WAYNE AND ANGELA’S MUSE The welcome mat is out! Grand Rapids Magazine has been at the helm of a tremendous voyage as we’ve taken readers across the waves of preparation, planning and building that have led to the like-no-other home in East Grand Rapids’ Gaslight Village that now serves as both home and design studio to renowned architect Wayne Visbeen, AIA, IIDA, and wife Angela Visbeen, Director of Sales and Marketing for Visbeen Architects, Inc.
T
HIS MODERN-DAY dream home is a Smart Home, giving the owners ability to control devices such as heating and cooling from their cellular phone devices, even when traveling far from home. With a lower level and three floors above street level, the building boasts 6,000 sq ft designed for the utmost in efficiency, convenience, and comfort, both as a home and live-in, work-in showroom for Vision Interiors, Inc., the interior design firm also owned by the Visbeens and overseen by Julie Holmes. “The building will function for us in a very unique way. It’s our home, our office, and our showroom,” says Wayne. “While I’m designing a home, we can furnish it — fabrics, tile, fireplaces, lighting — and show clients all this in one facility.”
Visbeen Architects requires the best in workmanship and materials, and selected FBM-Foundation Building Materials, Lameyer Plumbing, Leading Edge Insulation Services & Icynene and Hedke Painting to create the exquisite components that would become home to he and Angela, as well as Vision Interiors. EPS Security was chosen to provide a safe, secure home and work environment. Financing for the project was provided by trusted local source, Grand River Bank. Vision Interiors Principal Designer, Julie Holmes, worked closely with the Visbeens to make this the perfect venue for their home and work lives. Designing the interior as a showroom, everything — every light fixture, cabinet, furniture item and more — can be purchased through Vision Interiors. With the first floor utilized for Vision Interiors, the second floor flex space not only accommodates offices for Visbeen Architects and Vision Interiors, but serves as a guest residence for customers requiring overnight lodging or should Wayne and Angela require additional space for their immediate families. The third level is home to the Visbeens’ state-of the art living space that includes pull-out, walk-in closets in the master bedroom and offers an incredible view of Gaslight Village’s urban setting.
APPROACHING THE SIMPLE store front that faces Croswell Avenue in the trendy, upscale Gaslight Village neighborhood of East Grand Rapids, it might be easy to mistake the threestory structure for the interior design business that it is. Yet like the building’s façade, that’s only the surface. THE SMOKED GLASS DOOR with the simple modern sculpture crowning is the key to what’s inside: that which is both simple and functional, as well as artsy and inspiring. To open this door is to be invited into a space with an open yet cozy feeling designed for the entry way and waiting area of Visbeen Architects. To move beyond that first room is to explore the extraordinary by way of interior design and optimized living and working under one roof. AN IDEAL FIT FOR THE VISBEENS’ on-the-move lifestyle — they travel often and their business is an integral aspect of their daily living — one beauty of the home-meets-office here is the simplicity in exterior care. A cosmopolitan couple like the Visbeens chose a location that required virtually no landscaping, instead embracing the beauty of the urban feel of the neighborhood they chose. This is metropolitan living, simple, compact, and with attention to the ambiance of city living.
Ease of lifestyle, precision and maximizing space are the foci of what is now home to both Wayne and Angela as well as Vision Interiors. “It’s an old concept, you had a market and you lived on top, but we’re bringing it into today in a way that is totally different,” explained Angela. Different? Very much so. With amenities including flat screen televisions that transition to mirrors, a three-tiered oven that includes a steamer, an ice cube maker that produces perfectly clear ice and a heating-cooling system that allows for varying temperature settings on each floor as well as air purity comparable to that of a hospital operating room, the standard of excellence here is unparalleled. There’s even a locking sunglasses cubby on the approach to the garage — the garage with its own fireplace. Wayne, an award-winning architect, designed the home, completing the showroom-living space with décor selected from Vision Interiors. Stepping forward as the Design Home presenting sponsor is The Sharpe Collection, representing BMW, Mini, Jaguar and Land Rover. George Sharpe, Jr. made a check presentation of $5,000 to the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital Foundation June 29 at the Design Home gala. Proceeds from all ticket sales to the Design Home gala benefitted the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital Foundation. Foundation representative and specialist, Devin Pierson, expressed her gratitude for the money raised for the hospital, saying, “Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital is
extraordinarily grateful to you for your generous support in helping us provide the best health care for our kids. After all, the best possible health care for kids is health care that is all kids, all the time. Thank you to Grand Rapids Magazine and Design Home Gala for choosing Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital as your charity of choice for this year. We are forever grateful.” Additional financial contributions were made by Grand River Bank and Standard Lumber, as well as proceeds collected from auction items. More than $4 million is needed annually to support more than 20 essential programs and services for the children and families served by Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, where, with the help of specialists trained in pediatrics, children are treated with the greatest attention paid to their physical, developmental and emotional needs. Through more than 300 pediatric physicians in 50 pediatric specialties serve 7500 inpatient admissions every year and 186,000 visits, they deliver high-quality pediatric subspecialty care to patients for the best health outcomes. During the Design Home process, we have shared with readers the unique elements that make this a stand-out Visbeen Architects design loaded with exceptional attention to detail and extraordinary accoutrements throughout. Come on in, Design Home 2017 is ready, and the welcome mat is out.

