, picturesque parks, and extensive walking and biking trails, the possibilities are almost endless. During the colder months, the plethora of shops, international restaurants, movie theatres and nightclubs provide plenty of entertainment downtown.

The one hundred acre campus is located just a short distance from downtown Ottawa, and it is possibly partly due to this that Carleton retains a strong link to the community – both in Canada’s capital and further afield. The University offers fascinating opportunities to students, such as the “Alternative Spring Break”, the chance to take part in community service programmes, as well as Project Homeless Connect – a student initiative which endeavours to reach out to the local homeless community. Additionally, Carleton has more than 160 active clubs and societies to choose from. The University has a strong research background, and currently there are more than 850 research projects underway in all five faculties. Carleton considers itself at the forefront of research in multiple fields, including health, digital media, sustainability and the environment, and globalisation.

KEA Copenhagen School of Design & Technology About THE University KEA - Copenhagen School of Design and Technology prides itself on providing practice-oriented higher education at Bachelor’s level, developed in close cooperation with the region’s business community and educational institutions in Denmark and abroad. They seek to remain in constant contact with companies and industry associations to keep education programmes current, relevant and forward-thinking. KEA realises that study abroad opportunities are growing increasingly important in making graduates more employable, and as such they strive to provide you with a wealth of international contacts – something crucial in a globalised marketplace. KEA believes that learning is a social activity, and therefore the majority of assignments are carried out in project groups of 3 to 5 people. Students attend classes which are set up to feel more like a design agency than a University classroom. These classes are undertaken in the same ‘office’ area each day, and students often work on projects for real businesses, with regular client meetings and feedback. This provides invaluable experience, as well as a real insight into the world of Danish and international business.

Nanyang Polytechnic About the polytechnic

About singapore

Nanyang Polytechnic was established in April 1992 and moved to its permanent home in Ang Mo Kio six years later. The campus is modelled on a town-centre concept to provide the conveniences of a self-contained “Teaching and Learning City”. The numerous student facilities include a fully computerised library, an on-site post office, several laboratories, a Theatre for the Arts and NYP’s own auditorium. Sporty students will feel really at home with the adventure challenge park, tennis court and rock-climbing walls, as well as the Olympic-sized swimming pool and state-of-the-art gym. There are abundant student societies too, and you’re sure to find something to suit you whether your interests lie in art, culture, sport or academia. Additionally, there is an International Students Club which works closely with the Office for International Students, and helps out with international student enquiries.

Singapore is a fascinating place to be. Modern Singapore was founded in 1819 by Sir Stamford Raffles as a trading post of the East India Company, and there are many buildings and statues in his honour today, such as the famous Raffles Hotel. Singapore is a huge financial centre for Asia, and the abundance of office blocks and lack of space mean it is a highly urbanized country. Singapore is consistently ranked as one of the least corrupt countries in the world, and is extremely safe for tourists and residents alike. Dining, along with shopping, is said to be the country’s national pastime, and the unique cultural and ethnic mix found in Singapore makes for some interesting dishes. Public transport is efficient and convenient throughout the city, and as Changi airport is an international hub airport you could easily jump on a flight and explore the nearby countries in your free time.

Keimyung University About the University Keimyung University was founded in 1954 by the leaders of the Northern Presbyterian Church, and has three campuses, all located in the city of Daegu. The University is home to 27,000 students and over 2,400 faculty members and employees, and is very internationally focused. KMU has exchange agreements or Memoranda of Understanding with 302 affiliated Universities and institutions in 52 countries worldwide, which is the most extensive international exchange network among Korean Universities. The international student population sits at around 1,300 and the University is well equipped to ensure that all new international students are shown how to be Korean from the outset! KMU boasts a fantastic Buddy Program which matches new international students with KMU domestic students to provide friendship and cultural exchanges throughout their stay. International students also have the opportunity to participate in the Keimyung Cross-Cultural Awareness Program (KMU-CCAP). Supported by the Korean National Commission for UNESCO, the programme is designed to augment international understanding in Korean primary and secondary schools while promoting a culture of tolerance and mutual respect. KMU-CCAP invites international students residing in Korea to Korean school classrooms in order to talk about their own culture to Korean students.

