O4 Product Development • Year 1 Form-Transition Form study on the transition of a cylinder, a box and a hexagonal prism.

LCD-Projector Integration project of different components into the shape of an lcd-projector

Speakers Design of a speaker-box for the Funk music style and try to integrate the characteristics of the music’s atmosphere.

Organic Shape Based on the thigh-bone of a cow, a scuba-dive computer with fish recognition possibilities was designed. The camera could also film the journey.

Beermat Holder Design of a beermat holder in one single material. 1 Metal: Sheet bending & Laser-cutting 97% of the metalsheet is used due to mapping

1 Plastic: Injection Molding

Reversed Design Observation & Analysis of existing products: functions, materials, interaction, color usage, ‌ After a SWOT analysis, points of improvement were indicated.

The Coca-Cola dynamics were included in the curves of the product

Form-Study: Combination Create a shape that contains the characteristics of both a product (Fishing Reel) and an animal (Scorpion).

Redesign: Humidity Absorber Design a one-piece plastic humidity absorber for public spaces.

O7 Product Development • Year 2 Forms & Technics Manual Soil Augers often don’t work in the ideal power range of the human user: When digging a hole, users often start too high, and when going down, they go so low that the backbone might be overstressed. The design provides a solution by an extendable axis that allows the user to dig as deep as needed. The handle can be lifted in such a way that the level always remains within the ideal powerzone of the user. Integrated Wrench-Wheel The handle can be lifted when inclined 20°. Package Design Design of a package for three products: 2 files and a file-cleaner by Lux-tool. The package was designd to be compact and in line with the corporate identity of the brand.

City Surfin’ During a one-week workshop on transport, the concept of CitySurfin’ was created. A wave shaped object passes by underneith a flexible cover. This creates a moving inclined surface on which skateboarders or bikers can ride. Physical exercise is encouraged and the polluting car will be left at home.

Product Concepts During half-a day brainstorming session, 2 product concepts were created: A Lemon cutting tool and a new way of rapid cloth-washing.

Paper Construction The assignment was to construct a paper bridge that could carry as much as possible “Boulles de jeux (735g each). The balls roll from the wall into their final position at 1m distance. Due to a very stiff and lightweight construction (118g), the bridge was able to hold 8 balls , with a momentum of 42,54Nm (4,34kg at 1m distance)!

Mechanical Design: Robot To obtain insight in mechanical transmissions, the students had to construct a robot made of Lego. The vehicle had to travel across an obstacle and to stop as close to the inner circle as possible. A ridge on the axis of the steering wheel made the robot turn at the appropriate moment so that the vehicle did not fall off the table and instead reached the inner circle.

Ergonomical Design: Powertools As Li-ion battery packs increased in energy density, new applications arised. On the eve of the launch of these 36V energy packs, students performed an ergonomical exercise to see to what extend the architecture of power-tools would be influenced and how current designs could be optimized. Therefore studies & prototypes on weight distribution were made as well as an extensive study on grips and the ideal force zone of the human body.

13 Product Development • Year 3 Foldible: Kitebuggy Size is often an issue for kite-buggies. Either they have to fit in the trunck of a car, or they have to be stored in small garages at the seaside. The collapsible buggy profides a significant size reduction and an increased conveniece in transportation from and to the beach. Additionaly the design stresses on a minimal amount of components in order to reduce production costs.

User Experience & Marketing: Air Refresher In partnership with P&G a new air refresher was designed for the Febreze brand. The concept that you’d always wake up in a fresh room: About half an hour before the alarm clock is set, the air refresher would produce a nice scent that fills the room. Additionally, a colorful backlight could enhance the atmosphere.

