from the PUBLISHER

As a son of a Breast Cancer Survivor, I know the many prayers that are whispered, and the deep appreciation for the doctors and staff that brought my mother through her illness. The medical advances today are leaps and bounds from when my mother had her surgeries and treatments a few decades ago, but still more research needs to be done in order for us to cure this horrible disease and many others. Every year my family gets together, as millions do across the country, to help raise money for the research desperately needed to achieve such a monumental task. But as Catholics, we must be cognizant of where we choose to send our fundraising money or form our allegiances. We must make sure that whatever charity we choose to support does not go against our religious or moral beliefs. Fortunately, there is no guess work here. The Archdiocese has already done most of the research for us, and gives us suggestions to allow us to follow our beliefs. I cannot consciously condone any research for the betterment of a cure if it’s foundation is grounded in the murder of innocent lives, nor would I ever knowingly support that foundation monetarily or any other way. Before you give or support, do your research to make sure that organizations is true to your beliefs. A simple call to the parish, or search on the website of the Archdiocese will help you make an informed and educated decision. I hope that someday soon that no family will have to endure what our family went through years ago when my mother fought for her life. I pray for a cure for breast cancer and every other disease known to man. But I ask myself at what cost are we willing to find this cure? I am reminded of a quote I read many years ago in college from the book, The Brothers Karamazov, by Dostoyevsky: “Imagine that you are creating a fabric of human destiny with the object of making men happy in the end, giving them peace and rest at last. Imagine that you are doing this but that it is essential and inevitable to torture to death only one tiny creature... in order to found that edifice on its unavenged tears. Would you consent to be the architect on those conditions? Tell me. Tell the truth.” Your Brother in Christ,

Robert Ludwig

Ringing in the

LEGACY

St. Joseph’s Academy Celebrates 175 Years! by Madison Cowan

S

t. Joseph’s Academy kicked off their yearlong celebration of a 175-year legacy on August 28, 2015. To start the celebration, they began with the ringing of the chapel bells for the first time since the early 1960s. Turning 175 this year makes St. Joe one of the oldest schools in the city, and the oldest all-girls school west of the Mississippi. St. Joseph’s Academy, located at 2307 S. Lindbergh Blvd. since 1955, is a Catholic all-girls secondary school founded and still sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. It was Sister Winifred Adelsberger, CSJ, a young 90 years of age, who first had the idea to ring the bell. Sr. Winifred served as assistant principal in the late 1960s, and has worked in the school’s development department for the past ten years. Most people were not even aware that the bell, originally purchased for $2,500, was still in the chapel. Sr. Carol Gerondale, CSJ, was given the honor of acting bell ringer. Sr. Carol has served "St. Joe" for 31 years--first as a teacher of theology, and later in the development department with the “Future Angels.” In speaking with Sr. Carol after ringing in the celebration she said, “My hands are still shaking with excitement! I could not have been more honored to receive this opportunity. St. Joe has

been my life for more than 31 years,!and to see the legacy continue to grow and flourish is truly a gift.” After the ringing of the special bell, more than 600 students, faculty and staff continued the celebration by forming a giant "student body SJA" photographed by a videography drone. The celebrations aren’t ending here! Another graduate of St. Joe, and long-time member of the school’s English department, Jeanne Wilson, is telling the story of the Academy’s legacy through a book entitled, St. Joseph’s Academy: 175 Years of Tradition, Excellence and Faith. The book will debut as part of "Angel Fest" on October 17 with a signing and presentation by the author. Future merriments include a 175th Anniversary Gala on February 27, 2016, and an Alumnae Mass and Brunch in April, 2016. The story of St. Joe began in 1836 when six young sisters travelled across from Lyons, France to answer an appeal from the Bishop Joseph Rosati for teachers, specifically to minister to children who had lost their hearing due to illness. The Sisters of St. Joseph opened a convent school,

