POSITIVE PARENT Discuss that success requires hard work and doesn’t happen overnight.

By Kim Seidel

Talk about confidence; it develops over time with a lot of practice and patience. Consider your child’s personality when selecting activities.

Help Your Child Out of Their

Discover your child’s interests and dreams by truly listening to him or her.

How to be an encouraging parent

Point out your child’s strengths as gifts to share with others.

Comfort Zone With more children overscheduled these days than not, many parents wouldn’t think the need to push children to get involved would be an issue. Surprisingly, that’s not the case. “The high pressure on children to succeed holds many kids back from trying in the first place,” says Kristy Braunreiter, a parent educator. “The pressure doesn’t always come from parents, but society in general.” The media, too, showcase perfect performances by athletes and entertainers that children can easily assume happen overnight. They’re too young to realize that success requires hard work, practice, and patience, Braunreiter says. “When children start a new activity, explain to them it will require hard work,” Braunreiter says. “This will help them to develop confidence over time.”

Considering your child’s personality The initiative to participate also depends on a child’s personality. Braunreiter knows her 9-year-old son’s Type A personality wants to be the best immediately. That causes Lars to shy away from new programs. To help encourage children, set aside time to talk with them about their interests, Braunreiter suggests. “As parents, we know our children the very best,” she says. Point out their strengths; tell them these are gifts to share with others. Another mom, Jessica Apfel Miller, recognized that her daughter Jada tended to have performance anxiety. At one point, her then 12-year-old daughter refused to consider joining show choir.

Visit with coaches and other parents to learn about specific programs. Attend a class or practice session with your child to determine if it’s a good fit. If it doesn’t work out, don’t rush your child into selecting another activity. Commit to the season. Don’t allow your child to quit when it gets difficult. Attend your child’s events and games as an encouraging parent, rather than a critical one.

What do you get when you mix fresh local seafood, live music, beautiful weather, and 60,000 people? You get Destin’s Annual Seafood Festival and a whole lot of fun. As has long been the custom, the Destin Seafood Festival will kick off Destin’s month-long Fishing Rodeo during this three-day celebration of family fun on the Destin Harbor Boardwalk.

EC_Parent_September_October_2013.indd 6

Naturally, you would expect to find amazingly fresh, local seafood, which is always in strong supply. The mile-long boardwalk will be lined with vendors selling their delicious fare; each offering a different product from the others. In addition to seafood, visitors will also enjoy a wide variety of local and regional arts and crafts vendors. There are rides for the kids and activities to keep visitors of every age entertained. With three main stages and stages in every harbor restaurant, music will fill the air all weekend long with both local and out of state acts. Whatever you are looking for can be found as you meander down the Harbor Boardwalk. In the early days, the wives of the Destin fishermen formed an auxiliary to support the Charter Boat Association. They worked to meet the needs of families who were going through tough times and supported the fishing community in any way they could. It was these ladies who organized and put on the first Seafood Festival and paved the way for what we experience today. This huge event has come to be much more that the small community festival that was its beginning back in 1979. Today the Seafood Festival is a celebration of Destin, its rich history, and what makes this World’s Luckiest Fishing Village so special. More than 500 local volunteers put in countless hours to ensure the success of the Annual Destin Seafood Festival. The lasting success of the festival can be attributed to the strong efforts of the local community. This year the Seafood Festival will take place on October 4, 5 and 6. Make your plans now to be in town for the 35th Annual Destin Seafood Festival, and experience the fun for yourself. v

“I knew in my heart of hearts that Jada wanted to try out for show choir,” Apfel Miller says. “It blew my mind when she told me that she didn’t want to try out.”

