“Music Director Ward Stare directed the orchestra in one of his most impassioned performances yet. It was his orchestra, without a doubt, as he led the musicians with a focus and fury that brought out the best in every section.”
Reflections from Leadership
-JANN NYFFELER, DEMOCRAT & CHRONICLE
FROM THE BOARD CHAIR AND PRESIDENT & CEO Dear RPO Friends,
Dear RPO Friends and Supporters, Welcome to our 2016-17 Annual Report. We are extremely pleased to celebrate a wonderful year artistically, financially, and through our meaningful community partnerships. First, we must express our thanks to the two years of great work by the RPO Board of Directors and Interim President and CEO Ralph Craviso, and Board Chairperson Jules L. Smith. At the conclusion of Ralph’s tenure in August 2017, we had achieved a balanced budget—the first in six years. The 2016-17 season also saw a 20% increase in ticket sales reflecting 10% more subscription revenue and 30% more single ticket revenue. Thanks to you, we also saw a 25% increase in year-over-year contributions, including a summer matching challenge campaign that exceeded its $200,000 goal. Music Director Ward Stare, along with Jeff Tyzik and Michael Butterman, built an appealing and eclectic season, attracting audiences across a wide spectrum through programs like our semistaged opera and popular film and video game concerts. And, thanks to our increased digital and social media footprint, we have been able to deepen our community interaction.
With strong community backing and a board and artistic leadership working in tandem, we are at a crucial and exciting point in our 95-year history. As members and good citizens of the Rochester community, we are committed to serving the entire region through music and engagement, and are serious about earning your support. RPO musicians are also Rochester community members. Each is committed to growing existing partnerships and creating novel collaborations. Stepping out of the large orchestra setting, they appear in small ensembles, one-to-one educational workshops, and—on their own time—volunteer to make a difference for various community causes. We have a robust and carefully thought-out plan for a path going forward. We count on the continuation and growth of our supporters, members, and subscribers—all of whom have experienced the transformative impact of the RPO—to join us on this path. Together, we will mold a dynamic and energetic future. “Where words fail, music speaks.” –Hans Christian Andersen
We entertain. We inspire. We educate. We prize our relationships with those who hear us at Kodak Hall and Hochstein as well as with those who experience the RPO in diverse community spaces, schools, and houses of worship throughout the greater Rochester area. Of last year’s more than 120 live concerts, nearly 50 brought us directly to you.

FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR
With appreciation,
INGRID A. STANLIS
CURTIS S. LONG
CHAIRPERSON OF THE BOARD
PRESIDENT & CEO
I am delighted to have the opportunity to look back on the 2016-17 season and share our marvelous year with you. There have been numerous highlights, but the American Music Festival represented the pinnacle of the season for me. As you know, Rochester has a rich tradition of showcasing American composers, thanks to influential musicians of the past such as Howard Hanson. The result was beyond what I could have imagined, and I am exceedingly proud. Our musicians really stepped up and knocked it out of the park. Once again, I was reminded of the orchestra’s flexibility, virtuosity and great sense of style in works by Diamond, Gershwin, Copland, Adams, Ives, Higdon and Barber. Beyond the festival, the thread of American music was woven throughout much of the regular season. We sprinkled in gems of rarely-performed American repertoire while paying tribute to great composers like Mahler, Shostakovich, Beethoven, Mozart and Brahms. Where else but with the RPO could you have experienced one of the Rochester’s favorite pianists, Jon Nakamatsu, opening our Philharmonics season with Rachmaninoff, and launching our Pops season with a reprise of his jazzy Gershwin performances? It was a delightful 10th anniversary celebration of the harmonia mundi collaborative CD that rose to #3 on the Billboard charts. Our guest soloists elated us with their artistry and communicative skills. We experienced the thrill of pianist Jeremy Denk, the elegance of violinist James Ehnes, and the gorgeous lyric soprano of Nicole Cabell. As always, it was a pleasure to welcome back Conductor Laureate Christopher Seaman to perform his beautifully refined Elgar and Beethoven.
For the first time in nearly ten years, the renowned Yo-Yo Ma returned to wow a sold-out crowd with the iconic Dvořák Cello Concerto. The evening was made even sweeter by ROCmusic Collaborative’s post-concert performance for Yo-Yo, during which he joined them onstage. You could see the thrill on their young faces. This exemplifies precisely what the RPO and the community can do—and be—together. The season’s grand finale ended with the appropriately grand, semi-staged version of Puccini’s La Bohème. A wonderful stage director and splendid singers made for a well-executed and equally well-received performance. Enthusiasm for the opera was palpable, which certainly bodes well for more concerts like this in the future. I am indebted to the musicians, our supporters and sponsors, our local, state, and federal funders, and my colleagues Jeff Tyzik and Michael Butterman. Most of all, I am grateful for your commitment to continue to grow the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra in our community. Thank you again, and see you with the RPO! Warmly,
WARD STARE MUSIC DIRECTOR