About DAEGU Daegu is the fourth largest city in South Korea, and its name literally means Big Hill. In the second half of the twentieth century, the city underwent explosive growth, and the population has increased more than tenfold since the end of the Korean War. The major industries of the Daegu area are textiles, metals, machinery and (somewhat oddly) apples! This may be due to the fact that Daegu is situated in the warmest part of the country and experiences rain only in the summer months. If you spend your study abroad experience in Daegu, you must visit the most famous sight in the city - the stone Buddha called Gatbawi. He is said to grant your heart’s true desire, and as such people flock to visit the statue from all over the country.

Hanyang University About the University

About seoul

Hanyang University in Seoul, South Korea is big on international students. The University enrolls over 1,500 international students each year and more than 1,700 of their students study abroad annually. The University boasts 339 partner institutions in 42 countries, and through its Global Hanyang program has sought to expand international ties by recruiting international students, and by setting up cooperative programs with Universities throughout the world. International students are by no means alone at Hanyang.

Seoul has been the capital of South Korea for 600 years, and is a bustling modern city, which retains its history with dignity. The city is fast-paced and technology-driven – the perfect destination for forward thinking students – yet at the same time, visitors can acquaint themselves with endless cultural experiences. All this can be done with logistical ease, as the Seoul subway system is one of the most convenient and fastest systems in the world.

Arguably the biggest advantage of going to Hanyang is the opportunity to participate in the TaLK programme – Teach and Learn in Korea. RGU students who participate in the programme, which involves them teaching English to Korean school or University students, are eligible for a large financial incentive which helps with travel costs, accommodation fees and living expenses. As well as helping you out financially, this is a unique way to learn about Korean culture and to integrate yourself into the population of your new home.

The traditional epicentre of Seoul is found in the Gwangwhamun district where numerous palaces, shrines, and temples can be found, along with traditional Korean markets which delight the senses. However, despite the fact that Seoul is one of the world’s largest cities, its extensive urbanisation has never meant the abandonment of natural areas dedicated to preservation of wildlife. Nature lovers will soon learn that an excursion is never too far away.

The institution was re-established as a University in 1974, and was officially renamed the University of Seoul towards the end of the 1990s. Since then, the wide offering of programs and research projects have surged to the national and international forefront, cementing the University’s position as a desirable destination for all students. Currently, the student body consists of around 7,500 undergraduate students and 2,500 graduate students. International students are well looked after, with a buddy system to ensure the transition to Korean life is as smooth as possible. In additional, the University offers “Global Café S” – an international student hub with wireless internet services as well as study and seminar space in which workshops, lectures and seminars regularly take place. Students are encouraged to join a campus group according to their interests, and there are around 50 of these groups currently on offer. Interestingly, there is a University museum on site which houses approximately 3,200 pieces in its collection. The museum also holds a special annual exhibition to showcase its history.

The traditional epicenter of Seoul is found in the Gwangwhamun district where numerous palaces, shrines, and temples can be found, along with traditional Korean markets which delight the senses. However, despite the fact that Seoul is one of the world’s largest cities, its extensive urbanisation has never meant the abandonment of natural areas dedicated to preservation of wildlife. Nature lovers will soon learn that an excursion is never too far away.

It’s a college experience you’ll always remember.

Everyone’s heard the stereotype: it’s all cowboys, cactus and cattle. While those Texas roots are strong, Houston will surprise you with everything it has to offer. The tencounty region is the largest city not only in Texas, but the whole Southern United States. Here the grass is green, landscaping is lush and the tree canopy is thick and widespread. It’s the perfect mix of Southern greenery and urban sophistication. Known as the Bayou City, the Houston metro area—the sixth largest in the nation—is criss-crossed by a number of bayous, many of them flowing into Buffalo Bayou, the site of the city’s birthplace in the downtown area. Fun in the Bayou City is easy to find. Houston’s downtown has been revitalised with numerous clubs, professional sports facilities and musical entertainment that have helped bring nightlife back to downtown. And that’s in addition to the rest of the City’s attractions, shopping and restaurants to fit all budgets. This opportunity is subject to contract.

Humboldt State University, California About the University

About ARCATA

Innovation begins with the way HSU approach the teacher-student relationship. Many colleges boast prestigious, but distant, faculty members. HSU students actually know their world-renowned professors. In addition to being leaders in the sciences and humanities, HSU professors are committed to mentoring their students by including them in all kinds of experiments, lab research, and field work.