“The important thing for Wayne was he really wanted to express the detail he is known for in his architecture and design. Wayne wanted to exhibit that level of customization; he’s very innovative.” Brad Rottschaefer, President of Mosaic Properties
Exterior THE HIGHLIGHT of the building’s exterior is the awning designed by Wayne Visbeen and built by Dan Carlson. Combining the appeal of modern sculpture and functionality, this awning includes a glass level extending over the door as part of its design. SIMPLIFIED, URBAN LIVING in a walkable neighborhood is the dream realized by owners Wayne and Angela Visbeen. The home was designed by Wayne, owner of Visbeen Architects, Inc. He and Angela chose Grand Rapids-based Mosaic Properties as a key team member for the project. THE LIVING IS SIMPLIFIED, but the detail used to make this vision a reality is extraordinary. Julie Holmes of Vision Interiors was assigned the interior design work, and some of the best local companies were brought in for their expertise and impeccable reputations in the industry. Bekins, Rockford Kitchen Designs/Wooden Hammer and Virginia Tile were on the projects ‘must have’ list.
Ur
THE EXTERIORS of the building itself and attached garage offer a look that is modern, yet classic. WHEN EXCELLENCE was sought in exterior stucco, the Visbeens selected trusted source Sto-Ex/Foundation Building Materials. DIRECTED LIGHT FIXTURES were chosen to illuminate the entrance of the Visbeen home and business, Vision Interiors by Visbeen Architects, adding the building’s own warm presence in the Gaslight Village neighborhood. THIS USE OF directed lighting is likewise added above the CHI Carriage House Overlay garage door powered by the LifteMaster smart phone garage door opener by Zylstra Door, merging the personality of the Visbeen home and Vision Interiors.
KOLBE & KOLBE WITH SUNTUITIVE WINDOWS AND DOORS were used throughout the home, optimizing use of natural light on each level. Pictured here in the seating area adjacent to the entryway, they allow a view of the upscale neighborhood.
Interior: The Entryway and Seating Area BEKINS AUDIO, VIDEO & APPLIANCE, AND CLASSIC STEREO were the chosen suppliers for electronics and appliances throughout the building. Pictured here is one of several specialized flat screen televisions by Seura, which transforms to a mirror when not in use. Bekins also supplied the audio system, with each room in the building able to listen to different sources simultaneously. The audio systsems can also be grouped as desired, so certain rooms, offices, floors or even the entire building can be listening to the same station. Speakers are discreetly installed in each room using a speaker form that’s installed during construction, making it possible for the speakers to be flush with the ceiling. ALL FURNISHINGS were selected and supplied by Vision Interiors.
BELDEN BRICK & SUPPLY, a Grand Rapids-based, family owned business of 30 years, is known for approaching construction like a fine art. The contrast of the popular, urban-appeal interior brick used here with the texture of the wood flooring and textured-surface wall give this space a stand-out appeal. Thin Brick was used throughout the Visbeen building.
URBAN PLANK FLOORING BY VISION INTERIORS, known for their custom wood flooring and old world craftsmanship, was chosen for the wood flooring in the Visbeen’s home and work space. That first moment one enters a home or office — or in this case, one in the same — is a decision-making moment about the feel of the space. Urban Plank’s addition here enhances that moment by adding both warmth and a classic appeal.
DOVETAIL WORKSHOPS created this sunglasses cubby for Angela Visbeen. Conveniently located en route to the garage, this locking cubby keeps Angela’s sunglasses organized and easy to access on her way out the door.

THE VISBEENS SOUGHT a simplified lifestyle in combining their work life and home life. The addition of an elevator in their live-work space allows an easy option for moving between the three floors and lower level of the building. SERVING MICHIGAN since 1950, McNally Elevator Company was the obvious choice for the three-level live/work space.

