Cirque Inextremiste, the renowned circus and acrobatic troupe direct from France, will present the high-flying EXIT for free!
Additionally, Circolombia – direct from Colombia – will light up the Spiegeltent nightly with its new show, Corazón, and–Shakespeare lovers beware–Matt Morgan and his band of miscreants returns with a new edition of the Bard on beer–Shotspeare
And, world-renowned comedian, Tig Notaro, holds court at Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre on September 16th.
That’s just a sample of the 500 performances we are presenting at more than 30 venues in and around Rochester. The Rochester Fringe Festival has grown into one of the largest of the 300+ fringe festivals in the world and is in the top 3 in the U.S., and we’re just getting started.

FRINGE FESTIVALS: A BRIEF HISTORY
In 1947, eight theatre groups showed up—uninvited—to perform at the newly established Edinburgh International Festival in Scotland. Alhough not listed in the official program, the groups performed anyway, at venues they found for themselves. The following year, a Scottish journalist coined the term “festival fringe” to describe these non-curated shows that began turning up annually.
The Edinburgh Fringe is now the largest arts festival in the world: it breaks records year after year for performances, venues, audiences, and ticket sales. With more than 50,000 performances of 3,841 shows in 323 venues in 2019, the breadth and diversity of talent offered were astounding. Today, there are more
than 300 Fringe festivals worldwide, with nearly 50 in the United States alone. The Rochester Fringe Festival was the first in Upstate New York and is now the third largest in the nation.
What is a Fringe Festival?
The U.S. Association of Fringe Festivals agrees on the following definition:
Performing arts-focused: Fringes are a performing arts smorgasbord that typically includes theater, comedy, dance, music, spoken word, and the like. Some—like Rochester’s Fringe— include film and visual arts as well.
Uncensored: No one gets too fussy about swearing or nudity, but squeakyclean content isn’t discouraged either.
ABOUT ROCHESTER FRINGE
Set-Up & Organization
Rochester is based on the Edinburgh model, in that the vast majority of shows are curated by the venues themselves. Like Philly Fringe, we are a bifurcated festival. That means:
One part Fringe-curated: the Fringe hosts headline events, including everything in the Spiegeltent, Spiegelgarden, Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre, Street Beat at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, Friday & Saturday on the Fringe and Fringe Finale Weekend at Parcel 5.
One part venue-curated: The vast majority of the shows are curated by
the venues themselves, from artist applications submitted in the spring. Thirty venues present shows during Rochester Fringe.
History
Planning began back in 2008 with a small group of like-minded cultural organizations that grew into the current not-for-profit Rochester Fringe Festival. Since debuting in 2012, the Fringe has drawn more than a 670,000 visitors from all over the world to attend nearly 4,500 diverse performances and events. In fact, Rochester’s not-for-profit Fringe has become one of the largest and most successful Fringe festivals in the nation,
Low-entry participation: Fees are low for both audiences and artists. Show selection varies from festival to festival, but generally runs the gamut from amateur to professional.
Multi-everything: Lasting a few days to several weeks, Fringe festivals involve lots of people at multiple venues.
Rapid-fire: Typically, technical requirements (sets, lighting, etc.) are minimal and shows run an hour or less.
Original always: Fringes feature a wide array of original material because they are, by nature and design, highly attractive to those looking to be creative.
the largest multidisciplinary performing arts festival in New York State, and one of the region’s most anticipated festivals each year.
How do I participate?
On Stage: The artist online application process for presenting a Fringe show opens each spring at rochesterfringe.com.It is absolutely FREE to apply.
Off Stage: Become a Fringe volunteer (we know you want to) and sign up at rochesterfringe.com. We welcome the help. Not to mention, volunteers can qualify for a nifty t-shirt and free tickets. Win/win.

You love the Fringe. Why not keep it with you year-round? Located at One Fringe Place (across from Eastman Theatre, corner of Main & Gibbs) for the duration of the festival (September 12-23) with a pop-up at Parcel 5 (next to One East Ave.) for Friday & Saturday on the Fringe (Sept. 15 & 16) and Fringe Finale Weekend (Sept. 22 & 23). Lost & Found
Don’t panic! Anything turned into the Fringe will be held at the Fringe office until the end of the festival. Contact the Fringe admin team at info@ rochesterfringe.com or stop by the Info Booth at One Fringe Place (corner of Main & Gibbs) to check.
Parking
One Fringe Place is in downtown Rochester’s East End. Most venues are within walking distance of one another, which allows for one-time parking. Please check the map on page 111 prior to departure, however, as some of our venues are in satellite locations. The Fringe recommends one of the many lots and parking garages located near One Fringe Place (corner of Main & Gibbs). See map on page 110 for parking recommendations. Please note that the City of Rochester charges a flat fee of $7/car for all festival parking.
Bike Parking
We’re big fans of pedal pushers. Because the Fringe is a pedestrianfriendly event, it’s also an ideal venue for those traveling by bicycle. One Fringe Place is easily accessible from East Avenue with many bike racks and loops nearby. Traveling into the city from the ‘burbs? Throw your bike in the car, park in one of the many city side streets off East Avenue, and bike in from there. Rochester also now has bike-sharing locations downtown. As always, lock your bike and wear a helmet. Let’s not ruin your Fringe.
Venues
Speaking of venues, we have incredible ones in and around downtown Rochester. Experience them all. GO. For a list, see page 110. For a map, see page 111.

VISUAL ARTS
Tues., Sept. 12 through Sat, Sept. 23 8pm to 10pm ALL FREE
What does it mean to honor someone with a monument… and who should be honored in such a public way? Australian artist Craig Walsh brings us one answer to this question, challenging us to select three people from our community who deserve to be recognized—but who may never rise to public consciousness without his unique method of celebrating them. Walsh projects the living, moving faces of these three Rochesterians on tall trees, where wind and other elements give them dimension and animate them even further.
CRAIG WALSH, MONUMENTS leads us to reconsider the place that monuments hold in our communities and our lives.
Location to be determined at press time;
“The diaphanous compositions are practically immaterial and as fleeting as the autumn foliage ...the subjects are in constant motion. Even the smallest shifts in expression, rippling over hundreds of leaves, feel weighty.”
