Stay Inspired June and July use to mean fun, food, friends and family. As a child, I looked forward to packing the cooler with sandwiches, mom's chilled potato salad, containers of iced sweet tea and heading to the beach. As I grew into my teens, summer meant hanging out with my friends and dancing to the latest tunes. As my adult years arrived, summer meant planning an amazing getaway for a memorable adventure somewhere I've never been before. June and July 2020 will also become memorable, but for all the wrong reasons. Due to COVID-19 Pandemic, trains, planes and automobiles are all suspects in spreading a persistent virus.

If you are like many of us, June and July 2020 will be a summer of reflection, creativity, and WALK DAILY, mindfulness. I have chosen to do yoga, walk daily, and count my blessings. CORONAVIRUS: COVID-19 THE NEWEST STRAIN OF CORONAVIRUS BY JOCELYN JOHNSON, MSN & MS

The only thing on most of our minds is the impending threat of a new virus, Covid-19 (SARS-Co2, the novel coronavirus that causes coronavirus disease 2019) (1). You're probably wondering who is at risk or if you'll contract the virus. Background The entire world has been affected by Covid-19, from China to Africa, Europe to the Americas is reeling from the numbers of confirmed cases of Covid19 (2). Researchers discovered four types of coronavirus in the 1960s, with four sub-groups alpha, beta, gamma, and delta. Two forms of coronavirus recently of concern recently are the MERS-CoV (Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome), and SARS-CoV (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), both of which are betacoronaviruses (1). The question on the tip of everyone's tongue is, "what can I take to make sure that I don't get this virus"? Although researchers are working diligently to develop a vaccine to help improve immunity to this specific virus, there is no cure.

The truth about viruses: Viruses need a living host to reproduce. You see, viruses lack mitochondria (organelles necessary for cellular respiration) and energy production in the cell. These microbes cannot produce ATP (adenosine triphosphate); this is the preferred energy source needed for the majority of cells in the body. Viruses use the DNA of the host to replicate themselves by injecting their DNA or RNA that is then replicated by the host cell (3). Once infected with a virus, it's hard for the body's defenses to fight. So, you don't die from contracting the virus, the common denominator with many viruses is they cause other infections such as pneumonia and other acute respiratory infections. A few things we can do to reduce our chances of contracting the Covid-19 virus: According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), simple hand washing with soap and warm for at least 20 seconds (4) (try singing the "Happy Birthday" song twice, that will take you about 20 seconds).

Avoid rubbing your face and eyes with unwashed hands (4). If you are not able to wash your hands with soap, use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol (4). Limit your exposure to large crowds, and stay about 6 feet away from others, especially if they are coughing or sneezing (4). These simple steps seem like common sense because they are! Help Your Body Fight In addition to social distancing, hand washing, and touching your face and eyes, there are a few other things that you can do to improve your immune system. Eat a whole foods diet, making sure to consume a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. Limit your prepackaged food and fast food intake. We are all so busy, never having time to make meals. Now that many people are quarantined to our homes, this means there is time to prepare healthful meals.

My favorite “go-to� for new recipes are All recipes, Epicurious, and Yummly I always find new ways to prepare vegetables that I'm not familiar with, such as artichokes. I think of the outer leaves as being tough and sharp, but the inner heart of this thistle is tender and delicious.You see, Artichokes are rich in inulin an oligosaccharide (sugar molecule) that is the preferred energy source for the cells of the large intestine. Your Gastrointestinal System The large intestine houses our microbiome, which consists of good bacterial, as well as pathogenic species that can cause diseases when they are out of balance. By supporting your overall microbiome, you can reduce the chances of bacterial overgrowth in the gut. By improving your overall health, you can improve your immune system.

During this time, make sure to pay attention to social-distancing, practice self-care by going for a walk, riding your bike, or participate in a guided yoga class or meditation session on your smart-phone, tablet or computer. THE PEARL PROJECT INSTITUTE FOR INNOVATION IN STEM LITERACY, is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization designed to create a direct pipeline of STEM literate youth ready for the global workforce. Why So Few? According to the World Economic Forum, as societies become wealthier and more gender equal, women are less likely to obtain degrees in STEM, according to new research. The researchers call this a “genderequality paradox.” The under representation of girls and women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields occurs globally. Although women are currently well represented in life sciences, they continue to be underrepresented in inorganic sciences, such as computer science and physics. We Need Her! As the U.S. has transformed rapidly to an information-based economy, employment in science, technology,engineering and math occupations has grown – outpacing overall job growth. Since 1990, STEM employment has grown 79% (9.7 million to 17.3 million) and computer jobs have seen a whopping 338% increase over the same period. Toni explains that when 1 in 5 men are employed in a digital economy, 5 traditional jobs go away. For every single job created in a digital economy, 20 jobs for women are eliminated due to digital transformation.