who had lost their hearing due to illness. The Sisters of St. Joseph opened a convent school, which was then St. Joseph Institute for the Deaf. In 1840, they continued to grow and decided to open St. Joseph's Academy (aka "The Academy") at 6400 Minnesota Avenue. The property and beautiful log cabin is still owned by the religious community and and is home to its motherhouse. In 1841, a three-story building was constructed, and is one of the original seven brick structures in St. Louis to survive a series of fires in the mid1800s. In 1925, the congregation, growing quickly and with dreams of opening a women’s college, purchased 16.5 acres in Clayton, at one time part of the World’s Fair grounds. St. Joe, with more than 100 students and a two-year-old Fontbonne College made the move to Wydown and Big Bend Boulevards. Both schools continued to grow so rapidly in their new location that 21 years later, the order purchased 37 acres in the Frontenac, on Lindbergh, to be the future home of the Academy. One word I heard repeated over and over during my visit was "legacy." From the school's beginning the women and sisters have created a legacy of character and faith, inspiring thousands of young women over its 175 years. Not only is that evident in the loyalty of St. Joe families, but also in the service that they provide in the community around them. When talking with Principal Jennifer Sudekum, St. Joe class of ‘93, she said, “St. Joseph’s Academy continues to amaze me with the outreach and faith-based community we are able to generate to this day. To be able to see my alma mater reach its 175th anniversary while serving as principal...I am very blessed.” In the words of Linda Decker, Director of Development, “St. Joseph’s Academy is committed to developing young women to be 'values-driven leaders,' upholding the school’s motto, 'Not I, But We.'" This is exactly what they have done, and will continue to do through their ever-inspiring traditions and legacy. Cheers, ladies!

requirements, tuition and fees, and other pertinent information for each of the 27 Catholic high schools. High School Nights A series of High School Nights are scheduled in September and October each year at various locations around the Archdiocese. These are held in the evening, and provide students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade and their parents an opportunity to hear from representatives of the Catholic high schools about their programs and policies. Parents and students are encouraged to take advantage of the High School Nights as they

continue the process of considering high school selection. This year’s High School Night locations are schools represented at each can be found at archstl.org. High School Open House The Catholic high schools host an Open House on the first Sunday in November. Students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade and their parents are invited to tour the high school facilities and learn about their programs. Please see schedule below, which is also posted at archstl.org. The high schools are generally open in the afternoon, but times at individual schools will

Which is BetterSame-Sex or Coed High Schools?

T

he simple answer to this often-debated question is… both are good and neither is “better.” As with all considerations in choosing the right high school for your son or daughter, the most critical deciding factor is what is “right” for YOUR son or daughter. In the Archdiocese of St. Louis, we are truly blessed with 27 Catholic high schools! Few dioceses across the nation can offer that variety! And, because of that, it is almost guaranteed there is a Catholic high school for your son or daughter! But be prepared! This can be a stressful and emotionally-charged decision for your family. You may feel pressure from relatives that have created a virtual legacy at a certain school, and you may feel a need to choose it out of “loyalty,” whether it is the best choice for your child or not. Or, “all your child’s friends” may be leaning toward one school over another, and the pressure may be to choose to apply where “everybody else” is going. There is a tendency sometimes to be drawn into the comfort zone of moving on with a peer group in the transition from elementary to high school. On the other hand, a completely new school with new friends and a

healthy level of stretching beyond one’s comfort zone might be just what your eighth-grader needs! As a former elementary principal, I always encouraged my students and their parents to take their time throughout the middle-school years to explore a variety of schools, learn about their

family decision. Your principal is a valuable resource for advice. Consult him or her, too. Research is inconclusive as to which model—coed or singlesex—is more effective in educating boys and girls. Some say girls have more opportunities to excel in math and science and leadership

programs, (academic, spiritual, athletic and social) attend high schools nights each year during sixth, seventh and eighth grade, and high school Open House Sundays, always held on the first Sunday of November. The decision should be a careful, prayerful and informed