Some children thrive on competition, while others prefer a low-key activity. This mom took action that other parents may find surprising: Apfel Miller decided to make Jada go through the auditions. She went so far as to walk Jada into school and turn in her permission sheet for try-outs that day. Although Jada admitted she was nervous, Miller could sense her excitement too. “She was convinced she wasn’t going to make it, but I could see she felt good about trying out,” Apfel Miller says. “As her mom, I was proud that she got out of her comfort zone.” When Jada was selected for the show choir, Apfel Miller says Jada displayed a roller coaster of emotions: relief, fear, worry, and elation. Apfel Miller continued to show her daughter encouragement, including through the first difficult days of show choir camp. “By the third day at camp, she found her confidence and was having so much fun,” Apfel Miller says. “Now you can find her and her girlfriends practicing their routines every chance they get.”

Supporting your child’s activities Once a child chooses an activity, Braunreiter recommends learning about the program. Some children thrive on competition, while others prefer a more low-key activity. Talk to coaches and program leaders about your questions and concerns. “A hesitant child is relying on you, their parent, for support and encouragement,” Braunreiter says. “They’re trusting you to help them determine whether it’s a good fit for them.” Visit a class or practice session with your child to determine if it would offer a good experience for the child. Sometimes it helps a more reserved child to invite a friend to participate in an activity with them. When a child decides they’d rather not participate in a program— or they aren’t accepted into an activity—give your child time before rushing to the next possibility, Braunreiter says. “If you make it too pressurized, it will backfire on you as the parent,” she says. “Your child needs to know that they’re being heard and respected.” However, when a child opts to get involved in an activity, followthrough is important for both child and parent. Ensure the child attends practices and games. Commit to the season—no matter what challenges arise. Attend the events and games to cheer for him and to show your support. “This teaches them good life skills, and that’s what you want from an activity,” Braunreiter says. “This teaches them about work ethic and helps them to mature.” v Kim Seidel has two active daughters, and often faces the challenge of whether to push or back away as their mother.

Minimizing Stress and Fear During Hurricanes and Evacuations Parents who live in hurricane-prone regions have a laundry list of worries during late summer. Insurance payment: check. Generator fuel: check. Non-perishable food: check. Often overlooked—or at least, treated lightly—are the needs of our young children during the approach of a storm. For parents living along the Gulf Coast in Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Alabama, and Florida—or in the coastal areas of the Southeast, such as the coasts of Georgia or the Carolinas—the fear of storms can be very real. Experts believe, however, that parents can help minimize anxiety when aware and tuned-in to their children. Traci Dubuisson, mom from Metairie, Louisiana, says her daughter was too young to remember the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

“My daughter was only two years old when Katrina hit, so she was pretty much oblivious,” said Dubuisson, whose home survived, but was located just a short drive away from the infamous 17th Street Canal breach in New Orleans. “She just loved being with family, especially her cousins, and it didn’t seem to matter to her where we were,” said Dubuisson.

For some, the fear of storms can be very real! Now that she is older, the girl—now aged ten—understands what a storm can mean for people in its path. “Her biggest fear is definitely flooding,” said Dubuisson, expressing a sentiment that’s common among children in low-lying coastal areas. “She knows enough about what happened in Katrina to know

that the flood waters caused so much destruction. She would [now] worry about our house and her Grammy’s house being destroyed,” explained Dubuisson.

Talking to children may help to alleviate stress before a storm! Marcia C. Barksdale, LPC, provider of counseling services through Islands Counseling in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, says that talking to children may help alleviate some stress before and during a storm. “Talk about what is going to happen, whether it is evacuating or preparations for staying. Knowledge lessens the fear,” said Barksdale. Continued on page 33 ItsYourMagazine.com • EC Parent Magazine Sept+Oct 2013 • 13

“I’ve always wanted to learn how to dance! It’s been a very enjoyable experience!” Michelle Patterson

“I wanted to dance at my wedding, and thanks to Luann and her patient staff at Fred Astaire, I did!” Jane Weston

Fred Astaire Dance Studio has been teaching the Emerald Coast to dance for nearly 30 years! Ft. Walton Beach native Luann Pulliam, a graduate of Ft. Walton Beach High School, always wanted to be a dancer. She even studied at Julliard in New York, returning to her homeon the coast shortly after. Upon meeting and later marrying her dance partner, she quickly made a name for herself as well as for her home town. Pulliam is a former 10 time Fred Astaire National Champion, 4 time world champion, and has even danced for the Queen of England.

