ROBIN CALS RESUMÉ & PORTFOLIO 2017
Robin Cals
This portfolio is a selection of my academic and professional work from the past three years, which in my opinion conveys the range of skills and knowledge I have built up during these years. The last pages consist of a project I worked on during my internship at TenW Architecten. Each project contains a selection of relevant drawings and photographs, supported by a brief description. projects Centro cultural de Paseo
Centro cultural de Paseo, Havana Graduation project, September 2016 - July 2017
Havana has been largely frozen in time in the wake of the 1959 Revolution. Although the situation in Havana is beginning to change, with the recent boom in tourism and tourism-related growth, what new construction has occurred over the past 40 years has largely borne the drab architectural stamp of the former Soviet Union and its central state planning. With the new touristic boom, a growing gap between the local residents and the global tourists occured. This division is clearly visible at the case site of my project. An urban block of 100 x 100 meters is half occupied by a big shopping mall (global) and half by the small-scale housing of the locals. The Centro cultural de Paseo is located right in between these two worlds and functions as a common ground for both user groups. A wide range of different programs creates a 24H occupation and a lively place to interact. In the floorplans it’s clearly visible how the new blends with the existing. By extending the volumes beyond the borders of the central strip, the centre becomes more accesible for all users. The public outdoor space functions as a continuous circulation space, on all levels. projects Schutterskwartier
Social housing Schutterskwartier TU Delft: MSc2 studio, Januari 2016
The Schutterskwartier in Rotterdam was the only neighbourhood that escaped the plans to demolish old Crooswijk, to make space for New Crooswijk. Her strong identity within the larger urban scale presents itself as an ‘Ubran Enclave’. Higher appartments on the outside of the block hide and protect the intimacy of the inner courtyards. The assignment was to densify the block with 130%.The highrise on the northside of the plot accomodates this rise in number of dwellers. The livingconditions are improved by creating a parking garage which is directly connected to the groundbound dwellings. A combination of small-scale public functions then ensures that residents never have to go far for their daily needs. This enhances the enclave feeling. Main program Housing Location Crooswijk, Rotterdam Area ±12.000 m² Software used Revit, illustrator Mentors Paul Kuitenbrouwer Hubert van der Meel Urban strategy in cooperation with Tuomas Martinsaari Edyta Milczarek Lilian Tran Antonino Zappulla 17

projects Soda Fabriek
RE-USE: Soda Fabriek, Schiedam TU Delft: MSc1 studio, July 2015
Two neglected warehouses in the city of Schiedam form the envelop for a redevelopment project. The former factory was in severe decay and needed a flexible program to occupy the 5-storey building. To make the old part more visible, the later built entrance building will be demolished and replaced with a waterside terrace. Inside the building, the ground floor is mostly used as hospitaly for both the surrounding dwellers and the office workers on the upper floors. The old warehouses are separated by a covered alley that forms part of the circulation space. A central core runs through this alley, to access the offices.

This section shows the sequence of spaces an indivual passes before entering the building. Starting from the parking lot on the left, each area has a specific feel and set of possible activities.
After entering the former warehouse, the offices on the upperfloors are accesible. The workplaces have an industrial appearance and are connected by means of the covered alley between the warehouses.

During my internship at TenW Architecten in The Hague, I worked on several utility projects like a new city plan office for ABN AMRO. The transformation of an existing office building contained the creation of a big atrium. Thanks to the structural engineering adaptation, the building has been well-preserved, which resulted in Breeam Excellent.
30
internship TenW Architecten
The major adaptation, the entrance area, gives the building the recognizability and identity of the ABN AMRO bank. A cut has been made over two floors, making the interior and its varied activities visible. The addition of the curved glass facade increases the accessibility of the building.
