Use this sheet to make sure you’re getting the most out of everything you read.

• Read between the lines. Does what characters say give away clues about their thoughts and motives?

• Respond in different ways to what you read, depending on your own experiences

• See images in your head

• Make judgements

• Predict what might happen

• Hear a voice – who is talking to you as you read?

• Draw conclusions

• Discuss

• Sort out ideas

• Preview

• Ask questions about the text to get a first impression, e.g. will it be worth reading?

• Relate to your previous reading experience

• Reread and interpret • Empathise, feel

• Establish a relationship with the narrator • Pass comments and judgements • Relate to your own experience

• Do you know what to expect from your reading? You wouldn’t pick up a recipe book and use it in the same way as you would a novel.

Notice the middle column has the most strategies in it. Why do you think this is? What does it tell us about the activity of reading? Which ones do you know you use often? Highlight them in green. You don’t need to worry about these. Which ones do you use occasionally? Highlight them in yellow. Try to use these more often.

Which ones have you never used? Highlight them in red. You may need to ask your teacher to demonstrate these reading strategies.

Which reading strategies do you think you’ll need to use for this project? How many of these have you highlighted in yellow? Those are the ones to focus on during the task!