Vision Interiors Showroom/Office
THE UNIQUENESS OF this Design Home building resides largely in dual purpose: to serve as both Vision Interiors’ showroom as well as home to the owners of the building and business. Here we see individual pieces working both functionally and providing options for clients. EACH SELECTED by Julie Holmes of Vision Interiors, the Counter or Bar Stool is by Woodbridge, upholstered in a vibrant fabric choice, the counter-height stool by Lorts offers clean lines and classic simplicity, while the Bar or Counter Stool upholstered in a subtle plaid features a swivel feature.

INSTALLATION & REPAIR CONSTRUCTION SEWER & DRAIN NAPOLEON FIREPLACES were the Visbeens’ choice for the fireplaces throughout their home, and even the one installed in their garage. This Napoleon Fireplace is a central point on the main floor, Vision Interiors’ area. Belden Brick & Supply provided the beautiful brickwork here.
HYDRONICS
ACCESSORIES BY VISION INTERIORS, including faux topiaries and blue-and-white pottery pieces, flank a convertible flat screen television-mirror supplied by Bekins. A wooden bowl displayed with custom brackets adds the final touch.

Second Floor: Flex Space WITH VISION INTERIORS on the main level and the Visbeens’ private living quarters on the third, the second floor is a hybrid, with the design studio beside the second story landing, and flex space nearby.
“A lot of our clients become friends. If someone is coming from Bay Harbor or St. Joseph, or from Houston or Knoxville, it makes sense for them to spend a large amount of time. We can host them.” Angela Visbeen, Director of Sales and Marketing
MID-CENTURY MODERN Sconces were chosen to flank the Murphy bed in the flex space. ACCORDING TO ANGELA, the flex space serves three different functions: a guest apartment as needed, an entertainment space, and a space to show people how they can live exquisitely by maximizing the space available to them. DESIGNED AND FURNISHED by Vision Interiors, the flex space has a king-size Murphy bed, a flat screen television, and a conference table. The murphy bed is the ideal addition to the notion of a flexible space room here, and Julie Holmes selected easy-to-move furniture available to make space as needed. The Visbeen family sometimes uses the room as an entertainment space, and when guests arrive, the luxury and comfort is theirs.
NATURAL LIGHTING and strategically placed light fixtures create a bright workspace for Vision Interiors’ employees, with work stations placed at windows for maximum use of light and view.
THE URBAN PLANK wood flooring was specifically selected as one of the most significant aspects of the overall appeal of each room in which it was used. Here, the texture and colors within the wood enhance the experience of being present in the space.

Second Floor: Wayne and Angela Visbeen’s Office WAYNE AND ANGELA VISBEEN’S office, conveniently located at the second floor landing, where even the hallway is utilized. With the building serving as Vision Interiors showroom, designer Julie Holmes arranged to showcase the light fixtures, manufactured by Visual Comfort, incorporating each into the ideal space throughout the home-office space.
BOTTOM RIGHT: THIS HANGING LIGHT FIXTURE provides a soft light above the desk in the Visbeen’s office while bringing its classic personality to the space. FAR LEFT: ZODIAC SYMBOLS ADORN the antique brass metal band adorning this ornate, hanging light fixture beautifully displayed above the stairwell for light and adding interest. LEFT: REMINISCENT OF MID-CENTURY modern, this light fixtures angular sides and star-like shape bring personality to a simple hallway.
Second Story All-Season Porch: THE APPEAL OF AN ALL SEASON porch is unparalleled in the Michigan climate, and this second-story porch offers year-round enjoyment with comfort and urban view abounding. A casual eating area beside a sliding glass wall opens up to fresh air and outdoor ambiance.
RETRACTABLE SOLUTIONS was the choice to make this happen, installing individual, motorized screens and clear vinyl sections by Phantom Screens to descend as desired to allow or block air flow. The motorized components are concealed beneath the soffits with removable panels in place to allow maintenance, if needed. It’s the attention to details that make each area of the Visbeen Home and Vision Interiors extraordinary.