Arcata was originally named Union Town or Union, and is located in the northern part of Humboldt Bay in California. Around 17,000 people live in the city, so if a big American city-style exchange is what you’re seeking then Arcata may not be what you imagined! That said, it is a charming place to live and the true definition of a “college town”. Everything is centred on the fact that Humboldt State University is one of the main reasons to live in the vicinity, and it is less than a mile’s walk from the campus to the city centre.

At Humboldt State, learning isn’t limited to sitting in a classroom and taking notes. Why is this important? Because success in the job market, whether you wind up in business, zoology or any field in between, requires strong entrepreneurial and critical thinking skills. The HSU emphasis on combining classroom learning with hands-on experience, will help you gain those critical skills. It’s an innovative approach to education that yields results. It’s also something rarely found at an undergraduate school. Living on campus is a great way to meet friends and get connected with all the events and resources, hosted right here at Humboldt State. As an on-campus resident, you have immediate access to all your classes, faculty and student services. Fringe benefits include living just a few minutes’ walk from a stateof-the-art gym, the largest performing arts theatre in the area, and several great coffee shops and eateries.

For being a relatively small place, there are lots of important facts about Arcata. It was the first city in the USA to elect a city council with a Green Party majority. Naturally, this had a noticeable effect on the city itself – for example, the number of chain restaurants within the city has been capped, and the largest farmer’s market in the Humboldt State area finds its home in Arcata. Additionally, the city has plentiful green open space for the enjoyment of its residents. Being a coastal city, the temperature here is slightly lower than you might expect from somewhere in California. In fact, it rarely rises above 20 degrees Celsius. However, travelling just a few miles inland brings you to much warmer climates and provides you with ample outdoor activities to try. The community forest is a peaceful place to go for walks or hikes, and the North Coast Adventure Centre might appeal to more adventurous students!

About the University

about aberdeen

Imagine spending your semester abroad in Aberdeen. No, really! Aberdeen, South Dakota that is – the home of Northern State University. Although only officially classed as a University in 1989, the institution has been in existence since the late 1800s. The campus is situated in a 72 acre area on the southern side of the city, with the oldest buildings (Lincoln, Kirkac, and Spafford) located on the green. RGU students would be likely to spend most of their time at the Mewaldt Jensen building, the home of the business school.

Aberdeen has a population of around 26,000 and was founded by the Sioux people in the 18th century. The city as we know it today was built up around the railroads, and soon became known as the “Hub City of the Dakotas” due to its location at the intersection of four railway lines. The first Super 8 motel was constructed here, and still operates today. Although small, Aberdeen has much to offer residents and visitors alike. The new Family Aquatic Centre provides fun for all, while boating and nature trails can be found at Richmond Lake. Sports such as golf and tennis are popular, and you might even visit Storybook Land – sound familiar?!

The NSU Student Center is at the heart of Northern’s student life: a place to eat, work, shop, socialise and meet. The focus here is on enabling social interaction between all students: there are fireplaces for having a cosy chat with friends, pool tables and an online gaming room, all-you-can-eat student dining, a 200-seat cinema and a ballroom for large events. If sport is more your thing, you will no doubt find yourself among the North State Wolves, the athletics team. There are several sports in which you can participate as an athlete or an enthusiastic spectator, and fitness classes, courses and seminars are open to all.

Oklahoma State University About the University Oklahoma State University (OSU) provides students with the real “all American” University experience. The University football team is the pride of the school, and the bright orange colours of the uniform are unmistakeable around the town of Stillwater. The University also has its own First Cowgirl (or First Lady) who spearheads initiatives such as Pet Therapy to relieve stress, and has made the University “America’s Healthiest Campus”. The thriving student union makes OSU a really fun place to study, and provides students with endless support, advice and recreational inspiration. Events such as the Howdy Dance and a “Dive-In” Movie screened in the on campus pool are abundant. The OSU campus is one of exceptional beauty with modified Georgian style architecture. The campus includes a library (one of the largest in the State of Oklahoma); a Student Union complete with hotel facilities, barbershops, a post office, cafeterias, and a theatre; a student health centre; and a large student recreation centre and cultural centres for visual and performing arts. Residence halls are within walking distance of all buildings on campus, but transport is available on and off campus and is free for students. Cowboy trail walks have also been created to encourage oncampus fitness between classes.

about stillwater Stillwater was one of the 100 top places to live in 2010, according to CNN Money Magazine. It has a population of around 50,000 and has a humid sub-tropical climate, with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit ten times each year. Stillwater is known as the home of red dirt music and also the home of Eskimo Joe’s, the “Best College Post-Game Hangout” as named by Sporting News magazine. For some peace and relaxation, head to the botanical gardens or the OSU Gardiner Art Gallery on campus.

