Hamburger The longest fair throughout Germany which attracts approximately nine million visitors annually.

T

he night sky in Hamburg gets a lot brighter in the month leading up to Christmas. This is when the Hamburger Dom, a huge outdoor fair, takes place. Dating back to the 14th century, the fair began when the former Marien-Dom (St. Mary’s Minister; dom refers to a large church or cathedral) offered refuge from the cold weather to traders and craftsmen as they traveled around selling their wares. Even though the Dom building was demolished in 1804, the local government allowed the trades people to continue to have their market in the nearby Heiligengeistfeld (the field of the Holy Spirit). Today, the Hamburger Dom heralds the start of the Christmas season, drawing millions of visitors to the area, with three kilometers of craft-filled booths, rides, musicians, performers, and clowns. The centerpiece of the Hamburger DOM is the huge, colorfully lit Ferris wheel which adds a classic, old-world romance to the event while providing an enchanting way to see the beautiful city of Hamburg.

Lighthouse-style Home

5 acres of breathtaking Ocean Frontage along Nova Scotia’s Eastern Shore

I

magine, living in your own modern-day lighthouse, spending lazy days gazing out at the ever-changing sea. This unique, lighthouse inspired, architecturally designed and structurally engineered home is available now at Triford Cove. Located just 17 km from the historic and charming Sherbrooke Village (pop ca. 400), on Nova Scotia’s bold and rugged Eastern Shore, this exceptional ca. 3,175 sq. ft. home has 5 acres of treed property and ca. 1,000 feet of water frontage! The home sits solidly on an impressive rock shelf – its steel beamed structure is architecturally engineered. The current owners marvel at how they enjoy having their view change with the weather;

whether it is cloudy, sunny, or foggy, the sea changes colour, and its movement is a rhythm that the new owners and their families will enjoy living their lives to.

his impressive ca 4,100 sq. ft. log home, set on a beautifully landscaped ca 159 acres has been built using select timber taken from the property and is fashioned in the tradition of an 1800’s Finnish style log home. The Wishon Ranch, centrally located in Northern British Columbia, is only 25 minutes south of the city of Prince George. Western Canada is known throughout the world for its rugged beauty and here, the opportunity for outdoor sport is as endless as the opportunity to attract tourists. From the ranch, you are just a few hours to Alberta by car where you can take in the magnificent Canadian Rockies, Banff and Jasper National Park. The owners and builders have cared for the Wishon Ranch for the past 30+ years and the attention to the land and home are easily seen. Of the ca 159 acres, ca 17 acres are cleared fields and ca 15 acres are rough cleared with the remaining as treed land. There are wonderful expansive views of the property with secluded areas close to home for relaxing. One special place is a log sauna, which is also fashioned in a Finnish style and is situated next to a very large pond. Water is gravity fed over hot stones providing a relaxing experience for warming and cleansing the body. Afterwards, a dip in the pond is required, at least if you’re from Northern Europe! Inside the log home, the rooms are very large on two levels and the colours of natural fir, spruce and pine are seen throughout. The Hyypia’s have taken great care in crafting a traditional log home and they supply their own power through the use of solar panels and battery storage. Three wood stoves heat the home and the wood supply is never an issue with over 120 treed acres.

The Wishon Ranch could easily be turned into a Lifestyle Business where one could raise horses, hay the fields, and create a true working Dude Ranch. There are riding pens, trails to a creek and a lake nearby, which could make this a terrific tourist destination. You could also create a group retreat setting for guests, to be utilized year ‘round. Just imagine the freedom of the open plains and a whole new lifestyle as owner of the beautiful Wishon Ranch

Livin’ It Up On The Water T

he 1980’s were somewhat idyllic for Keith Clark, as he spent a large part of them living and playing in and around Florida’s sun and surf scene. By 1990, Keith decided to get more serious about his pursuits and joined the Navy. With postings in the Middle East region, Keith had plenty of sun, lots of work, but precious little time to do what he loves most to do:

surf 32 RobinsonHarmsen.com

W

hen the time came for Keith to retire from the Navy, a good friend asked him “What would be your dream job?” Coincidently, Keith had just finished reading an article about the waves waiting to be caught in the Great White North; what was most exciting for Keith, is that the article was talking about Lawrencetown Beach which is near his hometown on Nova Scotia’s wild and rugged Eastern Shore! It was a “light bulb moment” for Keith; with Lawrencetown Beach just 25 kilometers from Nova Scotia’s capital city of Halifax, and with his desire to live somewhere he could surf every day, Keith realized that he really could live his dream of having a viable Lifestyle Business that integrated income with play. When you think of surfing, Nova Scotia is certainly not the first place that comes to mind – Hawaii yes, but Cape Breton Island – most likely no. It might surprise you to know that there are about 26 recognized surfing beaches in Nova Scotia offering world class surfing for all levels of surfers. Surfer Dude is a common expression to describe someone like Keith who lives to surf; so, it was not a stretch for him to call his surfing business Happy Dudes. Keith started his business from the back of a rental truck, offering surfing

