The Venetian Fortezza fortress can be found at the west side of the city, close to the new harbour. Being on the west makes it an ideal spot to watch the sunset. It was built on Paleokastro hill by the Venetians to protect the city of Rethymnon from the Turks. The tourist resort of Plakias offers a beautiful sandy beach, while nearby lies the magnificent Kotsyfos Gorge. Some of the other popular beaches in are Adelianos kampos (a long, sandy beach next to Adele village, 6 km east of Rethymno) and Mpali (also known as Bali, 33 km east of Rethymno).The famous Monastery Arkadi (Moni Arkadiou) lies 20km east.