The University of Tulsa provides undergraduate, graduate, and professional education of the highest quality in the arts, humanities, sciences, business, education, engineering, law, nursing, and applied health sciences. In particular, UT is noted for having one of the world’s premier programs in petroleum engineering, and their Law School is one of the few in the USA to specialise in Native American legal issues. Several things make UT a desirable place to spend a semester abroad. The H. A. Chapman Stadium is an impressive structure, with souvenir shops and the obligatory hot dog vendors to keep hunger at bay while watching the big game. The McFarlin Library dates back to 1930 and houses three million items of interest, as well as being one of the campuses most notable landmarks. UT runs The Food Garden, a student-run organic garden that is able to provide food to dining services on campus, as well as more than 200 student organisations. UT was also one of the first Universities in the United States to have a mosque located on campus.

About tulsa TU’s 200-acre campus is located two miles east of downtown Tulsa, a metropolitan city with a population exceeding a half a million people. The city’s remarkable cultural, technological, and economic resources are boundless, which makes the city a very interesting place to be. Around 400,000 people live in the city, and it held the nickname “Oil Capital of the World” for much of the 20th century. Tulsa houses two world-renowned art museums, full-time professional opera and ballet companies, and one of the nation’s largest concentrations of art deco architecture, which cement its place as an attractive cultural city as well as an industrial one.

Check the timing of the Study Abroad period in your course as these can vary.

Come into the Study Abroad office for a chat and have all your questions answered.

The Support Available Support is available from the Study Abroad Office and your Course or Programme Leader – we are all happy to talk through any issues with you at any time.

Funding and Costs

4

3

Discuss it with friends/family.

Decide if this type of programme is right for you.

5 Notify the Study Abroad Office and your Course/Programme Leader if you wish to be considered for the programme – the sooner the better. You can do this with an ‘Expression of Interest Form’ available from the Study Abroad Office or on Moodle.

82

Details of financial support can be found at www.britishcouncil.org/ Erasmus+

Health and Safety RGU takes your health and safety very seriously. In addition to the rigorous checks we undertake with our Study Abroad partners, you are also required to attend a compulsory Health and Safety briefing before departure. Legislation varies from country to country, but we will go through some basic steps that everyone can take to minimise risk. It is also important that you are informed about the insurance requirements for your stay and the policies that RGU has put in place to help you.

Please note:

7

The Study Abroad Administrators (Duncan Harcus and Morag MacRae) will then keep in touch on the next stage of the process.

Selection of students will initially be made by Course/Programme leaders and is based upon your academic progress so far.

To be eligible for Erasmus+, students must be formally registered at an HEI which holds a standard EUC, whatever the field of study, in order to follow higher education studies leading to a recognised degree or other recognised tertiary level qualification, up to and including the level of doctorate. Further information is available from the Campus Moodle module ‘Study Abroad with ABS’.

WHAT ABOUT A WORK PLACEMENT ABROAD? Going abroad for your placement is not the easiest decision to make: there are some expenses up front (visa fees, flights, insurance, academic costs etc.), it might seem daunting to leave home, family and friends, to go through the hurdles of finding your way around in a foreign country, arranging accommodation, getting used to a different way of thinking, etc. However 91% of managers interviewed in the research conducted by a German psychologist reported that their international experience had significant positive effects on their personality and 82% said it improved their professional development. So working abroad can be an extremely rewarding experience on both a personal and professional level. The business world is shrinking, and managers who are able to think globally are in high demand. That’s why an international experience is very likely to boost your graduate career prospects and even change the way you see the world and yourself. Year long placements are paid – the majority of European placements are supported by Erasmus+ funding. Contact the Placement office for more details. If you choose to work abroad you can expect to… • Gain greater self confidence • Develop greater listening skills • Gain a greater appreciation of different cultures • Develop a wider range of transferable skills for your CV • Have a greater thirst for knowledge • Become more independent

Each year the Placement Office advertises a variety of placement opportunities abroad. Our tourism, hospitality and management students have obtained a variety of jobs in locations such as: • United States of America • The Netherlands • France • Spain • Poland

• Develop faster decision making skills

These are just a sample of our locations. Visit the ABS Placement Office for more details.