roles in a single-sex school; others will counter that coed schools are more representative of the world of work and family life. Some say teachers are able to focus on the learning styles most effective with girls or boys in single-sex schools, but today, most teachers are well-

trained in differentiated instruction, including the ways boys and girls learn best, as well as how students with learning disabilities, varied interests, etc. can be most successful. And, there is the “distraction factor” that may or may not pose a challenge for your student. This is an issue on which only you and your son or daughter can weigh out the pro’s and con’s. And finally, as a proud alum of one of St. Louis’ private allgirl Catholic high schools, I can honestly say I took one path, and it worked out for me, but I always wonder what it would have been like to have chosen the other. What I know for sure is that graduates of Catholic high schools in St. Louis are well-prepared for college—99% of them will enroll! Graduates of Catholic high schools are more likely to remain active in their faith. Graduates of Catholic high schools will fill many of the corporate and civic leadership positions in St. Louis. And, graduates of Catholic schools love to ask and answer, “Where’d you go to high school?” May God bless you in this important decision-making process—one of many you will make together with your son or daughter!

TEEN TALK

by Father Augustine Wetta

F

When a man is elected abbot, he should govern his disciples by a twofold teaching; namely, he should show them all that is good and holy by his deeds more than by his words... Let him so adjust and adapt himself to each one according to his character and understanding– that he not only suffer no loss in his flock, but may rejoice in the increase of a worthy fold. And let the abbot always bear in mind that he will be held accountable by God Himself for both his own teaching and for the obedience of his disciples. -Chapter 2: What Sort of Man the Abbot Should Be

or a monk, the abbot takes the place of Christ in this world. His monks owe him respect, love, and above all, obedience. But unlike Christ, the abbot is imperfect. In one sense, therefore, every abbot is a hypocrite, because it is his job to teach his monks how to do something that even he can’t do. I’m guessing this is why Saint Benedict named this chapter “What Sort of Man the Abbot Should Be,” and not, “What Sort of Man the Abbot Is.” No matter. We owe him obedience because God put him in charge. This is why we call him “abbot,” an ancient word for “Father.” The abbot, like any parent, receives his authority from God. Every culture in the world recognizes that, unless parents do real harm to their children, no one has the right to take this authority away from them. But right around our teenage years, we begin to realize that this authority is neither earned, nor deserved, nor even effectively managed. Our parents demand things of us that they themselves would never do. They forbid things that they would never give up. All sorts of rules apply to us, but very few seem to apply to them. Do you obey your parents, then, because they deserve it? Because they’ve earned it? Do you obey your parents because they lead such exemplary lives of virtue that you simply can’t imagine doing otherwise? No. You obey your parents because they have been put in authority over you by God. You obey your mother and father simply because they are your mother and father. You don’t need another reason. In short, your parents—and even your teachers—deserve your respect and obedience at all times. Not just some of the time. Not just when you

feel like it. Not just when your own opinion happens to coincide with theirs. Not just when they provide satisfactory explanations. But always, and especially in matters of moral and spiritual significance. Not because your parents have earned it. Not because they happen to be older, or smarter, or wiser than you, (though all of these are probably true) but simply because they are your parents, and they love you. Now there are times when you may disagree with your parents. There are times when their rules may seem burdensome or silly to you. There will be times when they makes decisions which you do not understand and are reluctant to obey. Obey them anyway. And, if you find all their explanations, all their exhortations, and all their prayers unconvincing, (and no doubt, the day will come when you do) obey them anyway, and for this reason only: THEY ARE YOUR PARENTS. But here’s the catch and the consolation: your parents also have to be obedient to someone: Holy Mother Church. And not just when they feel like it. Not just when their opinion happens to coincide with that of Hers. Not just when She provides satisfactory explanations; but always, and especially, in matters of moral and spiritual significance. Not because the Church has earned their obedience. Not because the Church is older, smarter, and wiser than them, (though all these things are certainly true) but simply because SHE IS THEIR MOTHER, and She loves them. Of course, there may come a day when your parents decide they disagree with their Mother. There may come a day when She seems more of a burden than a blessing. There will be times when She makes decisions and rules which they do not understand, or are reluctant to obey. And that is when you will have the immense satisfaction of pointing out, with all due humility and deference, that they need to show obedience, just like you do. Saint Benedict foresaw all this. So he warns the abbot that he will be held accountable by God. This can be comforting to those of us who are under someone else’s authority, but it can also be very frightening when we assume that authority ourselves. You may not find yourself wielding the sort of influence that an abbot has, but there are other positions of leadership that carry the same obligations: team captain, student representative, club president...even just being popular carries the weight of considerable responsibility because your peers look to you as a mentor and as an example. They will imitate your virtues, but they will also use your vices to excuse their own misbehavior. So beware. One way or another, you will be held accountable—and more so by the example you set than by the words you speak.