For nearly 30 years now, the Ft. Walton Beach Fred Astaire Dance Studio has been ranked one of the top dance studios in the country, competing with studios in much larger cities such as New York and Chicago. Pulliam’s love of dance and professionalism are the driving force behind training and developing the former United States and World Cabaret Champions Eric Luna and Georgia Ambarian, the current United States and World Champion Cabaret couple

Kimalee Piedad and Justin Guilmette, and also the current World Mambo Champions Ronald and Katie Guillen. “Teaching is our passion at Fred Astaire,” says Pulliam. “Whether you want to learn to social dance, dance for an upcoming event, or even just learn to dance because you have always wanted to, The Ft. Walton Beach Fred Astaire Dance Studio is the only place on the Emerald Coast for you!” v

The

FamilyChatter Challenge

BY ROB WILLIAMS

Years ago, as I was about to become a new father, my mother gave me one particular word of advice that has always stuck with me: “Eat at the dinner table as often as possible.” This section is dedicated to my mother—whose advice at the time seemed like such a simple “no-brainer.” Nevertheless, as time went on (and our lives began to get scary busy), I realized that her words of wisdom were starting to look more like a challenge than simple advice. My wife and I decided to accept her challenge and do our best to carry on the “simple” timehonored tradition of eating dinner at the family table. So how have

we done? Well, I have to admit that sometimes our family calendar blows away any and all attempts of establishing a “normal” dinner time and routine. In fact, just a few weeks ago, as the family all sat down for dinner, it dawned on my wife and me that it was nearing 9:00 at night! Was it a little later than normal? Sure, but we still took the time to talk to each other about our day and ask a few probing questions like the ones on this page. Take the challenge and try them at your dinner table. Enjoy!

Proper Behavior

That’s Good to Know! Information You Can Use! This Edition:

Halloween Safety Trick-or-treating is meant to be fun for children of all ages. As parents, there are a number of steps you can take to ensure that your child not only enjoys going door-to-door, but also is safe while doing so. Below are some helpful things to remember.

Parent or Buddy

Some kids are focused on “tricks” more than “treats.” Make sure your child knows the difference between “funny” and “wrong.” Halloween is meant to be enjoyed by everyone. Their entertainment should not diminish someone else’s ability to enjoy a fun and safe Halloween.

Eat Before You Leave

Make sure your child has eaten a well-balanced meal before going out to trick-or-treat. Hungry children might be more tempted to eat their candy before bringing it home for you to check.

Strangers

Teach your kids never to get into a stranger’s car or talk to strangers, no matter what the person tells them. Explain to them that some adults are just bad people who might want to hurt them. Clarify that they should never go into someone’s house they don’t know— even haunted houses. Teach them to scream loudly if they ever feel threatened—and to run away as fast as they can to some place safe.

Street Smarts

Make sure your child knows how to cross a street properly. Teach them to always look both ways before crossing the street and only cross at corners or crosswalks. If you have younger children, teach them to hold onto the hand of someone older before crossing the street. Do everything you can to make Halloween a fun, safe and happy time for your kids so that it can continue to be enjoyed by generations to come. v

You might not remember trick-or-treating being anything but fun, but in some cities, it just isn’t safe to let kids wander the streets by themselves. Make sure an adult always accompanies them. If you’re not available, check to see if a friend or another family member can.

Know Their Route

If your child is going out alone with a friend, know the route they’ll be taking. Set rules for checking in with you every hour, by phone or in person. Communicate that they are not to deviate from their planned route so that you’ll know where they will be at all times.

