Songs of
Change, Voice of Hope:
Elizabeth Edwards meanings for her. It is only when letting go that we succeed and follow through with our goals and dreams.
By Carol Harblin
R
ockers In Recovery uncovered yet another diamond in the music and recovery mine – Elizabeth Edwards. Songwriting and singing has been part of her since she was a child. Music has always been a gift to her and she enjoys sharing her craft and its messages that go hand in hand. She is a voice to listen for in upcoming Rockers In Recovery concerts. She also has a new album titled, House of Mirrors, that is predicted to release Spring of 2013. Recovery is the process by which people regain their lives and fulfill their soul’s purpose again; when people no longer feel lost. Ms. Edwards’s songs have a catchy rhythm and melody that can fall into the Country Americana genre. The messages of her songs all give support and inspiration of recovery. Ms. Edwards describes her music as the flip side of the addiction problem, “There are a lot of songs in the industry that talk about the addictive story but few that address the solution and the recovery aspect of addiction.” Ms. Edwards holds 26 inspirational years in recovery and each day she fulfills her dreams and her heart’s desire by writing songs and singing. One song called, “Surrender to Win,” is a message about learning to let go. It is also her breakthrough song that got her recognized within the recovery community. It is a special song that holds several 6
“Giving the gift of inspiration in a song that touches people’s hearts and helps them through the day is an amazing gift indeed,” said Ms. Edwards. Since high school, Ms. Edwards holds a special teacher in her heart for giving confidence to raise her voice. John Larrieu was her music teacher who made a difference in her life and carried his words with her through life like a talisman. Since her recovery, she has opened for many shows, including Dan Fogelberg. It was their connection in song that inspired him to open for him. There are many inspirational people who have supported her life’s process and journey. Comedian Mark Lundholm is best known for his 12-Step comedy. Ms. Edwards has shared the spotlight with Mr. Lundholm many times over the years. She explained their professional relationship as encouraging and supportive. They both understand and recognize each other’s talents and the healing power of music and comedy together. “People need to be encouraged – Recovery can be challenging and with the support of people along with music, life is much more tolerable,” Ms. Edwards talks about recovery and working with RIR, “Rockers In Recovery is gaining momentum and it is thrilling to work along side these accomplished musicians who embrace recovery and we are sharing this opportunity to entertain audiences.”

Just as the RIR All-Star Band have each other as they play from one venue to another, Mr. Lundholm and Ms. Edwards have each other’s positive support as well. It is extremely important to have encouraging and optimistic support in the music and entertainment industry for better growth and survival. We can anticipate seeing more of Ms. Edwards this March for the Rockers In Recovery concert at Revolution Live on March 22, 2013, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and other future events, in addition to her other performances. The
Bruce Rossmeyer Ride for Children —A Journey of Joy
By campboggycreek.org
I
n 1994, when Bruce Rossmeyer decided to open his first Harley-Davidson dealership in Daytona Beach, Florida, no one anticipated that his dream would reach so far and touch so many. Or that just a year later, he would be instrumental in the founding of a second heartfelt endeavor by the name of Camp Boggy Creek. The only camp of its kind in Florida, Camp Boggy Creek was created specifically for children with chronic and life-threatening illnesses who could otherwise not attend camp. As with everything that Bruce did, he was 100% committed to its success and so a fundraising event, the Bruce Rossmeyer Ride for Children, was born. Even before Camp Boggy Creek was open, Bruce rallied riders in Orlando and Daytona. In its inaugural year, 60 participants helped raise nearly $30,000. To date, over 57,000 children, as well as family members, have passed through Camp Boggy Creek’s gates. Waiting for them on the other side has been fellowship, acceptance and joy. “Healing the scars on the inside,” is how one young camper described the experience, and the Ride for Children has been invaluable in making it possible. Over the years, Bruce’s vision has raised more than $4 million and has drawn

supporters like Paul Newman, a camp cofounder, Steven Tyler, Richard Petty, Richie Supa and Edie Falco. Today, the ride continues despite having lost its leader in 2009. Though Bruce’s passing was tragic, his presence continues to be felt at every Ride for Children. Family, friends and riders from all over continue to support the event he loved so dearly. And every year, as its success grows, so does the immeasurable impact. The Ride for Children—now a two-day event—is a celebration with music, food and activities that culminates in a police-escorted ride from Destination Daytona to Camp Boggy Creek where riders are enthusiastically greeted by campers, families, volunteers and staff. For the hundreds who participate, it’s the best ride of their lives. Yet in many ways, the Bruce Rossmeyer Ride for Children has become more Bruce Rossmeyer than a fundraising event for Camp Boggy Creek. It has become a tribute to the kindness and generosity of one man whose heart was as big as his selfless dream—to change the life of a child. For more information on Camp Boggy Creek, please visit the website www.campboggycreek.org. To register for the 19th Annual Bruce Rossmeyer Ride for Children, visit www.RideforChildren.com. «

