BATHSPACE: URBAN LIVING ROOM Foreign Program, Identity Crisis
Dinkytown Neighborhood / Marcy Holmes MPLS. MN Studio 3: Programming + Typologies Professor Andrew Blaisdell
Concept: A bath space in Dinkytown attempts to provide a non-commercial indoor civic center for the neighborhood, engaging Minneapolis' unique urban trend of iconic indoor public spaces due to the nature of harsh climate throughout the year. The site calls for the building to engage these different perspectives which becomes the basis for the parti and formal exploration of the design. The intervention creates an urban living room by first: bringing the street into the building, its forms, activities, program, and flexibility, by way of allowing people to circulate through the open front
space. This becomes the way the bath spaces are circulated through. Second, the building allows for an understanding of the individual zone in the urban environment while understanding the collective idea of being a part of the community, this is accomplished by a series of atriums that cut into the mass of the building creating a mix of public, private, and semi-public zones. The building also presents a play on duration, with a series of zones that allow for the building to engage the city at different times.
