With my work placement I was determined to work with one studio in particular; Simulacra Studios. Simulacra have a style to its work, which I myself aspire to. The work of both Chris Charalambous and Francois Boutemy is a concoction of style, art and fashion, but with a liberating sense of individualism. Joanna Castle and myself were taken on a team, where we shared certain duties and tasks. In our dealings with both Chris and Francois we were dealt with as equals who had something important to bring to Simulacra; our opinions. Our initial task was to research other similar studios pricing structure, and then the four of us had a brain storming session where we hammered out a collection of definitive pricing packages with which the studio then uploaded to the website. Once this had been taken care of we moved onto how we could expand the studios current client base. It was decided the best way in which we could do this would be to organize for models and actors to avail of a reduced price package on a chosen day in which a group could come in and have actors head shots and model Z cards shot. Our task was to get the word out about the studio and this promotion. I set up a Facebook group page and an event for when we planned to have our first official shoot. We then proceeded to email and telephone various stage schools and model agencies so as to spread the word and perhaps sign interested parties up to the promotion. Finding potential clients did prove to be a difficult task, perhaps due to the current recessional difficulties or perhaps simply down to bad luck. The studio then decided it wanted to hold a practice shoot so as we could get some promotional images together and also so as to fine-tune any unforeseeable details. Both Joanna and myself managed to bring in an actor each for the shoot and then assisted on the day of the actual shoot. This for me was the highlight of the work placement. I really enjoyed all elements of it, the settings up of the lights, the witnessing of how different models act and the relationship between the photographer and his subject, and then seeing the final images. It was a really insightful and exciting day. Unfortunately it was eventually decided to post phone the actual promotion for the time being as it proved too difficult for both Joanna and myself and the studio to find paying clients. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Simulacra Studios and found both Francois and Chris to be really amazing to work with, both from a creative perspective and from a work ethic one too. I am also pleased to say that they have requested for me to continue working with them as a paid member of the Simulacra team, which I am only too delighted to accept.