Costumes

Help your young child choose a safe costume. Make sure they are able to easily move around in their costume, and that the eyeholes in any masks they might choose are large enough for good peripheral vision. If your child’s costume includes a prop, such as a sword, sticks or any other type of fighting weapon, take measures to ensure that the tips are not sharp enough to cause injury to themselves or anyone else.

People, Phone Numbers and Locations

If your child is planning to attend an activity, get the details. Know where this activity is taking place, who is hosting it, and how you can reach someone in charge if necessary. If they’re going to a friend’s house, introduce yourself to the parents before leaving when you drop them off. Communicate what time you expect your child to be home by. Tell them to call if they are not going to be home on time.

Be sure to remove the core. • Spread peanut butter smoothly across each apple slice. • Place 5-6 marshmallow teeth on top of the peanut butter on one apple slice. • Place the second apple slice on top of the marshmallows to form an Apple Smile.

These are great snacks to make with little children. They’re easy to make and healthy to eat!

Candy Corn Marshmallow Ghosts INGREDIENTS • Large Marshmallows • Melting Chocolate in Orange and Yellow • Black Decorating Gel • Waxed Paper DIRECTIONS • Lay down wax paper to cover the entire work area. • Heat the melting chocolate in the microwave according to the directions on the package.* • Dip the marshmallow in orange melting chocolate and place on waxed paper. Allow the ghost to dry completely before dipping in yellow. • When the orange is completely dry, dip the ghost in yellow melting chocolate and place on waxed paper. Allow to dry. • Dot eyes onto ghosts with black decorating gel. * We found that adding a little bit of cooking oil makes the melting chocolate more manageable.

Terracotta Apple MATERIALS • 3 Inch Terracotta Pot and Saucer • Spray Primer • Red, Black, Brown and White Acrylic Paint • Paint Brushes-Large and Fine • White Glue, Glue gun or Epoxy • Thumb Tack • Artificial Leaves (from the floral section of the craft store) • Wire Cutter, File, or Dremel Tool INSTRUCTIONS • Spray the outsides of the pot and saucer with primer. • Using the large brush, paint the pot red. Repeat this step as necessary until the desired color and coverage is achieved. • Using the wire cutter, snip the metal part off of the thumbtack. File excess metal until smooth.* • Paint thumbtack “stem” brown. • Attach stem and flowers using your choice of glue. White glue or glue gun may be faster, but we suggest epoxy for a stronger hold (Follow directions on the package). • Paint front of “apple” with black and brown paint to look like a chalkboard. • Add ABCs and 123s or a teacher’s name as desired with fine paintbrush.

*Use a dremel tool, if you own one, instead of wire cutters and a file for step three.

Glow in the Dark Lantern MATERIALS (FOR ONE BALL) • Empty Glass Jar • Black Spray Paint • Glow Sticks • Scissors INSTRUCTIONS • Spray paint the lid of the jar black. • Crack and shake each glow stick vigorously so that it starts glowing. • Cut off each end off the glow stick. This can splatter a bit and get messy, so be sure to lay something down under the entire area that can get dirty. • Shake the contents of the glow stick into the jar. We used about 5 glow sticks to get the desired effect. • Close the lid of the jar and shake the contents to disperse evenly. • Turn off the lights and watch your lantern glow. Make multiple lanterns using different colors or experiment with mixing colors to see what happens. These make great Halloween decorations!

Cheesecloth Ghost MATERIALS • Approximately 24” x 36” Rectangle of Cheesecloth • Fabric Stiffener • (2) 20mm Googly Eyes • Black Felt • 20 oz. Plastic Water Bottle • (2) Pencils

*Use plenty of fabric stiffener to ensure that your ghost stands up straight and tall.