t’s a long way to New York from South Florida, but for New York style pizza and Italian cuisine, look no further than DelVecchio’s Pizzeria and Italian Restaurant with four convenient locations throughout South Florida. With roots fastened in New York, entrepreneurial owner Jamie McDonnell knows what good, authentic New York Style pizza

and Italian cuisine is and he won’t settle for anything but. Some claim authentic New York Style pizza can only be found with a perfect crust made with perfect, New York City tap water, but whatever the secret is — DelVecchio’s has nailed it. The original DelVecchio’s began in the heart of Weston, Florida, in the Weston Town Center and grew outwards and onwards. The success of the Weston location and the demand for authentic and tasty Italian food has brought DelVecchio’s to Coral Springs on Wiles Road, to Sunrise on 44th Street and now to Davie on University Drive in The Tower Shops. f drugs or alcohol affect your health, quality of life, loved ones and finances, it's time to take control! Change does not have to be radical. It is not necessary to leave home, family and job responsibilities for 30 to 180 days. While inpatient care is advisable for some, in-home treatment is an option for many that are committed to improving life but cannot or will not leave home.
Addiction Reach Home manages the inhome practices and acts as a resource for addicts and their loved ones, clergy, legal and medical professionals, corporations and local inpatient facilities. For more information or to schedule a complementary appointment, call (561) 427-1900 or visit www.addictionreach.com to meet our recovery team.
Although mind, body, spirit are the major components of both inpatient and in-home programs this is where the similarities stop. The in-home program is customized to the needs and desires of the participant. Services include medical and holistic detoxification, addiction and family counseling and spiritual coaching. Optional services can include 24/7 sober coaches, massage, acupuncture, yoga and electronic monitoring for support, validation and accountability. Time schedules are flexible and individualized treatment is the norm as opposed to regimented time frames and group activities. The recovery team is comprised of local credentialed specialists that will be available to the client for as long as they need them. In most inpatient programs, there is a specific length of time and patients are discharged with just an aftercare plan and minimal contact. The inhome program is always being re-evaluated by the clinicians and clients together to make sure treatment is relevant. Statistics show that 75% to 90% of inpatient participants relapse within a year without a well-planned aftercare program. In-home treatment works well in all stages of recovery. It is designed as a continuous stand alone program, a transitional aftercare plan after a facility stay and long term support system as well. The main premise is to make positive life changes from day one in your own environment surrounded by the people in your life and have a consistent recovery team in place at all times. It is easy to start! Take control and explore your options www.rockersinrecovery.org

Celebs To Host
Local Fundraiser for Teens & Adults Fighting Addiction By H-C-S-I.ORG

ddiction is a family affair and the family member you save may be your own.
Motivation comes in many forms. For John Giordano, DHL, it was the pain of watching his son deal with addiction. He over-dosed twice before he was old enough to drive and then tried to hang himself. Watching a son try to end his life is enough to break any father. But instead, John used the pain as incentive to start the not-for-profit Holistic Counseling Services Inc. (HCSI) to help raise funding for insolvent local teens and adults who are fighting addiction while bringing together the most notable authorities in addiction from around the world to help develop cutting edge-evidenced based therapies to improve outcomes. George Hamilton, the honorary gala chair, with John Giordano, DHL, as Master of Ceremonies, welcome Alana Stewart, Richie Supa (Aerosmith), Marvin Jones (New York Jets) and an array of other celebrities who have joined together to help raise awareness and funding for insolvent local teens and adults who are fighting addiction. The gala, including a silent auction, is open to the public and will be held on Saturday, April 20th at the Vizcaya Museum in Miami, Florida. Benefits of the 2nd Annual Gift of Life Gala will go towards treatment for financially strapped teens and adults suffering from addiction through the not-for-profit H-C-S-I.ORG. The campaign goal is to raise over $2 million. Please join us in helping save precious lives.