New Procedure Helps Common Health Issue Among Men

F

or men over 50, it is one of the most common health issues they face with aging – benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Those frequent bathroom breaks on car trips, or the need to go to the bathroom often in the night? That is more than likely BPH. It is estimated that as many as 500 million men in the world have BPH, with more than 50 percent of men over age 50 affected. BPH can

significantly impact quality of life with increased urinary frequency. Untreated, these problems may lead to incontinence, kidney damage, bladder damage, urinary tract infections, bladder stones or the inability to pass urine at all. “As you age, the prostate grows, which leads to more frequent bathroom visits with many men waking up to go the bathroom more often,” says Sophia Ford-Glanton, MD, SLUCare urologist at SSM

Health Saint Louis University Hospital. Aside from medications which can come with some side effects, the most common therapy used to treat BPH is a surgical procedure called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). However, that too can come with side effects like sexual dysfunction and urinary incontinence. Now, urologists at SLU Hospital are among the first in the region offering a new, minimally-invasive alternative to treating BPH with a procedure called prostatic urethral lift, that relieves pressure on the prostate without cutting or removal of the prostate gland. During the procedure, physicians use a system called UroLift to implant what is similar to a small stent into the prostate. The device lifts and holds the enlarged tissue, relieving pressure on the urethra and allowing urine to flow. The procedure was performed for the first time at SLU

Hospital on September 6 by SLUCareurologists Dr. FordGlanton and Sameer Siddiqui, MD, using the UroLift system. “It’s a quick, outpatient procedure allowing men to go home the same day with no catheter and no medications,” says Dr. Ford-Glanton. “This is a big advancement in treating BPH, as studies have shown the urethral lift offers no sexual side effects that can come with traditional therapies.” For example, research published in the April, 2014 issue of the British Journal of Urology found the prostatic urethral lift procedure “allows patients to return quickly to normal activity, provides rapid and durable improvement in symptoms, and preserves sexual function.” For more information about a prostatic urethral lift or UroLift at SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital, call 314-577-8790.

Brother Dunstan Gingerbread-Peach Upside Down Cake for the Feast of Saint Edward the Confessor

Saint Edward the Confessor was one of the last AngloSaxon kings of England. His aunt was Saint Edith of Wilton whose feast I mentioned in September. The houses of our Congregation, the English Benedictine Congregation, have a special devotion to Saint Edward because he was a great patron of Benedictine monasticism and founded the great Abbey of Westminster in London. Several houses of our congregation are able to trace their roots back to Westminster. Saint Edward was known for his love of the poor and fidelity to the Church. Since his feast day falls in October, I would like to offer one of my favorite autumnal desserts.

THE X FACTOR

Nursery Ryhmes for Bedtime? What was he thinking?