• • • • •

2 ½ Inch Styrofoam Ball Plastic Wrap A Large Crafting Bowl Glue Gun Decorating Supplies Such as Chain (plastic) and Pumpkins

INSTRUCTIONS • Poke pencils through the sides of the water bottle and position them as arms. Place a styrofoam ball on top of water bottle and then drape plastic wrap over entire form as shown in the small inset photo. • Drape dry cheesecloth over the form to decide on correct dimensions, and cut to size. Then pour a good amount of fabric stiffener in the bottom of the large bowl and place cheesecloth in the bowl. Massage stiffener throughout the entire length of cheesecloth. • Stretch out the cheesecloth and drape carefully over the mold. Allow to dry overnight. • Once dry, carefully remove ghost from its form. • Use the glue gun to adhere eyes, mouth, chains and decorations (We suggest using plastic chain and light decorations, as heavy things will cause the form to collapse).

Candy Corn Wreath MATERIALS • 10 Inch Styrofoam Wreath • Large Bristle Brush • Black Acrylic Paint • Glue Gun • Candy Corns • Orange Ribbon DIRECTIONS • Using the large bristle brush, paint the entire surface of the wreath with black acrylic paint by working the paint into the porous texture of the wreath. • Allow to dry overnight. • Glue candy corns onto wreath using the glue gun. Avoid laying down too much glue at once—work in short segments at a time. Alternate candy corn row by row as shown. • Allow all the glue to dry. • Tie an orange bow onto wreath and hang in desired location. Hang in a dry location—candy corn tends to break down fairly quick when it’s exposed to moisture.

Teach Your Kids Something New!

This Edition: B y K i m S e i d e l

HEALTHYHABITS Help Your Children Discover the Importance of Establishing Healthy Habits in Their Lives! Like an air captain in control of a flight, parents are the pilots of their families. “The flight of that airplane is, I believe, the ideal metaphor for family life,” writes Covey in his book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Families. “It doesn’t make any difference if we are off target or even if our family is a mess. The hope lies in the vision and in the plan and in the courage to keep coming back time and time again.”

“These aren’t quick-fixes; they’re habits.” Incorporating the seven habits of successful families begins with a commitment to do so, says Patti Correll-Syring, a parent educator. Covey acknowledges that each family is unique. “That means there’s no one correct way of beginning or approaching the use of the habits,” Correll-Syring says. “We as parents know our families unlike anyone else. We need to know and respect our own unique family situation, as well as the individuals within that system.” Following are the basics of the seven habits and some ideas to incorporate them into your family. As you read about the qualities of productive families below, keep in mind these aren’t “quick fixes” but “habits”—established patterns of thinking and acting that all successful families have in common.

Habit One: Be Proactive Each family and its members hold responsibility for their choices. They have the freedom to choose based on principles and values rather than on moods or conditions.

In other words, effective families operate from the “inside-out.” They don’t rely on their emotions or society to dictate their beliefs and actions. To be proactive, start building an emotional bank account, rather than withdrawing from it. Families make withdrawals by putting members down, acting rude, criticizing, complaining, holding grudges and other negative behaviors. Make deposits by being kind, apologizing, being loyal to your family even when they’re not with you, forgiving and making and keeping promises. It’s said that for every withdrawal, three deposits are needed to rebuild the depleted emotional bank account.

Habit Two: Begin with the End in Mind Happy families shape their futures by creating a mental vision and purpose for any project, no matter the size. Covey advocates writing a family mission statement to help people define their destination as a family. It’s vital to seek input from each member about values and goals. Parents can make this process fun for their children. Go over your family’s mission about once a year to make any needed changes. Hang your family’s statement where everyone can see it daily, such as in the kitchen or living room.

Habit Three: Put First Things First Organize family life around top priorities, rather than being at the mercy of outside forces. Two powerful ways are to schedule weekly family activities and one-on-one bonding times with a parent and a child, as well as husband and wife dates. “From the time our first child was born, we implemented this habit—without knowing about it,” says Patti, the mother of two daughters. “At the root of this habit is to start with the assumption that family time is non-negotiable.” This involves being flexible about your work, volunteer and hobby time to improve your family life. Habit Four: Think “Win-Win” Move from a “me” to a “we” attitude. At the center of a “win-win” attitude is an abundance mentality, meaning that there is more than enough to go around for everybody. This requires working as a team. There is power in older children helping younger siblings to ride a bike, toilet train, practice math or whatever they’re learning at the time. Desire what’s best for everyone involved—though it may not always be a well-received decision. “Parenting is not about being popular and giving in to every child’s whim and desire,” Covey says. “It’s about making decisions that truly are win-win—however they may appear to the child at the time.”

