Executive Summary The Taggart House is a small family home located in Portballintrae, Bushmills, United Kingdom. Just North of Ireland. In 2015 the residents added a nice addition to their home, a 40.0 square meter modern attachment that really shines in the neighborhood. The Architects and designers at Nest Architects who designed the new addition were given a challenge by the family, and they delivered with style. The family wanted a new addition to their home that will last for their next generation of kids/family and friends to be very warm, inviting and very spacious. But with a twist, the Taggart House is located near a popular beach community in its town of Portballintrae (actually meaning is “Port of the beach settlement�) and are avid surfers. They wanted the new addition to their home to represent the beach and most importantly surfing and a view of the backyard that has lots of flowers, a garden, and a far-off view of the water. Nest Architects did their homework and made the look of the roof to the attachment to resemble a surf board, its long and has a curve. The curve is used on the roof protrudes out from the home and acts as its own canopy, you can sit outside on a rainy day and stay completely dry. On the left side of the house they added an outdoor shower for when they came back from the sandy beach to clean their selves off. The front of the new addition has tons of natural light, with big windows covering a large part of the wall, around the windows they used a stained hardwood that really pops outs and gives a warm feeling. Open spacious living and kitchen space that is more than enough for the future for the family.

Section 1.0 – Introduction For my final project, I was assigned the ArchDaily assignment of The Taggart House, located in Portballintrae, Bushmills, U.K. just north of Ireland. The architects are the Nest Architects, contractors are DLane Construction its 40.0 sq. meters and built in 2015. It’s a modern attachment to an older house made for the future generations of the client’s family. The clients are the Taggart family, they have lived in the house for numerous year and love the beach community. The name Portballintrae comes from the meaning “port of the beach settlement”. There instructions for the architects and designers were simple they want to keep the cottage feel of their house, have surfing as a big inspiration, and most importantly make it so their future family can enjoy the house just as much as they do. The reason for my assignment is to better understand the design concepts and materials used, overall inside and out of the architecture for the house provided. Including how per square meters a room will cost / the overall of the house. As well as understand how a house will be designed and why they put something or used something where they did, and the result of that. Also, seeing the outcome of an architect’s final construction using the clients desired design and overall outlook for their family home. Before the addition was put on there was an addition there. The clients did not like how the addition felt and didn’t not like how little natural light came in. The view from the back is the most important to them the view faces the mountains and their spacious back yard, and garden. The Taggart House is the exact design they asked for. Through the next few pages I will cover the following: The architectural features and styles of the house, the circulation and zoning of the house, construction systems and materials, and my recommendations. Following I will provide my detailed drawing showing the design of the Taggart house, and the calculations and construction spreadsheets.

Section 2.0 - Architectural Features and Style

The Taggart House is a perfect example of an Irish home from the front and in the back they added an attachment that has a very modern look and feel. The attachment is 40 sq. m and located in the beach community Portballintrae just north of Ireland. The family are very passionate of surfing so the Architects at Nest Architects designed the back addition to resemble a surf board. The back entrance is designed to have lots of natural light, with big open windows that cover most of the wall. The exterior walls look sleek with a plain white finish and wood details on the doors and window frame. The above ceiling is also wood. Near the middle of the roof it slopes down and a point protrudes from the side. This acts as a built in canopy used for shade of rain coverage. The roof is a low-pitched roof. The back has a personal garden and open lawn space. The inside is very spacious and with tons of natural light coming in, many windows surround the addition. The inside like the back entrance is plain white with the wood details, such as windows, doors, with the furniture to match. The inside is to provide a visual representation of the next generation of their family life without forgetting the past. The spaciousness is made to bring family and friends together. The main house is older with a rustic visual it stands tall with traditional masonry construction and covered with self-colored white render that makes reference to the historic character of the area. The main house is sheltered by its half hip roof, that holds many sky lights.

Section 3.0 - Circulation & Zoning of the House To go along with the visuals of my project I will start my walk-through at the front drive-way of and the house, immediately take you to the back than to the front of the house. Starting in the drive-way you enter in a low slope drive-way that sounds you with high brick sides, to your left you walk up few stairs that bring you to the open front lawn. Heading north to walk to the back-yard you take few steps and you pass by storage areas for the beach equipment. On your right beside the storage is a walk under external shower area for before and after the beach, a few steps away from there is the gate to get into the back yard. The back yard is big and spacious, that has garden area and plant scenery. Here you face the back entrance and newest addition to the house. The right side of the building has the main door; step threw and you enter a large living room section with an attached kitchen. Beyond the kitchen is a dining area with bathroom and utility closet on your right side. The dining room has a door and beyond that is a hall way, to your left is the main entrance to the house, in front on the left is a large sitting room, on the right is a larger entertaining sitting room. Heading back to the hall way, completely to the right is a stair set that brings you to the upstairs that has all the bedrooms another sitting room and a large bathroom with utility room.

Section 4.0 - Construction Systems and Materials Pulling into the drive-way you are entering a small slope down drive way that has large brick fencing around you, up a few stairs to the main lawn. The original main standing part of the house (the front side) was your typical masonry construction using a light shade brick for the exterior, and is covered with self-colored white render that refers to the historic character of the area. The roof of the main house is a half-hip roof using shadowed three-tabs shingles. The chimney is following the same design as the house and is using masonry brick. As the main house is older matching the community, its windows and doors are newer and are a nice stained wood, and the windows are double pain modern windows. The addition to the house, the surf board manifests itself as a cantilever over the newly formed courtyard and coupled with the use of a hardwood timber soffit provides both protection from the elements and a tactile building face. The addition is a low-pitched roof using hard woods and metals for the cover. Inside windows and doors are matching hardwood. The house 2 main sources are in concrete and woods. Making the house with a very warm feel.

Section 5.0 – Conclusion / Resolution In conclusion to the assignment the addition to house is very beautiful but it’s in the back of the house so no one is able to admire it, except for friends and family. The front of the house blends in with the neighborhood well but when you have something this visually pleasing you would want to show it off. As the main structure of the house does blend in with the neighborhood the new addition does not, it’s a completely different style. You go from rustic house that feels cold, to a bright modern addition. The front of the house could use a makeover it almost feels blocked off, but I guess in a beach community also depending on the owners that could be what they are looking for.