O

ctober! I love October! The leaves start changing; the air is nice, cool, and crisp for morning runs; my father turns another year older and another inch balder; and oh yeah, Halloween! October is full of haunted houses, teepeeing my aunt and uncle’s houses, scary movies, scaring trick-or-treaters, and did I mention Halloween? I remember when I was younger, my father and I would rent the latest “Goosebumps” movie or whatever horror film was out. We would sit back on the couch with some apple cider and popcorn balls, cover ourselves with blankets, and

every now and then he would scream uncontrollably scaring the heck out of me. Later, after saying our prayers, he would read stories for me from some nursery rhyme book, usually Mother Goose or the Brothers Grimm. It was not until recently when my little six-year-old cousin stayed the weekend with us did I realize that the bedtime stories were so much scarier than any of the movies that we had watched. What in the world was my father, and millions of other parents around the world, thinking in reading these stories to impressionable young kids? How could these nursery rhymes that we all

Goosey Goosey Gander (1784) Goosey goosey gander, Whither shall I wander? Upstairs and downstairs And in my lady’s chamber. There I met an old man Who wouldn’t say his prayers, So I took him by his left leg And threw him down the stairs. It’s hard to imagine that any rhyme with the phrase “goosey goosey” in its title could be described as anything but pleasant. But it actually refers to the persecution of Catholic priests by Henry VIII, who refused to “say their prayers” in the new, Anglican form. To avoid punishment for practicing their faith, priests would hide in “priest holes,” or tiny hidden chambers in the homes of sympathetic laymen. If they were found, the punishment was often death, as implied by the fate of the old man in the poem, who is “thrown down the stairs.”

sang on the playground and classroom have such dark undertones, and still exist today? After doing some research on the origins of popular nursery rhymes and stories, I am now even more sure that they were never intended for children, especially children who are about to go to asleep. Believe it or not, a lot of them were based on historical figures within the Catholic Church--some good, and some not-so-good. Here are just a few background stories on the stories we all learned as children:

Rock-a-Bye Baby (1765) Hush-a-by baby On the tree top, When the wind blows The cradle will rock. When the bough breaks, The cradle will fall, And down will fall baby Cradle and all.

One interpretation of this famous lullaby is that it is about the son of King James II of England and Mary of Modena. It is widely believed that the boy was not their son at all, but a child who was brought into the birthing room, and passed off as their own, in order to ensure a Roman Catholic heir to the throne.

Ring Around the Rosie (1881) Ring-a-round the rosie, A pocket full of posies, Ashes! Ashes! We all fall down.

This verse refers to the 1665 Great Plague of London. “The rosie” is the rash that covered the afflicted, the smell from which they attempted to cover up with “a pocket full of posies.” The plague killed nearly 15 percent of the country’s population, which makes the final verse— “Ashes! Ashes! We all fall down”—rather self-explanatory.

Old Mother Hubbard (1805)

THE X FACTOR

Little Boy Blue (1744)

Old Mother Hubbard Went to the cupboard, To give the poor dog a bone; When she came there, The cupboard was bare, And so the poor dog had none.

Little Boy Blue come blow your horn, The sheep’s in the meadow the cow’s in the corn. But where’s the boy who looks after the sheep? He’s under a haystack fast asleep. Will you wake him? No, not I - for if I do, he’s sure to cry.

This rhyme is reputedly about Cardinal Thomas Wolsey. Wolsey refused to facilitate a divorce from Queen Katherine of Aragon for King Henry VIII. The King wanted a divorce so that he could marry Anne Boleyn. The doggie and the bone in the rhyme refer to the divorce, the cupboard is a reference to the Catholic Church and Wolsey is Old Mother Hubbard. The divorce was later arranged by Thomas Cramner, and resulted in the break with Rome and the formation of the English Protestant church.

Another nursery rhyme about Cardinal Wolsey, Little Boy Blue refers to Wolsey’s arrogance. He was a wealthy self-made man and had many enemies in England. After obtaining his degree from Oxford at the age of fifteen, he was dubbed the “Boy Bachelor.” The words “come blow your horn” likely refer to his incessant bragging.