Habit Five: Seek First to Understand— Then Be Understood Challenging areas found within the family can be transformed if people take the time to understand one another. This involves letting go of the need to be heard and listen first. The need to judge and to control can be left at the doorstep to make way for more understanding.

Focus on positive parenting! Along with practicing genuine listening and understanding, learn about what’s happening physically, mentally, and emotionally at your child’s age and stage. This leads to more positive parenting, which benefits the entire family.

Habit Six: Synergize Synergy is the “magic” that occurs when everyone harmoniously works together. Synergy is not just teamwork or cooperation. “Synergy is creative teamwork, creative cooperation,” Covey says. “Something new is created that was not there before.” The key to creating synergy in your family life is to show respect, value and celebrate the differences in each person.

Habit Seven: Sharpen the Saw Every effective family takes the time to renew itself in what Covey describes as the “four key areas of life”—physical, social, mental and spiritual. Take time for personal and family renewal in those areas. Among the careers, chores, and other responsibilities, it’s very easy to get sidetracked from fun and relaxation. Sharing family activities and one-on-one times, creating traditions, celebrating birthdays and holidays and eating dinner together are wonderful ways to “sharpen the saw.” “To those who would say, ‘We don’t have time to do these things’, I would say, ‘You don’t have time not to,’” Covey says. “The key is to plan ahead and be strong.” v Kim Seidel is the mother of two daughters, ages 15 and 11.

“Children are observant, and what they hear from their peers is typically worse than anything a parent will tell them.” Surrounding children with favorite and familiar things can help alleviate anxiety during uncertain times. “Always bring a treasured stuffed animal or toy,” said Barksdale. “Let the child pack a special small box...let that be their task to keep them occupied and to assure that should the worst happen, their treasures are with them...all of this is comforting when away from home.” Dubuisson relaxes her daughter during storm evacuations by bringing comfort items and giving her child something positive to look forward to. “We bring her pillow and her favorite stuffed animals,” said Dubuisson. “Evacuation usually means a trip to visit her cousins, which she enjoys, so we focus more on that than the approaching storm.” Alabama mom Chris Begg now lives in Birmingham, but has owned property in the storm-prone regions of both Louisiana and Mississippi; she is no stranger to storm evacuations. For Begg, assuring children of the safety of their dogs, cats, birds, goldfish, hamsters, or other beloved animals is important.

Surrounding children with favorite and familiar things can help alleviate anxiety during uncertain times! “Kids worry about pets,” said Begg. “Plan to evacuate with animals...make sure you own an appropriate pet carrier.” Remembering to check early for pet-friendly hotels in advance of an evacuation is critical; having plans for pets that can be clearly outlined for children can bring solace.

Watching televised news updates about the storm or listening to radio broadcasts is part of being a wise and informed adult. However, exposure to news coverage may be detrimental for children.

