Spring…that delightful season of hope and renewal. A time to open windows that have been battened against winter’s cold and let the first waves of fresh air invade our homes after months of central heating and indoor living. Also a time to undertake spring cleaning and consider the maintenance needs of what, for most of us, is our largest investment. Spring in the Maritimes traditionally arrives with a degree of reluctance and that’s how many of us approach home maintenance, if we think of it at all. Whether it’s fear of perceived complexities or a simple matter of ‘out of sight, out of mind’, human nature seems to be to ignore basic home maintenance until something goes wrong and we’re faced with a crisis, often involving large amounts of water in places we’d rather it wasn’t or systems that suddenly and mysteriously refuse to function. However, with a simple schedule and a little time, crises can be averted along with the extravagant costs they tend to incur. Think of it as a pre-emptive strike. The parameters of home maintenance are mostly determined by the upcoming season so, generally speaking, we have differing schedules for spring and fall. Bearing that in mind, winter in Nova Scotia is a time to hunker down (or, for some, head down .. south that is) and
not for repairing roofs or caulking windows .. think of it as the homo sapiens version of hibernation. I might spend part of a winter’s day wandering through my house, screwdriver in hand, checking drawer pulls and handles, hinges and faceplates for looseness or lubrication requirements or faucets that need attention. It seems appropriate here to admit that I’m given to a certain obsessive/ compulsive behaviour in this regard. But if it happens that you arrive at consciousness as if waking from a dream, standing in the hallway, while the sound of windblown snow howls about your home’s outer walls, the new multi bit screwdriver your loving spouse gave you for Christmas gripped between your fingers and no recollection of how you arrived there, you might consider seizing the moment. Tighten that loose screw on the bathroom door handle that’s been nagging unsuccessfully for your attention. Or, check the gasket on the refrigerator door. If you can close the fridge door on a $5 bill and it pulls out easily, the door, or its hinges needs adjusting or the seal may have to be replaced, a procedure that will extend the life of your refrigerator compressor while reducing the size of your electrical bill. As long as you’re there take the opportunity to slide the appliance forward and vacuum the dust from the compressor coil. Your refrigerator will love you for it. You’re un-
doubtedly really in the mood now so wander around the place with an eye for loose handrails or buckled flooring. This stuff is small potatoes, takes little time or thought and offers good payback. Best of all it frees mind and conscience, allowing one to return to gentler pursuits .. feeding the woodstove or that terrific novel you can’t seem to get enough of .. while justifying your existence in the eyes of aforementioned spouse. I have come to the conclusion, however, that there is but one season for home maintenance in the Maritimes and it lasts from spring until fall. As soon as weather permits I like to know how my home has fared through what are among the harshest and radically changeable winter conditions in North America. The bulk of our homes’ maintenance requirements are not rocket science. They fall under the heading of ‘inspections’ and are mostly, along with their fixes, well within the capabilities of anyone with the will to explore and a mild sense of adventure. In next month’s newsletter I will lay out what I figure is a basic home maintenance checklist. Completion of this simple checklist will enable you to devise a plan to address your home’s needs over the glorious weeks of our Maritime summer and fall. Spreading things out over several months lends an appealing sense of leisure to the whole affair, giving credence to the belief that ‘perception is reality’ and, on a more pragmatic level, allows time to book any necessary tradespeople.