Little Jack Horner Sat in the corner, Eating a Christmas pie; He put in his thumb, And pulled out a plum, And said ‘What a good boy am I! The tale of Little Jack Horner and his Christmas Pie probably seemed a bit curious if you ever gave it a second thought. As the tale goes, a Christmas Pie was sent via courier to King Henry VIII from the Abbot of Glastonbury. There are two different theories on who the courier was, but both theories agree that the pie was laced with 12 deeds to manor houses which were to bribe the King in favor of not destroying the abbey. Thomas Horner ended up with the deed to Mells Manor. It is not clear if he was the one who stuck in his thumb and pulled out the plum of a deed, or if he somehow managed to slyly get the deed by convicting the courier, who was said to have done the same. For many generations the Horner family dwelled in Mells Manor and were said to claim that Thomas Horner purchased the deed from the King. So, whichever story you hear, there was a Christmas Pie with deeds in it, and a Mr. Horner who ended up with a deed from said pie. It’s certainly more than what most imagine when hearing the child’s poem.

Little Jack Horner (1725)

Ladybird, Ladybird (1744) Ladybird, ladybird fly away home, Your house is on fire and your children are gone, All except one, And her name is Ann, And she hid under the baking pan.

Another even more disturbing rhyme, Ladybird, Ladybird, Fly Away Home details the burning of a ladybird’s home and the death of all of her offspring, save for one — incongruously named Ann — who took refuge underneath a skillet. The nursery rhyme is believed to be based on the events leading up to the Gunpowder Plot*. The word “ladybird” is derived from the term “our Lady,” which is typically associated with Catholicism. Initially, the rhyme was assumed to have served as a warning to Catholics to attend

Protestant services, as required by the Act of Uniformity of 1558. The practice of Catholic Mass was punishable by execution, and offenders were at risk of being burned at the stake, hence the reference to the insect’s home burning. The American version of the rhyme changes the word “ladybird” to “ladybug,” possibly as a result of the word association with “Firebug,” meaning a pyromaniac. *Various facts cited from Wikipedia.

Should Catholics Celebrate Halloween? The Christian Origins of All Hallows Eve

E

very year, a debate rages among Catholics and other Christians: Is Halloween a satanic holiday or merely a secular one? Should Catholic children dress up like ghosts and goblins? Is it good for children to be scared? Lost in the debate is the history of Halloween, which, far from being a pagan religious event, is actually a Christian celebration that's almost 1,300 years old.

The Christian Origins of Halloween "Halloween" is a name that means nothing by itself.

It is a contraction of "All Hallows Eve," and it designates the vigil of All Hallows Day, more commonly known today as All Saints Day. ("Hallow," as a noun, is an old English word for saint. As a verb, it means to make something holy or to honor it as holy.) All Saints Day, November 1, is a Holy Day of Obligation, and both the feast and the vigil have been celebrated since the early eighth century, when they were instituted by Pope Gregory III in Rome. (A century later, they were extended to the Church at large by Pope Gregory IV.)

The Pagan Origins of Halloween

Despite concerns among some Catholics and other Christians in recent years about the "pagan origins" of Halloween, there really are none. The first attempts to show some connection between the vigil of All Saints and the Celtic harvest festival of Samhain came over a thousand years after All Saints Day became a universal feast, and there's no evidence whatsoever that Gregory III or Gregory IV was even aware of Samhain. In Celtic peasant culture, however, elements of the harvest festival survived, even among Christians, just as the Christmas tree owes its origins to preChristian Germanic traditions without being a pagan ritual.

Combining the Celtic and the Christian

The Celtic elements included lighting bonfires, carving turnips (and, in America,

pumpkins), and going from house to house, collecting treats, as carolers do at Christmas. But the "occult" aspects of Halloween—ghosts and demons— actually have their roots in Catholic belief. Christians believed that, at certain times of the year (Christmas is another), the veil separating earth from Purgatory, Heaven, and even Hell becomes more thin, and the souls in Purgatory (ghosts) and demons can be more readily seen. Thus the tradition of Halloween costumes owes as much, if not more, to Christian belief as to Celtic tradition.

