LISTENER//PERFORMER

I

University of Central Florida | Spring 2018| Design VIII Professor: Joel Setzer

The relationship between a listener and performer is one that many people do not truly understand. Performance of any kind is an art in itself. Artists are tasked with performing a composi-

tion of music they have put thousands of hours of practice into. The listener may only ever listen to that piece of music once in their life time. Therefore, the listener experiences the performance and the performer experiences the process.

“Music is the art of time. Architecture is the art of space. - Unknown

The process of composing and performing is one that can be translated over into many different mediums. When musical notation, as a whole, is broken down into its sub structures, you can then start

to assign architectural language and meaning. Therefore, allowing the architecture to become more than inhabitable space. It transforms the user experience into a euphoric memory that evolves as time moves forward. This project explores the relationship between the listener, the performer and the journey they create.

OAKLAND TOWER

18| RHWIV | PORTFOLIO 2019

University of Central Florida | Fall 2017 | Design VII Professor: Donald Watters

The goal for this project was to develop a new high rise struc-

ture which would hold public and private spaces. This includes office space, residential units, a community center, a black box theatre and a rooftop terrace. The intervention is located on the periphery of where the developed and undeveloped infrastructure in downtown Oakland converge. The existing structure is surrounded by commercial, public and private space, and 3 seperate parking lots directly adjacent.

The layout of the city streets and lots are porus compared to

its neighboring city of San Francisco just right across the bay. Even looking a couple of blocks north of our site, the density was very different.

The objective was to bring the feeling of progression back to

the city of Oakland. Using the void spaces as a motivating factor, we wanted to reverse the negative effect of these “city killers and give the public three new spaces. They would be placed in between our programmatic elements and serve as connection/interaction points. The placement on the site was extremely important in our decision making process.

WETLAND REVITALIZATION

III

University of Central Florida | Fall 2015 | Design V Professor: Jeet Singh

The concept of revitalization evolved from research of the existing

dam and wetlands at Jay Blanchard Park. These wetlands, which make up a majority of the landscape, act as natural filters for the environment. The dam on the site has reduced the natural flooding needed to fill up the wetlands. This has caused damage to the riverside ecosystems and also caused the site to dry up and not fulfill its purpose. The main goal of this project was to bring back activity to the site as well as revitalize the wetlands without touching or damaging them further. The program was to build a kayak pavillion, bait shop, and work/living space for a canoe craftsman.

Wetlands- Relied on natural flooding of the river now prevented by dam.

Standing Water- Dam interupts natural flow of water which creates standing water habitats for non- native and invasive species that carry disease. Sediments- Dam blocks sediments from being dispersed down stream to other Riparian Zones. Starts to build up.

Riparian Zones- Streamside ecosystem affect by the dam disrupting the natural flow of the river.

ESSENCE OF PLACE

IV

University of Central Florida | Fall 2014 | Design IV Professor: Stephen Szutenbach

When intervening in the landscape, you must take into consideration

the surrounding context. The intervention must seamlessly intergrate into the site and complement the already existing. The goal for this project was to design a monastary located adjacent to Fort Pulaski.

Fort Pulaski to the people of Savannah during the 1800’s was more

than just a military fort, It was a sign of protection, security and freedom. The fort was built to defend some of the most important assets of that area, mainly being the Port of Savannah.

REPAIR + MENDING

V

University of Central Florida | Spring 2016 | Design VI Professor: Kourtney Baldwin

Deconstruct/Reconstruct:

The framework of the bike was deconstructed and reconstructed creating a new geometric form. This new form was arrayd

along an axis creating a spine to hold the pgoram. Embedding the program into the array allows for a porous and tectonic contrast of space joining the pre-existing building fabric of the UCF Chemistry Building. The elevation of the program allows the separation of traffic between pedestrians and bikes, creating two distinct spaces for repairing bikes and maintaining a constant flow of pedestrian traffic. The Program beings inside the array, breaking down the flow of the biker’s experience through the twisting of the array. The twisting represents the physical act of repairing. Inhabiting the pre-existing edge condition of the Chemistry Building allows for the program to utilize the stagnant space of the buildings facade. The flow of traffic on the spine is arranged to allow the biker to interact with the programmatic elements while remaining on the bike. The elevated array allows for a rest area underneat the space to exist creating a new place for pause.
