HOUSE EXTENSION, HISTON, CAMBRIDGE (PROPERTY PASTORS DEVELOPMENTS, 2022) Planning application for house extension in Cambridge. The client wanted to amend the internal layout to make more use of their existing space. With the inclusion of a new shower room, the living room could be used as a bedroom in the future. Care was taken to integrate a flat roof into the existing single storey pitched roofs the side projection, which kept the costs down. Apart from a small extensions on the front and back of the house, the benefits were all achieved internally by simple changes and the introduction of more natural light, without wholesale changes to the existing structure.

CHRISTIAN CENTRE REFURBISHMENT, VAUXHALL, LONDON (PROPERTY PASTORS DEVELOPMENTS, 2021) Planning and preparation of tender documentation for building refurbishments and external landscaping at a Christian Centre in Vauxhall. The existing external rear spaces comprised two disconnected spaces at different levels. We proposed to connect these with a ramp, which provided a compliant fire escape route, while also providing more usable spaces. The multifunctional featured low planters that functioned as seats and space for low maintenance border planting. A new bay window to the front elevation offered a welcoming space filled with light while also providing views out to the green spaces opposite the building.

GRANGE ROAD, SOUTHWARK, LONDON (PROPERTY PASTORS DEVELOPMENTS, 2022) Planning preparation for new boundary railing to a dwelling in Southwark, London. The dwelling was positioned beside a listed building and pre-application advice was sought to determine the specific issues the development would need to take account of. The existing external spaces still accommodated the remains on an old boundary wall that divided the two plots and rain divided the footpath from driveway.

SHORE ROAD, GREENISLAND (ALAN PATTERSON DESIGN LLP, 2020) New housing development providing 39no. new dwellings in Greenisland. One of the key aspects of the scheme was that the site was located in an Area of Townscape Character (ATC), and therefore posed the question of how the new development would appropriately fit into the existing streetscape, which contained several distinguished buildings and examples of built form. The development was also situated alongside a major road, and the development’s layout provides a frontage to this road, while also providing a smaller parallel road for safe access to the dwellings.

GOLDENVIEW / AVONDALE HOUSING DEVELOPEMNT, GREENISLAND (ALAN PATTERSON DESIGN LLP, 2019) New housing development in Greenisland providing 46 homes, which was shortlisted for the 2020 RICS Social Impact Awards (NI region). The success of the project was built on an ambition to build high quality dwellings, streets and spaces with the intention of developing a sense of ‘place’. A combination of key design decisions, including material selection, street design, landscape features and boundary treatment, produced an attractive and unique living environment. The wide variety of accommodation types and sizes provided a wide variety of buyers the opportunity to experience a similar living experience.

PROPOSAL FOR IRISH FARMHOUSE & GARAGE, CO. DOWN (ALAN PATTERSON DESIGN LLP 2018) This project comprised a 3500 sqft detached dwelling and detached garage, and I acted as project lead throughout the project. As works began on site, I coordinated and chaired team meetings, circulated agendas and reports, and acted as a guide to the clients through the construction phase, informing them of the current stage and what information should be expected. I gained valuable experience from site visits and from liaising with the Contractor and design team when issues arose.

ROWANTREE ROAD, CO. DOWN (ALAN PATTERSON DESIGN LLP, 2019) The site was in a rural setting and represented a gap within a continuous built frontage. The design was developed to improve the design’s ability to respond to the vernacular architecture and rural setting. During this process it was decided that we should reconsider the presentation of the scheme, and I proposed one minimal aesthetic and one traditional 'farm cottage' aesthetic. The presentation method reflected the architecture. This challenge proved to be personally fulfilling, and also helpful for the client to visualize the scheme options.

BELVOIR CRESCENT, LISBURN, CO. ANTRIM (ALAN PATTERSON DESIGN LLP, 2020) Planning application for two semi-detached dwellings. The site was small and surrounded by housing, and the application process was be drawn out, following much interest from local residents. The proposal was reduced to a single storey and designed to provide private spaces for the new dwellings while also providing a street frontage that responded to the existing urban fabric. The dwelling were designed to be accommodated by older residents and featured well a simple plan with a partially enclosed courtyard space in the middle.

PROPOSED GATE LODGES, PORTADOWN (ALAN PATTERSON DESIGN LLP, 2017) Proposal for 2no. gate lodges to mark the entrance of the second phase of the housing development where the site was located. They are envisaged as three-storey dwellings with a relatively small footprint, with brick detailing and hipped roofs. I developed a proposal which reflected the traditional Arts and Crafts style identified in the brief. These were presented in two streetscape drawings, to illustrate how the dwellings related to surrounding dwellings, gateposts and boundary walls, which increased the sense of arrival and entrance.

PROPOSAL FOR STREETSCAPE DESIGN, L’DERRY (ALAN PATTERSON DESIGN LLP, 2020) Situated within a larger development, this project comprised an area of housing that exhibited a contrasting style to the wider development, due to its position and existing landscape features. During the deliberations of selecting the particular style to run with, I developed two streetscapes, illustrating a similar Arts and Crafts style, with contrasting material finishes. The first was a take on Voysey’s architecture and comprised white render and stone houses, grey windows and asymmetrical openings, while the second comprised a mix of brick and render houses with grey windows and strapping details, regular forms and more symmetry.