“Absolutely keep kids away from TV during broadcasts while the storm is occurring and after, if it is destructive,” suggested Barksdale. “A child can suffer from nightmares just from hearing parents or commentators talking about the destruction.” How do parents know when a child is not dealing well with storm stress? The National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN), funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, assists parents in helping kids cope with hurricane fear or loss. The website at nctsn.org provides guidelines for parenting after natural disasters, with specific instructions for hurricanes. Most important post-storm, however, is being attuned to what is “normal” for your child. “Stress usually presents in children by way of nightmares, bedwetting, and misbehavior, when these were not present previously, “ said Barksdale. “It can also present in clinginess, inability to concentrate, a drop in grades, and disinterest in activities.” Although taxing for parents who may be dealing with their own hurricane-related problems, focusing on any changes in the child in a supportive way is more critical than ever. “Patience, love, and checking on their own reactions to the stress are the first response,” said Barksdale. “When all else fails—and the situation is not improving with time—checking with a professional counselor is a good idea.” Children can sometimes place magical value on special belongings, such as blankets or books. Should a storm cause damage, it is important to acknowledge any feelings of loss, but also to emphasize that people are the true treasures. Barksdale has personal experience with this situation. “After Katrina, my six-year-old niece, while walking through my totally decimated house, repeatedly told me how lucky I was to have found one of her princess tea cups,” said Barksdale. “I readily agreed with her in the midst of the ruins of my house, because my treasure was standing beside me.” v

Kara Martinez Bachman is a freelance writer and editor. She is fortunate that her ten-year-old daughter has no memory of Hurricane Katrina, and that her son--aged 13--remembers it as being similar to “a really long camping trip.” ItsYourMagazine.com • EC Parent Magazine Sept+Oct 2013 • 33

Getting Fired Up! Make it Silly!

Fired Up—Paint Your Own Pottery—Art a la Carte Children love art, yet most adults would rather eat a crayon than use one. Is it because we think our creations would be met with a roll of the eyes or maybe even contemptuous laughing? Maybe it’s because we remember that B-minus on our report cards with the teacher’s comment, “needs improvement.” Or, have we just gotten lazy and don’t like to get messy or make a mess? “Take heart!” encourages Oclla Marie Oliver, owner of Fired Up, Paint Your Own Pottery Studio. “Both experienced artist and artistically challenged can create something VERY special here . . . without anyone laughing or being graded on following instructions,” states Oliver. Here’s how it works: Choose from over 200 styles of bisque (unglazed pottery)—anything from a kitchen tile, to a dolphin sculpture, garden gnome, coffee cup, plate, bowl, or giant serving platter. Then select your colors and supplies (brushes, sponges, stencils, stamps) and get creative at one of the many tables. You design and decorate your piece while chatting, sipping coffee (or bring your own favorite beverage), and listening to music. Helpful staff are on hand to get you started and offer tips and encouragement. “Inspiration can come from a number of different sources,” adds Oliver. “It can be

your dining room wallpaper, a favorite saying or painting, a sports team logo, or just a personal sentiment on a piece for a wedding, birthday, or newborn’s hand and/or footprints. We also have lots of idea books in the studio,” she adds.

Choose your piece. Choose your color. Then get creative ! Once you’ve completed your masterpiece, the staff applies the clear glaze, then fires it in one of the kilns on premise. When you pick up your finished piece a few days later, it is dishwasher, microwave, and food safe. “This is a wonderful activity for families, friends, and even dates,” Oliver explains. “The relaxing eclectic atmosphere of the studio encourages all ages to explore the artist within, while spending quality time with loved ones.” Fired Up also loves to party, according to Oliver. “Children’s birthdays, bridal and baby showers, office parties, church and school outings . . . you name it, we’ll throw a party!” The contemporary ceramic studio concept has taken both coasts by storm. Well-known

celebrities even indulge in the industry. Gabrielle Cartereis, talk show host and former 90210 actress, owns her own studio. So does Josie Bisset of “Melrose Place.” The cast of “Friends,” Demi Moore’s family, as well as Arnold Schwarzenegger’s are all frequent visitors painting at their studios. A recent article in New York Newsday said this about the trend: “A great substitute for the boring business lunch . . . it’s a great way to entertain a client,” “you can do all the painting and designing without having to worry about the technical aspects of making ceramics,” and “if your date is a disaster, at least you get a pot out of it!” Ceramic pieces range in price from $8 to $80 and your studio time is included in the price as well as all glazes, supplies, and firing. Happy painting, future artists!!! v