Check out Happy Dudes by visiting www.happydudes.ca equipment rental, and lessons that focused on surf safety, skills, and etiquette. By 2003, interest in surfing had increased three-fold, so Keith sought out and found a place to operate his business in Three Fathom Harbour – just 3 kilometers from Lawrencetown Beach. Happy Dudes Emporium marked the beginning of his retail business which has expanded to three locations. One outlet is in Three Three Fathom Harbour, and the other is on East Petpeswick Road near Martinique Beach in Musquodoboit Harbour. A third outlet is actually mobile – a van well-stocked with high end rental gear and boards yet is normally parked right at Lawrencetown Beach. Keith has now expanded his business to reach well outside of Nova Scotia’s Eastern Shore, as he is manufacturing his own exclusive line of HILLBILLY Shape Boards; these funky-shaped boards are designed to work well in Nova Scotia’s surf, and are manufactured locally by shaper Scott Forbes. Keith’s Happy Dudes Emporium also carries other high quality surfing gear such as Oneill, Rusty, Surftech, Erie and Hotline; and, Happy Dudes has the largest selection of wetsuit rentals in Atlantic Canada. For the days when the surf is flat Happy Dudes offers Zodiac Surfing and Kayak rentals – quite a nicely diversified business Keith has built for such a specialized sport! Happy Dudes is doing well as is its owner – with his business getting bigger, his custom boards gaining recognition, his Surf Camp becoming more popular, and his own surf time increasing, you can bet that this Lifestyle Business entrepreneur is one very happy dude!

Christmas T

he golden leaves start covering up the green grass, the days get shorter and the temperature at night can fall below the freezing point. This is nature’s way of letting us know that Christmas is coming. Nova Scotia (which is one of Canada’s four oldest provinces) is rich with holiday traditions to celebrate this special time of the year.

December 6th is the annual Christmas gathering of the German Heritage Language School where the children and parents sing Canadian and German Christmas songs and wait for the arrival of Santa (Saint Nikolaus). Saint Nikolaus grew up amongst the forest and hills of Alpine Europe where he became known for his love of children and his generous and jolly spirit.

Every November, the province picks a majestic tree and sends it to Boston where it becomes the city’s official Holiday tree. This is Nova Scotia’s “Thank You” for Boston’s relief effort following the Halifax Explosion in December 1917. This year’s 14 metre tall white spruce was cut in Lunenburg County (about an hour south/west of Halifax). Once in Boston, the tree will be decorated with thousands of lights and becomes the focal point of the city's annual tree lighting ceremony.

The evening of December 24th is, for many German and Swiss families, the time when they get together with their families; a time when the children cannot wait for dinner to be over so that they can open the brightly colored parcels that lay under the brightly lit Tannenbaum (Christmas tree). In North America, gift unwrapping will have to wait until the morning of December 25th.

Back in Halifax, the end of November brings the annual Holiday Parade of Lights to the city. Numerous decorated floats parade through the downtown streets, which are filled with children surrounded with lights and clad in seasonal red and green – their smiles say everything about what the Holidays are all about. Venture an hour or two outside of Halifax to historic and charming Sherbrooke Village or to Wolfville in the Valley where costume-clad carollers roam the streets and the sound of silver bells heralds in the joy of the season.

in Nova Scotia The last night of the year in Halifax is celebrated at the Grand Parade downtown. Originally the site of both military drills as well as one of the oldest Anglican churches, the Grand Parade is where you can sing Auld Lang Syne with a live band while the fireworks announce the arrival of a New Year – not to worry if you don’t want to stand in the cold December air, the local television stations bring all the excitement to you as you gather in your warm house with friends. But, if low temperatures are what you are looking for, then you will want to participate in one of the many New Year’s Day Polar Bear swims which are organized all over Canada. Rain or shine, warm or cold (and believe me, it’s mostly cold) participants jump into oceans, lakes, rivers or whatever body of water they can find to cool down after a month of holiday celebrations.

Weihnachten D

Was wäre Weihnachten ohne Kinderlachen.