Cassie Kloberdanz Lee is the Advanced Programs Lead for Weather and Remote Sensing at Lockheed Martin Space. In this role, she leads the design of systems that use the vantage of space to understand our changing planet. According to experts in the field, there is a major benefit provided by space borne Earth‐atmosphere remote sensing because it provides invaluable measurements of atmospheric parameters at regular intervals on a global scale. As a result, climatic and solar data can be monitored in real time minimizing catastrophic global disasters.

Allen’s (early technologist and the co-founder of Microsoft) philanthropic initiatives. Question: Brooke continues to be a role model for women in aerospace, who were your role models, and do you continue to have a role model? "Brooke and I were close friends and she continues to be a guiding force in my life. One great role model, whom the industry also lost too soon,was Patti Grace Smith. Patti was the first Associate Administrator of the FAA's Office of Commercial Space Transportation and a mentor to so many of us, including Brooke. She was a brilliant, powerful leader, but also a kind and generous human."

Question: You are well known for your outreach and advocacy for women in STEM, especially in aerospace. What would you "Tell-A-Girl" about why she should consider STEM education, especially in Aerospace?

"I want to tell all girls that there is a role in aerospace for you. In the real world, STEM organizations do not run on engineering alone. We need your unique gifts. I would "Tell-AGirl" that you belong at any table where you want to belong. Pursue whatever path to excellence makes you happy. And, no matter your age or where you are in your journey, always give back to those in need. That is what truly makes a "Brookie"!

"Surrounded by thousands of stars, complete silence, and a cold breeze, I stood on top of the bunker in Mojave Desert at 2:00 am, awestruck by nature’s beauty steeped in darkness. As the team worked endlessly in preparation for the morning’s rocket launch, I was completely hypnotized by the isolation of the night. I then realized that I wanted to dedicate my life to understanding the mysteries of our Universe." Meet Diana Alsindy. In 2003, the Iraq war started and her family managed to survive by fleeing to the United States in 2008. Promise and potential were on the horizon. The following years would offer her the opportunity to forge a career as a rocket scientist. Her goal would be fraught with challenges and obstacles which included language and cultural barriers. To ensure her place in the world of space exploration, Diana obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering.

Education Opens Doors After graduating from University of California,San Diego in 2017,Diana was offered the opportunity to become lead of the Propulsion Team in The Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (SEDS) an international student organization whose purpose is to promote space exploration and development through educational and engineering projects. Diana was tasked with researching propulsion thrusters,which are devices that propel and accelerate spacecraft and artificial satellites. The team was on a mission to lower the time and cost of making engine parts for space travel.

Cosmic Dreams within Reach! Today, Diana can be found preparing the LauncherOne rocket for commercial space travel at Virgin Orbit as their Propulsion Development Engineer. Virgn Orbit has designed a next generation rocket system committed to commercial space. Virgin Orbit's leader, Sir Richard Branson is on a mission to open space travel for everyone. As a result, his company developed a reusable flying launchpad system called Cosmic Girl which features LauncherOne. LauncherOne is a 70-foot long rocket made of extremely strong carbon-fiber, a low weight material to ensure high fuel efficiency. LauncherOne rocket is deployed by being dropped from the wing of a special Boeing 747 from 35,000 feet.

LauncherOne then ignites and goes off into space putting satellites the size of washing machines into orbit around Earth.

"Social media is a powerful tool and it can be used to influence and make a change "through The Arabian Stargazer." Since science, communication is a great way to teach science in a fun and unique way, I use the internet to virtually teach science to parts of the world that might not have access to the same technology. I hold online presentations and sessions with middle school children and talk about space exploration. I explain concepts by pointing at physical solar system models that I have to create a visual."

What would you suggest as a logical first step to pursuing a career in aerospace? "Start by being engaged in hands-on projects such as rocket clubs, robotic competitions and technical organization. The easiest way to be connected to the industry professionals is through organizations who are already established."

"Leading a team did not only teach me how to work with other engineers, but it also gave me a different perspective of managing a high visibility project with a large organization such as SEDS and NASA. Being an Engineering student and an Engineer is very different, as responsibilities and outlook to projects is different. When you are a student dealing with industry professionals, you get a glimpse of what it is to really be an engineer. Answers to your questions can be answered in a completely different way if it is answered directly by an experienced engineer."

