Sir Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 film The Birds - from which this exhibition takes its title - is a film at once absurd and unsettling. It used birds, such familiar yet also oddly alien creatures, to evoke terror so successfully that some people have developed a lifelong fear of birds because if it. In my exhibition The Birds, I have not sought to evoke such outright terror, but instead to examine the intersection between the beautiful and exotic and the uncanny and sinister that I feel birds in some way embody. Sitting, striding, flying, displaying and mating whilst casting haunting shadows on their individual stages, the birds of my paintings range from common and mundane species like Noisy Miner, to the exotic and operatic Frigate Bird and long-dead distant relatives like the dinosaur Deinonychus. Together, they make a diverse flock, a collection of avian beauty, strangeness, ugliness and ferocity. Zoe Tweedale, 2015