Lifestyle Business – A Booming trend. by Pam Jones

T

he average Canadian may be getting older, but there’s no slowing us down when it comes to making a move in the housing market. According to a recent article in The Financial Post, “nine million Canadian Boomers began turning 60 in 2005, and by 2020, about one in five of us will be 65 and over.” According to Canadian Mortgage and Housing’s Housing Market Outlook for Halifax, in 2000, there were approximately 56,000 people employed between ages 45 and 64. As of 2008, the number of employed people between the ages of 45 and 64 grew to over 81,000, an increase of 46 per cent. Today, Nova Scotians over 50 make up about one-third of the province’s population. The trend in real estate for those over 65 has traditionally been to downsize, sell the family home and move to a smaller house, townhouse or apartment. But today, seniors over 65, affectionately known as “zoomers”, are more healthy, active, and adventurous than they were a decade ago. As a zoomer, you don’t tend to see retirement as an end of work, rather, you see it as an opportunity to find something different to do with your life. In fact, according to recent research by the Royal Bank Financial Group, approximately 950,000 Canadians want to start a business within a year of retirement. Statistics Canada studies show that Canadians starting a retirement business account for more than 25 % of self-employed people in Canada and nearly 1/3 of the workforce. “Zenployment” is a new term that has popped up in the media lately. It may be just the term for you if you are looking to make a shift to a more meaningful life by choosing work that is less stressful and more personally rewarding. As far as zoomers go, zenployment seems to be taking off.

38 RobinsonHarmsen.com

A recent study by Metropolitan Life Insurance Company finds that: Nearly 60 % of baby boomers want a “feel good” job in retirement. Approximately 70% of women and 50% of men want a job that gives them purpose. At Robinson & Harmsen Lifestyle Real Estate Inc., we have met many wonderful people like you who have had successful careers, yet always dreamed of making a living from a special hobby or interest. A Lifestyle Property offers you opportunity to do that – to re-imagine your life in new ways, to do what you enjoy. If you love horses, a small guest ranch may be the perfect match. With a passion for cooking and entertaining, you could be the proud owner of a cozy restaurant or a quaint bed and breakfast. If you love to be around children, you could choose a fulfilling Lifestyle Property as the owner of a popular childcare centre. Nova Scotia offers so many beautiful and affordable possibilities. If you’re wondering if you have what it takes to run your own Lifestyle Business, the government of Nova Scotia operates an excellent resource online at www.gov.ns.ca called Access to Business. If you’re coming to Nova Scotia from another country, the team at Robinson & Harmsen can help put you in touch with all the information you need to make the transition to this beautiful province. Aging these days isn’t what it used to be. 65 is more like the new 55. It’s simply the starting point for “phase two” - living the life of your dreams. So what are you waiting for – re-imagine your life!

“Add to your Christmas Celebrations by serving up traditional French Tourtière”

V

isit a traditional French home at Christmas in Nova Scotia and you are sure to find a mildly spiced and herbed Tourtière (pie dish) that is absolutely delicious. It usually makes an appearance at Christmas as a side dish with a holiday meal, but is enjoyed throughout the winter months as dinner in many households. This is a wonderful addition to a Christmas dinner and can be easily prepared ahead of time and frozen uncooked. There are so many variations of this pie, so try adding a favourite root vegetable, or perhaps replace the pork or beef mixture with veal or create a seafood Tourtière! 1 tbsp (15 mL) vegetable oil 1 lb (1 kg) ground pork 1 lb (1 kg) ground beef 1-1/2 cups (375 mL) beef stock 3 onions, finely chopped 3 cloves garlic, minced 2 cups (500 mL) sliced mushrooms 1 cup (250 mL) finely chopped celery 3/4 tsp (4 mL) salt 1/2 tsp (2 mL) each cinnamon, pepper and dried summer savory 1/4 tsp (1 mL) cloves 2 tsp Cognac 1 cup (250 mL) fresh bread crumbs 1/2 cup (125 mL) chopped fresh parsley pastry for double-crust 9- or 10-inch (23 or 25 cm) pie 1 egg, beaten Preheat your oven to 400F and line a 9” or 10” pie plate with one of the two prepared pie crusts.

n a large frying pan, warm the vegetable oil and over medium-high heat and cook the pork, beef, onions, garlic, mushrooms, celery for about 15 minutes. Pour out any fat from the mixture and add the beef stock, herbs, Cognac and spices to the meat mixture and let simmer on a low-medium heat for about 20 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and add the breadcrumbs to the mixture and let sit for about 5 minutes. Place the filling in the pie plate that is lined with a crust and place the second pie crust on top of the filling. Create a scalloped edging and using Christmas cookie cutters, cut out some decorations with the remaining dough and place on the top. Beat an egg in a glass and lightly brush the egg on the top crust then place the pie in the oven for about 10 minutes at 400F then reduce the heat to 350F and cook for approximately 25 to 30 minutes, until the crust is golden brown. Let sit for 15 minutes before serving.