The (First) Anti-Catholic Attack on Halloween

The current attacks on Halloween aren't the first. In post-Reformation England, All Saints Day and its vigil were suppressed, and the Celtic peasant customs associated with Halloween were outlawed. Christmas and the traditions surrounding it were similarly attacked, and the Puritan Parliament banned Christmas outright in 1647. In the Northeastern United States, Puritans outlawed the celebration of both Christmas and Halloween, which were revived largely by German Catholic (in the case of Christmas) and Irish Catholic (in

49 October 2015 CatholicFamilyOnline.com

the case of Halloween) immigrants in the 19th century.

The Commercialization of Halloween

Continued opposition to Halloween was largely an expression of anti-Catholicism (as well as anti-Irish prejudice). But by the early 20th century, Halloween, like Christmas, was becoming highly commercialized. Pre-made costumes, decorations, and special candy all became widely available, and the Christian origins of the holiday were downplayed. The rise of horror films, and especially the slasher films of the late 70's and 80's, contributed to Halloween's bad reputation, as did the claims of putative Satanists and Wiccans, who created a mythology in which Halloween had been their festival, co-opted later by Christians.

The (Second) Anti-Catholic Attack on Halloween

A new backlash against Halloween by non-Catholic Christians began in the 1980's, in part because of claims that Halloween was the "Devil's Night"; in part because of urban legends about poisons and razor blades in Halloween candy; and in part because of an explicit opposition

to Catholicism. Jack Chick, a rabidly antiCatholic fundamentalist who distributes Bible tracts in the form of small comic books, helped lead the charge. By the late 1990's, many Catholic parents, unaware of the anti-Catholic origins of the attack on Halloween, had begun to question Halloween as well. Their concerns were elevated when, in 2009, an article from a British tabloid sparked an urban legend that Pope Benedict XVI had warned Catholics against celebrating Halloween. Even though there was no truth to the claim (see Did Pope Benedict XVI Condemn Halloween? for details), alternative celebrations became popular and remain so to this day.

Alternatives to Halloween Activities

Ironically, one of the most popular Christian alternatives to celebrating Halloween is a secular "Harvest Festival," which has more in common with the Celtic Samhain than it does with the Catholic All Saints Day. There's nothing wrong with celebrating the harvest, but there's no need to strip such a celebration of connections with the Christian liturgical calendar. (It

would, for instance, be more appropriate to tie a celebration of the harvest to the fall Ember Days.) Another popular Catholic alternative is an All Saints Party, usually held on Halloween and featuring costumes (of saints rather than ghouls) and candy. At best, though, this is an attempt to Christianize an already Christian holiday.

Safety Concerns and the Fear Factor

Parents are in the best position to decide whether their children can participate safely in Halloween activities, and, in today's world, it's understandable that many choose to err on the side of caution. Scattered stories of poisoned apples and tampering with candy, which arose during the mid1980's, left a residue of fear, even though they had been thoroughly debunked by 2002. One concern that's often overblown, however, is the effect that fright might have on children. Some children, of course, are very sensitive, but most love scaring others and being scared themselves (within limits, of course). Any parent knows that the "Boo!" is usually followed by laughter, not only from the child doing the scaring,

HALLOWEEN but from the one being scared. Halloween provides a structured environment for fear.

Making Your Decision

In the end, the choice is yours to make as a parent. If you choose, as my wife and I do, to let your children participate in Halloween, simply stress the need for physical safety (including checking over their candy when they return home), and explain the Christian origins of Halloween to your children. Before you send them off trick-or-treating, recite together the Prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel, and explain that, as Catholics, we believe in the reality of evil. Tie the vigil explicitly to the Feast of All Saints, and explain to your children why we celebrate that feast, so that they won't view All Saints Day as "the boring day when we have to go to church before we can eat some more candy." Let's reclaim Halloween for Christians, by returning to its roots in the Catholic Church!

