The Hawaiian Islands
FEEL THE HISTORY Hawai‘i became the USA’s 50th state in 1959, but its history goes back some 1500 years when Polynesians from the Marquesas Islands near Tahiti miraculously sailed more than 3,200km in canoes, with only stars as their guide. They first set foot on the largest and most southern of the Hawaiian Islands, Hawai‘i Island. Visit the Bishop Museum (O‘ahu) to find out more. Visit Bishop Museum, the Pacific’s leading natural and cultural hitory collection. In the planetarium, learn how voyagers navigated using the stars. Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) / Tor Johnson
UNIQUE SPECIES The relative isolation of the Hawaiian Islands (more than 3,000km from the nearest continent) has led to the evolution of plants and animals that are not found anywhere else on the planet. Endemic Hawaiian species include the Nēnē (Hawaiian goose), Hawaiian hawk, Laysan albatross, Hawaiian monk seal, Hawaiian hoary bat and the rare Haleakalā silversword (a member of the daisy family). Today there are some 48 species of birds unique to the Hawaiian Islands (30 of which are endangered); 2,600 species of native flora (30 percent are endangered); and, of the 450 reef fish inhabiting Hawaiian waters, more than 120 are endemic to Hawai‘i. Visit McBryde Garden (Kaua‘i) to see rare native flora; Waikīkī Aquarium (O‘ahu) to view Hawaiian monk seals and native marine species; and Honolulu Zoo (O‘ahu) for a selection of bird species unique to Hawai‘i.
SACRED LAWS Kapu (revered traditions) were of the utmost importance in ancient Hawaiian culture and the breaking of kapu was punishable by death. This fate could only be avoided if the kapu-breaker was able to seek sanctuary in a pu‘uhonuā (sacred refuge). Once there, a ceremony of absolution would free the law-breaker to return to society. Visit Pu‘uhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park (Hawai‘i Island) and feel the spirit of peace and forgiveness that continues to surround and bless this special place.

BE TOUCHED BY HAWAI‘I’S HEART & SOUL ALOHA is a word that conveys deep feelings and emotion. It can mean ‘greetings’ or ‘goodbye’ in addition to ‘love’, ‘compassion’, ‘loved one’ and ‘to love’. THE FLOWER LEI The giving of a flower lei conveys the same meaning as the word aloha. The ancient Hawaiians used feathers, human hair and shells, while the modern lei is made of fresh flowers, with white ginger and orchids a popular choice. Flowered leis (pronounced “lays”) are reserved for special occasions such as weddings, birthdays, graduations or job promotions. Wear one, and locals will offer you a “congratulations”. HULA is a uniquely Hawaiian dance accompanied by chant or song that preserves the stories, traditions and culture of Hawai‘i. Hula auana (modern hula) is danced to western-influenced music and features a more fluid style. Hula kahiko (ancient hula) is danced to dramatic chants and percussion with more traditional costumes. Hula is performed throughout the islands at festivals, competitions, hotels and resorts. The Merrie Monarch Festival (March - April) in Hilo on Hawai‘i Island is the world’s premier hula competition. Take a free lesson at the Royal Hawaiian Center on O‘ahu. Hula dancer, Amanda Weinstein. Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) / Tor Johnson
The Royal Hawaiian Center on Kalakaua Avenue in the heart of Waikīkī (on the island of O‘ahu) offers complimentary lei-making classes, Monday to Saturday, from 1-2pm (Level 1, Building A). Seasonal flowers, string and lei needles are provided. Classes are limited to 25 participants so arrive early.

The Hawaiian people call themselves keiki o ka ‘aina (“CHILDREN OF THE LAND”) and maka’ainana (“eyes of the land”). Embodying a deep, spiritual connection to the land and sea, they believe that nature provides and, in return, every man, woman and child must watch over nature.