The Year in Pictures: In the fall of 2016, Music Director Ward Stare embarked on his first ever American Music Festival, celebrating such 20th-and 21st-century luminaries as Copland, Barber, Bernstein, Jennifer Higdon, Charles Ives, John Adams, Tobias Picker, John Williams and Rochester’s own David Diamond.
The dazzling lyric soprano and Eastman School alumna Nicole Cabell joined the RPO in Ravel’s gorgeous and evocative Shéhérazade. Cabell’s voice embodied the heroine and narrator of The Arabian Nights and brought this romantic song cycle to warm a cold Rochester January.
John Williams’ epic score to Raiders of the Lost Ark was brought to life by the RPO, matching the edgeof-the-seat roller coaster ride in the film presentation to a sell-out crowd.
Yo-Yo Ma was just “one of the orchestra” when he briefly joined the ROCmusic Collaborative “All Stars” cello section. The ensemble, conducted by Music Director Alexander Pena, was invited by the RPO to perform at the reception following Mr. Ma’s performance with the orchestra.
6
In December, we were thrilled to host renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma in an exclusive, one-time performance of the Dvořák Cello Concerto with Ward State and the RPO. The concert was completely sold out to subscribers eight months before the actual event.
Miller Center played host to our Season Launch party on September 14. Posing for the camera and enjoying the evening are RPO Board Chair Jules L. Smith, Esq. with his wife, Alex Northrup.
Six-time Grammy winner Amy Grant made her RPO debut in January, performing #1 hits like “Baby Baby,” “Better Than a Hallelujah,” “House of Love,” “Every Heartbeat,” and “Emmanuel” under the direction of renowned musician, arranger, composer, producer, and conductor David Hamilton.
RPO audiences were treated to a 40+ year journey of David Bowie’s innovative music featuring vocalist David Brighton, credited with being the world’s best Bowie impersonator. We welcomed back arranger/guest conductor Brent Havens plus a full rock band fronting the RPO.
The highly-anticipated appearance of vocalist Sutton Foster dazzled us in her RPO debut! Under Pops Conductor Jeff Tyzik, the twotime Tony award-winning Foster performed selections from some of her Broadway shows and two jazz/pop albums, as well as debuting a few new pieces.
In time for Valentine’s Day, our audiences were treated to Jeremy Denk’s performance of the passionate and thrillingly virtuosic Brahms Piano Concerto No. 1. The multifaceted Denk is one of the country’s foremost pianists, having received the 2013 MacArthur Fellowship, the 2014 Avery Fisher Prize, and Musical America’s 2014 Instrumentalist of the Year award.

The appreciation event for Maestro’s Circle donors was a truly beautiful evening in October at the Arbor Loft in downtown Rochester. At this “Pour & Pair” evening, guests mingled to music by RPO players, enjoyed hors d’oevres and a threecourse dinner plus dessert in a lovely fall-themed event.
Our Pops series finale brought “Women Rock,” a brand new show from Principal Pops Conductor Jeff Tyzik celebrating the power of women who changed rock and roll forever. Vocalists Cassidy Catanzaro and Shayna Steele (both pictured), and Katrina Dideriksen brought back the great music of Carole King, Tina Turner, Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin, and others paired with video footage projections of each iconic artist.
Puccini’s glorious opera, La Bohème, concluded our Philharmonics season with a flourish. The in-concert production featured the orchestra and cast onstage—with some costuming, props, and English supertitles. “If I had forgotten why this opera continues to be so popular, more than 120 years after its creation, the RPO’s performance was a reminder,” said CITY Newspaper. “The music was absolutely sumptuous—as full and vivid in orchestral color as I’ve heard from Stare and company all season.”
The Hot Sardines warmed things up in March with its modern take on a 1920s speakeasy sound. The eight-piece band, featuring powerhouse female lead vocalist Elizabeth Bougerol (and a tap dancer for added percussion), updated the hottest jazz of the 20s, 30s, and 40s for our 21st-century palate.
Our staff celebrated 100% donor participation to the RPO with a fun afternoon in June at Frontier Field with the Red Wings.
8
“Bugs Bunny at the Symphony” brought the timeless Loony Tunes classics like The Rabbit of Seville and What’s Opera, Doc? projected on the big screen, while the RPO performed the original live scores inspired by master composers. Bugs was joined by some new additions, the East Coast concert premiere of Long-Haired Hare, and two brand new Warner Bros. 3D animated shorts: Rabid Rider and Coyote Fall.
Grammy-winning Canadian violinist James Ehnes deftly put his signature on Beethoven’s sublime Violin Concerto with the RPO, creating what the Democrat and Chronicle called “a magical thing.” For contrast, Ehnes treated the audience to an affecting encore of the third movement of Bach’s Violin Sonata No. 3.
Van Cliburn-winning pianist and Rochester favorite Jon Nakamatsu served double duty for the RPO this season. Proving his diverse stylistic and technical prowess, he opened both our Philharmonics season in Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, and our Pops season with the first movement of Gershwin’s Concerto in F and Rhapsody in Blue. The Pops concert was a festive 10th anniversary celebration of the our joint CD which hit #3 on the Billboard charts.
Back by popular demand, Cirque de la Symphonie returned to Rochester and the RPO with a new show featuring some of the world’s greatest circus artists and acrobats. Flying in front of the orchestra as they played, Cirque performers thrilled the audience with amazing stunts and magical illusions all set to live music.
It’s cool to be classical, especially when first-time donors to the End of Season Challenge got a pair of nifty RPO sunglasses! Modeling these shades are Associate Concertmaster Wilfredo Degláns, Concertmaster Juliana Athayde, cellist Lars Kirvan, Principal Viola Melissa Matson, and Assistant Principal Cello Kathy Kemp.