15 Product Development • Exchange Exchange Program: Rio de Janeiro An exchange program is not only very useful in terms of personal development: you learn how to live & deal with systems & values of another culture, you learn a new language, you meet new people, … But also in a professional matter, such an exchange program could be very enriching: other ways of living may trigger new ideas on new product or business opportunities. Therefore, Brazil, the country where I had the luck to spend 7 months was of great value to my education. This booming country is more than just beaches, football & carnival. It’s the motor of the Latin-American economy and people are aware and proud of it! With great oil reserves, world class biofuels and an immense diversity in people, ores, biological species, the Brazilians look forward to the future with nothing but optimism!

Exchange Program: Escola Superior de Disenho Industrial Ranked 50th worldwide, the Esdi design school appealed a lot to me. Not only is Brazil known for its graphical design talents. Apart from that they also excel in designing for people with limited financial resources. (‘The Bottom of The Pyramid’). During my 5 month period at Esdi, I took several courses in photography where I learned how to work with studio-lightning. Furthermore I had a course on visual techniques and one design assignment that aimed to solve the inconvenience of condense water dropping out of air conditioners. Graphical & Visualisation Techniques

Photography Course Camera Obscura, 4 openings Subject:VW Beetle

Design Assignment Reuse of condensation water of air conditioners

17 Product Development • Year 4 Automation: Lining machine for sports fields Painting lines on sports fields is a very labor-intensive job. Therefore, more and more sports field have installed synthetic grass. As an effort to maintain market share, the paint producer Lippens NV. requested an innovation. After a market and user analysis, an automatic lining device was designed. The machine works on RFID coordination and could work on every kind of pitch with only minimal investments or adaptations.

Futuristic Transport Concept In a one-week workshop, on sustainability in the transport sector, we tackled one of the least known and most important sources of pollution: Cargo-ships & Super-tankers. These vessels are responsible for 20% of greenhouse gas emissions on the planet. The most relevant technologies available were mapped and visualized in a futuristic concept that uses the energy from wind, sun and waves.

USer Experience Design: Digital Boardgame As traditional board games lose market share to computergames, the firms active in the industry seek to innovate. In partnership with Alcatel-Lucent & Groep T Leuven, I created the ‘Treasure Map’. The treasure map consists of a rollable multitouch OLED screen and 4 camera’s that can both register the dice and enhance the gaming experience for people on a distance. Apart from gaming, which is the main purpose of the device, users could also use it for online classes, internet or multimedia applications. In order to make the whole concept more tangible, a complete Graphical User Interface was designed for the boardgame RISK.

21 Product Development • Year 5 Graduation Project: System for Mobile & Informal Learning (SMIL) SMIL aims to facilitate the interaction between students and ‘the world’ as a learning environment. A pda and a digital learning platform provide scholars with the means to connect traditional school ‘learning’ to outside ‘exploring’. Through more autonomy and responsibility in projects, the students learn to take initiative and to plan and structure their work themselves. A pda, equipped with LTE communication technology helps students to capture and share their (learning) experiences with teachers and other students. Apart from integrated audiovisual sensors, the pda can connect to all sorts of different sensors via Zigbee technology.

23 Travel experiences & Hobbies Passions I have found myself lucky to have had the opportunity to travel a lot and get to know different people and cultures around the world. Often I like to try to capture these wonderful experiences by photography. Furthermore I am a passionate sport person. Aquatic sports, outdoor sports and snowboarding are the sports that are catching my attention the most.

25 Extracurricular Projects

Skateboard Lamination Skateboards are made out of laminated wood. In order to put theory into practice, I experimented on various models and worked as an assistant designer with Pupunha, a Brazilian producer of skate- & surfboards on a 100% ecological basis

Yacht Design As sailing is my passion, I aim to design my own yacht. Through this long term project I already learned a lot about aero- & hydrodynamics, balance and many different systems which are incorporated in modern yachts (energy, electrical circuits, communication, heating, ventilation, etc.)

Surfboards: Shaping During my exchange period in Rio de Janeiro, I did not only learn how to surf. I also decided to learn how to shape surfboards. With the guidance of an experienced shaper, I designed and crafted my own board.