BE TEMPTED From dawn until the wee hours, Hawai‘i offers visitors a dizzying menu of culinary delights to tantalize the taste buds … FUSION In 1991, 12 Hawai‘i-based chefs established ‘Hawaii Regional Cuisine’, a culinary movement that inventively blends Hawai‘i’s diverse ethnic flavours with the freshest island ingredients, such as cattle raised on lush Hawai‘i Island pastures, fruit and vegetables grown in Maui’s rich volcanic soil and some of the best-quality fish in the world from local Hawaiian waters. SUSTAINABLE
GO LOCAL
Mālama ʻĀina (caring for the land) is a belief that’s deeply rooted in Hawaiian culture. In the days of Hawaiian chiefs, land was divided into ahupua‘a (mini ecosystems) and each parcel was a self-contained land management system in which farmland, fresh water and ocean resources were carefully maintained. Today, the renewed interest in sustainable agriculture is yielding delicious surprises throughout the state – in tiny tucked-away cafes to sophisticated restaurants. Working-farm tours are now available to visitors and highquality produce markets are found throughout the islands.
Hawaiians love to eat and the islands offer a variety of comfort foods in a wide range of off-thebeaten path locations. Local palates have been influenced by generations of immigrants from around the globe so it’s not surprising that Hawai‘i is a melting pot of countless ethnic specialties and some local delicacies that are more-or-less exclusive to Hawai‘i. In particular, discover many enticing and creative variations on traditional American, Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Korean, Polynesian and Portuguese dishes. By the way…the Hawaiian word for “delicious” is “ono”.
Plate Lunch two scoops of rice, macaroni salad and everything from Kalua pork to Korean barbecue, chicken katsu, beef teriyaki and mahimahi (fish). Pupu (appetizers) - a wide range of creative platters are available - from poke (salad) to sushi. Loco moco – especially for big appetites, comprising hamburger steak and egg over rice, covered in gravy. Shave ice - finely shaved snow cones in exotic flavours, with a choice of ice cream or azuki (red) beans underneath. Malasada – a hot, sweet Portuguese doughnut.

The Honolulu Fish Auction is based on the famous Tokyo fish auction, where large fish are sold individually. In most other parts of the world, fish are sold to wholesalers who generally control pricing. However, the United Fishing Agency in Honolulu operates on a different business model which ensures individual fishermen receive fair prices. In return, buyers representing retailers, wholesalers and restaurants gain access to the freshest fish. Bidding is conducted in an open, competitive forum, with higher-quality fish scoring higher prices. Fishermen are paid the same day for their catch. It’s an innovative system that has been operating since 1952. Fresh fish at the Honolulu Fish Auction. Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) / Joe Solem

Yokohama Bay - this curvy beach with turquoise waters is a great spot to sunbathe and watch surfers and dolphins. Nearby Ka‘ena Point offers a hiking trail with rewarding ocean views.
‘Ehukai Beach (Banzai Pipeline) - powerful waves break over a sharp reef, making this one of the world’s most dangerous surf spots (and one of the venues for the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing from November to December).
Sunset Beach - from ‘Ehukai (Banzai Pipeline) to Sunset Point, and encompassing a dozen different reef breaks, this 3km beach is considered the longest stretch of ride-able
WINDWARD (EAST) COAST BEACHES
Makaha Beach - the best surfing on the west coast. Beware of the sloping sand beachhead that can cause backwash and catch unsuspecting visitors off guard.
NORTH SHORE BEACHES
Kawela Bay/Turtle Bay - protected from large waves and surf, this beach is one of the island’s best places to snorkel, with honu (green sea turtle) sometimes spotted.
LEEWARD (WEST) COAST BEACHES
SOUTH SHORE BEACHES Waikīkī Beach - Duke Kahanamoku Statue welcomes visitors to one of the world’s most popular beaches. Thanks to its wave break, this is one of the best places in Hawai‘i for beginners to try surfing and canoe paddling. Waimānalo Beach - the 6.5km stretch of sand faces calm, clear waters. Perfect for body-boarding and body-surfing.
Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) / Tor Johnson
Ala Moana Beach Park & Magic Island - just west of Waikīkī, this 0.8km stretch is protected by a reef. Magic Island peninsula extends from the beach with seawalls and a shallow lagoon. Perfect for keiki (children). Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve - a stunning bay sitting between two dormant volcanic craters with clear, shallow waters and a multitude of marine life. One of the best places to snorkel on O‘ahu. Gear rental is available onsite.
Lanikai Beach - constantly ranked among the best in the world with sparkling sand, calm waters and two mini islands called the Mokuluas (locally referred to as “Moks”) that can be reached via kayak. Kualoa Regional Park - opposite Kualoa Ranch, this beautiful beach offers spectacular views down the east coast.

Sandy Beach - a favourite of O‘ahu-born President Barack Obama. The massive shore break can be dangerous so body-surf at your own risk.

PEARL HARBOR SPOTLIGHT WHAT IS IT? Five historic sites honouring the events occurring at this National Historic Landmark in 1941 during WWII.
WHERE IS IT? Central Oahu, approximately 30 minutes’ drive from Waikīkī.
WEBSITE nps.gov/valr/index.htm
PEARL HARBOR COMPRISES FIVE HISTORIC SITES: USS ARIZONA MEMORIAL BATTLESHIP MISSOURI At 8.06am on 7 December 1941, the USS MEMORIAL Arizona was hit by an 800-kilogram armourpiercing bomb. The catastrophic explosion that resulted sank the massive battleship in nine minutes, killing 1,177 crewmen. Today, it is possible to visit the USS Arizona Memorial to learn about this historic attack and pay respects to the brave soldiers who fell that day. Begin at the Visitor Center and then take a boat-shuttle to the USS Arizona Memorial a floating memorial built over the sunken hull of the Battleship USS Arizona.
General Macarthur accepted the unconditional Japanese surrender that ended WWII on 2 September 1945 on the Surrender Deck of the Battleship Missouri. Now located at Pearl Harbor’s historic Battleship Row, the massive “Mighty Mo” is a living museum, with exhibits spanning three wars and five decades of service. Explore the decks of this 54,000-tonne battleship, three football fields long and 20 storeys tall. Take a tour and get special access to restricted areas.
USS BOWFIN SUBMARINE MUSEUM & PARK Pearl Harbor, named for the pearl oysters once harvested within its seas, is the largest natural harbour in Hawai‘i, a World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument and the only naval base in the United States to be designated a National Historical Landmark.