Frequently Asked Questions Who finds accommodation for me?

Do I have to get extra health insurance?

You do! This can be simple with Universities which provide their own accommodation, but make sure that you apply earlier than their published deadlines. Some Universities do not provide accommodation but will normally advise on the availability of private accommodation. Both University and private accommodation may require up-front payments, but be aware of scams in the private sector. ABS Study Abroad Office regrets that we are unable to help find accommodation (unless under emergency circumstances) and so sometimes, this can be a chore – but it’s all part of learning to deal with problems and issues in a different culture. Never sign a contract in a foreign language unless you are 100% sure that you know what it says.

Normally no, as this is covered by the RGU policy. You will need to provide your own travel insurance and insurance for your personal goods. Dangerous sports are not covered under the RGU policy, therefore, those undertaking the ski resort management programme in Canada should seek further information from the Study Abroad Office. U.S. and Canadian institutions may request you to take out their policy, but in MOST (but not all) cases, we have negotiated a waiver agreement. Insurance is one of the important topics which will be covered in your pre-departure briefing.

Do I still matriculate as an RGU student even though I am matriculated at my host institution?

The cost of living varies considerably. In many countries, living costs are lower than in the UK but in others they can be higher. Many countries have a variety of student reductions in order to make life cheaper. Wherever you go, you will find that the Study Abroad experience, with its many benefits, is great value for money.

Yes – you are still earning credits towards your RGU qualification. If you are SAAS funded, you should also apply for funding in the same way as you do in other years, just remember to tick the relevant box to notify them that you are studying abroad during the upcoming year.

How do I keep in contact with Aberdeen Business School? The easiest way is by email, by telephone is sometimes difficult if there is a large time difference. Remember to check your RGU mail account regularly. You host institution will probably provide an email account for you, but at RGU we can only deal with your communication if it is through YOUR RGU account.

84

What will it cost to live abroad?

Do I pay tuition fees? Host institution: you do not pay tuition fees to the institution you are visiting if you go on Erasmus+ or if there is a fee wavier agreement in place, which is the case with the majority of our partners. Otherwise you need to pay tuition. Home institution: tuition fees will still be charged by the University, however funding is normally available to Scottish and EU students by applying to SAAS (or the relevant Local Education Authority for English, Welsh and Northern Irish students).

What happens to my student grant and loan?

PhD Students

During your time abroad you continue to receive any student grant or loan to which you are entitled.

Students studying for a full-time PhD at Aberdeen Business School are eligible to apply for Erasmus+ funding.

What is The Erasmus+ grant? Students going to Europe also normally receive an additional Erasmus+ grant provided by the European Commission towards the extra costs of studying abroad. The Study Abroad Office can guide you through the process. There are no nationality restrictions on students who wish to participate in an exchange, although visa requirements of the host country still apply. The Erasmus+ programme is open to all higher education students (up to and including doctorate) from a participating country. However, you cannot be in the first year or, in the majority of cases, in the final year of your degree.

The exchange must take place within one of ABS’s Erasmus+ partner Universities within the programme countries. We cannot consider an exchange with an institution which is not already partner – most are listed in this brochure, however, a completely up-to-date list can be obtained from the Study Abroad Office. The exchange cannot take place in your native country. The exchange period must count towards your PhD. The exchange period must last a minimum of 3 consecutive months and a maximum of 12 consecutive months. The exchange must be full-time. You can only receive an Erasmus+ grant for a maximum of 12 months in each study level (i.e. undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral studies). If you are interested, please contact Prof. Seonaidh McDonald (Graduate School Leader) in the first instance.

Masters Students Regrettably students of ABS studying on a Masters programme are not eligible for Erasmus+ Funding. Undergraduate students who are considering studying at another European Institution after graduation may be eligible for soft loans from the EU. Further information can be obtained from: http://ec.europa.eu/education/opportunities/higher-education/ masters-loans_en.htm

85

Study Abroad Competitions Each year, the Study Abroad Office will offer cash prizes (Amazon vouchers) and a Crystal plaque for:

The Best Photo The Best Short Video The Best Blog The competitions are run twice a year – once in each semester – and all participating students are invited to submit their work.