As a creative, I am constantly seeking out inspiration to bring new ideas and perspectives to bear. I used to derive inspiration from museums, books, magazines, movies and travelling: ways I could wrap my mind around different perspectives and new takes on culture. It was an expensive and time-consuming necessity for my work (though quite fun). But today, culture and creativity come to me. I open Pinterest and Instagram and am instantly surrounded by the world’s most Avant Garde artists and “imaginators”. With a few simple keystrokes, I can access new talent, designs and perspectives that influence and inspire.

Technology as inspiration is also evident in how it’s changing us. Social media connects billions. New business models built on tech platforms are changing our culture. Technology is solving problems in ways we couldn’t imagine even 3 years ago. It is instant feedback, instant access, and new ideas: technology is the propelling force for disruption and change, birthing innovation and creative problem solving. That galvanizing force is a powerful muse for me as I mix my talents and technology to creatively help businesses solve their problems. Finally, technology is making all of us more creative. We humans are a creative species, and all of us create.

Consider this forum: coders, engineers, scientists, developers, founders, leaders, mothers. We might have different means to express our creativity, but we are all creators, in our own unique ways moving society forward. We are constantly disrupting our environment and bringing new perspectives and experiences to bear. Never have we had so little friction between creative ideas and actualization. Consider creative expression. It used to be you had to work with the tactile to make art-photography, pottery, painting, sculpture, and so on. Today we can create art with 3D printing, robots, lasers, or other means. The more tools you have in your toolkit, the greater the opportunity for creative expression. Whether you are the artist or the canvas maker, technology isn’t stifling creativity; it’s making us more creative.

Recently, I had an opportunity to chat with a Young Emerging Professional. To say Makiah Eustice is out of this world is an understatement. Makiah is a rising leader in aviation, space, and defense. She thrives on tackling global challenges in space and on the ground. An exceptional emerging professional, she has accumulated a breadth of experiences in engineering, expeditionary in engineering science, space policy, military discipline, outreach and human factors. Future Explorer With a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from Texas A&M University and graduate Space Studies Program at the International Space University, Makiah has set her sights to live and work on Mars. You might ask, how does one prepare for this extraterrestrial goal? The answer is by completing three space analog missions with a Mars Desert Research Crew 200 as Greenhouse officer in 2018. The Mars Desert Research Station in the Utah desert was established by the Mars Society in 2001 to better educate researchers, students and the general public about how humans can survive on the Red Planet.

As a commissioned officer in the US Air Force since 2019, Makiah works in the development engineering field while pursuing in-flight engineering and human performance specialty.

As a Brooke Owens Fellow, Makiah worked as a Systems Engineering intern at the Aerospace Corporation. She analyzed requirement management tools to restore and archive capability. She developed system requirements and collaborated with software developers to build a customer support tool for managers. In addition, she created a repository for industry CubeSat parts for cost model analysis.

Space is ours for the taking, for all humans to shape and influence for the benefit of ALL. We use space to test lifesaving medicine, communicate across our oceans, and to monitor our planet's health. Engineers, researchers, artists, doctors, soldiers, and entrepreneurs all have a role to play in making space a place to benefit earth and its inhabitants.

Who influenced your decision to become interested in aerospace? Who were your role models? Before I attended Texas A& M, I stumbled into the space bug by mistake. I did not know anyone to say to me, “be an engineer or go into the aerospace industry”. I was lucky enough to have my cousin grab me to share her insights regarding how to select or choose career options. It began with simple guidance on how to weight my options. She did not recommend leaving these types of decision to chance. My cousin guided me to programmatic exposure and provided access because “You don’t know what you don’t know”. She really encouraged me with saying, “you belong here.” As a result, I started to get interest during my junior year. I began reading about SpaceX, Virgin Galactic and other private space driven activities in the news and it sounded like humanity was leveraging space exploration to change humanity for good and I wanted to be part of this

KATHERINE JOHNSON NASA Mathematician

Space Exploration By the Numbers A pioneer, STEM advocate, and advanced aerospace mathematician is the only way to explain the level of tenacity Katherine Johnson demonstrated during 1960's. She was an American mathematician whose calculations of orbital mechanics launched U.S. space achievements. While employed by NASA in the 1960's, Katherine Johnson earned a reputation for mastering complex manual calculations and helped pioneer the use of computers to perform the same tasks. As the first AfricanAmerican women to work as a NASA scientist, Ms. Johnson's work included, trajectories, calculating launch windows,and emergency return paths for astronauts like John Glenn and Alan P. Shepard of the Project Mercury space flights.