The devastating aerial attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 resulted in 2,390 dead and hundreds wounded, and drove the United States into World War II. The Pearl Harbor historic sites honour this history-changing event.

The USS Bowfin took part in the war in the Pacific during World War II. Today, visitors can explore the 3,000 square metre submarine museum to learn about the battle under the seas and tour the interactive gun and torpedo exhibits. Step below deck on this authentic submarine, and tour the torpedo room, engine room and claustrophobic sleeping quarters.
PACIFIC AVIATION MUSEUM
Located within former WWII aeroplane hangars on Pearl Harbor’s Ford Island, the Pacific Aviation Museum is an immersive aviation exhibition complete with interactive simulators and displays showcasing the stories behind authentic WWII fighter planes and bombers.
USS OKLAHOMA MEMORIAL
Dedicated on 7 December 2007, the USS Oklahoma Memorial honours the 429 crewmen who lost their lives on this warship in the Pearl Harbor attack. Approximately nine torpedoes hit the vessel, capsizing the 31,000-tonne battleship in only 12 minutes. Some crewmen were trapped in compartments below deck after the ship capsized. They used hammers and wrenches to signal to rescue crews on the surface and two days after the attack, 32 men were rescued from the overturned hull of the Oklahoma.

Lather up with sunscreen, put on sunglasses and a hat, and head down to world-famous Waikīkī Beach. If you have kids in tow, consider a visit to Waikiki Aquarium or Honolulu Zoo.

The Hawaiian Islands: Cruising
CRUISE HAWAI‘I Cruising is an extremely attractive option for travellers of all ages - delivering four contrasting Hawaiian island experiences from the convenience of one floating resort.
CRUISE HAWAI‘I MEANS: • no unpacking and re-packing as you tour the islands • meals are included in the ‘all-inclusive’ price • kids’ and teens’ clubs keep the younger members of the family occupied between ports of call • great vantage points for whale-watching (December-April) and viewing the more inaccessible scenic highlights such as the dramatic Nāpali Coast of Kaua‘i.
Aloha
One cruise ship, Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pride of America, is located in Hawai’i yearround. Others visit for part of the year. Speciality, short-duration cruises also operate offering a particular focus such as golfing, whale-watching and dinner cruising. A range of itineraries are available. The Pride of America, for example, offers a seven-night inter-Hawaiian-island itinerary, departing Honolulu on O‘ahu every Saturday, and cruising to Maui, Hawai‘i Island and Kaua‘i where the ship spends two full days in port on each island.
Say to 7 days in paradise
HAWAI‘I CRUISE ROAD TEST The Mead Family from Sydney “There is no doubt in my mind that cruise is a great way to see the Hawaiian Islands. We boarded in Honolulu and sailed at night, exploring four port stops during the day – Hilo and Kona on Hawai‘i Island, and the islands of Kaua‘i and Maui. We could do as much or as little as we wanted… and we did both. Some days were filled with fun shore excursions and action-packed adventures such as flying over an active volcano near Hilo, snorkelling off Kona and mountain tubing in Kaua‘i. Other days we lazed by the ship’s pool, taking in poolside entertainment and activities such as pool volleyball, basketball and table tennis. The ‘Freestyle Dining’ option meant we could eat whenever and wherever we wanted - from buffet-style cafes to fine-dining
restaurants. We had five restaurant options for each meal that were all included in our fare and the meals were delicious. Our kids loved the free Kid’s Club onboard and got to hang out with new friends and participate in fun night-time activities such as the ‘Spy Night’ and ‘Pirate Treasure Hunt’. Each evening there were also shows on offer - from cover bands to musical theatre and comedy. It was a totally fun-filled holiday that will be a treasured memory for my family.” - Nicki Mead
Fall in love with Hawaii on board the pride of America, Where the spirit of Aloha is very much a part of your day. It goes without saying that Hawaii is full of amazing places to explore. Peak seasons: June-August (Hawaiian summer and long summer break for schools/universities in mainland USA); mid-December to mid-January (encompassing Christmas and New Year); April and October (Australian and New Zealand school holidays). Accommodation may be more difficult to secure in peak seasons so book early.