Holistic Counseling Services Inc. (HCSI) – Where Science Meets Addiction – is a Miami based non-profit created to provide support and funding to financially strapped teens and adults in dire need of addiction treatment while educating the public to addiction prevention. Through your generous donations we’ve been able to exceed our goals. Because of you’re generosity, we’ve recruited the most notable authorities in addiction from around the world to help develop cutting-edge evidenced-based therapies to improve outcomes including our chief science officer, world renowned geneticist Dr. Kenneth Blum, discoverer of the addiction/alcohol gene. Last year we were able to provide ten individuals with the treatment they so desperately needed. As of our last follow-up, all of these people are clean and sober. It’s quite a testament to HCSI’s efforts and the quality treatment they received. Our local outreach has significantly improved by partnering with synergistic groups and organizations, such as Rockers In Recovery, ITC Tennis and the police department. In doing so we’ve were able to reach masses previously unobtainable by us. Through our national and international outreach, we were able to share new cutting edge evidencedbased and scientifically-proven modalities through keynote speakerships at six national addiction treatment conventions last year. In March of 2013 we will be represented at the 1st International Conference on Behavioral Addictions with a keynote speakership. Your generous donations are saving lives and making a difference in the awareness, prevention and treatment of addiction.

Rock, Rhythm, and Recovery with the RIR All-Star Band than ever before as they pioneer the new way of rock and roll as they ditch the old adage of “drugs and rock-n-roll.”
By Carol Harblin
‘B
ack From Hell’ is how many of the victims felt in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy – it is also the name of Rockers In Recovery All-Star Band tour. The RIR All-Star Band, along with special guests, came together on January 25, 2013 to benefit the devastated areas struck by Sandy, for their first of two ‘Back From Hell’ shows. The January concert was called the Hurricane Sandy Relief Concert. Neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow stopped the crowds from jamming with RIR in New York City at The Cutting Room that January night for the Relief Concert. For anyone who is unfamiliar with the RIR concerts, be prepared for a high energy night that does not stop until the last drop. These rockers play with more feisty energy
16
Since the birth of rock and roll, bands have always been associated with drugs and alcohol, but what makes the RIR All-Star Band so unique is that they are coming back with an even greater energy and message: Doing what they love while living sober. The members of the RIR All-Star Band are already mentors and idols to many people in and out of the recovery community. In attendance was New York Senator Joseph Addabbo, Jr, of the 15th district. He was in awe the whole night and was quite pleased of the work of the RIR Band. “I am very grateful that a group like this can help out to this degree with such a wonderful message,” said Addabbo, “There were thousands of people who were hurt from this storm in my district and tonight is

a very special night where they can pay it forward to those people of Broad Channel, Graybeards, and West Hamilton Beach.” The sponsor of the event was American Addiction Centers (AAC). “The message of rocking and promoting recovery while giving back to their community at this level is amazing,” said Michael Blackburn, Senior Vice President of Business Development of AAC, “Helping out people who are in trouble and having fun without drugs is what it is all about.” In much of the music industry, many bands have such negative reputations with drugs and alcohol, but with the pioneering efforts of the RIR Band they are striving to create a new reputation for rock and roll. Music is about reaching from within, not from outside ourselves. The Host and Hostess of the Relief Concert were DJ Ken Dashow (Q104.3) and Lynn Hoffman (A&E Private Sessions). Step-bystep, they entertained between song sets and with the auctions. The stars of the RIR Band are Ricky Byrd (Joan Jett), Liberty Devitto (Billy Joel), Richie Supa (Aerosmith), Kasim Sulton (Blue Oyster Cult), Christine Ohlman (SNL Band) and Mark Stein (Vanilla Fudge). They
have all known each other for decades and it shows when they play on stage as they are all equally in sync. Each band member has a charismatic and genuine energy and they sing with smiles on their faces and from within their souls. Each member brings with them the rocking energy from each of their bands but with a cleaner and sober message for their community. “After all those years when we were playing separately, we’ve always wanted to play together and now we finally are, and we’re having fun playing the music we love,” said Richie Supa.
Ricky Byrd is the musical marvel behind the Hurricane Sandy Relief Concert, and along with the RIR All-Star Band, he also coordinated many other musician friends such as Ian Hunter, Simon Kirke, Michael DesBarres, and LaLa Brooks just to name a few. As people walked into the venue at The Cutting Room there were screens with slides that showed the devastation on a personal and realistic viewpoint. The slide show that accompanied the band’s songs was comprised by Arnie Goodman.