In 2015, President Barack Obama recognized Ms. Johnson's achievements with the Presidential Medal of Freedom the Nation’s highest civilian honor, presented to individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors. Many other awards and recognition's followed, but the most memorable honor was the film adaptation of the book Hidden Figures, The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Who Helped Win the Space Race written by Margot Lee Shetterly. Ms. Shetterly had first hand knowledge of the contribution of women at NASA during the 1960's because her fathers was also worked as a research scientist at NASA's Langley Research Center. The Art of Engineering

According to Webster’s dictionary, art is defined as “skill acquired by experience, study, or observation” and creativity is defined as “the ability to create”. These two components are a part of the foundation of innovation and technology.One cannot innovate without creativity, and art supplies the tools for creative ideas to transform into the technologies we see and use today. As a software engineer, I had to rely on my creative skills to design and develop web applications from simply the thoughts or needs of a client.

Engineering requires taking various skills, components, and tools and putting them together to create something that meets the needs and wants required. When you come across an aesthetically pleasing, easy-to-use, graphical user interface (GUI) on a web site such as Google,Facebook, or your favorite online magazine or blog site, that is a result of artistic creativity.

A software engineer, developer, or architect had to create a product using their artistic skill based upon a vision and/or an idea. This is where artistic expression and technical innovation go hand in hand. We have seen artistic creativity in technical innovation all around us for many years. It’s in the sleek design of modern cars, down to the transition from mechanical to electrical operations.

It’s in the Internet of Things (IoT) and it’s gadgets that do creative things such as a refrigerator that tells you when you are out of an item, to smart watches that track your sleeping patterns. It’s in the evolution of the mobile phone! Who would have ever thought that the most lucrative businesses would be those that allowed consumers to make transactions from the palm of their hands? Less than 15 years ago, social media was nothing more than a few fun websites, and now, it’s a multibillion dollar industry. The ability to create the unimaginable in the tech industry, whether in business strategies, application design, or brand new gadgets, takes innovation, creativity, and especially artistic expression. I particularly enjoy spotting the artistic and creative ideas that emerge at tech expos such as the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas ( it is too early to know if CES will proceed in January of 2021.)

This is where everyone who is anyone in tech come to showcase their latest and greatest products, even if they are just concepts. My favorite is the concept cars that are displayed by popular automobile manufacturers such as Audi, BMW, and Mercedes Benz, to name a few. The sleek designs, and modern technical features ooze artistic expression and creativity. These concept cars represent the amalgam of art and tech for me. While viewing the showcases, I am satisfied in my artistic creative design mind, yet also have the ability to geek-out at the innovation in tech. One could even argue that without artistic expression, innovation in tech would not be as appealing, popular, and valuable as it is today. Hummus

Hummus-Yum! Hummus one of my favorite spreads that enjoy with cut vegetable spears like red, yellow or orange bell peppers, broccoli, carrots, and grape tomatoes. Hummus can be used as a spread for veggie stack sandwiches, or as a condiment with slowbraised chicken thighs with cooling cucumber mint yogurt sauce and grilled tomatoes. YUM!

The first documented recipe of hummus was recorded in a cookbook from Cairo in the 13th century. It contained two ingredients vinegar and pureĂŠd chickpeas. However, there was another recipe circulating JOCELYN JOHNSON throughout Syria during the same time frame with a slightly different ingredient list of pureĂŠd chickpeas and lemon juice. The latter method is most likely where the modern-day recipes are derived from. The hummus that we enjoy today has a few additional ingredients, including garlic,lemon juice, tahini (sesame seed paste), olive oil, and salt.

Create Your Own

Chickpeas, also known as garbanzo beans, are rich in protein, and insoluble fiber as well as vitamins and minerals such as folate, manganese, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, zinc and copper. This nutrient-dense legume is soaked overnight in water to soften. The next day the chickpeas are cooked in water for a couple of hours on low, then drained and blended in a blender or food processor with lots of garlic, tahini, lemon juice, olive oil and plenty of salt to taste. Some may say that the only way to make hummus is to go traditional with chickpeas. But one of my favorite hummus recipes uses white cannellini beans instead of chickpeas, with all the other ingredients, and flavored with fresh rosemary.
