School Spotlight The School for Creative
and Performing Arts
We’re huge fans of teachers and all the places where they teach! To show our appreciation, we’ve made it our goal to shine a bright light on schools around the country. We've started with our hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio at The School for Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA). This brochure features photos of their students and schools, and highlights their faculty and staff. Part of Cincinnati Public Schools, the SCPA is a K-12 arts school with 1,400 kids nestled in downtown Cincinnati. Students in fourth grade and up focus on one of seven disciplines: creative writing, visual arts, drama, dance, vocal music, instrumental music, and technical theatre. These artistic pursuits happen on top of all the normal course work found at any other school. “It’s not for the faint of heart,” says Angela Powell Walker, Artistic Director. “It takes a lot of discipline. It’s not a place not to be 100% committed.” A typical school day might run from 8:26 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. followed by a rehearsal that lasts until 6:30 p.m. Performance nights run later, and there’s homework to stay on top of, too. But SCPA kids also go on to find success in just about any other career you can dream up — even heading to places like NASA. “We’re creating kids who are going to the stars and who are the stars,” Powell Walker says. “We’re not just teaching students how to write, dance or sing a song. We’re creating whole human beings.” She believes the arts are humanity, as well as a powerful way to enrich the educational experience.

It’s hard to imagine that there’s a typical day for Powell Walker, who seems to be in constant motion as the Artistic Director at the School of Creative & Performing Arts in Cincinnati, Ohio. You might find her meeting with the school’s artistic teachers or directing student productions. “I’m now calling us a Time Timer School!” Powell Walker says. “The Time Timer is literally everywhere in the building. It’s an amazing tool.” You’ll spot them in the gym, cafeteria, classrooms and rehearsal spaces. For example, during rehearsals for Matilda, Powell Walker used the Time Timer® MAX to help her keep things on track and loved that she could change out the faces. The two-hour face could help her track an entire rehearsal. She also used it to track how much time to spend on different sections of the production. “It’s gone off a few times when I wasn’t ready,” she says. “But it’s helped us to be more productive.”