DIGITAL PARENTING

I

DIGITAL PARENTING with Janel Digital Sportsmanship… don’t post your way out of your future!

don’t know about you, but I LOVE fall sports! Seriously, what could be more fun than a fall soccer game or Friday night football game between rival schools? Tennis, softball, volleyball, swimming, cross country…the kids are back in the swing of the school year. As much as I love watching high school teams compete and the camaraderie and school spirit as classmates cheer them on, there is one thing I like even more--the thought of not having to pay “full sticker” for college. I said “thought” because this is not a reality at this point, but a girl can dream. However, for many kids, it is an absolute reality that they are being scouted

right about now for spots on college teams, with lucrative scholarships to boot. And, for many other younger talented athletes, they are working hard to compete, stand out as they grow older, and ultimately to make varsity or first string and show up on someone’s radar--someone who has the financial keys to the college they want to attend. Imagine this for a second. Your child is an athlete with aspirations of playing in college. Or not. Maybe your child plays for fun, or maybe not at all. Maybe he or she is engaged in another activity. Whatever it is, whatever their passion, it’s important to impress upon them that sportsmanship,

51 October 2015 CatholicFamilyOnline.com

or good competitive acumen, is more than high fives or slapping sweaty hands at the end of a game or meet. It’s more than a cursory “congratulations” at the end of a performance. It’s so much more than that. As a matter of fact, it’s a front and center stage position with a hot spotlight on them more intensely than it ever was for us as parents. Why, you ask? As parents today, we did not have our own personal public media station in elementary, middle and high school. The closest we came to that was getting caught passing a note in class by the “mean” teacher who forced you to read it out loud if you got busted. Or, the

rumor mill, he-said-she-said, or the typical “smack talk” before a rival ball game. All of it was untraceable as we grew into young adults applying for scholarships to colleges, or for jobs. Not so today. There are lots of stories about students tweeting or posting their way out of scholarships and college opportunities. One such example is a story that ran in the Democrat & Chronicle last year, September 2014, entitled, “One Bad Tweet Can Be Costly to a Student Athlete.” The article begins, “Three years ago, Scott Fitch couldn’t believe what he was hearing. A college coach recruiting two of his Fairport High School boys basketball players called to say how much he liked what he saw after watching them play an AAU game, and that he thought both were good enough to see court time on his team as freshmen. “But we’re going to stop recruiting one of them,” the college coach said. Stunned, Fitch asked why. “We found his Twitter account, looked through it, and some of what we saw isn’t representative of what our university is about,” the recruiter explained.”

3. There are certain things that are productive to post on public social media. Public social media can be your friend. It can help you differentiate yourself. Or, it can ruin your chances for scholarships, college, and even a job. I do not want you living in my basement when you are 40, so pay attention! 4. Post what you are proud of or passionate about, as well as what inspires you. Post to build others up or promote a good cause or achievement. Don’t forget that “sharing” and “re-tweeting” are the same as posting in the social media profile world. 5. Value your privacy. Don’t sell yourself out for a few “likes” or “retweets.” You may regret it deeply. At the same time, I get that you need to share photos between you and your friends, but they don’t all need to be made public. Same for photos or conversations with other people in your life--family, teammates, etc. Use a private form of social media for photos, conversations, and events you don’t want on your mainstream public broadcast on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. Frienedy is a great platform to share selectively and privately in groups. Download the app and use it.

Wow! It’s a simple message, really, but we shouldn’t rely on coaches to deliver it. If they do, that’s a bonus, as it won’t hurt the kids to hear it from more than one source. But, as a parent, I believe it’s on me. Here are some of the things I tell my kids, as well as the groups of kids I have the opportunity to speak to: 1. There is a human behind the avatar.

Here’s the thing. If I would have had access to that same social media when I was the age my kids are now, I would have been just as tempted to seek followers and likes and retweets. But, I didn’t. I had a typewriter that didn’t cause my parents quite the same concern. So, let’s make sure that we extend the conversation beyond the high fives and hand shakes after the game. And, let’s make sure that none of our kids lose the opportunities they work so hard to earn!

2. People are watching to see how you treat humans behind the avatars.