Third Floor: Kitchen/Dining Area VISION INTERIORS DESIGNED the Visbeen kitchen to accommodate their desire for optimal use of space. Rockford Kitchen Design is the exclusive distributor of Wooden Hammer Cabinetry and supplied the cabinets for the kitchen.
“I’m a big fan of mixing metals. It’s a living finish, originally it looks like polished gold, it’s really stunning. It will oxidize over time and take on its own darkening patina.” Julie Holmes, Vision Interiors
READY FOR ANY CHALLENGE, Wooden Hammer made possible the television above the stove, something the Visbeens desired for their kitchen and eating area. Regardless of the challenges of the location, including heat from the stove, so close to the television’s electronic wiring, Wooden Hammer made it happen. LIGHT-HUED GRANITE counter tops coordinate beautifully with the light color chosen for the kitchen cabinets, giving the kitchen a clean, open feel.
WOODEN HAMMER CABINETRY is finished with furniture-grade finish in any custom color clients desire. A soft gray finish was selected for one area here, while a walnut finish prevails on the opposite wall. BEKINS WAS THE VISBEEN’S CHOICE for kitchen appliances, including the two Gaggenau refrigerators discreetly concealed in the walnut-finish, Wooden Hammer cabinetry shown here. IN KEEPING WITH the goal of smart use of space, a pull-out table in the island was added, providing seating for three — or for six when brought fully into the area. The table is designed to slide completely under the island counter top when not in use, adding ease of serving and seating space for entertaining. The darker table and counter stools offer interest in the contrast they create, much like the walnut-finish cabinetry by Wooden Hammer so near the soft gray color selected for the kitchen cupboards. LIGHTING BY Vision Interiors, showcasing Visual Comfort light fixtures.
ABUNDANT SEATING is provided in the Visbeen’s private living area, creating a cozy conversation area perfect for entertaining friends and family, or just for a comfortable place to relax. All the pieces here were supplied by Vision Interiors. Flooring supplied by Urban Plank Flooring adds to the warmth and simplicity of the room. PERMODA AIR Temperature Specialties, Inc., was recommended by Harry Boody, owner and operator of Energy Innovations by Harry Boody for the heating and cooling of the three-story building shared by the Visbeens and Vision Interiors.
3rd Floor Porch THE VISBEEN’S THIRD FLOOR living space includes a railed porch offering a unique view of the Gaslight Village neighborhood in which the building is nestled. NAPLEON FIREPLACES supplied the grill pictured here, as well as the fire pit, able to work with either propane or natural gas. VISION INTERIORS’ Julie Holmes chose teak outdoor furniture by Gloster, explaining, “Teak is a nice, all-weather wood, and the furniture has a nice contemporary look. It looks inviting.”
Third Floor: Master Bedroom Suite THE MASTER BEDROOM SUITE mixes colors and textures resulting in great appeal. The hue of the Urban Plank flooring counters nicely with the walnut-finished cabinets and become the focal point of this space. Oil-rubbed bronze hardware adds distinction to the simple lines of the cabinetry. THE MASTER BEDROOM is a combination of subtle colors and textures and ‘wow’ technology. Bekins supplied and installed a flat screen television, which folds down from the ceiling above the bed, and folds back up at the push of a button.
THE VISBEEN’S AND VISION INTERIORS aren’t the only new kids on the block. Dovetail Workshops, a recent addition to the Visbeen family of design, makes a proud entrance with the introduction of side-by-side, pull-out, walk-in closets. Designed by Wayne Visbeen and Dovetail Workshops, the closet doors rotate open to form an 8-feet by 12-feet walk-in closet. MIRRORED PANELS on the closet doors give the master bedroom an even more spacious feel, with equal function in reflecting the best-dressed look achieved through attire by A.K. Rikk’s. WEST MICHIGAN haberdasher A.K. Rikk’s wardrobe makes the exquisite design quality stand out with the excellence of clothing displayed.
ONE STEP FROM the master suite’s vanity area is this modern master bath with Kohler fixtures by Lameyer Plumbing, located in Dorr, Mich. The control panel above the paper roll controls functions for the stool, raising the lid or seat, controlling water flow, and even offering a drying option. BEKINS SUPPLIED AND INSTALLED a mirror-television in the vanity. When the Visbeens so choose, they can watch TV, and the screen becomes seamless with the surrounding mirror. VISION INTERIORS’ light fixture choice here is a modern, art-inspired ball with antique brass ceiling mount. Here again, Vision Interiors’ Julie Holmes mixes metal colors in the room, creating interesting appeal. VIRGINIA TILE was chosen as the source for tile, with the bathroom floor and shower walls, ceiling and floor done in varying size tiles of Honed Marble in the Bianco Venatino hue. GLASS SHOWER DOORS give the sense of a large space.
WHO WOULDN’T LOVE to sleep in a sleek space like the children’s custom bunks by Dovetail Workshops. Use of light colors open up the space while a darker hue gives the perfect contrast. Detail in the trim is key to accomplishing this look, with polished nickel fixtures and hardware providing the finishing touch. VISION INTERIORS’ Principal Designer, Julie Holmes, selected this style of polished nickel light for the headboard on each bed in the children’s room, the detailed fixture works beautifully with the room’s woodwork.