Education at the RPO
ORKIDSTRA
Michael Butterman’s interactive Sunday afternoon concerts—with thematic pre-concert activities—are perfectly geared with the younger set in mind. From fantasy worlds to our own, we began with comic swordplay in Gilbert & Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance and proceeded to Harry Potter’s Wands & Wizards. For the holidays, we took a musical trip on The Polar Express to the land of Frozen. A musical voyage with Symphonic Tales from Around the World led to the celebration of the 100th Anniversary of America’s National Parks—all from the comfort of the Hochstein Performance Hall.
PRIMARY CONCERTS
“Ah, music,” he said, wiping his eyes. “A magic beyond all we do here.”
Wide-eyed first-through-third-graders from the Rochester City Schools and suburbs come to the magnificent Kodak Hall to hear the RPO, often their first introduction to a symphony orchestra. Michael Butterman brought The Science of Sound to teach about instruments, their sounds, and how they work together to produce music. A highlight was the “wacky instruments” demonstration—including a PVC trombone and a garden hose horn to show students how each instrument creates a sound.
–J.K. ROWLING, HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER’S STONE™ The RPO was one of the first orchestras in the country to create a music education program for children. With Michael Butterman as Principal Conductor for Education and Community Engagement (The Louise and Henry Epstein Family Chair), we continue to lead in creating age-appropriate, sequential learning programs fully integrated into school curricula. We partner with regional school districts so that each child in Rochester can be exposed to and enriched by music. There is scarcely a household in Rochester’s nine-county region that has not been touched by the Orchestra’s educational programming.

Our orKIDStra series, including holiday concerts, attracted more than
4,000 audience members.
children heard the RPO live in concert through our Tiny Tots, Primary, and Intermediate Concert series.
Today’s Primary concert was wonderful—learning about sound, music, some “homegrown” instruments, and hearing great music! Our conductor was enthusiastic, and what a great performance with the musicians. My grandson is learning how to play drums, and he was trying to play right along with the musicians on stage. Looking forward to the next concert with my older home-schoolers! Hope you had a great day. We did, with the RPO!” –LARRY MAHONEY, GRANDFATHER OF A HOMES-CHOOLED STUDENT
INTERMEDIATE CONCERTS
Our space-themed, multi-media program really intrigued the fourth-through-sixth-graders. Reaching for the Stars led by Maestro Butterman celebrated the 100th anniversary of President Kennedy’s birth by connecting his moon landing challenge and the role of courage. Music-inspired student works of art and poetry were projected above the orchestra during the concert.
“What a WONDERFUL concert we saw yesterday! The kids loved it. Seeing kids their own age on the stage was super exciting, too! The RPO Education Department always does such a fantastic job. I love that I’ve been coming for 17 years and have never seen the same thing twice!” –KRISTEN FLUET, TEACHER AT OAKFIELD-ALABAMA SCHOOL DISTRICT
TINY TOTS CONCERTS
It’s never too early for children to experience symphonic music. Our 40-minute Tiny Tots concerts brought preschoolers and kindergartners to Franklin High School, Browncroft Community Church, Temple B’rith Kodesh, and ChurchvilleChili High School for The RPO Neighborhood. Students traveled to String Street, Woodwind Way, Brass Blvd, and Percussion Place to learn about the different families and instruments that make up an orchestra.
ROCHESTER PHILHARMONIC YOUTH ORCHESTRA
The pinnacle of the RPYO’s 46th season undoubtedly was its appearance at Carnegie Hall in February! A November “warm-up” for an appreciative Rochester audience also featured double-bassist and Brighton High School Senior Sarah Wager, winner of the Rochester Philharmonic League’s annual Young Artist Auditions. Sitting onstage with the RPO Side-by-Side in March is always a joy— and an education—for these middle- and high-schoolers. RPYO Conductor James Mick concluded the season with Mozart and Mussorgsky at Roberts Wesleyan College. The Orchestra also recognized longtime RPYO Manager Susan Basu on her retirement after 25 years!

Since 1922, the RPO has been committed to providing an enriching experience to the community with live music of the highest artistic quality. “I do not believe that any city in America possesses an orchestra supported on such a city-wide basis, and with a plan of operation which will bring the group so intimately into contact with the city’s inhabitants.” (George Eastman, Civic Orchestra News, 1929)
Highlighted against the setting sun, the RPO performed patriotic favorites at the free, city-sponsored Independence Day Concert at Main Street Bridge, followed by the thrilling downtown fireworks display.
