Gente It was back in 2012 when I was irst introduced to the local San Diego Jazz scene. I did not know what to expect, especially since the irst jam session I attended was in Barrio Logan. It was at the end of the show when my professor at the time asked what I though of the show. He then told me, Bill Caballero and the jazz musicians are GENTE! I knew gente meant people in spanish but was not sure what he meant. In addition, I did not know what to think of this amazing jam session. The beauty in the diferent ethnic background as well as the open arms of the community to the music and the patrons was amazing. It was then Patricio explained Gente to me. They are for the people and for the music, it is bigger then them. Community and well being, passion in the music, and respect for each note played. In addition to the jazz jam session in Barrio Logan, there were a few others around town, in which I met many more talented musicians. Seven Grand, latin and straight ahead jazz fronted by Trumpetor Gilbert Castellanos. An amazing arrangement of music from the house band as well as guest who would set in through out the night. Cafe La Maze, one of my favorite spots to enjoy jazz at. Trumpetor Burnett Anderson headed this jam, and it was full of great vibes and people. Cafe La Maze has that locals vibe, it is a hidden gem with in National City. After going to these jams, I started to realize how much it is about the people: Gente. The richness in knowledge and stories that I took away from these jam sessions are priceless. I thank all the musicians and hope for many years to come of great Jazz music. Down Beat Begins...