The temperature fluctuates very little. Summer (May-Oct) has an average daytime temperature at sea level of 29.4ºC while the equivalent in winter (Nov-Apr) is 25.6ºC. Temperatures at night are approximately 12ºC lower. November to March are the wettest months but the rain tends to be localised with sunny spots usually found somewhere else on each island. Long periods of rain are uncommon. During summer showers are less frequent, often lasting only a few minutes. Average temperatures across Hawai‘i from January - December
FLIGHTS FROM AUSTRALIA Direct services to Hawai‘i depart from Sydney (Hawaiian Airlines, Jetstar and Qantas), Brisbane (Hawaiian Airlines) and Melbourne (Jetstar). These services arrive into Honolulu International Airport on the island of O‘ahu. Travellers from other Australian states should arrange domestic flights to connect in Sydney, Brisbane or Melbourne. Each international carrier has a domestic airline partnership which will allow luggage to be checked through from the domestic point of embarkation to Honolulu. LOCAL TRANSPORT
HIRE CARS
• On O‘ahu, use ‘The Bus’ to get around (visit thebus.org).
Australian travellers do not require an international driver’s licence as major car hire companies accept an Australian licence. In some cases drivers will need to be more than 25 years of age and in possession of a major credit card. It’s best to pre-arrange car hire prior to leaving Australia to avoid disappointment.
• With little to no public transport on neighbouring islands, a hire car (or combination of hire car and tours) is recommended. • A ferry operates daily to/from Lāhainā (Maui) to Moloka‘i (90 minute trip) and Lāna‘i (60 minute trip). •
Taxis are available at airports and key tourist spots. Credit cards are not commonly accepted and long taxi rides are costly. Taxis charge approximately US$45 for the 30-minute journey from Honolulu International Airport to Waikīkī.
•
In key tourist spots, shuttles operate between airports and hotels/resorts, and between resorts and nearby shopping precincts. Some are free of charge and others incur a small fee (check with your hotel/resort for details).
•
Helicopter tours are a great way to see the particularly scenic spots such as Waimea Canyon (Kaua‘i) and inaccessible areas such as the Nāpali Coast (Kaua‘i).
• Passenger submarines are a novel, comfortable and safe way to explore the wonders of Hawai‘i’s tropical waters. • Motorcycles, mopeds and bicycles are available for hire.
Rental cars offer real value as they provide the freedom and flexibility to truly experience what each island has to offer. Remember to drive on the right-hand side of the road. You’ll find that most major roads are well maintained. Please ‘drive with aloha’ (slowly and without the horn as it’s considered rude) and observe speed limits. Avoid tailgating and the local rule for single-lane bridges is to yield to on-coming traffic. However, if you’re the on-coming traffic and there is a line waiting on the other side, stop and let your neighbours cross.
ETIQUETTE TIPS
Respect property marked with kapu (‘off limits’). Remember to mālama kai (respect plants and animals). Make sure to mālama ‘aīna (respect the land) by staying on trails and not disturbing plants. Remove shoes when entering private homes and selected B&Bs. Properly dispose of opala (rubbish). Observe smoke-free laws which prohibit smoking in enclosed public areas.

WATER SAFETY
SUN SAFETY
Hawai‘i’s ocean is beautiful, but it can also be dangerous. Strong, hidden currents can overpower even experienced swimmers and standing on rocky outcrops can be dangerous due to sudden, powerful rogue waves. Conditions in the water constantly change. Remember: • waves come in sets and conditions can be calm for up to 20 mins between dangerous sets of waves • swim only where lifeguards are on duty • do not fight a rip current (keep calm, float and wave for help, and go with the current to conserve energy) • use the buddy system – never swim alone and know your limits • when in doubt, don’t go out • nude bathing and nude sun-bathing is prohibited across Hawai‘i.
Apply sunscreen often (year-round). Wear sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat.
SNORKELLING SAFETY Check ocean conditions prior to snorkelling in order to avoid high surf and strong currents.
PRE-DEPARTURE SAFETY TIP
Leave a copy of your itinerary with family/ friends back home and carry emergency contact numbers with you.
HIKING SAFETY Hawai‘i is the perfect destination for hiking but some trails are for experienced hikers only. Make sure you do your research (degree of difficulty and length), let people know where you’re going, carry a mobile phone and hike with a partner. Visit http://hawaii.gov/dlnr/ brochures/HikingSafety.pdf/view
GENERAL SAFETY TIPS
Be as security-conscious as you would be at home. Don’t leave valuables unattended or in plain sight in a hire car, on the beach, or in restaurants or lobbies (lock them in the hotel/ room safe). Take only essential items to the beach and put keys/valuables in a waterproof bag and keep them with you. Carry little cash and leave extra cash/credit cards in the hotel safe. Make use of travellers’ cheques, ATM facilities and/or credit cards.