Along with the concert raising money for these survivors, there were CD’s, DVD’s and t-shirts for sale, in addition to a silent auction of autographed guitars (donated by Andrew Kowalczyk) from various rock bands such as AC/DC, Lynyrd Skynryd, Carlos Santana, Chuck Berry, Allman Brothers and Aerosmith. The overall message of each concert is that everyone can have a fun time rock and rolling just by being themselves without drugs and alcohol. Gone are the days of rock and roll being connected with drugs. Rock and roll has a new image. Many people, young and old, are influenced by music groups – namely rock groups. The goal of the RIR Band is to show people that rock and roll is not only alive and well, but alive and sober. Who better to change it than the great Rockers In Recovery All-Star Band? They are indeed the pioneers of rock and roll recovery. Proceeds from the event went toward the Graybeards, Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department and West Hamilton Beach Fire Department. The next stop on the ‘Back from Hell’ tour was at Lyman High School Auditorium of Wallingford, Connecticut, on February 15, 2013, which brought people out of their cabin fever this winter. The RIR All-Star Band played to help benefit a non-profit organization, The Dry Dock. A high school auditorium seems an unlikely place for a rock band to perform but there was purpose – to be part of the positive light in an educational setting with a drug-free mindset. The Dry Dock provides a sober and safe atmosphere to all, with a special focus towards the recovery community. As you walk into the establishment, it offers a safe and positive energy with a café and comfortable furniture. Besides a warm welcome and recovery support, The Dry Dock offers Reiki, yoga, Tai Chi, massage, dances and meditation. 18
The motto of The Dry Dock is, “If you are not careful you might just help someone.” Rich Figlewski, Director of The Dry Dock reflected about the night, “Tonight was incredible because it brought together the recovery community as well as the community of Wallingford to help support a street level organization and I am so grateful to the RIR Band for helping us at this level.” In the lobby, The American Addiction Centers also had a booth set up with brochures offering information and education about addiction. There was also table for the “Coalition for a Better Wallingford” with information on the dangers of prescription and illicit drug use. Selfish Steam opened the night where they heated up the stage, as well as the audience, for the RIR All-Star Band. The energy was so high that, true to form, people were found dancing in front of the stage the whole night. A few of the songs the RIR Band played were “Time is on My Side,” “Pink,” Route 66,” and “Soothe Me.” Little by little as the night wore on, more of the audience was found dancing at the front of the auditorium next to the stage. We all need support in life, especially when life throws curveballs. It is important for communities like Wallingford to have an organization like The Dry Dock that welcomes all people, in a drug-free setting. All of the ticket sales went toward The Dry Dock. Keep your eyes open for the RIR All-Star Band as they continue sweeping across America. What do we have to look forward to between concerts? Ricky Byrd has a CD out called Lifer in addition to Kasim Sulton who will have a CD out this summer. Hang on your hats, because these rock veterans are gaining more momentum and will give you a new found energy too! «

Depression & Anxiety and it can save your life.
By leah gastanaga
D
epression and anxiety can have a chicken and egg cycle, and the same parallel to addiction and depression or addiction and anxiety, or addiction and anxiety and depression. Often having either depression or anxiety or both can go hand in hand. 85% of people with depression are also diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder. More than half of all people entering treatment centers suffer from depression or other mental disorders. In active addiction, many self-medicate to combat depression or anxiety. Many also abuse drugs and/or alcohol instead of taking prescribed antidepressants. In the process, they are altering the brain’s chemistry and depleting it of certain necessary neurotransmitters that create the addiction cycle and make it difficult for the user to quit. In recovery, we learn to deal with life “on life’s terms,” however if one is suffering from depression and/or anxiety, life’s terms can be difficult to understand at best. Often, many think once they get clean or sober, their depression and/or anxiety disorders will resolve themselves, however this is not always the case. Sometimes things get much worse before they get better. It is best to seek professional help like that of a medical doctor, licensed counselor, social worker or therapist to assess you if you are concerned that you or a loved one may be suffering from depression or anxiety. Do not be afraid to seek medical or outside help, as sometimes it is necessary 20
Your sponsor is a key part of your recovery and therefore should be aware of any mental issues such as depression and anxiety. Sharing this with a trusted sponsor is important and will only help you and your recovery. Seek out a positive peer group and surround yourself with positive people who are healthy and of sound mind. In addition, make sure you are attending meetings and that your program is solid. As my sponsor says, “If you want good self esteem, do things that are of great esteem.” Helping others is a great way to be productive and by helping others, you are of course, helping yourself. Relaxation techniques such as breathing therapies and exercise such as yoga are often helpful for many. Working out and making sure your nutrition is balanced and that you have proper rest may sound basic, but are parts of the foundation to a healthy mind and body. Depression and anxiety can be episodic or chronic. Sadly, many undiagnosed people with mental disorders are addicts and many addicts have treatable disorders. The gift of recovery gives us clarity to approach treating either issue and having a happier, productive life. It is important to utilize all resources, including outside help and program support. Remember that you are not alone and how far you have come! «
